A beautiful second chance love story. College sweethearts finding their way back together after a heartbreak that happened many years ago. The chemistry between Desmond and Nikayla could be felt with every page. Their story was a slow burn but it one that kept you interested throughout.

Beautiful Love Story

This book made me fall in love with the second chance trope. As a lover of romance I absolutely enjoyed the story of Nikayla, a successful business coach and Desmond, divorced single dad & sports podcaster. Despite the challenges of separating their senior year of college, these two find their way back around one another. The unpacking of their stories and the beauty that develops had me smiling for ear to ear as I read each page. This story, though a slow burn was very well written and kept my attention with each and every page. Their love story is one that made my heart smile. I look forward to reading more from this author. Thank you NetGalley and Kafi Wise for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review.

Single dad reunites with his college sweetheart whose heart he broke. I love a second chance trope done well.

This is the perfect read when you need true romance on a soul tie level. I loved the growth of these characters and the support they gave each other (well some were more supportive than others…Elaine I’m looking at you 😂).

This was a slow burn that was worth the wait. I really enjoyed watching their beautiful love story unfold. I’m excited to read the next book.

This was a solid 3.5 star for me! The story was written really good and the author developed the story well, but the traits and characteristics of the characters really got on my nerves a lot of the times, which unfortunately affected the rating. I see where the author was going with the book and it had a lot of potential to be 5 stars, but there were quite a few things in the book I wish went in a different direction. However, I will continue to read more by this author!

A Certified Love is a beautifully written romance that explores the complexities of love, life, and personal growth. A swoon-worthy second chance at love between an ambitious business coach and a cocky sports podcaster who can never get in sync because life gets in the way. An engagement party forces their reunion. Can they make it work this time around? The story is a heartfelt and honest look at what it means to truly love and be loved.

WOW! This book was everything I didn’t know I needed in a second chance romance and more! The author does an incredible job of creating a world that feels real and characters that you can't help but fall in love with. The emotions are raw and honest, and the story is filled with moments of joy, heartbreak, and triumph. The pacing of this slow burn novel was *chef’s kiss*. The tension buildup was palpable and the dual POVs allowed us to truly get to know the main characters. Falling into the “second chance trope” category, this was an excellent submission into the trope. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing two people come back together more mature and ready for love.

This is a must-read for any fan of romance. It's an unforgettable love story that will leave you swooning and kicking your feet in glee while reading.

Thank you NetGalley and Kafi Wise for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Timing is everything and Nikayla and Desmond had to learn this lesson the hard. After a breakup during their senior year of college Nikayla and Desmond went their separate ways because at the time Nikayla wanted more than Desmond was willing to give (something he made no secret of) but nonetheless his inability to give Nikayla what she wanted hurt her deeply nut it was noble for Desmond to realize back then that he wasn't boyfriend material and didn't want a relationship instead of leading Nikayla on with false promises.

This was a story of second chances and forging one's own path. Both Nikayla and Desmond are successful within their own right, but they still had difficult decision to make in regard to family, career, and friendship. Nikayla was smart. loyal, dedicated but always put everybody before herself; she was a typical "Yes Girl", something Desmond always pointed out to her, but it literally took a friend's betrayal for her to see the light. Unfortunately, this was a necessary evil needed for Nikayla to tap into her true potential and Desmond and her friend Jess were her cheerleaders along the way.

Desmond was book boyfriend material through and through. He knew he wasn't ready to be everything to Nikayla in college, but he knew after reconnecting with her at a friend's engagement party that she was his end game. Desmond, a single father number 1 priority was his son and his family; Nikayla was the cherry on top. Desmond also had a very challenging obstacle to overcome with his podcast career that was growing by leaps and bounds but the very thought of uprooting his life again so soon after getting another chance with Nikayla weighed heavy on him and often hung as a dark cloud over their new relationship.

What I enjoyed about this story is the fact that although Desmond was divorced; there was no OW drama in this book and his ex-wife was very supportive of him moving forward with he his 1st love.

This book was a real romance story without the smut/spice. It was more about the reconnecting of loss love that was given a second chance to thrive and the people willing to put in the time to make the relationship work.

A Certified Love
Kafi Wise

Nikayla Anderson is that Girl with a capital G. A woman on a mission. She is a great coach and friend. Work is and has been her primary concern for years. Now she needs something to shake things up. She needs to consider her options outside of the professional sphere.

Desmond Childs is a man with a plan. He is hyper-focused on creating a joyful and stable life for Alex, his son. Maintaining a healthy relationship with his family keeps him anchored. He wants to avoid any distractions while ushering toward his goals.

Nikayla and Desmond were involved in a complex situationship, in college. The desires for one another were there, but the timing wasn’t right. Mistakes were made.

Nikayla and Desmond meeting again, after all this time is kismet. The love they had for each other never died. If anything, life’s trials and tribulations made the decision to be together stronger.

🚨Baby, stop reading now if you don’t wanna see a few slight spoilers!!! 🚨

Desmond is slightly jaded by the expiration of his marriage. Nikayla is struggling with her people pleasing tendencies. They help each other work through their shortcomings.

I won’t spoil anything else, but I have to address the Elaine issue.

Elaine is truly the worst type of heifer lol. The power dynamic was clearly off-balance. When I provided @kafiwise with realtime commentary, I expressed how much I didn’t trust Elaine. Her spirit wasn’t right. 🐍🐍🐍 Her behavior stems from her obsession with being in control, and fear of being replaced/ over-looked. Nikayla’s fear of disappointing Elaine was nauseating. I couldn’t wait for their friendship/ partnership to dissolve.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Jess. She is the friend that we all need. She is one of Nikayla’s biggest cheerleaders. In her time of need she didn’t let Nikayla wallow in defeat.

@kafiwise did a great job of capturing the essence and emotions of each character. There wasn’t a moment that felt inauthentic. I look forward to the next installment to The Certified Series. Elaine definitely needs to do some soul-searching.

Happy Release Day!!

Blurb:
A swoon-worthy second chance at love between an ambitious business coach and a cocky sports podcaster who can never get in sync because life gets in the way. An engagement party forces their reunion. Can they make it work this time around.

"Aren’t most humans capable of change? It’s whether we choose to or not that makes the difference."
This story takes us on a journey into the lives of Nikayla and Desmond (also Marvin). Both ambitious and driven.
They had such a good relationship in college and it eventually grew into where one wanted more, but the other one was not ready or possibly too afraid for what could be... and then their paths parted.

Life gave them another try when they ended up at their mutual friends' party where they are asked to plan an engagement party together.
As the story unfolds we see that both FMC and MMC did some growing up and both of them love and respect what they see in each other:
"he is a gentle giant."
"A lethal combination of smart and sexy with a heart too generous for its own good."

The more they spend time together, the more old feelings surface, but now these feelings comes from more matured people and they're more determined to venture into this BUT it came with all the ups and downs and detours in between.

In this story Kafi illustrates the wrestling within oneself on how much of yourself you're willing to give and do for love and for the one you love. She also shows that second chances are gifts that you have to be ready to receive.

If you love these tropes: second chances, forced proximity, dual POV, college sweethearts and too busy for liver... Go grab this book

As a true romance lover, I really enjoyed this book, especially the second-chance trope, which was executed beautifully. The chemistry between Nikayla and Desmond felt authentic, and the backstory of their college connection added depth to their reunion. Desmond’s character growth stood out the most—his life experiences, from fatherhood to divorce, shaped him into a more mature and grounded man. Seeing how that played into his relationship with Nikayla made their love story even more compelling.

Nikayla, on the other hand, is the epitome of a career-driven woman, often sacrificing personal moments for professional success. While her dedication was admirable, it was clear how much it affected her relationships, making her journey all the more relatable. Desmond, despite his own career ambitions, had a better balance, likely due to his responsibilities as a father.

The story kept me hooked from start to finish. The blend of romance and career struggles felt natural, though Nikayla’s work often overshadowed her personal life. There were also fun and lighthearted moments, particularly during the weekend in Vegas, which added a great contrast to the more emotional beats.

Overall, this book was an emotional, fun second-chance romance that felt real and well deserved. I recommend it to romance readers, especially those who love the second-chance trope, strong career-driven heroines, and stories about finding balance between love and ambition.

Thank you Kafi Wise for an e-ARC of A Certified Love.

This is a true second chance and misguided love story. I loved the way this book unfolded. When your young and trying to keep your head on the goal how much do you really sacrifice and or miss out on. As with all things comes timing. Young love that was denied only to have old friends bring you back around to the matured people you both grew into. Having a strong connection only grows stronger even with the amount of time that has passed. The friend group and the ones that supported them was cute and sweet and knowing that both Nikayla and Desmond catered to those that they really loved and cared for. Loved that they were able to balance each other out and Desmon awakened Nik’s voice she kept under wraps as a people pleaser. Then on the flip side hated how she allowed Elanie to call all the shots and make all decisions. The fact that others could see it and did nothing until Desmond stepped in, I was not sure about the others. That betrayal was so hard to read through because what real friend would do you like that? What gain do you get? Knowing that there is a second book coming with her being the focus sorry not sorry, but I don’t want to read it even if she does redeem herself that snake doesn’t deserve a happily ever after or well wishes. For the ones that stayed true I loved how it all played out and mostly for Desmon and Nik to get it right at the same time the ending was swoon worthy!!!!

A Certified Love by Kafi Wise, whew, this book gave me everything I needed!

This was the embodiment of soft love, and I was here for all of it. If you love a slow burn, then this one is definitely for you. The story of Desmond and Nikayla? Just wow. I loved the way he loved her, period. No gimmicks, no games, just a man knowing exactly what he wants and showing up for his woman in all the right ways.

And listen, we all need a Nikayla in our lives. She was such a genuine friend, a great person all around, and someone who truly deserved the kind of love Desmond had for her. And babyyyy, he was exactly what she needed. No matter what challenges came their way, they always found their way back to each other, and I ate every bit of it up. The love, the unconditional support, the way they just fit, yessssss!

From the first page, I was hooked, waiting to see how it would all unfold, and let me tell you, I was so happy with how it ended. This was my first time reading Kafi Wise, but it definitely won’t be my last. And can we talk about Elaine real quick? Because chiiillllllddd, she had me rolling my eyes and sucking my teeth so hard. Like, really Elaine? That’s all I’m gonna say because girl, bye!

If you’re looking for a love story that feels like a warm hug, A Certified Love is it.

Thank you Kafi Wise, for this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

This was a good debut novel by Kafi Wise. It is a slow burn for sure but the way it is written you want to keep reading to see where things are going to go with Nikayla and Desmond. Nikayla is the one who Desmond let get away in college so 21 years later when they see each other again for the first time at their friends' birthday party, Desmond knows that he cannot let her get away again. What starts out as innocent planning of an engagement party turns into more than either of them saw coming but didn't try to stop.

Watching the interactions between the two of them was nice to see but I did not like Elaine's character in the book at all. From her first introduction I felt like she was too overbearing in her business relationship and friendship with Nikayla and she treated her as if they weren't equals. I also felt like Nikayls valued her opinion too much when it came to her new found relationship with Desmond. I was happy that Nikalya finally found her voice and although it was disappointing to see I was also happy that she saw Elaine for who she truly was. I did like the other side characters in the book and although I would have liked an epilogue I was happy with how it ended.

There is a reason why I love second-chance romances so much. Seeing how characters embrace the newfound opportunity for love makes one feel hopeful. Kafi Wise manages to enhance this by not only giving these characters a second chance at love, but forcing them to take the first chance in their personal lives. As a black woman I felt seeing Nikaylas struggle with boundaries and to step into her power was relatable. Especially when it came to having her feelings validated by Desmond. Speaking of Desmond I am so pleased to see an MMC with his emotional bandwidth. The way he managed to hold space for Nikayla while still communicating his wants was enjoyable. While I am not the biggest fan of wedding subplots, I felt that Jess and Jay's upcoming nuptials acted as the perfect foil to Desmond and Nikayla’s relationship. One of my favorite quotes from him was “She doesn’t have to dance for me unless she wants to, and I like her that way.” Forcing them to acknowledge how much they appreciate each other's growth. Wis not only shows great attention to the characters, but she also shows the same painstaking care to the settings.I could see every detail from the time of day, to the feelings of the room. This was such a comforting read and I cannot wait to see what wise does next.

What a RIDE! Omg. When I say I have been through a whirlwind of emotions!! I laughed, I CUSSED, I was happy, and boy, was I PISSED!! This book was such a good time.

While I enjoyed the romance aspect of this read, I must say that the most fulfilling part was the character development of my good sis, Nikki! I must say that I did catch a few strays in this book, but watching Nikki overcome all that she went through & step into her own REALLY made me happy.

As for Dez, I was locked in from the beginning & was rooting for him so bad!! My guy really did already have the plan, he just needed the platform, and I loved watching him be not only an amazing partner, but also a great father!

I love when books highlight the importance of having solid & loyal friends. Everybody needs a Jess in their lives! The definition of a Ride or Die!

That being said… Ms. Elaine, my mother told me that if I didn’t have nothing nice to say, to not say nothing at all. Alright? Alright.

A special thank you to Kafi Wise for choosing me to be an ARC reader. I’m already excited after reading the Afterword!

This doesn't happen too often been when it does I'm always both taken aback and saddened. I didn't fall in love with this story like I hoped I would.

There's of course things I loved like the portrayal of Black excellence, how amazing of a father Desmond is and how supportive their inner circle was (minus Elaine)

The premise of A Certified Love will definitely pull you in, two bad ass besties being girl bosses, along with with Nikki's assistant Jess (who I love)

Then we have the second chance aspect between Desmond ( a single dad) and Nikki and god bless no added baby momma drama. I did think the initial break up they had in college and why was a bit weak but I accepted it.

Here we are 12 years later...the issue is I never connected with any of the characters and that sucked, it just was ok for me. Nikki eventually found her back bone but her being a push over was hard to read, Gwen was gross, Elaine....sigh her betrayal was honestly not a surprise. I'm glad about the choice Desmond made at the end pertaining to his job and happy they got their HEA.

I’m still thinking about this book. A Certified Love is Black joy, Black love, and Black excellence wrapped up in a cozy, swoon-worthy second chance romance. It gave me everything I didn’t know I needed—especially the soft, affirming reminder that we deserve to be loved fully: emotionally, physically, and without apology.

Nikayla and Desmond are old college flames brought back together to plan an engagement party. Their chemistry? Still there. But what makes this story stand out is how grounded it feels. Their first go-around didn’t work because they were too young. This time, they’re more mature, more sure of themselves, and more intentional. I usually hesitate with second-chance stories, but this one? It just made sense. It felt earned.

What I loved most is that neither of them played games. Their flaws felt real but never toxic. And when Desmond made the decision to leave his dream job and move back to New York for the people he loved—whew. That scene hit me right in the chest. It was simple, clear, and deeply meaningful. Love doesn’t have to be messy to be real.

The book has its spicy moments, but overall it’s cozy and affirming. It left me wanting to fall in love, not just with a person, but with the idea of being loved right. Seeing Black people loving each other, thriving, building businesses, raising children, and finding happiness in everyday moments? That felt like a warm cultural hug.

If you’re someone who enjoys Black romance stories that center joy without struggle, I highly recommend this one. It reminds us that we can have it all—love, career, family—as long as we make room for communication and real connection.

I’m already excited for what Kofi Wise does next. And if Elaine is getting her own story? I’ll be the first in line.

ARC Review

This second chance romance was a cute, fun and fluffy read. But dont get it twisted the drama is there and in full effect. (Insert Elaine. Now listen i know she is getting a book and it will probably change my opinion of her *HOPEFULLY* but right now she can go kick rocks in traffic)
The way Desmond came in and did what needed to be done when it came to Nikayla (aka Nikki) and didnt take his foot off the gas but still allowed her to come into her own by finding her voice and her worth, while navigating his issues and growth in his own life. He is definitely my new book bae.
This book is not only captivating but definitely inspiring, while it follows the story of rekindled love it also shows how when you finally know what you want and give it your all, no matter the obstacles, everything aligns. This is a true telling of what God has for you, no man (or woman) and no thing can take it away.

This is a debut you dont want to miss out on and Ms. Wise
is definitely an author that needs to be on your radar.

A Certified Love is certified emotional rollercoaster full of sweet nostalgia and unresolved tension that is real and raw between Nikayla, a driven business coach, and Desmond Childs, a cocky yet charming sports podcaster. It’s not without drama (wait until you meet Elaine). The chemistry between Nikayla and Desmond is electric, and the emotional depth of their characters pulls you in immediately. The tension they feel, both from their past and their present circumstances, is palpable and makes their journey toward reconnection all the more rewarding. Truly they’ll show you how to balance romantic moments, personal growth, forgiveness, and the tug-of-war between ambition and love (right place wrong time cycle). This story will have you rooting for these two every step of the way.

She said "... so you took the scenic route to me?" OMG Nikki and Desmond had be SWOONING! They are college sweethearts that got off course with each other. Their separate lives progressed in different ways that eventually led them into running into each other at a party. The way they fell right back into stride with each other after so many years was so authentic. Their love was soft and deserving. Desmond's character development from college to the man Nikki runs back into made him more prepared when the second chance presented itself. Desmond is in tune with his wants and is so intentional with Nikki. Nikki is driven and focused but also a people pleaser that puts herself last.
The friend dynamics and work life balances are relatable. They both faced uncertainty in their chosen careers. Desmond has to adjust his life for single parenthood. Luckily, he moves back to a city where his village is ever present. Nikki needed Desmon. He came just in time.

second chance love

Kati has given us a gem. Two lives collide years later after college. They are both at a crossroads with their careers and reunite. Their banter is easy going. There are some miscommunications but resolve into a HEA.

What strikes me is the build up tension and the dual POV insights. There is on page romantic talk but off page spice. I appreciate a novel that can seemlessly build you up and keep your senses rooting for their own happiness. Another is the ex-coparenting. Well done with no harshness. The two are grown individuals wanting the best for Alex. It helps that the FMC is included without hurtful criticism or condemnation of the divorce. That was a stepping stone that brought the MMC back into her life ready to make a commitment.

Thank you Katie Wise and Torchlitink for providing a copy of this book for an honest review. My words are my own.

Nikayla and Desmond were the perfect definition of right person wrong time. These two met in college and had a situationship. Desmond always kept Nikayla at arms length, and at the end of their senior year, they went their separate ways. Nikayla rightfully, so wanted more. However, Desmond wasn’t ready. Years later, they are back in each others lives due to mutual friends getting together. They are both growing in their careers and dealing with jealous friends, divorce, and new career opportunities. The attraction is still there, and as it grows, those outside things try to get in the way. Through individual self-discovery, love, humor, and real family and friends, Desmond and Nikayla were finally able to get their second chance. I loved their connection and the support they had for each other.

Second chance is my favorite genres, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Kafi Wise is an NTM author, and I can’t wait to read more of her work coming.

Beautiful second chance love story!
This book was written perfectly! I knew I was going to be hooked and so engaged from the beginning.

I love the slow burn build up, it was worth it.
I adore the female character Nikayla, she is a boss! I love how she just knows her stuff and how to engage with people!

I love how Nikayla and Desmond have this second chance moment and take full advantage of it. I love how they instantly found that connection again after so many years.

Sometimes time apart is just what is needed for a good relationship.

This was truly a fun and enjoyable book. I really had a good time reading it. I really felt the vibe between the main characters and even the other characters who added depth to the storyline.

This story includes finding out how your true friends are, how to run a successful business and balance your personal life.
You can truly have it all if you want and work hard for it.

Can’t wait for the next book by Kafi. Thank you for the arc!

A Certified Love … that is what they have.
Desmond and Nikayla got a second chance at loving each other and it was so beautifully written.
Nikayla is such a strong woman, handling her business with grace, even when she was hurting! Her drive is inspiring. The way she loves and encourages is powerful! I am obsessed with her!!
Getting a peak into college-Desmond made the single-dad, entrepreneur-Desmond that much more swoon worthy! His love for his son, his love for Dani, and most importantly his love for Nikayla were felt in every single page.

I LOVE Jess and Jay.

“So, you took the scenic route to get to me?”

I will be following along with this series. The redemption coming next… so ready, cause I got beef right now..

Highly recommended reading!

What a well written book! I was so excited to follow the stories of Desmond and Nikayla. This really was a second chance love story. I love it. The happy ending was great too.

Nikayla comes into the scene as a successful business woman with her partner/best friend Elaine. The story shows her internal struggles and self-doubts come to fruition. Elaine really is the villain in this story and it shows. I hope the author redeems her in book 2.

Desmond, formerly known as Marvin, is a single father trying to do his best to be involved with his son. I found their bond and love to be so refreshing. We also get to see a healthy co-parent relationship with his ex-wife Dani. She is supportive and encouraging while Dez tries to figure out his next moves in life. It’s great to see.

This is a great opportunity to read about successful Black love! I definitely recommend it. 5/5

Nikayla and Desmond are SO perfect for each other. They’re a textbook example of meeting the right person at the wrong time and my heart sang when they both arrived at the right one! I will say that I saw a past friendship of mine in the friendship Nikayla has with Elaine and I knew it was trouble from the start. Experiencing Nikayla come into her own, even with her confidence being shaken to her core, was incredibly powerful. Desmond complements her wonderfully and the safe space they give each other to grow, feel pain, and acknowledge their love is absolutely beautiful. I know the next book will be about Elaine, but I don’t know if I have it in me to want to see her get a chance at love. I loved the writing though so I’m sure I’ll get my stubborn self to give in and read it.

I love love😩 I honestly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I’m not always a fan of the second chance romance trope, but the book definitely had me cheesing coming to the end that my jaw started to hurt. Desmond and Nikayla finally getting the chance to be together made my heart swell with happiness. This was definitely a cute and fluffy read that I enjoyed all the way through. I was in Desmond and Nikayla’s business real bad! BTW: I still think Nikayla needed to beat the brakes off of Eilane. I’m just saying🤷🏽‍♀️Book is now available on KU

Overall, the book was good but I didn’t fall in love with this story. I hate reading about women not having a backbone. Elaine gave off secretly in love with and jealous vibes towards Nikki. Like, her reason was not good enough and trash. What she did was also predictable. I knew that recording would come back to bite her.

Dez was a great guy and an amazing father. I’m glad Nikki didn’t let the past hold her back because technically, he was always honest about not wanting a relationship then. Love to see how time healed and matured them but the love never faded.

This was such a beautiful story of second chance love! While it may not have been the right time, it was always the right person for Nikayla and Desmond. It was refreshing to see a couple evolve as individuals and see them fall in love with the versions of each other in the present and not hold on to past heartbreak. Great start to a series and while second chance romance is my favorite trope, I am excited for the possibility of a redeeming love in Book 2!

Whew! This book was EVERYTHING!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The idea of being connected to someone where when you meet the connection only gets stronger. This book had me super swooning. Elaine is definitely on my list. Hopefully she will redeem herself in this next book. I knew she was taping that video for a reason.
