Challenging Assumptions. Just because we “think” something doesn’t make it true. Feist’s accessible approach to science helps students challenge their assumptions, understand research, and recognize that in Psychology, it’s not all black and white.
Virtually all students enter Introductory Psychology with preconceived notions―many of them incorrect. Psychology: Perspectives and Connections is designed to move students beyond what may seem obvious to them, to have them reevaluate the thoughts and beliefs they bring to the course. Feist & Rosenberg challenge students: Don’t believe everything you think! Students are encouraged to think critically and question preconceived notions, putting their ideas―and the ideas of others―to the test and understand that no one perspective tells the whole story.
Gregory John Feistis an American psychologist and Professor of Psychology at San Jose State University. He has published in the psychology of creativity, personality, psychology of science, motivated reasoning, the psychology of science, and the development of scientific talent.
This second edition is a little outdate, but still has most of the requisite information needed as an introduction to psychology. The downside of this edition is: Lack of update to DSM V information (it still has DSM IV-TR info). The upside is: Multiple "Psychology in the real world" articles within chapters. Challenge you Assumptions sections appearing before chapters. At the end of each chapter they connect what you have learned with where you are going. By bringing it all together, it allows the reader to look how everything is connected. Covers the research process involved with psychology. Connect the research process to real life example throughout. Overall, a fascinating read, and a wonderful starter book that should interest anyone in the field of Psychology.
