One secret gay crush. One journey of self discovery. One epic road trip.
Matt Landers and Jacob Mercer have been ride or die best friends forever. But now, on the cusp of adulthood, it’s all about to change. When summer is over, Jacob is going away to college and Matt will be stuck in Cape Charles, Virginia. Before that happens, they’ve got a plan for one more epic adventure—a road trip all the way across the country to California.
But if they want to borrow Jacob’s dad’s car, there are rules they have to follow.
1. Keep your location tracking on. 2. Check your tire pressure. 3. Be back a week before school starts. 4. Don’t spend your college money. 5. Check in every 24 hours.
There’s nothing in the rules about arguing over road trip playlists, eating too many gas station snacks, or sleeping in the back of the car. There’s also nothing about confessing your secret gay crush, falling for your best friend, and learning how to protect the heart of someone you love.
Summer might be short, but the things Matt and Jacob are going to learn about themselves will last a lifetime.
I absolutely loved this story. Jacob and Matt are ridiculously cute and I couldn't help but love them as they were on this journey of self-discovery and transitioning from being teenage adults to adults in the real world.
Right from the start when they decide to go on this road trip there's this super ominous feeling lurking in the background, like the music from Jaws was just following along for the ride... The hints that were dropped were so good at adding tension to the otherwise pretty low angst story and I really enjoyed the writing style.
I adored how awkward and socially challenged Matt was, and that Jacob was his person no matter what. He could say, do, or be whatever and Jacob would be there for him. Jacob is the classic clueless 'bro' when it comes to Matt's feelings and his own feelings in return, despite the fact he always puts Matt above everyone else in his life 😂, but when these two finally get to that changing point in their relationship it was so incredibly sweet and progressed so naturally - I felt like a proud mother 😂
The emotions in this book really hit me too which I loved, especially because both Jacob and Matt suffer from some hurt feelings which made me feel connected to both of them. Matt's emotional trauma and feelings of abandonment were just heartbreaking though. I cried my eyes out when they finally reached California and the lurking danger presented itself, and then I cried some more when they got back to Virginia and Jacob's mum and dad were so awesome. I honestly wanted to hug Matt so hard for most of this book, even if I would have gotten injured from his porcupine personality. It was like a feeling of pure relief to know that he was getting his well deserved HEA and that epilogue was just the sweetest.
I also loved the cameo from Charlie (Alpha Tau Romeo & Juliet Project) because I had forgotten his cousin was Jacob, so this was a really pleasant surprise when I realised who the characters were!
*****
I received an ARC of this book from Lisa Henry, and this is my honest review
“When you’d been best friends forever, you didn’t have to ask.”
Except maybe 'I like you, do you like me too. Do you think we could be something more than just best friends?' 😢
Such a scary feeling, honestly taking that risk, so what better way to explore that fuzzy feeling than one last hurrah of a Road trip before college for bffs eighteen-year-old Matt and Jacob Mercer, each other's ride or die, like best friends were supposed to be. ❤️🩹
You really can't go wrong with childhood best friends to lovers, especially when one is a closeted gay crushing big time on his straight best friend, who's now leaving him behind. 'I knew his face as well as I knew my own.' 🥺 There's also not much originality to it, either; but that doesn't mean you can't still savor the sweetness that comes when two people realize that could it be, you were right here beside me and I never knew.
Yes, I know those are song lyrics, no need to chew me out for it. 😊
“Not ready to turn our friendship into a crumpled mess of blood and bones and broken wings if it could soar for just a little longer and I could soak up some more of the warmth that was Jacob.” It followed a pretty much predictable plot with all the regular tropes, but Matt and Jacob were a lovable duo that watching them upack the layers of emotions and confessions, while exploring their inexperienced tentative sexy first times - while rather quick on the uptake, still felt realistic. 👍🏻 It was a nice breath of angst-free air with a dual perspective that captured their different personalities well.
The yearning and pining of Matt's sad gay little heart, to the sudden profound, but surprisingly welcoming realization from Jacob's side was portrayed in a wholesome and warm-hearted way that just leaves you with a content feeling. 🥰 Matt's hesitancy of confessing his feelings for Jacob were nicely done, until the point where Jacob's own confusion over his jealous and insecure thoughts of he and Matt spending time apart was the last thing he wanted. 🙂↔️🙂↔️
“It feels a bit weird because it’s new,” I said. “I like it, though.” He squeezed my hand and smiled. “Me too.”
The pit stops they made along the way were also a fun divide between the memorable and not so necessary inclusions, ranging from obligatory salute to the Grand Canyon, while also encountering some rather unpleasant companions that you definitely did not want to cross paths with. 😆 I give points to the authors for at least attempting for the two to heed the sensible advice of how to behave on this impromptu trip, while also talking trash and making dumb jokes, but I guess, that comes with the territory of being young and heading out on the open road. 😎
“Forever, my stupid brain thought. But since that was impossible, then for now at least.”
The addition of the illustrations was a lovely idea; light and quirky, but just the right touch for this light-hearted journey. I want to read about Trucker Cap Danny, but the faceless cover is not working for me! 😖 So, authors, if you could somehow add some facial expressions to them, this reader would be very grateful. 👉🏻👈🏻
There was a glaring misprint though; a typo where Matt's name was mentioned as Mercer. Maybe it was an inside joke, seeing how the story played out, but yeah, that threw me off for a second. 😐 I did get the sense something was up with Matt's father, considering how vague his decision to pack up and head off to California, so that didn't quite catch me by surprise. For it was worth it for Matt to finally find a place for himself that made him feel truly loved and cherished.
And oh, all parents should be as cool and understanding and accepting as the Mercers - truly the best there can be. 🏅🫂
I'm not a huge fan of friends-to-lovers, especially with a gay/bi realization element, but I really enjoyed this sweet romance from Sarah Honey and Lisa Henry. I also love a prickly, "everyone else thinks he is a jerk but I KNOW HIM BETTER" trope (yeah, it just gets me with the grumpy ones). A cute and satisfying read for me.
This was a very sweet best friends to lovers story, where they had practically always been in a relationship, they just didn’t know it. One (Matt) has had an unrequited crush since forever, while the other (Jacob) is oblivious. Even though Jacob had a girlfriend at one point, his priority was always his Matty.
These boys take a road trip from coast to coast, and along the way, they finally voice their feelings for each other. There’s no angst in their relationship, though there is some due to shitty parents.
This was sweet. The road trip setup had so much potential, and I liked the idea of it, but the book was short and kind of underused the whole journey vibe. Felt like they could’ve done way more than just drive.
The bi-awakening stuff was really well done—I loved all the little moments of discovery, trying new things, and figuring stuff out. The friends-to-lovers arc was also super cute. They were already a full package even before the boyfriend part kicked in, so that felt like a natural step.
That said, it was a bit predictable and sometimes juvenile. I know they were 18, but some conversations were so childish. Maybe I’ve just read too many books where teenage boys sound like therapists 😅. I liked them overall and connected at times, but other times I just couldn’t feel them at all. I think that disconnection came from how the big issues were just kind of... resolved without really being addressed. Stuff got wrapped up quickly but without the emotional weight behind it.
Also didn’t love: - Matt not telling Jacob it was a one-way trip. That felt selfish. Jacob was losing a friend too and had to make the drive back alone? - No reason given for Matt to hide being gay. There’s no homophobia in the book, so it felt like a random conflict. - His mom letting him go see his dad without warning him how awful he was?? Why?? Then he comes back and there is not a single conversation? He is living in Jacob's parents house?
Overall: cute, sweet, low-angst, low spice. But it didn’t really leave a mark. Still, the boys were adorable 🥹
This book is all sorts of good. Road trip, coming of age, hurt comfort, childhood best friends, bi awakening, no drama, friends to lovers, first times, sweet and swoony, You before anyone else. Matt and Jacob have been bestest of best friends since they were 6. Matt has been in love with Jacob since he was 12 but Jacob is straight.. he’s straight right? Before college they are going on an epic road trip across the continent and along the way they discover themselves and each other. This story was a low angst, pining, almost unrequited love story and a joy to read, definitely recommend giving it a go.
This book was a breath of fresh air! It so perfectly depicted two young guys on a cross-country road trip that I felt like I was along for the ride. I giggled so often, but there were some poignant moments as well. And the illustrations scattered throughout really brought it to a whole new level! I adored it and it left me with a big smile on my face.
I liked Matt being prickly, although at one point I thought he was being a bit unfair to Jacob's ex-girlfriend. Jacob was probably a bit too perfect for Matt, although I also thought he was being a d*ck to his ex-girlfriend. Jacob's family was awesome though. They just rocked!
The friendship turned into boyfriends was lovely. And I am now VERY CURIOUS with Goose-Run series.
My original review seems to have gotten lost in the ether, so annoying. So I’ll try to recall as much as I can. Jacob and Matt, best friends since elementary school, are now about to head to college. At least Jacob is, Matt is staying at home, he doesn’t have what it takes either brainpower wise or financially. JAcob has a lovely supportive family, Matt doesn’t, and he spends most of his free time at Jacob’s house. HIs father left when he was 8 and he lives with his mother in a trailer home. He hardly sees her as she works long hours and spends her free time with boyfriends.
Matt is dreading the day Jacob leaves for college, he will miss his best friend who he has loved since they were younger. So he suggests they go on a road trip before they say goodbye. Jacob sets everything up, borrows his dad’s car, and with the savings he had from his weekend job, they set off from their home on the east coast for California. Matt chose the destination because he wants to go see his dad who lives there.
It was quite a distance and although they had a good time each day, I felt it wasn’t quite the exciting adventure it could have been. There were a few memorable incidents, especially when they camped out to save money. Plus Matt casually mentions he is gay during a conversation about an incident with a gas station server and is surprised at Jacob’s lack of surprise or shock. That was one turning point in the trip, but when Jacob discovers that Matt never intended returning to Virginia with him, he is heart broken and feels very hurt. There were more discoveries which led to further surprises, one of which was Jacob learning about his true feeling for Matt and how his heart reacted to the knowledge that this trip wasn’t going to be the wonderful experience they had planned.
It was at this point I thought what was going to happen and I was hopeful I would be right. Jacob was my favourite character, though in Matt’s situation I wanted to wrap him up and take care of him like a good mom should. Jacob’s parents were the best, even though they had set up rules for the trip, it was done with the best intentions and love.
This Road Trip was filled with more revelations than the adventure of a lifetime I thought it would be for these two guys, yet I was happy with the outcome and the Epilogue, plus the added downloadable bonus, ‘Hallmark Doesn’t Have a Card for This’.
3.5 because while I loved it, the road trip was kinda boring. My heart hurt for Matt because it is never fun to watch the person you love date other people.
Recently graduated Matt and Jacob take a road trip California to see Matt's estranged dad. Matt was closeted and struggled with hiding his love for Jacob who was oblivious. Things didn't go well with his father but Jacob discovered a lot about himself on. I won't lie I cried. Matt and Jacob finding love together and Jacob's family taking in Matt when he had no where to go was great.
💥 Childhood best friends 💥 Grumpy(Matt)/Sunshine(Jacob) 💥 First times Matt was a virgin and had never been kisses. Jacob was not a virgin and has had a few girlfriends. 💥 They didn't jump right into penetration sex. It wasnt even in the book. They did fool around, frotting and BJs.
Friends to Lovers at its Finest! This book is so stinking cute! I love Jacob and Matt's friendship! There's laugh out loud moments and some really cute, sweet moments and break your heart moments. This is a must read!
Spoilers.... ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
I had a bad feeling about the way things were going to play out with Matt's Dad from the beginning. I was briefly mad at Jacob when he got mad at Matt for planning to stay in California and "leaving him" because didn't he realize that he had already left Matt when he decided to go away for college? Jacob is Matt's only real friend, did he really just expect him to stay at home and wait for him to come home to visit? Also, the way I gasped when I realized who Charlie was!!! Because I'm slow sometimes lol. I know he says he kissed Tanner at the party but it wasn't until MUCH later, when Charlie mentions being in a fraternity at Lassiter that I realized who they were! Loved seeing them again, and another facet to Charlie's life. I loved Matt's prickly, sarcastic black cat energy, I could definitely relate. “It’s California. We should get In-N-Out and then go to the beach.” - As someone who has lived in California all my life & grew up 20 minutes from the beach, I felt this to the very depths of my soul! I also love how the Giant Dipper in San Diego was mentioned. Fun fact, there are 2 Giant Dipper wooden rollercoasters in California. The one in Santa Cruz, at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, opened in 1924, and the one in San Diego at Bellmont Park opened in 1925. I live (and grew up) 45 minutes from Santa Cruz. My heart broke for Matt (even though he would hate that). One last thing, I freaking LOVE Jacob's parents!!!
Matt and Jacob's lives are about to change so they decide to take a cross country trip .Jacob has the most wonderful and supportive family who assist them in achieving this. I received an arc which happily filled the time for one of my flights I loved that Jacob was always there for Matt when no one in his life was .
I’m not really a big reader of books with characters aged in their teens as I find that I can’t connect with them easily. I put my faith in the story telling abilities of these talented authors and they didn’t let me down. I certainly didn’t have a problem connecting with Matt and Jacob as I just really like them. Matt is moody and prickly with a vulnerability that few people see whilst Jacob is a popular all round nice guy who sees the real Matt and not the person presented to the world. The road trip is filled with adventures and misadventures, good times and some moments that gave me all the feels. I smiled at the banter between Matt and Jacob and laughed out loud at some of the road trip antics. My heart felt heavy at times but I was all warm and sappy with a big happy smile at the end. It was an absolute joy going on this road trip with Matt and Jacob and watching their platonic friendship morph into more. There’s a bit of spice, some external angst and a very “happy boyfriend’s in love” ending.
I was entirely bored the whole time I was reading this. It's a road trip romance about 2 best friends travelling cross-country, one of them closeted and pining, the other oblivious. Athough it's not badly written, it was so predictable and lukewarm. I found the character to be pretty uninspired and the gay-for-you moment unrealistic and emotionally hollow. I'm glad it was short, because I don't think I could have handled much more of it.
I received an arc of this book and I am leaving an honest review.
It was a very cute story between Matt and Jacob, mostly low angst, but touched upon some childhood neglect and abandonment. My only wish was that there was more context surrounding Matt’s parents as it felt like something was missing.
The relationship between the two men flowed very naturally, I liked how they were both so inexperienced, even Jacob who had been with women before and how they navigated their new relationship together. It was great to see Charlie from the Alpha-Tau series and the conversation between Jacob and Charlie was a nice touch.
Overall I enjoyed their story, and I look forward to upcoming books from these authors.
As soon as I read the blurb for this book I knew I had to read this myself, it sounded way too good to miss out on. I am so happy and thrilled that I not only was able to read it, but I'm so happy that it is such a good book.
Matt and Jacob have been best friends for years, they've grown up together and are there for each other always. But with the end of summer looming and there being a deadline on when Jacob goes off to college, their friendship feels like it's being threatened. To try to celebrate their last few weeks together, Matt suggests a road trip, one last hurrah before everything changes.... What happens on there road trip was something neither of these men saw coming.
This story was honestly so cute! I would go as far as saying this fits the role of being a rom-coms, there is so much humor within this story and the characters have such playful and comedic dialogue with each other. They also have serious conversations as well, but most of the time they are bantering with each other which I enjoyed reading. I absolutely adored how close these two men are, but how they still are learning new things about one another. Jacob learned that Matt was keeping things from him and while he was hurt by the secrecy, he was still supportive and was kind and caring towards his best friend. And Matt learned that there are people out there who want him around and who cares about him and who loves him.
I really liked the journey both of these men go on. I'm not just referring to the actual road trip journey itself, but the journey both of these men go on within their friendship, and how their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship. That journey was written in such a beautiful way and it felt realistic. Everything had a really nice flow to it, all of the scenes just made sense and fit. The side characters belonged where they were, the relationship between Jacob and Matt was extraordinary, and I LOVE how steamy scenes weren't the focus. Was there a steamy scene or two? Yes. But was there a lot of steamy scenes? No.. which is what I enjoyed. These two men have such a strong relationship and bond that they have plenty of intimacy without it being s++xual intimacy, and I think that's really beautiful.
Overall a truly fantastic story that I definitely recommend reading!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
In this book, we get the story of best friends turned boyfriends Matt Landers and Jacob Mercer. Matt and Jacob have been friends since childhood. They have just graduated high school. Jacob is off to Old Dominion University and Matt is stuck in their hometown of Cape Charles, Virginia living with his mom and her newest boyfriend and attending the local community college. They plan a road trip to California to visit Matt’s father whom he hasn’t seen since he was a child. Matt never contacts his father to let him know he’s going to visit.
Matt plans on living with his father since he doesn’t get along with his mom’s new boyfriend. As a kid, he kept asking his father when he could come and live with him, and his dad said when you grow up. He’s 18 now and he expects a warm welcome.
Jacob doesn’t know what Matt is planning on doing. He thinks they’re just going to visit and then go back to Virginia in time for them both to start school in the fall. Matt eventually does tell Jacob his plans, and it really makes Jacob realize how much he loves his friend and not just as a friend. He doesn’t want to be so far away from him, but he accepts his decision, and they decide to try the long-distance relationship thing.
I don’t want to spoil the plot, but I think most can probably figure out what happened with Matt’s father since we are guaranteed a happy ending. I think the father subplot really could have been left out since it really doesn’t add that much to the story.
I think this is one of the better coming of age stories I’ve read in a long time. Jacob and Matt are interesting characters, but I would have liked to have seen more development since the book is solely focused on them with only minor supporting characters. I do recommend the book since it is a really sweet story. There are a few spicy moments, but they’re pretty toned down.
Great Authors did not get in the way of a Great Story.
Lisa Henry and Sarah Honey have done some great work. The Alpha Tau universe was one of my first experiences with this duo. The plots are so good that the required love story angst does not seem artificially created and is more endemic to the story than not. The perspectives on unspoken feelings and any backstories that may have made them are excellent.
In this take on the classic Road Trip, it is apparent that Jacob Mercer is Matt Landers' certified best, and perhaps, only friend. A broken family, his mother's new boyfriend, and a lack of what happens next is Matt's fate. His stated goal is to get to California and live with his dad.
Jacob's quick agreement to his dad's road trip rules and the plan to take Matt to California indicates that he will miss his friend when he goes off to college, especially now that both have graduated from high school. The 'last summer' ride across the U.S. only deepens Matt's love for his best friend and heightens Jacob's awareness of their shared bond.
It is a beautifully woven story filled with questions about where to sleep, encounters with skunks, tents, and, of course, moments of private reflection. Matt's secret ambition has been to live with his dad, who left the family when he was eight. Matt has been struggling, resenting his mother's new boyfriend, and not planning for a future apart from a promise made by his dad that he could stay with him.
Each night spent together makes Jacob more aware of his feelings for his friend whose personality projected to others labels him a butt of jokes and slurs. Jacob recognizes the differences from when he was with his girlfriend, with whom he broke up before the trip.
The story has a happy ending, as many do. However, it brings a much deeper awareness to Jacob's family and an acceptance that keeps these two together. The endnote hints at another perspective of Jacob and Matt, and I'll be looking forward to that.
I received an Advance Read Copy of this book with the expectation that I would write a review. This review is my own work and was not influenced by the authors or others.
What to Expect: Childhood Best Friends to Lovers✔️ Hurt/Comfort✔️ Road Trip Shenanigans✔️
Listen.. I became OBSESSED with Lisa Henry & Sarah Honey after the Alpha Tau Series (which by the way go give it a read if you haven’t yet!) Anyway! We met Jacob’s cousin Charlie in the last Alpha Tau series & I IMMEDIATELY wanted more of him & they did NOT disappoint
Road trip had their signature sarcastic sense of humor that I fxckn fell in LOVE with. It was witty, low angst and let’s just be sooooo fxckn REAl.. that pining ALWAYS HITS 😩.
I loved seeing how pure Jacob & Matt’s friendship was that when it moved to MORE, it seemed natural & seamless. 🥹 The way Jacob was protective over his Matty. Matty’s sketches?!! Stawwwp!! 😩🥰 also I ABSOLUTELY loved seeing the artwork!
Matt finding his found family in the Mercer’s?! Stawwwwp!! I loved themmmm. Also Luke?! I can’t with him 💀 & Charlie saying that all men are bastards & him being a member of one “The gayest fraternities in Lassiter”. Gahhh he kills me every time!
It’s these LITTLE details that make me fall for Lisa’s & Sarah’s books every time! The found family, the witty humor, and the SWEET & SWOONY.
thank you Lisa Henry & Sarah Honey and team for the ARC. & as always all thoughts and opinions are my own
This is a sweet coming-of-age story of a pair of best friends taking a cross-country road trip that changes their lives. Jacob and Matt just graduated high school and convinced their parents to let them go in a road trip across the country before Jacob leaves for college. What Jacob doesn't know is that Matt has a couple big secrets up his sleeve.
I really enjoyed both Jacob and Matt, and how real and fun their friendship was. Jacob is a sweetheart and Matt is a little porcupine. I wanted to give Matt a big hug, but luckily Jacob took care of that for me. The mood is generally pretty light, while still addressing serious topics (like Matt's dad abandoning his family). This book is perfect if you're looking for a good time that's low-stress.
(I received a free advanced review copy from the authors.)
This is a best friends to more romance, featuring Matt and Jacob, and is a standalone book.
I absolutely loved this, it was a seriously funny and sweet coming of age story. Matt and Jacob have a special connection and when Jacob realises his feelings for his bestie are more than friendship, their relationship development is all kinds of swoony. There are so many hilarious moments along the way and so many tender moments. The family drama made me cry a little.
Things to expect in this book are: Standalone MM romance Best friends to more Grumpy x Sunshine Road trip across USA Playlists Secret crush All the pining Camping Virgin MC Coming out Bi awakening First times Little bit of spice Family drama Hurt / Comfort HEA
Generally speaking, I am not into road trip stories, but with these two authors, I had to give it a try. And oh boy, am I glad that I gave it a try. These two are just so right for one another. Jacob & Matt have belonged together forever yet didn't hit that right time until Jacob was able to see how Matt really felt and magic they were made to be together and just fit better as a couple. with some best friends to lovers, you don't see it being better as more. However, with these two, it made sense to take that next step. a fun read with a great cameo from the Alpha Tau series that, like many, made me fall for these writers.
I considered dnf this several times but it was so short...anyway, it wasn't the no-angst cuteness I was expecting.
These boys were BFF since like age 6 but Matt never told Jake he was gay. I always have trouble understanding that.
Matt was sort of a prickly pear & I don't like those. He didn't tell his mom he was leaving her - just left a note. Didn't tell Jake he was essentially just a ride all the way to CA & would be driving back by himself. Not cool.
Their road trip was boring.
How did they get to be boyfriends SO FAST? Whiplash. oof.
Okay, I'm bad at writing reviews, but wanted to say that I loved this book. It was very well-written and endearing and is a strong contender for my favorite book of the year. I went through all the emotions reading this and I can't wait to read more by these authors.
