Mafia Break-in

Rate this book
This summer was supposed to be the start of a new chapter for me. But instead I'm left devastated, broke, and alone. When my friend suggests some company to help me through the night, I turn the idea down. I just want to wallow in my misery.

But then I'm awakened by them.

Three masked men offer me the sweetest bliss while reminding me who I am. I'm obsessed with these strangers; the crazy one with green eyes who can’t keep his mouth off me, the leader who demands submission, and the wild card who uses me as he pleases.

They take whatever they desire and tonight they will have me.

One night of letting it all go won't cost me anything. Right?

I like him, like him too / He my man, he my boo / He my type, he so cute / I want him, and I want him too (I Like Him – Princess Nokia).

Now wait just a minute… this was hot. And trust me, getting me to submit myself to the mortifying prospect of being known and admit that I have a pulse is like pulling teeth, especially when the subject of of my praise is a book called Mafia Break-in, so I thought I would just get that out there before I start talking about this odd gem of a book. So yeah, I’m going to try keeping this review (or whatever this counts as) pretty short because I think it’d be pretty silly of me to write a whole ass dissertation on a book that clearly takes inspiration from a popular genre of porn. Famous last words, I know, but I guess the fact that this book set out to do one thing and then leave like a thief in the night is exactly why Mafia Break-in worked for me whereas other books that like to mix the super sweet and the super kinky books don't. This is a book written by an author who knows what it is and who it's for without ruining everything by trying to impart some kind of moral lesson or wax poetic about true love or whatever. Skyler Snow understood the assignment! Really though, what works here specifically was that it didn’t even try to go for that typical “overprotective”, “they’re mine to own” kind of toxic dynamic that you always find in mafia romances, and instead emphasized the twisted aspect while keeping things on the level without devolving into the Chained in Darkness side of chaotic messiness. Not to swing at a hornet's nest here, but I’ve never really seen mafia romances as anything more than the clichéd literary remnants straight out of the “wattpad” “sasunaru fanfic” era of self-indulgent practices, just with an added attempt at a vintage styling due to the “mafia” aspect. Maybe this is just me, but I’ve never been particularly enamored with the idea of a controlling romantic lead that’s also... in the mafia? I mean, I've never really liked the possessive thing anyway, and I know the "mafia" part is what seals the deal for a lot of folks, but I guess the idea of featuring a story where these kinds of characters achieve happiness seems so antithetical to the confines of the genre that it's particularly hard to wrap my head around. Especially considering the fact that literally every mafia story out there is a deconstruction of the “romance” surrounding organized crime and the “code” that gangs adhere to. Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Casino, and even The Godfather (the most romantic of all due to Al Pacino's beautiful eyes), they’re all captivating examinations on morality, sure, but they also underline just how much a of a piece of shit these guys are at every given opportunity! Maybe that's the reason why it works for so many people? I guess I get it, it would seem like a surefire hit to take the classic Bishōnen edgy romance and centering it around a mafia story, but it still doesn't feel right to me.

Oof, so much for keeping this short and sweet! My bad for the long-winded explanation, but the "too long; didn't read" here is that the main reason why Mafia Break-in worked for me where most everything else fell short is because it’s purely about sex. Hm… when put that way, I do come across as a bit shallow, huh? But that’s just the thing, maybe I am! I can’t even count the number of times when I’ve read one of these “shirtless-man-on-the-cover” books expecting something nasty only for them to turn it around halfway through by trying to appeal to some kind of lofty het-coded happily-ever-after where everyone ends up married with children. Which is especially egregious when nothing in the actual text was there to support such a sappy ending. Don't get me wrong, I love a sweet conclusion, but you have to earn it! Do you think Inside Llewyn Davis would have still been a masterpiece if Oscar Isaac succeeded in making it big by the end? Absolutely not! And what's up with all these gay couples in fiction having kids? Like, I know that's the end goal for a lot of people, but surely not every couple, right? Especially not those who are featured in books with a shirtless man on the cover! Are you telling me these two men would decide to have children during the epilogue!? Damn, we must have read a different book then. It reminds me of those cozy video games like Stardew Valley where players will just have kids simply because it's another item on the checklist. It vexes me how so many of these kinds of books are so heavily focused on "holding space" that they forget that sometimes it's okay for a story to be centered on a character that isn't looking for a long-term relationship. Some books can just be a song by The Weeknd, it's okay! Anyway, the story here is that there really isn’t much of one, and you know what? There shouldn't be. Mafia Break-in opens with (an unnecessary) chapter showcasing our main character, Knox, getting stood up by his fiancé and then promptly broken up with. It’s an okay introduction, but I do think it’s funny how this is the only part of the book that doesn’t have any sex whatsoever, and it’s even clever how a lack thereof works to highlight the pent up sexual frustration boiling over in Knox's relationship, which in turn foreshadows his somewhat mundane “horror movie protagonist” reaction to three burglars entering his house. Hey, it's not his fault that he'll take a ride on anyone's disco stick at this point! Yet, the story really isn't about Knox's shitty ex, so I really do think this would have been better if it had thrown us into the mix with absolutely zero context, and then revealed more to us through simple context clues. You know, it's like watching 2 Days in New York without subtitles turned on so you have no clue what’s going on except for the images presented on screen. Oh, that was just me? I’m just saying, this opening chapter gives context, but it reads more like a “shower thought” that occurs to someone the next day after losing an argument in an embarrassing way.

“I knew there was a reason I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. He wasn’t just hot, he was twisted.

I think it was Knox kicking his would-be fiancé in the balls that pushed it over the line for me, because even though such an action was well deserved and cathartic, it's still such an infantile action that it feels like it'd be more in line with a screwball comedy than a story that should be taken seriously. Well, it's not like a book titled Mafia Break-in is something that needs to be taken seriously, we're not reading The Odyssey here, but I'm not sure inciting laughter during a cheating subplot is exactly the desired effect. I can't lie, the inherent slapstick of his little Three Stooges routine immediately put me off of sympathizing with the gravity of his situation. They say writing can be therapeutic, and that by putting all your feelings down into your writing you can work out some serious issues in a healthy and mindful way, but the thing is, feelings don’t much take into account things like narrative structure or naturalistic pacing. In other words, a scene you might think is incredibly emotionally resonant can come across more like a Popeye gag than anything else. And I'm not making excuses here, but even though it’s undoubtedly super shitty how Knox's boyfriend broke up with him, is it really a surprise? Especially considering all the red flags this dude was flying? Sorry, but waiting four hours for someone at a restaurant is insane behavior. All taking up a table like a sucker. You give people ten minutes of leeway if they’re late, fifteen if you really like them, and forty-five minutes at the very most if they’ve texted you beforehand that they’re running late, but anything more than that, just based on faith alone, is next level clingy. Move on, it's done, my guy. So yeah, Knox then later takes his buddy up on the offer to house sit his mafia boyfriends mansion (???), to which a home alone Knox then encounters three burglars who really put the goon in "goon" heh heh. That's what you call coming out the woodwork har har. Anyway, the rest of the book is where this really picked up for me, because it’s just a long ass fuckfest. And I’m no prude (as shown in the fact that I even read this in the first place), but as a general practice I do tend to skim the sex scenes in these kinds of books (there's only so many times I can read the word "chub" before my eyes glaze over). And yet, because Mafia Break-in is so boldly and unapologetically sticks to a them (mostly fucking), it breaks the mold of a typical “twisted romance”. Like I said, it doesn’t try to comfort, and that's cool, because Knox isn’t looking to be comforted… he’s looking to get dicked down by two or more guys. Hey, you got to love a story that sticks to its guns and doesn’t change based on some corporate “happy ending” mandate. Besides, even though there wasn’t a real “man date”, Knox sure as hell got his “happy ending”, if you catch my drift. He had sex.

Otherwise, I did think it was really funny how everybody participating in the orgy had their own point-of-view chapter considering how short this book was. It felt like those sports announcers who are always going "and now let's check in on [blank]!" but because everybody is doing the same thing (fucking, mostly), the narration would barely change from chapter to chapter. Do we really need everybody's thoughts on what's going on (or down, if you know what I mean)? I don’t even remember most of their names, but one chapter would be like, “I’m horny” and the next would be like, “Yup, me too” and then it'd go back to the first guy who's like, "Still horny"! Nonetheless, this isn't a criticism, but rather just an observation, I don't care too much about the mechanics of storytelling when said story is strictly about a threesome. Hey, if getting a panoramic view of everyone participating in an orgy, cuck chair included, isn't the sole reason why the art of literature was created in the first place, then I don’t what is! And while the multiple perspectives angle (miraculously) works for this book, let’s be real, there’s only ever one thing on someone’s mind when in the midst of meeting the angel of small death, so I do often wonder whether or not authors ever start to run out of things to say when they have to keep describing the different ways dudes “get off”. I’m just saying, I have the utmost respect for people who write erotica, I truly do! And if I somehow ended up in a situation where I were writing a sex scene and I couldn’t just fade to black, you just know there’d be a lot of “okay, well now this guy just ejaculated or whatever” out of sheer disinterest on my end. But who knows, maybe I’d start making different bit characters just to keep things interesting! We could have an American guy all like, “I’m coming” and then switch to the British guy's point-of-view chapter and he’d be like, “I am arriving!” …wow, I’m really good at this. Look, I’m just brainstorming here, cut me some slack! Okay, enough about me, we're here for Mafia Break-in, a story that both feels incredibly concise and loosely connected all at the same time. I mean, despite the author trying to add a little severity to the story, a little edge, it really didn't help that everyone in this story had such goofy ass names. Ignoring the fact that the main character is named Knox for a minute (Mr. "Keep a' Knockin' but you can't come it" himself), I need to mention that one of the burglars is named… Raiden. Isn’t that the guy from Mortal Kombat? With the lightning powers!? My guy, what are you doing out here going to town on a twink when you should be consulting with the Elder Gods! Alright, dated references aside, I think I've done my due diligence. I'll stop talking about Mafia Break-in now! All you really need to know is that it’s not very good… and I loved it.

Dibble in this, and dibble in that / Get on his head like I am a brat / Play with his balls when he up to bat / Make daddy real proud like I'm Kyla Pratt.

The start of something wild… and maybe a little vengeful 😉

This short introduction had me hooked immediately! I already know the full story is going to be insane in the best way possible.

Knox? Oh, my heart. The way he stood his ground against his worthless ex was so satisfying. He didn’t let that trash bag of a human see him at his lowest, even though he had every reason to break down. That final word he delivered? Perfection. He deserved to walk away with his head high, and I love that he did. Now, if these mysterious masked men were to… let’s say… pay that ex a little visit and kindly escort him on a one-way trip to St. Pete with no return ticket? I wouldn’t object 🙂‍↕️.

And speaking of them, hello, chaos. Three masked men, each with their own brand of dark temptation? Oh, this is about to be dangerously good. The tension, the mystery, and the sheer promise of what’s to come? I can already tell I’m in for a wild ride. There's something about the way they take control, about the way they see Knox at his lowest and don’t let him drown in it… I just know this story is going to wreck me in the best way possible.

I need the full book, like, yesterday. Drama, heat, and whatever delicious chaos this is leading to, I’m so ready for it! 🔥

This was a short quick read that I wanted more of. Knox gets stood up by his boyfriend who turns out to be a jerk who was cheating on him. He goes to his best friends house after finding out that his jerk of an ex stole all his money and got him kicked out of his apartment. His friend is dating a mob boss and is leaving for a trip. Three men break in and they have hot crazy sex. I liked the idea of this book but I wanted more. Did the come back? What did he do regarding finding a place to live? I really wanted answers to those questions. This book did have an error in spelling. I am looking forward to reading this series.

This reads like a spicy bedtime story, to skip the meal and get straight to the dessert. There is always the setting, which takes around fifty percent of the entire book, because intrigue shall be present even in smut reads, otherwise known as porn-without-plot. In this book, Knox (the man on the cover, I find it very important to say) gets dumped by his boyfriend and is forced to stay at his best friend’s mansion that gets absolutely ransacked at night by three buff and apparently ready-to-fuck masked mafia men, because the number one rule to participate in a smut novella mainly intended to arouse the shit out of you is to have a big cock and high stamina. Never a long checklist, the audience is easy to please. I imagine things would have been different were it one of those mafia men (if not all) on the cover. I wonder if life would get better if we keep the bottoms on the covers. Keep the movement up.

It seems superficial to demand much from a book strictly meant to be a bedtime (intelectual?) porn video, especially since published erotica seems to pale in the face of so many web-published works (I am talking fanfiction + more) that have the liberty to out-slut every book in existence. And did this book out-slut them? Nah, but it did seem to try, which made me quite fond of it.

I can see how this can seem like the direct result of Booktok, because the target audience of this book is clearly ‘people who want to get railed by masked men’. It has become such a generic trope in dark romance and derivatives of it that it’s harder and harder to not accidentally stumble across one of them. Now, I see the catch of a, say, Ghost Face (aka the blandest choice ever, I’m aware), I’m not entirely a stranger to this phenomenon, but it is so odd to see this idea of masked men multiplying. I wonder where this originated from.

Short and simple mafia break in novella! Knox is down on his luck and staying at his friend’s place while he’s out of town. He gets a visit from three masked men, and one of the most unrealistic sm*t scenes I’ve ever read ensues 😂
It’s short and fun.

I read this as a short story as part of the Prolific Works giveaway.

2.5 stars. It was okay. There were several errors. I knew that there would be kinks that I don't normally enjoy our want to read a full length book about. So this as a short story was good enough for me to see if I wanted more. Turns out I don't. Plus I think I can pretty accurately tell what's gonna happen in the full length novel.

really liked it

I really liked this book. 4 stars for rating, 4 for spice. It’s basically all spice and low plot, but was a fun read; authors said they are working on more story for them since it isn’t a HEA in this novella. I’m looking forward to getting more about these characters.

If you are into short-dark-super kinky stuff, then this is for you!
I enjoyed it, but would be great if there's little more of it or something like closure. It started well with context and all but ending is like.....(nope! not gonna say). Kinda frustrating- how it ended.
Overall it's good!
