Fallen Gods of Thorncrown University

Of Heathens & Havoc: The Confessions of Mercy Soules

Rate this book
Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.
That’s how it begins.
Or how it began again.
It’s been six years since my last confession.
Once, I was an innocent. My life was a rose-colored dream with four best friends by my side: Eternity, Heath, Angel, and Saint—my big brother and my hero.
When Eternity was murdered, everything changed. My family put me in hiding to protect me. But no one can hide forever.
Now I’m back, attending a tiny Catholic college and attempting to move on with my life with the help of the sinfully tempting priest, Father Salvatore. I never expected to find Heath, Angel, and Saint roaming the halls of Thorncrown University, thirsting for vengeance.
I never expected them to hear my confession.
I never expected them to blackmail me with it.
They say they’ve paid for their sins. Now it’s my turn.
I must do my penance. On my knees. At their altar.
If I don’t, the whole world will know my sins.
If I do… I might just find out the truth behind Eternity’s murder.

You might not guess it when you pick up your first Selena novel, but Selena is a true romantic. She writes gritty, realistic New Adult contemporary novels with characters you'll love to hate and hate to love.

If reading about teens behaving badly upsets you, steer clear because these are full of drama, angst, fighting, drugs, sex, and rock & roll. There will be times you want to throw your Kindle. There will be lying, cheating, bullying, backstabbing, violence, and hard-earned, sweet redemption for those who won't give up on love. Because life's not always picture perfect, but every heart, no matter how broken and damaged, deserves love.

I feel like this book was written for shock value over an actual plot and individual character growth.
Normally I love Selena’s books but perhaps I’m not a fan of the co-write? I’m not sure what it was but it felt different than her “normal”.

So we have Mercy who ended up putting her (by adoption) brother and his friends in juvenile... They are free years later but she’s been in penance ever since, going to a highly religious school but has secret confessions to a priest about her sexual desires. She feels guilty. Dirty. Like this priest ….

Then we add in a secret underground cult and they (her former friends) choose Mercy as an unholy sacrifice… of sexual deviance.

“You will go, as a lamb to the slaughter, to the Hellhounds on HAVOC night. You will submit yourself to their desires, no matter how perverse, so that they may exorcise their demons upon you, transferring their sins in whatever ways they see fit, so that they may be without sin…”

“If you’re the sacrifice, your entire purpose in life is to be touched,” he says. “Touched… Tasted… Fucked.”

Mercy has a stalker too. We still don’t know who’s leaving her cryptic messages but their will be a book two.

Check those triggers warnings on this one.

Review for books 1 and 2

This series is kind of a mess but addicting like watching a car wreck. It needs some good editing, the plot is all over the place, there are so many tropes and almost none are done well. And yet, I read both books. Yes, all the while wincing and snorting, but I kept reading.
Don't go looking for a plot that makes sense, nor well-rounded characters. Be ready for an fmc who is so contradictory that you get whiplash for going from hating all the male characters to wanting to smack some sense into the fmc to feeling bad for her to hating her and then back again.
Book 3 is coming in October and I'm not sure I'll be reading it. It's on my tbr and we'll see if I still remember all that happened in books 1 and 2 by that time.

FMC gave me whiplash, as did one of the MMCs (there are 3).

I still don’t know what’s really going on in the plot but if you’re into blasphemy, primal k!nks, and a whole lot of angst, this one’s for you! My jaw dropped a few times and I’m pretty sure I blushed. I also rolled my eyes a little and cringed heavily twice 😅

But I was entertained.

Received ALC so I read this via audiobook, and enjoyed the narrators takes. They did a great job 👏

Audible version was so bad. The FMC was whiny, needy, & felt shame throughout the book. Zero character growth. Hard pass.
Please read the trigger warnings.

Mercy had everything she could have ever wanted in life, that was until her best friend Eternity was murdered, and the three boys she considered family Heath, Angel and her own brother Saint went away, because of the testimony that she gave. She was then shunned by her own family, sent to live with her aunt, in the hopes that everything would blow over.

For Mercy there is no forgiveness and there is no forgetting. Penance and repentance in the eyes of the lord is all she can ask for. Years later she returns home. Only the boys she left behind are no longer that, grown men who now live a life different to what it was before they went to juvie.

Everything has changed between Mercy, Heath, Angel and Saint. What they had, they can’t get back. But when they see Mercy, it brings up feelings of betrayal and resentment. In their minds they’ve paid for their sin, but now they’re going to make Mercy pay for hers.

When Mercy makes a confession, one that exposes her inner turmoil, guilt about her impure thoughts and feelings about her sexual desires, she did it in good faith, what she never expected was for them to hear those words come from her own mouth, but more so to blackmail her. Because if her deepest darkest sins gets out, she will be painted a liar, no one will look at her the same way.

All Mercy wants to do is live her life, move on from the past, but they will not let her forget. With the help of the priest, Father Salvatore, with his guidance she knows she will be lead down the righteous path, oh but to be sinfully tempted by a man of the cloth. But the plans that they have for her will have her on her knees and worshipping them at their altar.

Despite trying to keep herself hidden, she’s caught the attention of the Hellhounds and Sinners. Not only that, Mercy has been targeted by a stalker, someone is leaving messages in blood. They want her out. All Mercy wants is the truth about what happened to Eternity. Even when she begins to doubt herself and the events surrounding Eternity’s death come into question, could she have gotten it all wrong.

As The Master prepares Mercy as they the unholy sacrifice, Heath, Angel and Saint submit themselves to the guidance of their master, as Mercy submits not only to her desires, but their sinfully wicked touches. They exorcise their demons upon her flesh, transferring their sins in whatever ways they see fit,so they may be without sin, and in Mercy’s sacrifice the one thing she valued most they took in untold pleasure.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Please head the trigger warnings on this one.

Highly recommended both the author and the book. Now onto book two: Of Angels & Absolution to see how the remainder of the story unfolds for Mercy, Heath, Angel and Saint.

⚠️Check your triggers please!⚠️

This story jumps right in and hits the ground running. From the very first chapter it immediately grabbed my attention. I was hooked, line and sinker and just had to know what was going to happen next. The little breadcrumbs that we get of Mercy's history with her childhood friends and the murder of her best friend turned the story into a compelling "whodunit" story that had me chomping at the bits. This book definitely had a good amount of steam and LET 👏ME 👏TELL 👏YOU👏. The steam was STEAMING🤣🥵💦
overall, I enjoyed this book. but I did feel that something was slightly missing. I didnt connect with the characters as much as I hoped. Despite this, the intriguing storyline and suspenseful mystery made it a worthwhile read and i cant wait to see what happens with the rest of this series!

SO glad I powered through the beginning! I was a little bored, but I’m such a big fan of Selena’s books, so I stuck with it and am happy I did 🙂.
Was expecting more spice, but it picked up and I’m sure there’ll be plenty in the next book. So far my favorite is Angel 😌.
This book was different from Selena’s usual books that I’m used to.
& my FAVORITE MMC Royal made a little appearance 😌!

This was different from Selena’s usual work, but I’m here for it. I’m so happy she finally did a why-choose & I’m hoping there are more from her in the future. Saint is probably my favorite so far. I love his conflicting thoughts regarding Mercy and his need to protect her from others while simultaneously being cruel to her when in private. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Uh not sure

This book has a lot of words, but the book itself doesn't seem to be very good. I'm really into dark romances, especially university type, and it wasn't so much. This much, it's the female character I don't understand either. I'm hoping it's a role. She's playing with the Goody tissues. Father, forgive me for my seeing stuff, I just couldn't get into it. I'm going to go ahead and read book 2 and see what happens from there. But so far, this is a read at your own peril. Kind of book.

I will say it point blank. I walk a thin line between loving and hating Selena's writing. Mainly because what she writes is SO REAL that it makes your brain go haywire with the possibilities. "This CAN happen" sort of situations.

This one made me step back because, while there are some realities in it, I don't feel the realism the way I did with the others and that made it far more confusing rather than the down and dirty "Ok, I might have to walk away and come back but I can read it" sort of thing.

The story wraps around the SA and following *unalive* situation of our FMC's best friend. Our FMC has left for years, following a trial in which she subjected her brother (by marriage) and his two best friends to juvie by having gone against them in court. All she did was speak the truth, but the truth isn't always what it's made out to be. They dealt with time. They have dealt with what came after.

Now, she's back. And she's in a situation at a type of holy college where the boys she wants to figure out and yet run from the most are most likely the ones she NEEDS.

My biggest problem with the whole of it is just how... odd it is. It could be because I've always had a harder time with religion? So maybe it doesn't settle with me how these things are happening but at the same time, the writing is well done and I have fingers crossed that I'll be able to tap more into my interest with the next book to come out.

This was an interesting story. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the school and story line of childhood friends who ran into trouble and split up. I liked that each of the guys had a unique personality and didn't blend together. They each stood out and were easy to tell apart.
I really liked Saints protective streak and Angel's soft side. I think it will be fun when Heath finally breaks and I can't wait to see that.

The story did start a little slow but built up to a crazy end. There were times I had trouble remembering who were Hellhounds and who were Sinners and where they all fit in the story. There were a lot of names thrown around but once I figured out who everyone was it wasn't to hard to keep track.

Mercy seems almost too naive, like what 18 year old thinks like that. She came off closer to 12 than an adult. I know she wasn't living in town but she behaves like she's been living under a rock. I admired her for the fact that she is sticking to her plans even though things aren't going her way. I also liked that you could feel a connection between her and the guys.

I'm quite intrigued by this story and am looking forward to finding out what's really going on at this school and what everyone is up to and who is the Master?!! If you enjoy dark academy bully romance than this is right up your alley. Check the triggers though because there are plenty!

I need more!

I'm not one to pass up a Selena read and this was no exception, I was intrigued by the co-write too! I was excited to get into a new world and new characters, so the pop up cameo was awesome, keep an eye out for that 🤩

I have to admit, I was a little lost as to what we were hoping for with this story. I've been getting migraines and had to settle for the audiobook with this one, luckily it released really close together. It was okay, I wasn't a big fan of the narrators. The female narration came off very wishy washy and kind of whiney- annoying, and the male narration just didn't fit with hers. Idk, it wasn't awful but, I didn't love it. It distracted me from the actual story at times.

I know enough about Selena's writing style to know what to expect and I did like the characters so I still enjoyed the story so far, I think I'll prefer it on page. I think it was maybe a little shorter than expected? We got micro peeks into the mystery they pulled this tight knit group apart, but it was also played off like it hardly mattered in the end with how quickly they were willing to compromise with each other, hidden agenda aside.

I'm very intrigued, and super frustrated by the cliffhanger!!! Who was on the other line!? Was it who I think it was??

I feel catfished but in a good way? Like when a cliffhanger leaves you in a state of WTF?!!? Being a Faulkner fan my brain has been trying to piece together timeline and then of course weaving other characters not actually mentioned into the story. I figured out the “master” and I think I know who the call at the end is with. Also, Mercy indeed bc there are times I want to shake the crap out of this FMC for being so very innocent/naive/whiny but it all fits who she is to move the story forward. Selena has always had a brilliant way of writing characters I want to throttle bc she invokes that passion for a character. There is A LOT of spice. Like sweet Lord, no pun intended. Heath is a walking hormone, Angel and Saint are just ironic names for who they are. Bridgette and Jake narration took some adjusting for me bc I had to think of who the characters are and then how they were narrating them which is perfect for who the characters is. Mercy is whiny and Bridgette does a great job in bringing out that innocent airy tone and Jake’s portrayal of the male characters is brash and very dominant. This may sound like a negative review of it but it’s not. It’s a perfectly perform character narrative. On to book 2!

4.5⭐️! Who are you, Mercy Soules?

Of Heathens and Havoc is a co-writen and first book in The Fallen Gods of Thorncrown University Series and it ends in a WTF! cliffy.
Part of Selena's Faulknerverse, this time at Thorncrown U, it is a bit different from what we're used to by Selena, but the abrasiveness is queen and reigns supreme.

I don't read a lot of the Why Choose trope, but man, Am I happy I stuck with this one! With a feel of gothic dark academy, Thorncrowm did feel lugubrious to me, the story navigates the lives of four protagonists looking for vengeance, in opposite directions, the Whys and Whos envolving the mistery of Eternity's death, an innocent on the prowl and three fallen gods set on making her pay....and the Master Supreme, managing the rituals of the body, soul and sin!

I loved the authors' ability in bringing to a contemporary atmosphere such ancient practices, the oferends, the cleansing of the soul through the sins of the flesh, sacrificing the pure for a higher purpose. And mostly, that very extreme twist of religion, making men whole in their wills and wants.
Scorching at times, intensely chilling at others, the narrative reveals itself bit by bit, through actions, reactions, peril and desire....
Is the truth worth the sacrifice?
By now, only Mercy knows.....
And, are Heath, Saint and Angel worth of absolution?

what?!??!!!

HOLY MOTHER MARY, what did I just read?! 😍🔥👏🏻 This was intense! This was forbidden, taboo, absolutely dark and brutal and I could not look away! I had no idea what I was in for when I started this, but oh I am NOT disappointed!! Selena is an all time fav for me and honestly The Elite and The Envy series are seriously tough shoes to fill for me, and I am blown away with her ability to stun me into something that was delectable to read!! Let’s starts with the boys! Oh dear Lord, the boys! Bad boys that were impossible to not love with a backstory that made me unable to put this book down! FMC, Mercy, was the perfect pairing for this group and watching the dynamic made me crave nothing !!! Plot line with suspense, trauma, intrigue, loyalty and everything you would expect and hope from a childhood best friend group! Spice, oh my SMUTTY , CRAZY SPICE! As always triggers galore and oh so many delicious tropes! Ways to go Alexa and Selena! I am hooked! Talk about a cliff hanger and I’m DYING for number two!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥

Buckle up buttercup cuz this is a wild ride

Every time I open a book by the author Selena I know two things. 1 that the book is going to be DARK, and 2 that it’s going to be SPICY!!
This book is no different, it’s full of spice, suspense, trigger warnings, and pitch black mmcs. The FMC is innocent and struggles with the thoughts that she’s had since she was younger and the lust that she has been dealing with, but not knowing how to handle those thoughts because she is very very catholic. The MMC’s were betrayed by her as teenagers and now want revenge and to corrupt her innocence

Make sure to read the triggers and the authors note because this one isn’t for everyone. If you have an issue with perversion of Catholicism then put this book down you will not enjoy it. For those unhinged trash panda like me who have no triggers then sit down, shut up, and let these men make you blush.

That’s a good girl.

Super Dark is pretty much this whole story. It goes from the child hood friendship to wanting to destroy the friend that once was. The plot is a good one and I still have no clue on who did what or when. All I do know is what Mercy puts up with from these three boy/men is totally ridiculous. She has a strong conviction and is set on the path she wants to take. But she doesn't realize what she is in for. I kept say "she is done, she is going to leave now. They took it too far" but that would be the end of the story. The priest plays a roll but he isn't mentioned much. Mercy must have split personalities because one minute she is a bad ass then next she just rolls over. You can't help but feel sorry for her and what she has gone through. The entire book I was hoping she would grow a set with these guys. She really needs to seek help. Again Super dark and borderline rape in some scenes. So be warned.

Of Heathens and Havoc is book 1 of the Kings of Thorncrown University series. It is a dark romance featuring one innocent girl called Mercy and four love interests 3 who she already knows Saint, Heath and Angel. They have a past after they were betrayed by her and haven't seen each other for a few years. The boys now want revenge and plan to corrupt her innocence.

I enjoyed this book, it did take a few chapters for me to fully get into it but I'm so glad I carried on reading it. I enjoyed the school setting and how the three guys characters were so different but fitted together well as a group. The story is mysterious, intriguing, full of twists and turns and very dark so if you have triggers check them before you read this book. Can't wait to see what book 2 brings.

First time reader of these authors but I am waiting for book 2 with bated breath. This was dark, intriguing, not for everyone so if you’re expecting hearts and flowers then this is not the book for you. Mercy the FMC was sent away for her own safety when her 3 childhood friends went into juvie due to her confession years ago. The MCs are all different personality wise but have remained close and when they realise Mercy is back they agree she needs to pay for what she did and they just want to corrupt her. Lots more questions than answers at the moment, it started off a bit confusing for me but as it went along I was hooked. I need to know what happened to her best friend and who is the Master? Excited for the next book.

Selena has done it again!!! Of Heathens and Havoc was fan-freaking-tastic!!! I could not stop reading this book until I reached the end and wanted to scream when I got to the cliffhanger!! This book is a very dark taboo why choose romance. Selena has created a deliciously dark and exciting world in Faulkner. I so enjoy going back to her works with all her characters. This storyline was a chef’s kiss to taboo and can’t wait to see what comes next in the Kings of Thorncrown series. I loved the drama, suspense, mystery, angst and oh the spice was scorching hot.
I’m obsessed and patiently waiting to see what comes next for Mercy, Angel, Heath and Saint!!!.

I got so engrossed in this book. It was so intriguing and intense but is very, very dark.

I have a lot of questions swimming in my head after finishing this and am SO looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. The characters are so complex it’s crazy!! Who is the Master? What is Mercy up to? What actually happened to Eternity?

Fantastic read and can’t wait for more mystery and hopefully some answers in the next book.

There's definitely a hell of a lot of sinning and confession in this book. Mercy (FMC) is back in her hometown after the death/murder of her friend - Eternity and her testifying against her other friends - Angel, Heath & her adopted brother - Saint. Now she seems to be caught up in the middle of a secretive society where the 3 of them are a part of. Add to that a crush of Father Salvatore who Mercy has had steamy confessions with. It was so twistedly good. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next in this series.

I really enjoyed this story. I LOVE Selena's writing and this is no different. I didn't realize this was a series until about 70% in and there was still so much left unsolved. I hated Mercy so much until the very last chapter. lol She was beyond annoying and righteous. I want so much more of Father Salvatore and the Hellhounds. I know this series is going to be so good. There is so much story to be told and so many people we can expand on. Can't wait to continue reading.

4.25 / 5 stars!

This book was dark and spicy, and the audiobook narration was phenomenal! I absolutely love the narration and engineering choices in this audiobook. It has two forbidden romances amongst a why choose relationship, secret society, and bul!y romance. The tropes were fire and the story is definitely interesting and original. I don't know if at this point I love the FMC that much, but I'm excited to see if she grows on me. I love the suspense and secrets she and the boys are harboring, so I hope she pulls out an unsuspecting stop.

Of Heathens and Havoc by Selena
⭐️4.5/5
🌶️7/5
First, wholly cow this book is messed up but oooh so spicy. What once was a group of 5 is now only 3 and Mercy is on the outside since she caused the 3 to end up in juvie. This has a lot to do around religion so if that’s a trigger just FYI. So much happens in this book that I am going to do a reread to catch things I missed. I love Selena in general so I knew I’d love the book right away. It does end in a cliffhanger.

This story is twisted brilliance! Mercy and the Quint are reunited after well -read the book... Things are crazy and insane but rightfully so. Then the sacrifices made. The amount of fleshy goodness going on at a Catholic College is well titillating to say the least. Then the twist that shocks you and lets you know that you don't know the half of it!.

This was my first book by these authors.
Overall, I enjoyed it and it held my interest.
It had drama, secrets, twists, some spice, and more!
I have mixed feelings on all they guys, but I do like different things about each of them.
I liked Mercy as our FMC. I definitely think there is so much more or to question about her character though.
I think this was a great introduction. It got me hooked and left me wanting more!

Mercy was sent away for her own protection after her friend was murdered. Now she is back and attending college and the friends she left behind are there as well as a tempting priest. Her friends want her to pay for her sins, but will they also discover who killed their friend? Fast-paced dark read with loads of drama, suspense and twist and turns. The chemistry is intense, and the story fast paced, looking forward to more in the series. I loved it.

What a different story as to what Selena usually writes, it wasn't bad, I quite enjoyed it after I got past the first few chapters. I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan to read about religion in dark fiction books, it makes me a tad uncomfortable. I love Selena's writing and it can just suck you right in, unfortunately I was a bit bored with this book and as soon as it started picking up in ended on a cliffhanger.
