“All He has called you to do is serve Him faithfully, not solve sin’s problems.”

I was wrapped up in a wonderful story about the cost of redemption.

Jason ‘Jase’ Hoffman’s growth is being tested and he needs to prove if he’s worthy and willing to fight for what he’s lost. His second chance with his family and with Osceloa requires courage and vulnerability as he fights for the truth. I loved the tension of the emotional risk and Jase’s courage in proving his readiness to earn a second chance.

I appreciated the direction Alena Mentink took in this sequel! Regardless of the truth of the accusation made causing him to flee his home, I thought it important that Jase’s attitude change was shown to be genuine and I liked that Mentink crafted Jase as having the courage to break down the walls and earn his second chance. His character development was amazing!

I was hooked on a great story where the main character chooses grace over anger and patience over control. Family isn’t always easy. Accusations are often based on emotion rather than fact, and none of us is exempt from making poor choices. I loved this prodigal son-inspired story and would heartily recommend this series to anyone.

What a fun read! Those who are well acquainted with my reading tastes know that I’m picky about my romances. So I’m thrilled to have a series I can recommend without reservation.

Alena Mentink has created a lovely blend of small-town coziness, strong faith, and wholesome romance with a good dose of humor and adventure. We all know someone like the characters who live in Osceola, Nebraska, and we all know that family bonds can be the hardest relationships to preserve—or restore.

I admit I occasionally wanted to shake some of the characters, especially when certain ones seemed impossibly oblivious. But as a congenitally oblivious person myself, I also wanted to hug some of those same characters. Of course, every good story needs a villain or two, and we certainly have that—the sort of villains who make us cheer when they get their comeuppance. Poor Jase seems to attract trouble, and the climax is positively unputdownable.

There’s plenty of drama and suspense here, but there’s a lot of comic relief too. Mentink’s witty banter and writing style are great for a smile any time. All the sibling relationships make for some fun scenes, and I loved the combination of Jase and Andy. Miriam’s devotion to her family comes through in so many ways, and it’s sweet to watch.

What is really sweet, though, is the romance. There is nothing unwholesome about this relationship, and it unfolds in such gentle, committed ways. If you tend to shy from romance that takes your mind places you don’t want it to go, this book will be a wonderfully refreshing discovery. And if romance is your standard fare, this book delivers all of the sweetness and none of the spice.

I read A Time of Proving before going back to the first book in the series, A Choice of Love , and I’m happy to report that they can be read independently of each other. But if you’ve already read A Choice of Love, reading A Time of Proving will feel like coming home. Highly recommended for anyone who loves uplifting, faith-filled fiction with God-honoring relationships, strong (and sometimes frustrating, sometimes hilarious) family bonds, and a good fight scene or two.

This is my third book by Alena and honestly, I think it’s my favorite! Miriam and her siblings are split up and sent to live with other family members after their parents passed. While living with her aunt and uncle in Omaha, a man set on marrying Miriam no matter what causes issues when a stranger named Jase comes to her rescue, causing the siblings to be separated sooner than expected.
Miriam ends up in Osceola with her uncle Drew, and shortly after, the handsome stranger winds up in the same town. Jase fled his hometown after a tragic accident and now comes back home to judgment and scrutiny from most, especially his father, who is determined Jase must prove he still has a place in this family.

I loved how dedicated Miriam was to keeping her family together after losing their parents, but there were times I wanted to shake her and ask her what she was thinking when it came to Jase! 😉 Their developing friendship and relationship was so sweet and genuine, and I loved getting reacquainted with the characters from Alena’s previous novels! And I just ADORED little Thaddy!

This is a sweet romance with some tension and mystery surrounding Jase’s past, but it’s also faith-filled and encouraging. Thank you to the author for my copy!

This is the big day--the release of A Time of Proving!

I'm grateful for the opportunity to place another book in readers hands. This book is for you if you love stories with:

. Strong Biblical values

. A gentle romance with no spice

. Friends-to-more trope

. A prodigal son-type storyline (except in this case, the prodigal has to earn forgiveness)

. Family relationships that are considered worth fighting for

. A cozy, small town setting

. A rich villain

. A ready-made-family

If those story elements appeal to you, I encourage you to check out the book!

A Time of Proving by Alena Mentink was such an uplifting read. I absolutely adore close siblings, and this book was chock-full of them. I was so drawn into the story that I wanted more details on how certain things came about or how certain aspects of the story went that wasn't explicitly detailed.
If you love Godly writing, books with a beautifully developed theme, sweet and gentle clean romance, adorable kids, small towns, and adventure, A Time of Proving is for you!

A Time of Proving was both a sweet and enjoyable read with strong underlying themes of family, homecoming, perseverance, hope, and forgiveness being continually developed through the book, with more than a dash of "chuckle-out-loud" humor and mischief added. A Time of Proving will certainly be a favorite re-read of mine.

A Time of Proving is easily read as a standalone novel. I did think, "Hmm, I would probably know so-and-so a bit better if I had read the previous books," but I didn't feel like I was missing anything important to the story. However, after meeting the wonderful community of Osceola, I don't believe you will be able to walk away from them and forget about the rest of the series! I love all the characters, except those I wanted to receive what they had coming (!), and I am already eagerly awaiting the next book to come!

To be honest with y'all, historical romance is not really my genre. But somehow, Alena Mentink can keep me reading, and leave me feeling better than when I started!

For one, this book doesn't JUST focus on the romance. Though there is a bit of that, it is clean and wholesome, and the rest of the story is very family based.

The writing just drew me right in. Seriously, I could imagine myself there, seeing what the characters saw, tasting what the tasted, and so on and so forth. It was all so realistically written and down to earth.

Sometimes with romance, I feel like I missed a big part of the story or something. But this book had none of that. It was well-timed (which I'm picky about) and I loved how while pursuing her, Jase was respectful and knew when she wanted to be left alone.

My favorite characters were Cole and Miriam, but the rest were great too! This is a great read, definitely family friendly and worth the reading time! I highly recommend it to people who not only like romance, but a great family story with lots of mystery and suspense mixed in.

A Time of Proving was a beautifully written novel with a sweet romance, danger, sacrifice, family, and so much more. I’ve not read a book by Mentink before and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this. I’ve now placed her on my auto read list and am excited to go back and read book one in the series. Speaking of which, though this is part of a series, I never felt lost or like I was missing anything by not starting with book one, and feel this makes a wonderful stand alone novel.

Miriam had my heart from the start honestly. I appreciated how she stood her ground with her aunt and uncle. The sacrifice she had to make for her family took so much courage and faith. I admired her for that. I could see myself befriending her if she was new to my town. But honestly, it was Jase who stole the show for me. Right from the beginning when he saved her from her supposed fiancée. His heart for others and doing what is right just really got to me. He had several swoon worthy moments throughout the story, but perhaps the best was his return to his hometown.

Jase had a lot of growth in this story, especially when it came to his homecoming. Everyone thinking he was responsible for something and essentially cutting him off because of it. Can you imagine going back to that? Especially when one of those people is your father? Oh it took so much courage. His relationship with a certain young boy really stole my heart. He was so sweet, so attentive, and just everything I wanted him to be. And the romance? Oh yes…..even with his troublesome brothers trying to have their own shot (which provided some laughs I should say), he was patient yet not willing to stand down. It was just so well written.

I really enjoyed this sweet historical romance. There were some nail biting moments too, which just added to the depth and overall enjoyment of the story. Mentink is an author I look forward to reading more of! Historical romance fans need to add her to their favorite lists as well. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this book by Alena Mentink. I hadn’t read the first one, but I was still able to pick up this one and follow the story easily. The characters are real, interesting, and the story comes alive because of them. I thoroughly enjoyed it and ordered her first one as well!

This was my first book by Alena Mentink and I really enjoyed it. I didn't know what to expect being that this is the second book in the series and I thought I would be lost by not reading the first one but that was not the case. I was able to read this as a stand alone.

I really enjoyed the storyline. We meet Miriam whose parents have died and all she has left is her siblings. They are split up to live with different relatives which is hard for her to come to terms with. She is sent to live with an uncle in Osceola. Oh did I mention she is also getting away from an unwanted suitor. Yes, and while doing so she meets wonderful Jase who also has a past of his own.

I loved Jase. He was such a swoony male character. He comes back home in hopes of reconciling with his parents and the whole town. I won't divulge what happens in his past but I am so very glad of the outcome of it throughout the story. I also enjoyed the romance aspect between him and Miriam. Definitely some swoon worthy, deep sigh moments happening here.

Overall I really enjoyed the storyline. The deep family storyline, the theme of forgiveness and second chances was very well written and done. There was a great faith thread which tied the storyline perfectly together. The romance was sweet and perfect for a teen or young adult as well as adult readers.I for one have added her to my TBR list of of authors and I am looking forward to reading more of her stories especially from this series!

I received a copy of this book for review. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

I couldn't put it down! So much fiction these days seems to involve time-hopping from decade to decade or century to century, with so many point of view characters my head begins to spin, but that's not the case with this sweet story. The pacing and forward-moving storyline with rotating male/female perspectives is the sweet spot as far as I'm concerned.

The romance was sweet and easy to root for, although I do agree with one reviewer who said she wanted to shake the main character a time or two because she was being so oblivious at times!

Faithfulness, forgiveness, and the grace and love of God are evident throughout this story without being pushy or preachy.

The cast of characters with all the different relationship types was beautifully woven together, making the reader care about each and every character. They felt like friends, sisters, and brothers, which makes me excited to jump back in time to read book one of this series to revisit the cozy, homey feel of Osceola!

If you enjoy historical fiction books with faith, mystery, romance and intrigue, this is a book for you. We meet the main characters, Miriam and Jase, in one town and then again as they both find "home". The author cleverly leads us through details that have led them both to where they are now. There's humor for one as they meet new people in town and sadness for the other as they return to an unwelcoming home. We also discover how faith leads both of them, an others, through these different times. The reader will feel compassion, frustration, anger and happiness in the best ways while reading. I can recommend this to young adult readers as well as adults. This is an excellent book with a wonderful storyline from beginning to finish!

*I read an ecopy from the author. This does not affect my review. This review is voluntary.*

Miriam and Jase were wonderful together. At first, Miriam was set on reuniting her family, and struggles arose when that hope looked more and more distant. Jase was more optimistic and was convinced that Miriam could have all she hopes for and more. Yet, thing aren't always so easy.

Their story takes some surprise turns and kept me glued to the pages! I loved seeing how they eventually learn to work together, and trust each other. I adored the characters, and the descriptions and details make the story really pop. Themes of family, loss, and redemption. The story is very well written, and I enjoyed getting to ride along with Jase and Miriam as they seek to prove themselves, and regain what was lost.

Family and coming home were the main themes in this story. Both of the main characters were longing for both, and both had been disappointed in the way life was treating them lately.

Miriam Locklin has one goal in mind, keep all of her siblings together. After the unexpected death of their parents, the Locklin siblings have been parceled out to other family members. Even Miriam and her twin brother are separated as he is out looking for work to try to get everyone back under the same roof. Not only that, but Miriam is also trying to get away from a persistent scoundrel who wants to marry her, who will just not leave her alone. And he is not above using force.

Jase Hoffman has a bad reputation due to unfortunate past circumstances. He is not necessarily all to blame, but the time has come for him to come home. However, his parents are worried about getting hurt again. He needs to prove himself to them.

Jase and Miriam are meant to be together. From the first when he saves her and especially since they keep ending up in the same places. They do fall for one another, but again, Miriam has only one goal in mind. She wants her siblings back together. Jase needs to prove to her that he is good with that.

A Time of Proving is an apt title for this book. I really felt for Jase as he is trying to make something of his life. He is sorry for the past, he loves his family, and he loves Miriam. His proving gestures are so moving that I don't know how Miriam held out for so long.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

If you’re looking for a sweet romance in the vein of Little House on the Prairie, give A Time of Proving a try!

Author Alena Mentink delivers a beautiful tale of family, love, and integrity, with a very swoon-worthy male lead who falls hard and is committed to securing the heart of sweet Miriam.
I loved this book from start to finish—and looking back, I can’t believe Jase and Miriam never kissed until after they were married. It was so sweet, and those physical expressions really weren’t necessary.

Now, just putting it out there… there were quite a few fighting scenes—and when I say fighting scenes, I mean full-out hand-to-hand combat. And a gun at one point. And a knife too. That felt kind of weird to me… and honestly, a bit unnecessary at times. But that’s just my own personal opinion.

I loved watching the relationship between Jase and Miriam blossom as well as the relationship between Jase and Andy. So cute! Miriam, however, felt a bit flat to me as a character. Maybe that’s why it felt more Little House on the Prairie-esque; Miriam didn’t feel like she had much of an arc over the course of the story.

Jase, on the other hand, definitely had a story to tell, and I was here for it. This guy truly had a heart of gold, and I love the way he loved Miriam and her family, and Thaddy, and Andy, and ugh, it was all just so perfect.

All around, this was a lovely book, and I hope you’ll give it a try!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Tense in places but a wonderful story about putting God first while facing your past and looking towards your future. Both of the main characters, Miriam and Jase, struggle with trying to be in complete control of what happens in their lives. Miriam feels like it is her responsibility to get her siblings back together when they are separated by the aunt and uncle who had taken them in when their parents died. Jase struggles with having to prove himself to clear his past. Both find that God is the one who takes care of those things in their lives and they come out with life much better than they could have ever imagined when they place those things in God's hands.

I did not thing I would enjoy this book nearly as much as I did. I felt it would be a nice story and that the spiritual aspect would be a nice part of it. It was much better than that. God permeated the storyline, making this a joy to read. It also served as a reminder to lay my own burdens down at the feet of the Lord, just as the characters had to do in order to truly move forward freely in service to Him.

I definitely recommend this story and will be looking up more from both the author Alena Mentink and the series Home to Osceola.

A Time of Proving is the first book I have read written by Alena Mentink and it was such a delight. It took me a second to change gears, switching genres, but once I did, I got swept into the story.

The character development was great. I loved seeing Miriam work so hard to get her family back, while also grieving losing both parents. Jase was put through the wringer with everything he went through. It was interesting to see the man he was and how he dealt with his past.

The setting was fun. I enjoyed being in the little midwestern town of Osceola. I enjoyed the storyline of redemption and watching love unfold slowly, with some twist in there for good measure.

The romance element was sweet and low spice. Which I always enjoy.

Alena Mentink did a great job intertwining faith throughout the novel.

Alena Mentink’s A Time of Proving, the second book in her Home to Osceola series, is a moving and heartfelt story deeply rooted in family bonds, personal resilience, and unwavering faith. Set in Omaha, Nebraska, during the spring of 1880, Mentink immediately draws readers into the life of seventeen-year-old Miriam Locklin, who, alongside her twin brother Cole, faces immense challenges following the tragic loss of their parents.

The novel’s engaging plot follows Miriam’s struggles against the societal expectations and manipulative schemes of influential families like the Landreths, highlighting the profound dilemma between personal freedom and family obligation. Miriam's determination to keep her younger siblings together and avoid an unwanted marriage to the manipulative Howard Landreth propels the story forward with emotional intensity and narrative depth.

Mentink’s writing style is fluid and approachable, effectively creating a vivid historical setting that captures both the beauty and harsh realities of life in the late 19th century. Her attention to detail, from muddy Omaha streets to the simplicity of life in small-town Osceola, adds authenticity and warmth to the narrative, inviting readers into Miriam’s challenging yet inspiring journey.

Characterization is particularly strong, with Miriam portrayed as a courageous, resourceful, and deeply relatable protagonist. Her internal struggles with faith, self-worth, and responsibility are realistically depicted, drawing readers into her emotional world. Secondary characters, including Miriam’s protective brother Cole and the compassionate and morally upright Jason Hoffman, provide rich layers of interaction and emotional depth that enhance the story’s complexity.

Thematically, A Time of Proving adeptly explores significant issues such as grief, resilience, independence, and faith. The Biblical scripture from 1 Thessalonians 5:21—“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good”—symbolically anchors the narrative, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and moral integrity in the face of adversity.

While the book effectively balances emotional intensity with narrative progression, certain subplots, particularly interactions involving Miriam’s extended family dynamics, could benefit from further elaboration to heighten the emotional resonance and clarify relational tensions.

The ideal audience for A Time of Proving includes fans of historical fiction, particularly those who appreciate character-driven narratives infused with themes of faith, resilience, and family bonds. Readers looking for inspirational stories grounded in historical realism will especially connect with Miriam’s powerful journey.

Overall, A Time of Proving is a compelling and deeply moving story, skillfully told with emotional authenticity and historical charm. Alena Mentink delivers an inspiring and memorable addition to the Home to Osceola series that readers will cherish.

Miriam Locklin wants more than anything to keep her siblings together. But when her aunt and uncle in Omaha can no longer sustain caring for all seven of the Locklin children and divide them up among other relatives, Miriam despairs of them ever being together again. She's sent to live with an unknown uncle in the small town of Osceola. The only bright side she can see is that moving to this out-of-the-way place might keep an unwanted suitor from pursuing her.

Jason (Jase) Hoffman has a good job in Omaha, doing what he loves - building. He encounters Miriam when he rescues her from that unwanted suitor, but trouble finds him soon after. He sees no option other than retreating back home to Osceola. He doesn't expect a warm welcome, and when his father tells him he must prove himself to the family by spending a year in the family farming business rather than pursuing the construction work he enjoys, he isn't sure he'll make the year.

This is the second in Alena Mentink's Home to Osceola series, but I was able to read it as a stand-alone without any problem. I want to read the first, and I'm sure hoping there will be more! Her writing style is gentle and easy to read, but there are enough moments of high tension to keep the pages turning.

Miriam and Jase are both such likable characters! They each had baggage from their past - Miriam, her determination to keep her family together (and her insistence that doing so meant no marriage for her), and Jase, the event from his past for which most of the people of Osceola have judged him harshly (and continue to do so). They both hung onto that baggage so hard that sometimes I wanted to reach into the pages and shake them! And Miriam carries such a burden of responsibility for her younger siblings that it's easy to forget she's just a teenager herself. I had to keep that in mind when she thought Jase was sweet on another young woman in town (and reacted like a teenager would).

Faith is an important part of this story, too. Miriam's uncle in Osceola is a preacher (and quite a delight himself!). Both Miriam and Jase turn to their faith when life presents challenges, and both are willing to admit when they've been trying to handle things on their own without seeking God's plan for a situation.

With its themes of second chances, redemption, forgiveness, and finding courage to face your past, A Time of Proving is a heartwarming read. There's enough tension to keep the pages turning, and plenty of moments that made me laugh right out loud. This is the first of Alena Mentink's books I've read, but it won't be the last!

Disclaimer: I received an advance copy of the book from JustRead Publicity Tours. I was not required to leave a review. All opinions here are mine, and I don't say nice things about books I don't actually like.

This was such an enjoyable read! From the very first page, I could feel my heart being pulled in all the right ways, knowing the emotional journey this story would take me on toward a happy ending. Miriam and her siblings are living with their Aunt and Uncle after losing their parents, but their time there is running out. On top of everything, Howard, a local man, is pressuring Miriam to marry him, and his actions are becoming more forceful. Things only get worse when she has to say goodbye to her siblings (as they are split among family members) , and Howard’s attempts to marry her grow more desperate. But just when things seem their darkest, a kind stranger, Jase, steps in to protect her from Howard's advances. This act of kindness would change both of their lives forever.

When Miriam moves to Osceola to live with her uncle, she never imagined that she’d run into the same stranger, Jase, again. Osceola is new to her, but it’s a place Jase knows well, he ran away from it years ago. He wasn’t accepted back then, but could the town welcome him back now?

As Miriam and Jase spend more time together and grow closer, their friendship turns into something more. But for Miriam, her main goal is to reunite with her siblings, And a relationship doesn't fit in that plan. But Jase believes she can have it all: a future with him and her family together, if she’d just give him a chance. But Jase has his own struggles. He needs to prove himself to his town and family, while also showing Miriam how much he cares. Can he win her heart and convince her they can have a future? Can he clear his name and have the town finally welcome him back? Will Miriam find a way to bring her siblings back and consider a new life in Osceola?

This story was so well written, and I couldn’t help but feel deeply connected to the town and the characters. My heart especially went out to Jase. He’s such a great guy, and I just wanted Miriam to see it! If she didn’t, I might have had to move into the house he built myself, haha, just kidding! But seriously, I’m going to miss this town. I may need to read the book before this one while I wait for Zane’s story to come out next year.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.

I truly enjoy Christian Historical Romance books. A Time of Proving by Alena Mentink is the latest in this genre that I have read. I haven't read the first book in this series, this is Book 2 in the Home to Osceloa Series.

I can honestly say this book really intrigued me from the first few pages. The setting is Osceloa, Nebraska in the 1880's. The 2 main characters are Miriam Locklin and Jase Hoffman. Miriam lost both of her parents and now goes to live with her Uncle in Nebraska. Miriam is trying to get settled into a new town and living with her uncle, whom she just met for the first time in her life. Jase grew up in Osceloa and left a few years ago when the townspeople believed he did something that he felt he was innocent of. He decided to come home and "face the townspeople." He really was excited about being home and he discovers that Miriam is now living in Osceloa. He had met her briefly one other time, and that meeting didn't go over so well. Jase and Miriam become friends and their friendship eventually evolves into something more. I was shocked to read that a relative was trying to sabotage their relationship. I LOVE that Jase decided to stop running from his issues and come back HOME. Miriam was reluctant about relocating to Nebraska and was even more reluctant when Jase came back to town. The growth in Jase and Miriam when they trust in God for the happenings in their lives and relationship was outstanding amazing! The book is one of Second Chances, Trusting in God, Faith, and Family! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. GREAT BOOK!

I love a good historical fiction novel! And of course, this one did not disappoint. A Time of Proving is a wonderful historical fiction novel that you need to read whether as a stand-alone novel or as part of a series. I always advocate for reading as many books as possible so of course I’m going to say read the other ones first and then this one. But if you’re crunched for time, you can read this one and then later go back and read the others.

I’m from a small town, so of course I loved the small town feel of this novel. Plus it takes place in Nebraska. I’m a Missouri gal but live less than 15 minutes from the border to Nebraska, and my husband was born and raised in Nebraska, so I love reading novels set there.

Now, here’s where it gets fun.
This is a romance novel. This is a historical fiction novel. But this also has some mystery and some suspense thrown in for good measure. Oh, and it has some comic relief as well. In total, it is a delightful read that you’re going to love!

Miriam and her siblings were split up after their parents died. There’s a man determined to marry Miriam, and she’s determined not to. Add in Jase, who is a wonderful character, and he jumps in to help her, causing things to be set in motion.

This is one of those novels that once you start reading, you’re not going to want to stop!

Such a surprising book! Never having heard of the author before, and jumping right into the middle of a series, I didn’t know quite what to expect. I was pleasantly rewarded for taking the chance! The unexpectedly fresh character mindset and family dynamics sucked me straight into the story and kept me permanently tethered until the very last page!
The trouble-follows-me-everywhere hero, Jase, was strong and tender, determined and woefully misunderstood. But he let nothing stop him from pressing on when he knew what he wanted and trying to repair tenuous relationships. I LOVED this hero and he will be one I’m bound to remember for years to come!
And Miriam’s determination was equal to his! Even when it hurt, she pushed through, knowing the end result she strove for was her family, together again. I loved the tender heart she possessed, but also the discretion she displayed in judging character and not just taking everything she was told at face-value (though she was human and certainly not immune to being fooled!)
Together, Jase and Miriam along with sooo many FANTASTIC side characters, made A Time of Proving a novel not to be easily forgotten. Author Alena Mentink did an amazing job and I’m looking forward to catching up with the rest of the Home to Osceola series!

There is something sweet and endearing that quickly brought me into this world and tethered me to this family. The Locklins have been through so much already when the story begins that your heart can’t help but go out to the orphaned children and their dire plight.

There is an air of mystery that surrounds not only Jase’s past but also who is trying to sabotage him when he returns home. It is this intriguing premise that made this novel almost impossible for me to put down.

I am surprised with how much I fell in love with this story. While it’s not a unique tale by any means, there is something that glimmers from this narrative that is quite enticing. The author does a masterful job of painting the most beautiful picture with her words.

The ending was seriously one of the sweetest moments. I am so glad that justice was served, the truth prevailed, and love conquered all. This has to be one of my favorite reads this month and I hope I have the opportunity to read more from this author in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed A Time of Proving by author Alena Mentink. And if you are a reader of historical fiction I encourage you to get a copy. Mentink will set you right in Osceola, a small town in the midwest. Her descriptions will draw you in, and her characters will keep you reading.

With lots of drama and suspense, Mentink also puts in moments of humor and warmth. And a few fights. This story really does have everything, including faith in God. Poor Jase can’t seem to win and Miriam can’t seem to let God handle things. They clash, and then they become friends.

The romance was clean and sweet; nothing to make you blush. But it didn’t come easily or quickly and I appreciated that.

I haven’t read book 1, A Choice of Love, but I plan on going back and reading it. Mentink will become a favorite author, I think.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

“It’s all right to grieve..."

“It’s all right to grieve, but don’t block God out of your pain. Use this time to lean closer to Him."

Sweet clean romance with all the laughs, animosity, and tender feelings that take a book from meh to ohh!

Following are some of the memorable quotes from this book:

the fancy toys his father had bestowed on him couldn’t replace real human relationships. Somethings were nothing compared to someone—

“Worrying about what-ifs is no way to live. We’ll simply pray for God’s protection.”

“I’ve seen plenty of men fall in love. They start acting like they’ve lost some of the sense the good Lord created them with.”

“You’ve got some explaining to do. First off, want to tell me your name?” The boy raised his chin. “Don’t have to talk if I don’t want to. You can’t make me.” The boy was right—but his belligerence sure was annoying.

Jase left Osceola when the cloud he was unjustly under became to much to bear, but when, after several years away, he loses his job by saving a woman from unwanted attentions, he decides it's time to return. Unfortunately, he finds the cloud still waiting for him, this time compounded by disappointment and disapproval from his father at the way he'd disappeared. To regain his place in the family, he'll have to prove himself. More than that, the woman he saved providentially ended up in Osceola too, and is working desperately to get her family together again. She's convinced that a man can only be a distraction from that - can he prove her wrong?

This was the first book I've read by the author, and it's got me looking for more. The family relationships were a mix of difficult and delightful, but I loved the way they pushed Jase and Miriam to become better people, whether deliberately or not. Miriam's single-minded conviction that she can have her siblings or a husband but not both felt entirely illogical - but I realise people aren't always (ever?) logical. In terms of the 'proving', I have a suspicion that if put in Jase's position, I'd dig my heels in and leave permanently, so it was good to see a more mature response, however unreasonable the requirement! And the way things came together at the end was beautifully done and very satisfying. All in all, a great read and I look forward to more by the author. Recommended.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

So satisfying and these are absolutely amazing main characters. So far my fav couple but I’m excited for the next one! I got this book to borrow from Alena on Sunday and, having gotten through about 1/3 of the book this morning, read the rest today. This is DEFINITELY a genre I’ll be exploring a bit more in the future! I love how I can see all the progress in story writing and character growth. At the beginning I didn’t think Jase had a lot to grow in but I was corrected and liked him even more for it! So excited for the next one!

So thankful to have stumbled upon this author when I won a giveaway and received her first two books in 2025. I absolutely loved them and this book is no different. The story has a wonderful redemption arc and the characters are very relatable. Not to mention it’s clean historical fiction which I love. 💕 I also love the way the characters from previous books have their mentions here but the story is still centered on the main characters. It feels like it gives the book a “home” but if you haven’t read the others you would still be able to follow along. I can’t wait to start the next one!
