My grumpy new employee acts like this is the last place he wants to be…so why does he watch me as if I’m the most important thing in the world?
It’s finally happening! After years of scrimping and saving, I have finally launched my landscaping business from the back of my garden shop. Oh, don’t get me wrong—I adore making floral arrangements, helping people figure out their soil’s right pH, and sharing a million other gardening tips in my shop…but at long last, I’ve landed the coveted contract to landscape Eastshore Isle’s community property, which means I am going to get paid to get really, really dirty!
…With real dirt. Under my nails, up to my elbows. I dunno what you were thinking.
Except…I’m kinda thinking the same thing when I bring on a new employee to help with this workload. He’s my surly, scowling upstairs neighbor who’s never wanted anything to do with me before, and it would be much easier to handle if he wasn’t also hot enough to make me pant. Who knew I had a thing for snarly orcs?
But it turns out that Memnon is hiding a secret that will make my life so much easier...or ruin it. Because choosing between my dream and a chance to be with him is going to be impossible.
This feel-good, low-angst, high-heat cozy romcom features the following fated Mates, a protector who’s soft only for her, grumpy/sunshine, workplace romance, villains you love to hate, adorable small-town (of course), lots of humor, lots of heat!
Veronika Kane is the monster-loving alter-ego of USA Today Bestselling Author Caroline Lee. One of Caroline's favorite genres to read is SciFi Romance, which led her to monster romance. When she discovered it was possible to set big, buff, delicious monsters in contemporary cozy small towns, she was sold. And that's how she ended up with a new pen name and a new series.
Welcome to the town of Eastshore Isle, the only beach town on the east coast experiencing negative population growth. You know who's going to help save the town? That's right; super-sexy, laugh-out-loud orcs.
My Orc Secret Boss by Veronika Kane Eastshore Isle series #7. Paranormal Orc romance. Diverse. Alternating first person POV. Runs concurrent with prior book My Orc in Uniform. Can be read as a stand-alone but read and enjoy the full series. Maya has won the town’s landscaping job. She’s been scrimping to be able to hire some muscle to help with the heavier aspects of the job. She’s even given up her apartment and is secretly living in the back of her plant store. Just don’t tell the landlord! Memnon is recovering from being shot taking down a criminal and is convinced to help Maya with her new landscaping business. His kteer wasn’t going to let anyone else be her helper. Finding out she is living in the back of her store is the perfect excuse to move her into is own space. A little unavoidable romance gets them both frisky and ready for some outdoor adventures. Be careful of those secrets. No one wants a contract problem.
Steamy, fun, and seducing. Love the “who’s the boss” scenario, her Native American heritage and homage in her planting, and the villain’s resolution. I’ll drop everything to read a Veronika Kane orc book. Don’t miss the fun.
Another cute addition to the Eastshore Isle series!
I love a wounded MMC, especially one who is willing to be vulnerable to his significant other, and we got this with Memnon!
I loved how both of them had such a strong connection to nature. As someone who loves the great outdoors (yes, even with as pale as I am!), I love the pull of nature and I loved seeing that in these MCs.
I loved how the two “villains” or “insufferables” of the town ended up together. It was kinda a fitting ending to just get rid of them and it was hilarious!
I loved all the…adventurous spice in this one. There were a lot of outside moments, as well as a move I will now fantasize about for the rest of my life involving kissing a kitty while standing. Curse the gods who made me 5’8” so I will never experience this!
RONI! You told us this was the last one!! But I love the idea of EVEN MORE EASTSHORE!!!
Thank you to Veronika Kane for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
Landscape architect Maya is in dire financial straits: living illegally in her rented shop to save on rent so she can afford to hire an assistant for hardscape labor as she branches out into making over Eastshore Isle’s public green spaces.. She’s had more than a passing attraction to her gruff upstairs neighbor, a hot orc who survived a h0rrific gsw that ruined the function of his very muscular thigh. When he shows up at her shop one day declaring himself her new laborer, she realizes she’d be foolish to refuse.
Twin orc to an obnoxiously happy newly mated brother, Memnon while happy for his sibling is feeling even more isolated and lonely than usual. It doesn’t help that his gorgeous neighbor has caught him struggling while performing his physical therapy on their common staircase. Being in such close proximity regularly with Maya makes him self conscious and he worries that she won’t be able to handle the scars he sees as grotesque and ugly. However, Maya has no such hangups and is keen on moving things along with Memnon.
Memnon is keeping another far bigger secret from Maya. Will it bite them both? Or can they manage to grab their opportunity for happiness together?
This was another delightfully steamy and sweet novella in the Eastshore Isles universe by the always entertaining Veronika Kane. Maya is resourceful and strong, and Memnon, well… He. Brushes. Her. Hair. Gently, reverently, adoringly. Together they are *chef’s kiss* perfect.
I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy from the author, and I’m happy to share my honest review.
Yep another Monster Romance by Veronika Kane, I really enjoyed this one, just like I enjoyed the other ones in this series. A nice combination of smutty and funny
More like 2.5 but I can't justify rounding the star up instead of down. It was okay. Obviously wasn't my cup of tea with such a little book taking me months to circle back to to finish.
Maya and Memnon were fine. Both love the outdoors and both want to save the same plot of nature. Maya recently opened her own landscaping business/flower/plant shop that just so happens to be under the apartment Memnon is living in, in the building he owns. Maya put everything into her shop, and with that, can't keep living where she was so she sets up a temporary sleep area in the back to hide out in until the money from her first major contact with the town comes through. She needs help though and Memnon...not so graciously step in to lend some muscle, even though he is still recovering from an injury.
Of course it's not a love story without some one track minded wannabe lovers pursuing the two of them. Maya gets Greg?...George?...the annoying rich dude from every other book in this series, and Memnon gets Kaleigh? the fitness junkie who wants to be his 'personal' trainer. The two refuse to take no for an answer. How convenient that you can pick one of them up and reset them to sic another target and they both go for that reset. 🙄
I do appreciate that there's no breaking up over a miscommunication or lack of communication in general. Both of them eventually realize that they want no one else as their partner and spill the beans on the renter/owner, boos/employee conundrums. No yelling, no accusing just kind of an "oh, that makes a lot more sense now" type feeling.
Epilogue jumps you forward a non-disclosed amount of time to 'help' tie up some of the loose threads in the plot.
Not great but not terrible. Wasn't enough to keep me engaged so it took a lot longer then I would like to get back to reading it.
In this delightfully steamy return to Eastshore Isle (just in time for Valentine's Day!), Maya's plans for local beautification after winning the landscaping contract with Eastshore are in danger unless she's able to hire someone to help her do the (literally) dirty work. Memnon, the grumpy male orc who was injured during the holiday parade, finds himself on Maya's payroll after realizing the manual labor could be helpful to his continued recovery and because he has a sense that Maya needs protecting. As they work together and get to know one another, they both struggle to deny the growing attraction. But Maya is concerned about being Memnon's boss and taking advantage of him, and Memnon, well, he hasn't told Maya he's actually the landlord of the building where she rents space for her flower shop...what could possibly happen between two individuals who happen to be Fated Mates and also each other's boss? You'll have to read the novella and find out!
In an unexpected twist to this story, we learn that more orcs are moving to Eastshore *and* some of the orcs are Memnon and Simbel's siblings! Hooray for more Eastshore Isle books!!
Age gap: Maya is probably early to mid-30s, Memnon is 36yo (previous book stated Simbel, his twin's, age)
Tropes: Fated Mates; grumpy/sunshine; protector hero; scarred/wounded hero (injured leg); workplace romance; Native American heroine; small town; low angst
SFCP (safe for childless people); main characters do not get pregnant/have a baby. Accessory characters (from previous books) may be talked about being pregnant/having babies.
I received an ARC version of this book in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
4.5 stars. Memnon, the male orc ex-police officer lead, has isolated himself since he was shot in the line of duty, even from his twin brother. Having bought a building for the residence on top, he hasn’t paid attention to what his business tenant below is doing.
Maya, the female human landscape architect lead, is determined to make her business work, even if she can only afford to live in the back of her shop for three months to afford assistance to complete her first landscaping job right.
Having his friend force him to apply to be Maya’s manual labour, Memnon finds himself spending more and more time with Maya and finding himself drawn to her as his fated mate. Maya is worried about being his boss but Memnon is afraid of how she’ll react when he tells her he owns her business’ building. Can he convince her their relationship is real and to trust him?
This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and a sweet and steamy, grumpy/sunshine, small town, contemporary fantasy romance with a “who’s the boss?” theme. I enjoyed Memnon’s grumpiness that mellowed for Maya. I enjoyed Maya’s determination to succeed at her chosen career. I enjoyed the way they both reflected on and incorporated their cultural history into their lives. I chuckled at the banter and playfulness that overlaid serious thoughts and considerations between both lead and secondary characters. I enjoyed the found family feel. I enjoyed the introduction to more orcs for the author to continue the series.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
I love the grumpy guy that brightens for his girl tropes. Not exactly grumpy and sunshine, more like grumpy and... sort of introvert? She's not big on socializing, much like him, but it's mostly because she puts her entire time, her heart and her soul into her work- her dreams. Still, she definitely gets this grump to smile again, even if it's only for her. The only thing that I was confused about, was that he tells her the truth, albeit in the heat of passion, but she seems to register it, however, after that it's like they both completely forgot he actually admitted it. Oh well, I guess, lol.
On another note. Yes, I already want to next grump to have his HEA (Abydos), but it sounds like he may end up being the LAST one to go. That's just a guess though since the next two aren't him. I mean, it'd be a good way to end the series (even though I'll miss it when it's gone 😭). I do really love this series. It's never very spicy but the romance is fantastic 🥰
This is absolutely my favorite cover of all the books and possibly my favorite set of character personalities.
Mya and Memnon are the perfect example of grumpy x sunshine but what they have in differences, is far outweighed by what they have in common. Mya is Native American and her ancestors love and connection with nature is echoed by the culture of our orcs homeland. It’s so peaceful and calm when they enjoy just sitting outside looking at the water or watching the birds, and they feel purpose and happiness getting their fingers into the dirt. Let’s not forget the fact that their big firework spice scenes are OUTSIDE and one of them is literally out in nature.
Have you ever had an idea for an outdoor mattress ready for a romp on the porch in the sunlight? Me neither, but I’m thinking of it now!
Love these two and their story! Can’t wait to carry on in Eastshore Isle
I'm so happy the author decided to continue the series and has plans for more books! I'm really enjoying each story.
Our main male character (MMC) is a bit of a grump, but he’s a lovable orc at heart. It seems like Sakkara has a real talent for matchmaking, especially since he saw that these two would be such a great fit. After all, he matched the MMC with his mate, even if it took the MMC a little while to realize it!
One of the funniest twists in the story is that the main characters (MCs) are actually each other’s bosses. I thought it was really sweet how the MMC navigated that little “issue
I'm normally not the type of person to leave a long review but I just had to let you know that My Orc (secret) boss is my favorite books of the series. Now don't get me wrong I love all of the other ones as well but this one hit home. You see I'm from the Lumbee Tribe of NC, born as raised in Pembroke NC. I was so shocked when I seen that you put my Tribe in your book. I just want everyone to know how grateful I am to have such an amazing author put my heritage and culture into your book. You are such an amazing author and person and I can wait to see what you have in store for all of the other orc's.
I really love this series! Memnon was a police officer along with his twin brother but he has not been the same since he was shot in the leg. Maya has a garden shop and is expanding to include a landscaping business. Maya didn't know the building she is renting is actually owned by the grump who lives upstairs. Then Maya hires Memnon to assist with her landscaping business. Maya thinks Memnon is gorgeous along with grumpy and Memnon is attracted to Maya. With the two together, the landscaping business is going great and so is a sweet and beautiful relationship in all ways between them. Great bonus to boot!!
I was so excited to get Memnon’s story! He is such a grumpy male but I knew he would be a sweetheart with the right person! And Maya was truly the right person. They were truly mates as the have the same ideas of what peace and comfort are like. I loved how they were both nature oriented and how she was so patient with his grumpiness. She just accepted it. And I adored how devoted he was to her. It was a beautiful story with just the right amount of steam. I love this series and I’m so glad we get more orcs!!!
I did receive an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
I loved Maya and Memnon. The grumpy/sunshine is definitely my favorite, and the secret landlord was a fun addition.
Memnon and his twin brother (previous book) have moved to Eastshore Isle after a call from Sakkura to finally call a place home. He is recovering from an injury he got that caused him to retire from the police force, and he is sulking. Memnon is a kind Orc at heart, and while grumpy, he is driven to help Maya, his new downstairs tenant - and takes a job as a helper for her new landscaping venture. I found it funny that Maya was so concerned about his being her employee, but was also so ready to jump at staying with him at his apartment. Cute story with a new set of characters coming soon.
This is a cute, cozy, small-town romance with a big orc and plenty of fun. It's the 7th book in the series, which can be read out of order, though there are some spoilers. This installment is closely connected to book 6, My Orc in Uniform, as the MMCs in both books are twin brothers, and their stories overlap.
The FMC is a sunshiny, go-getter human who owns a flower shop, while the MMC is her grumpy orc neighbor, who also happens to be her secret landlord. The stakes are low, and the story is sweet and fun.
A short but delightful addition to the series, with an ending that introduces new characters for more fun orc romances.
Spice: 4/5 Plot: 4/5 Writing: 4.5/5 My Enjoyment:4/5
This! This story is the one I have been waiting for! I love a dark and broody character. Make him a sexy orc, freaking perfection! Kane does a great job writing a silent, angry character in a loving small town. She stays true to everyone's personalities and doesn't just change people's characters to happily ever after. Memnon finds his happy ending but is still the quiet recluse we all fall in love with.
Memnon is an Orc who is is very grumpy. He owns the building that Maya has her new landscaping business in. He keeps his ownership secret because he craves the privacy. They are fated mates but neither recognise this fact. They both separately accept that they really like each other but acknowledge that they are too shy to risk taking anything further. This is their lovely dance to realisation. I just love their sensual story.

🔸️The amount of comfort which this story provides is simply insane! ❤️ I loved both characters and how they were connected to Mother Nature. Absolutely enjoyed how both didn't create any unnecessary drama! 🔸️I give extra points for Native American FMC. I think they are still too rare in literature. 🔸️For me, this installment is one of the best in series.
Memnon and Maya just might be my favorite Eastshore couple. Memnon is just so grumpy, and Maya tempers him well. I loved how she balanced him and how he found peace. I loved how she supported her and her dream career. I loved how they found a common love in nature.
I cannot wait for the newest delivery of orcs to Eastshore. I'm thrilled this series is going to keep going!!
I love Veronika Kane's Eastshore Isle series! In this one Memnon is an orc who was shot saving his friends mate and is super grumpy except for around Maya who owns the flower shop below his apartment. This was such a great story and I highly recommend this series as a must read!
I enjoyed this new "Eastshore Isle" book. Just as entertaining as the first 6. A little angst, humor, misunderstandings and romance. Once they realized their feelings for each other and understood the mate bond, they got their HEA. Can't wait for the next books.
This story was fantastic as always!!! I loved our grumpy orc! Such a great series with so much spice and fun!!!! I can't wait for it to continue. Eastshore Isle books are amazing!!! I can't pick my favourite because they are all so special and sexy! And this one... Called me to nature. I just loved it!
This was another quick cute book in the Eastshore Isle series. We saw Memnom get hurt in a previous book, and find that he’s been secluding himself since his injury. He and Maya were a great match with their love of plants and nature.
Cute. Maya and Memnon were so cute. I loved the way he let her in but remained cut off from everyone else. I liked the way she brought him out of his shell. The conflict wasn't a conflict and everything was wrapped up nicely. A few grammatical errors towards the end but nothing to much to through me out of the story.
Perfect Entertainment! Super funny! Super hot and super easy to read! Couldn't ask for anything more. Loved Memnon and Maya Locklear. What a blast their story was. I just finished reading an early copy of this book and am happy to leave my voluntary review.
I'm going crazy for this series! It is so freaking good! The orc's are super lovable even when they are grumpy like our mmc in this one. They all have such hearts of gold! I love that the fmc is Native American. It's not fine nearly enough as it is. I can't wait to read more!
yeah man i just love these books. they’re short and sweet with the perfect amount of world building, character detail, and cozy vibes. i truly love them so much and will always recommend to a new monster fucker reader 🫡 a great introduction to our little world
