Beyond The Wall: A Novel of Post - Roman Britain

Rate this book
The legions are but a memory, the glory of Rome only a shadow of crumbling ruins and broken walls.

A darkening tide of barbarism was washing across Britain’s shores and the lights of civilization were slowly flickering out into darkness, only kept burning by the legendary Red Dragons cavalry unit. Led by their Tribune, Arthur, who serves no kingdom but goes where the fight is hardest and most crucial, they wage desperate battles to keep back the tide. The Red Dragons ride the length of Britannia to fight the invading Saxons, Scoti and Picts, wherever they show, from across the seas or down from the Highlands.

At sixteen years old Peredur of Gwynedd has listened all his life to the stories of his father Pelinor fighting with Ambrosius Aurelianus. When word comes that his older brother has been slain in battle with the Saxons, his desire for revenge leads him to follow in his father's footsteps as a warrior, becoming a cavalryman with the Red Dragons. Along the way he may either find himself a warrior and leader worthy of Arthur or be left lying forgotten in the dust of history.

Thank you so much, Jason Kyle, for asking me to be an ARC reader for this story. I say down to start this manuscript and was pleasantly swept away finishing the entire book in under 24 hours!

LOVED THIS VERSION OF ARTHUR'S Roman Britain. Complete with Scots, Picts, Saxons, a Berserker, battles, and good horses!

Peredur's world of Arthur takes place in my favorite Arthurian era, post Roman Britan! I was presently surprised to spend most of the plot in Scotland as we enter the world of Nennius and Arthur's 12 battles.

Peredur is a charicter you fall in love with from page one. The Welsh Percival shines through in a heartfelt way that I wanted to know where his story would go, and I cared for him instantly.

I LOVED Kyle's depiction of warlord Arthur. He is perfect! Lovers of Arthuriana will be delighted at the hidden easter eggs throughout the book as Morgan, Mordred, Owain, Gwain, and others appear woven into this gorgeous historic setting.

The writing in this book also did something not a lot of battle focused plots do. It held my attention! The descriptions of armor, battle plans, and equestrain maneuvers read easy, and i found myself following the descriptions and vividly picturing the battle as if i was in it. This is not something I take lightly as I find all too often too much description can make my eyes glaze over during a battle scene, so thanks Jason for making the battle scenes readble for me.

Furthermore, i loved that the story draws on the Scottish connections with Arthur. Fans of Adam Averys work will enjoy the references in Gemmas charicter ;)

I'm hoping to see more of Arthur, Merlin, Morgana, and others in book 2! I'm most definitely hooked!

Absolutely riveting story of a 16 year old who leaves
home in Wales to join Arthur’s Red Dragons. Peredur,
a young nobleman, wants to avenge his older brother’s death at the hands of the Saxons. He is accepted into the Red Dragons and journeys north into Caledonia, modern Scotland, to stop the raids which have killed many villagers.

I was thrilled to see Arthur as the leader of the skilled and highly trained Red Dragons. His men come from different parts of Britain. Therefore, Arthur never becomes involved in inter-kingdom politics, but in response to any foreign danger to the Britons, Arthur will defend.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing north of the wall through the eyes of Peredur. He learns that serving in the Red Dragons and defending all Britons is more important than avenging himself against the Saxons.

I hope to read further adventures of Peredur and the Red Dragons.

Fantastic book. Everything I want in a low magic fantasy and it is masterfully told.
