Thanks to the author for a copy of this novel and this is my freely given opinion.

Adrian and Samantha Croft have been forgiven for their previously accused crimes, and given freedom from prosecution so long as Adrian has given up his incriminating files and agrees to stay on the side of the law. They are able to settle into a relationship where Samantha and Adrian have agreed to be honest and devoted to each other and things look are looking more settled. But Adrian still needs to find who was ultimately responsible for his beloved sister's murder, and there are elements from both their past lives that continue to threaten them, some of which are just coming out of the shadows now.

Another compelling an exciting adventure about the Croft family. But they veer just on the right side of respectability as Adrian and Samantha are drawn into helping Kendrick and the police in an investigation into a new series of murders. They have a fascinating connection to a local hospital and people that Crofts have connections with, and their investigation reveals a dark conspiracy of nefarious illicit medical experimentation that disregards the sanctity of life and the premise of do no harm.

I love the development of Samantha and Adrian's relationship as a couple, as well as how they work together as a team now. Kendrick is no longer an enemy, but instead there is a reluctant alliance, with a strong element of contempt on the part of the Crofts. The medical and surgical elements of the murder conspiracy they are all embroiled in is fascinating to me as I do love medical history of any kind. There is continued tension built around the private investigation of the Crofts into his sisters murder, Samantha's split from her trainer, Harlowe, and her adoptive family. He is not part of the central story, but there is some continued story about Adrian's best friend, Edward, the Earl of Marsdale whose heart was broken with the death of Adrian's sister. A few new characters are added as well. One, a new threat to the Crofts; an old enemy from the family's past. Also, a new addition to Kendrick's team, Miss Gabriella Hastings. She and Kendrick butt heads and she is a persistent thorn in his side, but there are signs of reluctant respect and attraction brewing as well.

Thoroughly enjoyed the murder investigation in this story, and how the overarching storylines are further driven and added to in the Croft world. My only worry is that, as more characters are added, and some of the stories splinter off (such as Marsdale and Melody) that it becomes too splintered and cumbersome. However, that has not happened yet and I am eagerly awaiting the next part of their story.

A gripping series involving murder. Adrian and Samantha Croft continue to work with Chief Constable Kendrick and his Runners. Bodies are turning up in the Thames. The connection of a missing maid and footman lead to a doctor performing experiments.
The integrity of Adrian and Samantha are dependent on their cooperation with Kendrick, even though they tend to jump ahead of him. Read the series in order to keep clarity of the characters and their continued connections.
Descriptive violence.

Sophie Barnes’ The House of Croft series continues with its third instalment, A Deceptive Game Ensues.

In the last installment, Samantha manages to rescue him from the gallows and return both of them to their place in society… but things don’t remain quiet in the house of Croft.

People in service are winding up dead, and Adrian Croft is not about to let that go. After ending the last book on good terms with constable Kendrick, Adrian and Samantha team up to help the runners solve this mystery with their special skill set.

All the while, a new nemesis arrives in London, and an old nemesis becomes wise to their trail! There is not a moment of rest at the house of Croft as they search out a medical murderer and deal with their enemies, while trying to stay on the good side of the law!

I am obsessed with this series and I love the serealization of Adrian and Samantha‘s story. Their romance is still going strong in the addition of two potential romances in the wings for other characters kept me on my toes!

I’m excited to see what this duo gets up to next!

As with the other books in the series, this one was hard to put down. The relationship between the Crofts has settled into a passionate partnership, and they become involved in a new investigation. This time, they are in a legal collaboration with Bow Street as they try to figure out the culprit in a string of murders. Old adversaries make their appearances, and we are introduced to new ones. Secondary characters develop interesting romantic relationships as well. When I was done, I wanted to reach for the next in the series, which is in the works.

Adrian Croft escaped the noose in the last book but his desire to find the instigator of his sister’s death is as strong as ever in A Deceptive Game Ensues by Sophie Barnes. But first there are other deaths to look for the villain and provide justice. Adrian and Samantha Croft are happily together and solid in their relationship. When the missing servants become known, they are on the lookout helping Bow Street. New characters, old favorites and a villain I did not expect. As always this is a twisty tale with new dangers arriving before the old ones can be laid to rest.

The compelling read is as great as any of the series. I have kept up with the series but tried to look at it as a new reader to Adrian Crofts’ adventure and escapades. I do think a new reader could follow the plot with no problem but also reading in order would enhance the enjoyment of the entire series. Recommend to all who enjoy a great historical thrilling mystery

This is the first book that I’ve read in this series although I am no stranger to Sophie Barnes writing. I absolutely loved the way that Barnes has combined a big mystery with romances and set it in such an exciting time in history. The plot is convoluted in absolutely the best way and the excitement hardly stops and yet Barnes incorporates enough humor and things like quiet conversations between Adrian and Samantha to leven the excitement to let the reader recover before the next bit. I also like that Adrian still has some of the thinking of the time and tries to protect his wife even though he knows how competent she is. He seems more like a real man of his time than in some historical romances that try to modernize their heroes a bit too much for my liking.
I also greatly enjoyed the sub plot between Chief Constable Kendrick and Gabriella Hastings. The verbal sparring between them was as fun as the building other tension developing. I expect from the hints that they will continue to appear in future volumes.
All in all it was a terrific read although now I need to go back and read the rest!.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – Twists, tunnels, and tension… I couldn’t put it down!
Whew. Just finished A Deceptive Game Ensues and let me tell you, Sophie Barnes did not come to play—unless we’re talking high-stakes, emotionally-loaded, life-or-death kinds of games. Because this was a twisty, thrilling, heart-thudding continuation that left me breathless in the best way.
Picking up after Adrian’s acquittal, I was ready for the Crofts to get a moment of peace. (Ha. Cute idea, right?) But of course, danger is never far behind when you’re Adrian and Samantha. We’re immediately pulled back into a murder mystery laced with revenge, deception, and a secret organization that made me want to yell, “Who do I trust anymore?!”
What I loved was how deeply personal this book felt. Adrian is still carrying the weight of his sister’s death, and even though he technically gave up his power, let’s be honest—he was never going to sit quietly on the sidelines. Watching him wrestle with justice versus vengeance? Oof. Felt that in my soul. And Samantha? That woman continues to be the steady flame in his storm. She’s not just “the wife.” She’s his partner, fully in the trenches with him, and I adore how they lean on each other through every bloody twist in this ride.
Also: subterranean tunnels and a ghost from Adrian’s past? Yeah, that’s the kind of drama I live for. The suspense, the heart-pounding moments, the slow unraveling of lies—it all built up to a crescendo that had me clenching my Kindle like it owed me answers.
If you’re like me and love historicals that aren’t afraid to get dark, gritty, and messy—but still give you that rich emotional payoff? You need this book in your life. Adrian and Samantha are the kind of couple that make you believe love can survive anything, even a city full of secrets.
Sophie Barnes, you genius. I’m ready for whatever game comes next.

Another exciting action mystery packed story that deserves more than a 5 star rating. Has lots of adventure, love, friends, society, intrigue, suspense, twists and turns. The best group of characters included in this story- witty, explosive, unique , all with their own emotional journey, whether bad or good. Samantha and Adrian are now involved with finding the killer of men and women. Adrian has heard about a young maid who has gone missing and then found dead. This murder lads to others, so their investigation takes them to St. George's Hospital. Detective Kendrick is also involved but has a new issue himself- Miss Hastings, daughter to his boss. Together they all work and share what they find to solve these murders. Yet an attack on Samantha by Finn O'Leary brings another problem to their lives. Add in others from their pasts: Harlow, O'Leary, and Wrengate plus what does he have to do with Evie's death. So much happening in this story. Keeps you reading and on the edge of your seat. Can't wait for the next story in this series. Great storytelling by this author. Would recommend to everyone.

Tracking the Bodies . . .

Adrian is saved from death in a previous book with the help of some very important men of the ton. Now Adrian and Samantha Croft are drawn into helping Chief Constable Peter Kendrick and his Runners. They discover several employees working in different households have disappeared without further trace after seeing a physician. And recently bodies have been turning up in the Thames. There seems to be a possibility that a doctor or perhaps even a secret society of physicians may be using the victims for surgical experiments of some kind that have led to their death. But why would healers do such a thing? And how will they track them down?

Sophie Barnes is back with book 5 in the House of Croft series and if you haven't picked this one up yet I highly encourage you to do so if you enjoy the historical mystery genre. These have hooked me from book one and everytime I finish one I can't wait to pick up the next one.

In this installment, we pick up shortly after the last book. Adrian has been acquitted of his crimes and he and Samantha are looking to stay out of the way of Bow Street but Adrian is still looking for revenge for the death of his sister and he'll have to balance that with the safety of his friends and family because now someone is out there killing people and the murders lead straight to Saint George's Hospital.

Samantha has proven her loyalty to Adrian by saving him from the noose but there are still times where I think she feels she still needs to prove something. That said, they have both settled into their married life but getting caught up in this new investigation, Samantha faces some challenges I don't think she was prepared for. Including someone dangerous from Adrian's past who isn't afraid to start a new war in the city.

I thought Barnes did a great job of bringing the relationship forward for these two. Yes, they stumbled a lot in the earlier books but it's good to see them moving past that. That said, I do think Samantha sometimes falls into her old habits and does things on her own and I appreciate that Adrian called her out on it. But that didn't break them down which is the important part. It will be interesting to see how things progress in the next book knowing what is coming both in their married life as well as from Adrian's past.

I thought the mystery part was well done too - I was all over trying to determine who was behind it all and while I eventually figured out part of it, I didn't guess it all so kudos to Barnes on that as well. One of my other favorite aspects of the book was Kendrick and his new assistant, Miss Hastings. I loved the interactions there and hope we get to see more of that in the upcoming books.

As I mentioned, I truly enjoyed this one and felt that the book kept the series moving forward. I'm hoping that at some point we do get to see some progress on Evie's death. I feel like that plot line has been lingering with very little progress but that said, it's not hurting my enjoyment of the books.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

A Deceptive Game Ensues, the fourth book in Sophie Barnes's House of Croft historical mystery series, sees the return of Adrian and Samantha Croft, and Chief Constable Peter Kendrick, who are now working together to unmask who is killing various servants seeking medical care in and around St. George's Hospital. A newcomer to the series is Miss Gabriella Hastings, the daughter of the new Chief Magistrate at Bow Street, who makes her debut as a sparring partner for the good Constable Kendrick, with an enemies-to-lovers vibe, their crackling dialogue being one of the highlights of this installment as they work with the Crofts to investigate the murders. Additionally, there's a sinister, deadly handsome, new criminal in town, Finn O'Leary, who has an axe to grind with Adrian regarding his father's death, as well as old friends/enemies who return like Murry, Dorian Harlowe and "the gentleman" who is ultimately responsible for Adrian's sister's death at the hands of his pawn.

I really enjoyed this book, which was well-written and tighter than some of the previous books in the series. Barnes adeptly keeps the plates spinning in the air for the first two-thirds of the novel, the pace only slowing in the last part of the novel. The reveal of the villains felt a little out of the blue, in my opinion, and I think their character development could have been a bit better so that they were more integral players in the story rather than far-removed secondary characters, especially given their vileness and the role they play in the action near the end. I also missed some of the other secondary characters from previous books, such as Lord Marsdale and Miss Melody Roberts, but perhaps they'll return in a later novel in the series.

All-in-all, a very good addition to the series, although I would recommend reading the books in order as the overarching story continues to build with each subsequent novel that Barnes adds.

This is my first time picking up this series and what a ride it was! The action starts right away and the suspense doesn’t let up for a moment. I had no clue where this story would go and I found the conversation about medical advances to be interesting. It makes me wonder what the medical professionals of today get up to behind closed doors.
As this was my first look into the world Barnes is building with these characters, it took me about half the book to keep all the characters straight. Because GOODNESS there are so many people in this book! I’m grateful for all the explanations and recaps given that summarize events of the previous books. Normally, that annoys me as a reader; however, I imagine that even if I had started from the beginning of the series, I would still be needing these reminders because there are just that many characters coming in and out of the story.
I found the relationship between Adrian and Samantha to be sweet and surprisingly compelling. So often in media, betrayals in relationships are brushed to the side with a “forgive and forget” kind of attitude without any serious work put in to repair the relationship. It was refreshing to see a realistic view of what forgiveness actually looks like most of the time: a daily decision to not hold someone’s past choices against them, even while the hurt is still healing. I look forward to seeing how they continue to heal and move forward together.
Speaking of things I’m looking forward to, I am INVESTED in the detective and the partner he ~totally~ doesn’t want. I hope we get a lot more of them in later books!
Overall, this book was a great time! I recommend starting from the top of the series though, just to keep all the characters straight. I can’t wait to read more!

Acquitted of the crime he was accused of, Adrian Croft begins an investigation that could link a duke to his sister's death. But with a fresh series of murders leading straight to Saint George's Hospital, Adrian is torn between his quest for revenge and the need to catch an active killer. For though he may have sworn to yield his power in order to gain a pardon, all bets are off when villains threaten his city.

I really love Victorian murder mysteries. They can be so dark and crazy. I love it! Adrian and Samantha are so awesome as a married couple. The story gets better and better. I’ll definitely check out more books by this author!

Another engrossing, captivating book in this brilliant series. Once again I found it hard to put down, I love Adrian & Samantha & love how their relationship has evolved & deepened, they also work so well together. The secondary characters are also well portrayed & in this book Miss Gabriella Hastings makes her debut & I loved how she locked horns with Peter Kendrick, I look forward to their relationship deepening. An edge of the seat murder mystery which I highly recommend & now I’m eagerly & impatiently awaiting the next book

Another great installment to Sophie Barnes’ House of Croft Series!. The book begins with Adrian being saved from death by a few influential men of the ton and the Chief Constable, of Bow Street, Peter Kendrick. As he and his wife, Samantha are moving on with their lives, a new string of murders and associated mayhem is taking place in London. As the mysterious deaths and disappearances of servants become known to them, they of course start investigating in attempt to find out if there is a new villain wreaking havoc on the people of London or if it is the same foe Adrian believes is responsible for the death of his beloved sister Evie. While there is a conclusion to their current case at the end,, the reader is left with a tease of the next installment surrounding Adrian, Samantha and the other characters including a new character from Adrian’s past. I am looking forward to reading the next episode in the House of Croft series to see what happens next.

Sophie Barnes has outdone herself with A Deceptive Game Ensues, an exceptional addition to her series that seamlessly blends historical mystery with captivating storytelling. This novel is an absolute page-turner, brimming with a gripping plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The characters are masterfully crafted, each with distinct personalities that add depth and intrigue to the narrative. Barnes' ability to weave complex relationships and suspenseful twists makes this book impossible to put down. The historical setting enriches the story, immersing readers in a vivid world where deception and mystery lurk around every corner.

For fans of historical mysteries and thrilling plots, A Deceptive Game Ensues is a must-read. Its exciting pace and exceptional character development make it a standout novel that I highly recommend. Sophie Barnes continues to prove herself as a master storyteller with this exhilarating series.

Do you love a mystery? With a touch of romance and several story arcs? Then this is the book for you! The story is set in the Regency era and it’s a part of a series, even though you could read it as a stand alone. The other installments will add to your enjoyment, so I would recommend reading those first.
Adrian and Samantha encounter ruthless killers that delude themselves into thinking it’s alright to kill if it means finding a way to anesthetize people. The whodunnit part of the story was surprising, the character building is lovely and the description of what life was like at the time and how people lived is amazing. The only downside of the book was that I didn’t have the time to finish it sooner 😂. Can’t wait for the next installment.

Such a great historical cozy mystery! The Crofts character development has put them on a new level of love and devotion but still little doubts of mistrust. Once again they find themselves unable to resist solving a mystery, a possible serial killer but with all clues pointing to the medical profession. To keep on the right side of the law they work together with Kendrick, the Chief Constable of Bow Street. With so many doctors there are plenty of suspects and a race to prevent another murder.
I do suggest to read the previous books to understand the journey the Crofts have traveled. Looking forward to reading the next installment. Thank to Sophie Barnes and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.

It’s honestly rare to see a series stay consistently good all the way through, but Sophie Barnes is really pulling it off with House of Croft. This fourth book hits the mark again, her writing just pulls you in. I kept wanting to know how it would all end, and everything felt so vivid in my head, like I was watching a movie play out.

I don’t think there’s anything lacking in this one. My only tiny gripe is I thought this would be the last book, I was ready for everything to be wrapped up because I’m not a fan of stories that get dragged on too long. But hey, fingers crossed the next one gives us all the answers to those last lingering mysteries!

Wow! Sophie again puts us on the edge of our seat with another murder mystery and ongoing clashes with a sketchy duke. I have loved this series and now we added a new woman to Bow Street, put a wrench in a possible love story and add medical murders. I would have read this in 2 days but life got in the way. Needless to say it was hard to put down each night! I highly recommend the series and look forward to the next book!

It's hard not to get emotionally involved with the victims when the author takes you into their mindset, their dreams and the choices they make. The Croft couple are formidable but enemies are coming from all sides, from the past and present, ominous. Promising sub-plots with regards to the best friend as well as the chief constable that I would like to read more about as well. Be ready for heart palpitations from different causes! Exceptional read!

Another fabulous book in the House of Croft series. I recommend that this series be read in order, since characters from the previous books do appear.

There are so many interesting characters and plot twists that make for a very interesting and hard to put down read.

A new investigation for the Crofts as they settle into a passionate relationship. They are now in a legal collaboration with Bow Street as they search for the culprit of a new string of murders. This one was hard to put down as secondary characters develop interesting romantic relationships. We learn of old adversaries, as new ones arise. Thank you, Sophie, for the chance to read this new chapter in the House of Croft. I'm looking forward to reading the next chapter in the lives of Samantha and Adrian and all their friends and foes. This is book 4 in Sophie Barnes' dark Victorian crime-romance-drama series, and it's so well done! If you haven't picked up this series, I highly recommend it, but you really have to read the series in order. I expect anyone who tries to start at this book would be pretty lost (like the person who rudely decided to give a poor review WHILE STATING SHE HAD NOT READ THE PREVIOUS BOOKS AND DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE BACK STORIES. Sorry, that is a pet peeve. But I digress.). I love how Ms. Barnes has managed to convert Kendrick, a character I previously considered to be more or less unredeemable, into an interesting, motivated but flawed personality within the series. Then again, she's rather done that all along. Samantha was a trained undercover government operative who realized things were not strictly black and white in her world when she fell in love with her target. Adrian, who hated his roots as the son of a crime lord and had planned to turn his back on that life, chose to embrace it in order to avenge his sister's death. In other words, Ms. Barnes has a gift for creating realistic, multidimensional characters, who add a lot of richness into this series. This entry has a bit less romance than earlier books, but I LOVE what's going on with Kendrick and Miss Hastings! I was hoping for something to happen between Edward and Melody, but Melody's employer (who is also Edward's godmother) had other plans. Though I dearly want to see Edward happy, I'm not convinced Melody is the right person for the job, given all he's been through so far. And the crimes being investigated in this book...Kendrick definitely had a lot of help from Adrian and Samantha, to the point where some evidence obtained would not be admissible in today's courts under the Fruit of the Poisonous Tree ruling. But hey, that didn't exist back then! This was a most interesting crime from an ethical perspective. As for Adrian's sister's murderer, Adrian is perhaps a bit closer in figuring out that mystery, but there is still quite a bit of work to be done - not to mention how things are going to change drastically for Samantha and Adrian quite soon. I could see the author needing to add a sixth book to the series to wrap everything up. We MUST learn who is responsible for the death of Evie, what happens to Edward romantically, if Kendrick can solve crimes and get the girl. Though Ms. Barnes writes wonderful histroms and this series was a new venture for her, I hope she continues to write more in this genre. Of note, I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This was a great read!

The story starts off after the last one ends, with Adrian and Samantha, coming to terms with previous betrayals and misunderstandings, when disturbing information about missing servants comes to their notice. Now that their name is cleared, they have the contacts to investigate, only this time, they include Chief constable Kendrick and attempt to do it legally (well as much as they can). Let the twists and dead ends begin. I enjoyed the new inclusion of Miss Hastings, Kendricks unwanted assistant, and her enthusiasm, this enhanced my view of the Detective and adds an interesting dynamic. As with the others in this series I didn't want to stop reading, The story moves fast right from the outset, and I didnt want it to end.

This is a must read if you like love, mystery, adventure all wrapped up in the victorian era.

Step into the captivating world of the House of Croft series by Sophie Barnes, where intrigue, romance, and suspense collide. In this latest gripping installment, Adrian Croft, recently acquitted of a crime he didn’t commit, strives to rebuild his life with his steadfast wife, Samantha. Their relationship is on much steadier ground now that she has proven her loyalty and deep love for him.

Adrian’s quest for justice is far from over. Determined to uncover the truth behind his sister’s death, he and Samantha initially focus on investigating her mysterious demise. However, their attention shifts when unexplained murders begin to occur, plunging them into a chilling conspiracy as servants start to vanish—one tragically discovered dead under suspicious circumstances. Teaming up with the enigmatic Peter Kendrick, whose love-hate dynamic with Adrian adds layers of tension, they unravel a web of secrets tied to Saint George’s Hospital.

The introduction of Miss Gabriella Hastings, Kendrick’s brilliant and headstrong assistant, injects fresh energy into the narrative. Their undeniable chemistry brims with potential, adding a new level of excitement and anticipation to the unfolding mystery.

As they follow a trail through subterranean tunnels and uncover a secret organization, they face another threat: the looming shadow of Adrian’s past. The Crofts encounter a formidable new adversary threatening to ignite chaos. This saga is packed with pulse-pounding action, heartfelt passion, and razor-sharp characters that will keep you hooked until the last page.

I love all the unexpected twists and turns in this story and am eager to discover the mastermind behind the scenes driving everything that is happening to Adrian. A new, genuinely frightening threat emerges, adding another layer of suspense. The author's exceptional writing style not only brings the story to life with down-to-earth, believable characters but also kept me eagerly turning pages, craving more.

Barnes has left us anticipating a possible new couple, crime-solving adventures, intrigue, secrets, and mystery. I have no idea what we will discover about Evie’s death, and that’s exactly why this author continues to impress me. I thoroughly enjoy this entire series and am waiting impatiently for the next installment.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Deceptive Game Ensues by Sophie Barnes
House of Croft #4

~ Another late night for me ~ Could not put this book down and had to finish before turning the light off after 1am ~ Once again Adrian and Samantha work together assisting the police to find a serial killer ~ Excellent addition to the series ~

What I liked:
* Adrian: strong, resilient, bright, protective, was head of a generational crime syndicate, lives by his personal moral compass, made a deal with the government after being found not guilty of murder, madly in love with his wife Samantha
* Samantha: trained with four other girls as covert assets for the government, threatened for leaving the Nightingale project, lethal, protective, would die for Adrein - husband she loves, prefers to be in the midst of things rather than on the sidelines
* Chief Constable Peter Kendrick who had me feeling negative for a few books but is improving & now attracted to Miss Gabriella Hastings
* Miss Gabriella Hastings: youngest daughter of the chief magistrate, bright, sees connections, not easily intimidated, may be interested in Peter Kendrick in the future
* Supporting characters: Murry – valet & more, Isak – orphan taken in by the Crofts, the four women that were close as siblings and raised with Samantha: Melody, Holly, Tara & Hazel
* The potential romance between Edward & Melody
* The mysteries still in play – wonder who the mastermind who set Adrian’s sister up for death & the truth about Wrengate
* The medical aspects of the story and hearing my father talk about the origin of anesthesia – he was an anesthesiologist as was my brother
* The introduction of Finn O’Leary: he is a negative feeling addition to the series I want to find out about
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* That in spite of the twists and turns, the killers were found and dealt with

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about the callous disregard the killers had for their victims and the warped reasoning they used to do what they did
* That it was not easy for people to make a life together if not from the same social status
* Thinking about Harlowe – the spy-trainer – and how cold he is proving to be

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Definitely

Thank you to the author, Netgalley and Booksprout for the ARC – This is my honest review.
