The Beginnings Duet #1

Dangerous Beginnings

Rate this book
With each heartbeat, she edges closer to the hell he promises, where love is as dangerous as the man offering it.

Isabella never imagined her job as a nurse in a high-security prison would thrust her into the heart of a living nightmare. They call him Diable—a nameless prisoner with a presence so dark and consuming it ripples through the underworld like a curse. His true name is Aslanov, a ruthless Bratva kingpin, a killer, a monster—and he is everything she should fear.
The closer she gets to the truth about this man, the more dangerous it becomes. Isabella is pulled deeper into his violent, seductive grasp, where terror and desire blur. With each step, she falls into the abyss, where his love is a cage, and surrender means destruction. In a world devoured by shadows, salvation is a whisper—and the price is your soul.

I have so much to say.. First of all I want to say that the story looked interesting when I saw a lot of good opinions and it was the first book of this author so I thought to myself why not. The only thing I liked was the author's writing, it was so well written for someone who has just written her first book. However, there are many things I didn't like about this story. The h is so stupid, she’s pathetic. When I read a dark romance and the H is supposed to be "dangerous" I have never seen anyone behave so stupidly as her, she was only doing stupid things to say "sorry" at the end. The H tried so much to pass himself off as someone "evil" who has no feelings and that everyone is afraid of him.... I only saw someone embarrassing who needs help.

Lately, every time I read a book I ask all the time if there is OW or cheating, because I hate it, I read book to escape reality so for me this question is crucial. The author said in her TikTok that there was no OW, is it a fucking joke? There are many people like me who don't want the mention of an OW. Even if there wasn't any in the book, the guy was in love with a girl 10 years ago to the point of crying for her. When I read a book I want that for the H it is the first time that he feels something for the h. But it was not the case here even if the guy has not been seen with women for a long time and he is indifferent when he sleeps with a girl. This is not what I was looking for when I ask if there has ever been someone he loved for the H, and of course the h is a virgin who is scared to love a man.. pathetic.
I hate authors who lie, it's not the first time it's happened for me unfortunately. I just wanted to warn people who have the same opinion as me.

I really wanted to continue the book, I started reading it yesterday until 6 am. It shows how I was invested in the development of their relationship even if I didn’t like the characters but the mention of an OW and I was out. Sorry not sorry

First of all thank you so much Myla for sending me your book 🥹💗
This was actually AMAZING for a debut novel !??

I love Aslanov so much 😩 what can I say, a man cold on the outside but soft on the inside is my weakness and he absolutely DELIVERED. Who said mafia men couldn’t be romantic 🫦 can we talk about his nicknames for 2 sec because not only he calls her « solnyshko = sunshine » but he also calls her « love, baby, sweetheart,… » like someone sedate me now

The ending absolutely wrecked me and I actually need book 2 like I need air because what do you mean it ended like THAT :)))

This book was so different than other dark romance books I’ve read and it was actually so refreshing to read this !

Bonus point : the playlist is amazing 🎶

If you liked Haunting Adeline and the LORDS series you will LOVE this book! It’s a mafia romance, forbidden love, high security jail and the MMC is unhinged, unpredictable and extremely dangerous! AND THE TENSION🥵 This book has me hooked from the very first chapter! Every single chapter had me captivated and kept me wanting to keep reading. I didn’t want this story to end! Myla has such a descriptive way of writing that really draws you into the story. I’m so excited for the release of the this book! And I can’t wait to get my hands on the second one!

“She is my undoing, yes—but also my salvation. My tether. My obsession.”

🖤 ARC Review 🖤

First of all thank you so much Myla for sending me this book in return for a honest review!!

I was scared to start this book, but also very excited. Why? Because I had never read a maffia romance book before. But boy oh boy did I enjoy myself!!!

I honestly still can’t believe this is Myla her DEBUT novel???? I think for a first book it is so so so good. Not only for a first book, but it is just a really good book.

The book follows Isabella. She works 3 jobs to pay her rent, one of them is as a night nurse in prison. When working one night there is this nameless man in prison who is injured and she needs to help attend his wounds. He hasn’t talked to anyone, but speaks a few words in Russian to her. Little did she know this was the beginning of a dangerous beginning 🤭😏

He is the leader of the Bratva, the most dangerous and man in all of Russia if not even the world??

This books pulled me in instantly and I wanted to keep on reading!! I just couldn’t stop.

Halfway through the book my rating was at 4 stars because I wished there was a bit more depth in the relationship beteren the FMC and MMC.

BUT THEN!!?!?!!? I thought I had the ending of the book all figured out, since it’s going to be a duet. BUT BOY OH BOY WAS I WRONG!! The last few chapters had me in a rollercoaster plottwist after plottwist. Everything happend that I wasn’t expecting and this is how the book turned into an easy 5 star read for me.

Myla girl if you’re reading this. I NEED book 2 now!!!! 🖤

⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 stars)

I had the pleasure of reading Dangerous Beginnings as an ARC after being approached by Myla, and I did so with love!

This book had me hooked with its suspense, the steady build-up, and the overall storyline, I truly enjoyed it. (Be aware, it’s a slow burn hihi)

A LOT happened in this book. There were so many twists I didn’t see coming at all, some things I’m still puzzled about, and certain events we still don’t have answers for… which only added to the intrigue! I needed to know more… I needed to keep reading…

However, there were a few things that kept it from being a full five-star read for me. While the depth between the FMC and MMC did develop at one point, their bond didn’t feel fully solidified yet, which I found a bit disappointing. I was hoping for a stronger connection between them.

I also expected the book to be a bit darker with a little more spice. That said, the spice that was there? Absolutely sizzling! Myla knows how to bring the heat in all the right places 😏.

And then… that ending! Myla, you better be almost done with book two because I need it ASAP! How could you leave me hanging like this? I’m impatient, and now I’m desperately waiting for the next book.

“Do you know what happens to traitors, Isabella?”

🌟 ARC Review 🌟

Let me tell you, Dangerous Beginnings by Myla Carbo had me hooked from the very first page! This dark psychological thriller romance is everything I didn’t know I needed. The tension, the danger, the obsession—it all felt so real that I couldn’t stop reading.

Plot
The story follows Isabella, a nurse trying to make ends meet, who starts working at a maximum-security prison. Her life is turned upside down when she’s assigned to care for a dangerous inmate—a man with no identity, a haunting presence, and an obsession with her that feels both terrifying and irresistible.

Characters
•Isabella: Oh, I loved her so much! She’s kind, relatable, and trying so hard to keep it together in a world that keeps throwing her into the deep end. Her fear, strength, and vulnerability made her journey feel so personal.

•Diable: Oh. My. God. This man is the epitome of dark, dangerous, and seductive. His obsession with Isabella had me on edge—every glance, every word felt like a loaded weapon. He’s unhinged, powerful, and yet there’s something about him that draws you in, just like Isabella.

What I Loved
The relationship between Isabella and the inmate is INTENSE. The way his obsession with her unfolds is both terrifying and mesmerizing. I found myself rooting for her, terrified for her, and, somehow, completely invested in him too. Myla Carbo writes their dynamic so well—it’s this slow, simmering burn of attraction and danger that keeps you glued to the page.

And the tension! Oh god, the tension had me holding my breath. Every interaction between them is charged with fear, desire, and something darker that I couldn’t look away from.

This book doesn’t shy away from heavy themes, but it handles them in a way that feels raw and honest. The writing is so atmospheric, making you feel like you’re right there with Isabella in the cold, sterile prison hallways—or trapped in the inmate’s chilling gaze.

This isn’t just a dark romance; it’s a deep dive into obsession, power, and the dangerous edges of desire. It’s seductive, haunting, and utterly unforgettable. I’m still thinking about the characters, the tension, and the way this book left me breathless.

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟✨ (4.5/5)

Thank you so much, Myla, for trusting me with this ARC! I absolutely devoured this book and can’t wait for the next installment in the series.

Yaaa I’m dropping this book. DNF at 6%

I refuse to willingly put myself through anymore torture. I would rate this zero stars but that’s not possible, so a one star it is.

Not a fan of the perspective changes - in what seems like literally every paragraph. In one chapter alone, there is like 7 perspective changes. (Idk I didn’t count)

This has to be a Wattpad spoof. You cannot convince me otherwise.

Predictable, repetitive, boring are the words I would use to describe this book. It actually felt like a chore picking up this book to read. How it is rated as high as it is will forever flabbergast me. Which is really a let down because I was genuinely looking forward to reading it after seeing all the reviews. :(

Not my cup of tea, but no shade on those whose it is (actually small shade).

4.5 stars!

I am so lucky to have been given the opportunity from Myla to ARC read Dangerous Beginnings and can I say how amazing this book is?!

The chemistry between the MMC and the FMC was palpable, and the connection totally tugs at your heartstrings. This book made me laugh, cry, and feel so much for the characters, their backstories, and their current situations.

I was hooked from the start to the end and there are so many beautifully written quotes too - most of which I can't share due to spoilers but I will share one that isn't.

"But there's a stark reality she hasn't accepted yet - there's no escaping what's coming for her. There is no escaping her past, she can only influence her present."

I can't wait for the second book to come out as Dangerous Beginnings ends on a cliffhanger. I need the next book already!!

DNF

The beginning was unnecessary long and confusing. I love that there is a POV of both characters, what I don’t love is that in the first chapters the POV switch constantly within the same chapter and also the same scene but just different POV. It made it very hard for me to continue because sometimes I was confused when the POV got changed again. In some chapters I think there was like a switch like 5 times. Stick to one or two POV during one chapter.

I also didn’t really like it tbh. The female is all no I’m scared this and that but doesn’t stand up for herself at all. The guy is to busy looking like he is truly evil but he isn’t. Didn’t love it and I thought I would tbh. Sad. Also didn’t love the OW. I hate that a main character is still hung up on a different lover. Usually it is mentioned somewhere but I think it was specified that this book didn’t have that but it kinda did.

I do have to say that for a first book, I am Dutch myself and I know that the author is Dutch, it is very impressive with the English she wrote. Most parts were very easy to follow except for the constant pov change. I know that writing a full book in a different language instead of your mother tongue can be a challenge. But i definitely didn’t know she was Dutch until I saw it one TikTok! I definitely see potential in this author!

This book was very entertaining to read but so unbelievable. At first, what is a naive young girl doing in a maximum security prison? And you can't tell me that a mafia boss would risk his whole life for the love of a girl. Still, it was very entertaining and I was never bored for a moment. If you have never read dark romance before, this is a good book to start with.

If you are into dark romance or want to give it a try, definitely read this book! Because I can see why so many people love it.

If you are more like me and don’t like the fragile tiny girl and the big bad angry scary man who would kill everyone except his new toy. Because he is her soft spot. Maybe don’t hahaha

I had the privilege to read Dangerous Beginings. 🥹🥹I haven’t read a mafia romance before and my goodness wasn’t Aslanov possessive of Isabella.
- Forbidden love
- possessive MMC
- stalking trope (we all know I love this one).
The fact this is Myla’s debut novel astounds me because the way she writes it’s really captivating. The character building, the details for every scene to how the characters were feeling. As I was reading I could imagine what was happening and fully immerse myself into the story! The fact I have to now wait for the second book!!! 😭 Thank you so so much Myla for letting me read your book. Also, how can I source myself an Aslanov? Asking for a friend?

Book: Dangerous Beginnings by Myla Carbo

I want to thank Myla Carbo for reaching out to me and trusting me with your work! I absolutely enjoyed reading your book!! A dark Mafia world with badass characters

“𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 ‘𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘯𝘺𝘴𝘩𝘬𝘰’ 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴?” 𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘴, 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴. “𝘐𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 ‘𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦’ 𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘶𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮—𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴, 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬. 𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶.”

Aslanov knows how to use a nickname!! A hardened Mafia man who secretly holds a soft spot for his Solnyshko. He's instantly obsessed the second Isabella walks into the room! Very interesting story. I love the tension between these two. Their first meeting takes place in prison. Aslanov as a prisoner and Isabella as his nurse. Little did they know this was the beginning of their dangerous story

“𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘰𝘴, 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸…𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵.”

Loved how their relationship develops, how they slowly realize what they mean to each other, and what they would do for each other!

This gripping first book in the Duology had me hooked from the start. The dedication sets the tone perfectly: “For those who dance in darkness, finding thrill in shadows and love in chaos. This is for the ones who embrace the dangerous edges of desire, where light is but a memory and love is an untamed beast.” From there, we meet the mysterious MMC. At first, all we know is that he's dangerous and currently locked up for just a few hours. We’re also introduced to Isabella, the FMC, a nurse working in the maximum-security prison where our unknown MMC currently is. She’s tasked with treating a male prisoner’s injuries but is instructed by her supervisor not to engage with him. I loved the dual POV, allowing us to experience key moments from both Isabella’s and the MMC’s perspectives.

As the story unfolds, we learn the true identity of the mystery man. He goes by several names, one of which is Diable. He becomes irresistibly drawn to Isabella, and when he escapes from prison, he spares her life while killing everyone else. There's something uniquely compelling about Isabella, and she, too, finds herself pulled toward him. Despite his brutal nature, she sees something deeper within him. He sets her free, insisting she forget about him and never seek him out. Naturally, Isabella does the opposite. Her search for answers leads her to discover his true identity: Aslanov, the head of one of the most powerful Russian Mafia families.

What really stood out to me was Aslanov’s character development. While he continues to project the image of a ruthless and commanding leader, moments with Isabella reveal a more vulnerable and softer side of him. Isabella’s own growth is just as striking. Having suffered from physical abuse in her past, she’s avoided trusting men—until Aslanov, who becomes the first to make her feel safe and valued.

The book ends on an unexpected cliffhanger that left me waiting for the next installment. Overall, I loved this dark, suspenseful romance and can’t wait to continue the journey with these characters.

I wanted to love this book after I saw glimpses on TikTok, but unfortunately, it fell flat for me.

In general, the writing style did not work for me, and I came across a few errors (which I understand happens), but I kept reading to give the book the benefit of the doubt.

Unfortunately, the characters didn't resonate with me. I found the MMC had potential, although his actions were very repetitive and predictable, and the FMC was just overly immature for my personal preference.

The overall plot also seemed to be a bit all over the place, and a lot of it just felt rushed. I felt like it lacked some depth. This again could just be my preference.

This one was definitely not for me, but I always urge people to form their own opinions as it might be for a different reader.

DNF 53% of the way through the book.

This man is a piece of SHIT who likes to abuse and control woman.

He loves to use his power to manipulate, scare and confuse the FMC and it’s really getting repetitive.

He completely starves her and tortures her (both physically and mentally).

I’m all for a dark romance book, but this is straight up ABUSE.

He told her to stay in his house. Then his best friend came and said that they should go out. She was hesitant to go because he told her to stay but the best friend assured her that he asked him and he said it was okay.

WHICH KEEP IN MIND HE TOLD THE BEST FRIEND SHE COULD GO OUT.

Then when they went out the best friend abandons her to teach her a lesson, she gets groped by some random dud and has a panic attack.

Then the MMC is super mad and tells her he’s going to teach her a lesson for disobeying him???!?

1. Red Flag that he’s so controlling
2. Red flag that he told her she could go out only to punish her because she went out?!?! make it make sense
3. She was literally assaulted and he’s thinking of ways to punish her because he’s a pathetic loser

I love the FMC but the MMC is a complete dick.

I really liked the ending of Dangerous beginnings.

It had the right amount of cliffhanger but also explaining stuff.

And please tell mr that I‘m not the only one that forgot about Nick right? Right?????

But 1 thing sadly made it a 4⭐️

That being the contract between Isabella and Aslanov.

He told her that if she came with him, there would be no going back and that she would be his.

But even after she f-up multiple times, she didn’t get punished- she got to make a contract.

A contract that said that if he didn’t follow its rules,
she could leave him and they would be strangers.

Like, my man stick to your promise‘s :(

Idk why but that REALLY murcked me off

But other then that, the book was really good.

I like that it wasn’t a love ob first sight but also bot a slow burn.
I did thought that it was a bit weird that Isabella went to work with the police with what had just happened to her.

But none the less the time I waited for this book was not time wasted.

Disappointing and Not Worth the Hype (from someone who doesn't give 1 star easily).

I saw someone promoting this book on TikTok, and it looked really promising. The cover, the synopsis—everything made me think this would be an amazing read. Unfortunately, that was far from the case.

After reading about 50% of the book, I found myself forcing my way through it. At that point, I realized it just wasn’t for me, and honestly, I should have stopped much sooner. The writing felt flat, the characters were one-dimensional, and the plot never managed to grab my attention. What made it even more frustrating was that the book initially seemed to have so much potential but completely failed to deliver in my opinion.

Maybe this book will appeal to a different audience, but for me, it was a disappointment.

Isabella is genuinely such a dumbass character, how shes still alive is beyond me 💀 Aslanov gave her so many chances to walk away. But what does this dumbass do, she kept sticking her nose back into his business.

Isabella acts all brave then once she’s faced with her consequences she gets scared like a little rat. Honestly he should have just done her a favour and just killed her cause she has no survival skills.

I had to DNF at 38%, all of sudden they are lusting after each other without even having a single proper conversation.

DNF at 67%.
I genuinely couldn’t do this. At first, the story seemed like it had potential, but I quickly realized that this book wasn’t going to be good. I had to physically force myself to keep reading until I couldn’t anymore. Both characters are dumb as hell—I can’t stand either of them. I wanted to like this so badly, but the story made no sense whatsoever.
