Between Smoke and Shadow

Rate this book
With treacherous weather and inhospitable soil, the Savoan kingdom is a brutal place to survive—especially if you don’t possess magic.

As an indentured servant, working to buy back her freedom, Rune Ealde knows this all too well. Terrified her debt will never be paid, Rune joins a growing rebellion to steal the power that’s always just beyond reach. The rebels plan to overthrow the kingdom’s founder, the Architect, to find freedom and to build a better world. But if they fail, Rune will face the same fate as her criminal an excruciating death, delivered by the Architect himself.

Prince Harrick Ademas has always been in power, but he still feels weak in his father’s presence. No more than a pawn in the Architect’s elaborate scheme, Harrick has learned to obey commands or face the deadly consequences. He once dreamt of freeing Savoa, but challenging the Architect now is too dangerous to imagine, the downfall too dire to risk.

When a chance encounter brings Rune and Harrick together, their friendship blossoms into unexpected hope. Soon, lingering touches turn to whispered promises, and their forbidden love becomes their purest form of magic. But as they’re imagining a future together, one with peace between their people, the Architect is growing restless. He’s ready for change, and if he succeeds, there might not be a kingdom left to save.

BETWEEN SMOKE AND SHADOW is an open-door romantasy with forbidden love, court intrigue, and a unique magic system. It is told in first person, alternating points of view. The perfect next read for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent, and The Ever King by LJ Andrews.

This story was a wild ride, no doubt.

I was sucked in by it right away. It was brutal and almost hopeless for a good bit too. However, I really felt for the characters and the world they found themselves in. I wanted to keep reading and see how they could possibly escape their situation. I think there was a good base to the story here.

A few weakness though: The romance went from simmering to sex very quickly. How Rune would ever feel safe sleeping with a royal.. I do not know. I needed more time with them together. Yet, the time they did get together... how come no one was looking for them?

I also don't understand how or what the magic fully even IS. Which left me confused as to how some people have it and others don't. There wasn't enough backstory for me.

Overall, I was entertained but I'm left with more questions than I want, especially because this didn't really have a cliffhanger... so what's next?

This was a decent debut and I will read more from this author.

rune was such a lovely fmc. she was so enjoyable and just refreshing to read about. she wasn’t a stereotypical stabby woman, as she was fairly scared and not acted how i would expect someone would act in certain situations. she wasn’t a calm and collected warrior, and her actions reflected this perfectly.

harrick was also a fantastic mmc. he wasn’t a walking red flag like so many romantasy love interests tend to be. he was charming and really lovable.

the romance???? i don’t even know where to begin or what to say about it. it was both slow burn and not at the same time. it was enjoyable and realistic all at once.

despite being on the shorter side for fantasy (not complaining, i prefer shorter books), the world building wasn’t lacking in the slightest. it was rich and so well developed. the only issue i had was with some of the technology. i’m not saying it’s bad, it just threw me a little as i wasn’t expecting it.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Between Smoke & Shadow.

I laughed, I cried, I literally screamed. I was worried with it being a shorter book that I wasn’t going to get the world building and character development I thrive but Bree did an amazing job giving EVERYTHING without making it feel like it was rushed!
I loved Rune from the second we meet her in the book and she was an FMC I didn’t end up annoyed with. I also knew from the second we met Harrick that I was going to love him and Bree also didn’t disappoint with his development throughout the book.
Everything was immaculate. The spice that was in there was perfectly placed and not too much.
I can’t wait to see what else happens in this series and I am so happy I was able to read it!

If you love political intrigue, slow-burn romance, dystopian vibes with a unique and intriguing magic system, then this book is absolutely for you! I was so incredibly lucky to receive an advanced review copy (ARC) and will absolutely be buying this when it's released in a few weeks!

In a world controlled and ruled by the cruel, ancient Architect, Rune Ealde struggles to find her place in the classist society where she is considered nothing more than a slave. Forced into servitude to pay for her Father's crimes, Rune spends every year of her life being abused by the Elites, when one day she joins the Rebellion. Whilst working to overthrow the Royal Family, Rune must protect her heart from the very person she is destined to kill, or everything that she has worked towards will be ruined.

🖤 Political intrigue
🖤 Dystopian society
🖤 Forbidden love
🖤 Intriguing magic system
🖤 He falls first
🖤 Slow-burn romance (spicy)
🖤 Rebellion
🖤 Dual POV

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟 .75

I loved this book, but I did feel like we needed more character development from Rune. It was really only the last 10% of the book where I started to feel like she was embracing her strength and resilience! I was also SO interested in the world and the magic system and I felt like I just needed MORE from these two aspects of the book. This book could've been 700 pages for me and I would've devoured it as quickly as I did 300 pages! But I'm just a greedy girl

It wasn’t until about 25% through the book that I started to understand the world and the magic system and the little unique details for this world, as well as the setting; once technology started being mentioned I understood this to be a Hunger Games Divergent ish style world. The story kept me going throughout my confusion, I was getting more interested. I enjoyed both Harrick and Rune. I think this is a great standalone or it could be good following the both of them as a series.

DEAR AUTHOR BREE WILDE,

I will HAPPILY eat up a book about Tora and Dae. Plsplsplsplsplspslspslpls 😫🙏🙏

THIS WAS SO GOOD. AHH
This debut was incredible. Every time I read an indie authors work, I’m reminded how greatly talented they can be. This needs more recognition!! Classic romantasy where he’s the sweetest ONLY to her.

The world was well set up and interesting. I like the Architect’s character. Deeply insufferable of course, but he had this viscous nature that kept me afraid for our leads.

Rune might seem timid at first, but you definitely don’t want to cross her. She has a deep love for her people and ready to sacrifice anything to defend them. When she meets Harrick, it’s the first time she feels safe enough around someone.

From the moment he set eyes on her HE WAS SMITTEN. 🥰 he literally was like ‘I like her and want to get to know her’ Harrick does everything in his power to save Rune from being punished as a servant, even when it puts his crown on the line. Because this blue-eyed beauty has woven herself deep into his heart.

The last few chapters were so tense, and I was afraid there wasn’t gonna be a happy ending, but Bree didn’t disappoint. 👏👏

I love them. SO MUCH!! He doesn’t make her feel bad about herself when she can’t do things, or thinks she not worth his time. We love words of affirmation over here!

Please read this if you love any kind of kingdom in trouble, kindhearted prince who falls for someone lower in rank, she’s hiding secrets, story.

Wow! What a debut! I absolutely loved the world building, the magic system, and the tense and oppressive feel through the first half of the book, as we follow Rune and her struggle to survive and escape.

There is a delicious slow burn romance, political/royal machinations, great character dynamics, and strong writing that make this book un-put-downable. I thought the world was really unique!

Also - it's a standalone! LOL. I feel like that's so rare these days. Although, I'd honestly love more with Rune and Harrick with how things are left at the end of the book lol. Also, I loved Harrick's sister, they had great banter back and forth.

I received a book in a PR box for promotion, thank you to the author! My thoughts on my review are my own.

If you’re looking for a quick read where the MMC falls first and unalives anyone who harms her this one is for you.  This book has concise world building and is easy to follow. Rune and Harrick make an unlikely couple, but they just seem to work. It takes Rune’s understanding and support for Harrick to become what he was meant to be. Magic belongs to just a few people but could solve so many of the problems for everyone. I would have loved if the book had more of an epilogue describing what happened with the items Rune and Vale found in the room. Spice level 2.5, but satisfying.

closer to 3.5

Overall, I liked it.
Rune is basically Piglet (yes, like the one from Winnie the Pooh) she's scared of everything and cries a lot but you still want her around because she might just save the day. I liked that a FMC wasn't instantly a total badass the second she was able to steal a weapon off someone and instead panicked a lot but not in a really annoying way.
Harrik is a relucent prince who wants to see his kingdom succeed despite his father who wants the magic of the land for himself. He also has a literal evil twin who could rule instead if their father so chooses and that's a problem.
Rune and Harrik meet, and a slow burn romance starts. In my opinion it could have been slower with more court intrigue going on in between. It's almost all right there. I needed more of the world. There is a lot of information that I think could have been filled in instead of left to read between the lines. I needed more because if felt like they moved awfully fast for a stolen touches type of story. Even comparing it to a regency Bridgerton type of romance this felt like they fell really fast. The world was cool though and I enjoyed the magic systems in place.

I also hope there is a second because I have a lot of questions... like the (not really a spoiler) magic room and am I picturing elevators correctly? I want to know more about the princess and what Rune and Harrick do next. I would even take a prequel about the architect and what his deal is.

twisty suspenseful romantasy

I hadn't read the blurb before downloading the book, I only knew it was a debut novel, and based off the cover, assumed that it would be some type of romantasy book, likely ending in a cliffhanger until the following book was released. What I found instead, was more than I had expected. I very much enjoyed the twists and suspense, the enemies-to-lovers vibe, and the fight for freedom that both Rune and Harrick unknowingly were both working towards. I love an underdog-Cinderella type tale, and this had just enough of those elements to keep me flipping the pages - I couldn't put it down. I loved the way Harrick and Rune fought for each other, and their happiness, and was pleasantly surprised by the bits of spice thrown in. I didn't see the last twist coming, but it sure did give me all the feels. This happy ending was well-deserved!!

Absolutely addicting!! I had to binge read this, because it was so good, I couldn't put it down!

This was a dark, but easy and enjoyable read. The world and the magic system were both very unique concepts, which I really enjoyed. I was also very intrigued by the architect and, I think there needs to be another book, about him and his origin story, or continuing where book 1 ended, but that includes more details about him, and the world he was looking to go back to. I think for book one, I learned just enough information about him to keep me on my toes and have me hoping there will be more books in this world that describe everything more. Because it is all very intriguing! I'd definitely read more books in this world!

This was such an amazing debut! I adored it!

Holy wow!!! I could absolutely not put this book down!! From the moment I started it two days ago it kind of consumed my every thought. It’s one of those books that reads so effortlessly and well you don’t want to put it down. The story was crafted so well, and Rune and Harrick now have a very special place in my heart. I think Bree Wilde is going to be a name a lot of us become familiar with because this debut romantasy was so so good!! The plot flowed, the romance and spicy scenes were *chefs kiss*, and the ending was well-wrapped. Raving review all around, amazing book!! If you loved Heartless Hunter, Fourth Wing, or practically any popular fantasy book this book is on par and will heal you!!

I loved this book! It appears to be a standalone, which is awesome, but I totally could have devoured an entire series of Rune & Harrick. Their dynamic was everything!

The magic in this story was so unique, and I absolutely loved how it was woven into the plot. It felt fresh and added so much depth to the world.

If you love these tropes, you need to read this book:
✨ Burn the world for her
✨ Virgin
✨ Touch her and die
✨ One bed
✨ Forced proximity

Seriously, don’t sleep on this one—read this book! It’s really great.

loved it!

Really really enjoyed this book!! Wasn’t sure what to expect and first and took me a few pages to grasp the lingo, but once I did, I enjoyed the world and characters. I like how this book easily could be a stand alone, there was closure at the end (I honestly wasn’t sure leading up to it if there would be!!) but there is also room to grow should Bree want to turn this into a series. The spice was good, not over done and not cringeworthy and the tension between characters, both romantic and not, was excellent. Definitely recommend!

ARC read/review.
Ooft. I am going to need a minute to put this together. I usually sit with my notebook and pen as I read (especially an ARC) to take notes as I go. For this, not a single note was written because I was SO ABSORBED in the story I couldn't take my eyes off my kindle screen.
I won't lie, I was a little sceptical at first; the plot and the characters seemed like a big undertaking for a shorter-ish book, but that scepticism was absolutely knocked out of me the second I started reading.
The world building was excellent, I loved the explanations of the political environment and the background to the fantasy lands I found myself getting sucked into. The character development was thoughtful, consistent, and by the end I had 2 MCs that I absolutely adored.
The premise of the 2 MCs coming from starkly different worlds is always a favourite trope of mine and this book pulled it off perfectly.
The authors command of emotions was intense; I cried, I squealed, I had heart palpitations (that's normal, right?!). The FMC was a very REAL character, relatable in her humanity, her strengths and her foibles. The MMC was hot but had beautiful depth and character development.
I honestly can't speak highly enough of this ARC novel; I want more within the universe, I want sequels, I want prequels, I want it all.
Thank you for a wonderful opportunity and I hope to see much more from this author!

Uhm, hello debut novel?! What?! This was my chef’s kiss of a fantasy novel.

Here’s the thing—my least favorite part of a fantasy novel is world building. I just don’t care. Just start the story and I’ll figure out what I need, ya know? This book does EXACTLY that. She jumps RIGHT in and the whole time you’re unsure if you’re supposed to be figuring it out or if you missed something or if it’s an Easter egg but at the end of the day I just loved it all. If you love the world stuff, if you want or need to understand the details and the lore and the magic to fully enjoy your plot, then this might feel a smidge lacking for you. But for me? Perfection.

The ONLY thing keeping this from an enthusiastic 5 star is the MMC’s insta-love for the FMC. It felt a little like “where is this coming from?” but at some point I just had to accept that we’re doing this.

Also, I LOVE a “touch her and die” trope and BREE WILDE HAS DONE IT WELL HERE! Will hope for a sequel, or maybe Tora’s story, or anything from this author. Add this one to your TBR!

✨Between Smoke and Shadow - ARC review✨
3/5⭐️ 2/5🌶️

I need more about this world! I still have SO many questions left about this world and why it is the way it is! The world building is off to a great start and it had me imagining all kind of explanations for where they are and why there’s modern tech and a dystopian future feel but with magic and talk of other worlds.

I did feel like the romantic connection was rushed, or maybe magic, so hopefully we get more context surrounding that in a sequel. There was a lot of focus on Harrick thinking or telling Rune she was ‘pretty’. It happened more than I’d expect and it felt like Rune deserved better than just being thought of as pretty. It made it feel like more of a fantasy to be told that you’re pretty rather than the spice or the love.

The Architect counting to five like an exasperated dad trying to get the kids into a car at one point did make me giggle when he’s supposed to be this mighty god with an elaborate scheme.

All in all, there were bits that were very YA but with the spice it’s definitely intended for an older audience. I did love the direction this series may be heading and I’m keen to find out more about the world and how the ending shapes the future of it. I liked it but I wish it had gone deeper! I need more!

A surprising hidden gem!

This book was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was. I was hooked from the beginning and finished it in three days. Mind you, I'm not a fast reader anymore so this was very quick for me. With the way the author writes, I would have never known this was a debut novel. I loved the storyline and every character felt relevant. This book pulled me out of a reading slump and I want to buy the physical version just to have a trophy for myself haha.

The only reason it's not a 5 star for me is because I felt like Rune needed more "screen time" in a sense. I felt like she could have had more time to show who she really was and grown into her strengths before the end of the book. And while I loved the romance, it felt like Harrick had feelings for her and for a while I couldn't figure out why. It seemed like a huge fascination simply with her eyes, but I kept thinking why does he like her so much? What does he see in her that's so special, he doesn't know anything about her yet? I felt like the depth of her character needed to be explored more. BUT that's my personal opinion and obviously didn't stop me from absolutely devouring this book!

Overall, I definitely recommend this book. It's fast paced, well written, and will get you out of that slump for sure!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for this book and I really enjoyed it!

This is a great debut romantasy, well written and nicely paced. The world building was creative and easy to follow and the unlikely romance between prince and servant felt natural and believable.

Our FMC, Rune, is so refreshing! She isn’t our typical super powered leading lady - she has no magical gifts or innate fighting ability, she doesn’t pick up a sword and somehow know exactly how to wield it. After reading so many books about stabby heroines, this was a welcome change!

Harrick, our MMC, is gorgeous. He is gentle, kind, and hopeful for a better world, not allowing the cruelty around him to get inside his heart and harden it. I love the dynamic between the two main characters!

I would love to read more about this world! I recommend this for any fans of forbidden love, or anyone looking for an MMC that isn’t the morally grey stereotype we’re reading about everywhere at the moment.

"That's our strength, you know. They always underestimate us."

This book nailed the dual POV switch!
The transitions were seamless, making it easy to connect with both characters. and I was genuinely impressed by how naturally the swaps were.
Both Rune and Harrick were were written really well, and I loved their character development through the book.

The start felt a bit slow and confusing, but trust me... Push through it!
It really picks up, and becomes totally worth it.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of this debut novel. And I really enjoyed it! I was very skeptical about it being a much shorter fantasy novel than I’m used to. But the world building for me wasn’t too much or lacking in anyway.

Rune was a refreshing FMC, she’s not “the chosen one” or surprisingly has magical powers half way through. She’s ordinary. She has flaws and humanity and purpose. Harrick was a lovely MMC. Even being surrounded by so much cruelty he had so much compassion. I really loved how gentle and patient he was with Rune. We love a man who constantly asks for consent!

Spice: 🌶️.5

I’d love to see a sequel to this, maybe about Tora and Dae?

While others fight to survive, we fight to live.

This book had a lot of potential, but it never fully delivered for me. The slow start set up a dark, desperate atmosphere, which could have been immersive, but instead, it felt like it dragged. The pacing didn’t flow naturally—things were happening, but I never felt truly pulled into the story.

Rune, as the female lead, was frustratingly passive. I felt like she spent most of the book as a damsel in distress, gullible and waiting for others to take action. Even when she was taking action she still needed saving. Harrick, despite being a prince with immense power, often felt powerless, as if he was constantly at the mercy of others. While their connection started off rather abruptly and felt purely physical, it shifted toward something deeper by the end—though, at that point, it leaned too much into cheesy territory.

The writing itself wasn’t bad, and there were some good moments, but certain details felt underdeveloped. I really wanted to love this story, but it never fully captivated me. It wasn’t bad, just not as compelling as I’d hoped.

ARC Review:
Thank you so much, Bree, for providing me with an ARC. I truly wish you the best in your writing journey and future projects!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to fully connect with this story and ended up DNFing at about 75%. I tried picking it up multiple times, but I found myself struggling to stay engaged. It wasn’t quite what I expected based on the premise, and I think that contributed to my difficulty.

While Rune had potential as a character trying to overthrow the kingdom, I felt she lacked the skills or personality to truly carry that storyline. Her actions and decisions didn’t resonate with me, and I found her hard to root for.

Harrick, on the other hand, came across as self-righteous and whiny, which made it tough to connect with his character as well. His constant self-loathing and lack of self-esteem became frustrating over time. Though he expressed dissatisfaction with his society, I didn’t see him take meaningful steps to change it during the portion I read.

I’m sure this book will find its audience, but unfortunately, it wasn’t a match for me.

The concept of this book was super interesting but absolutely no background information about the Architect or his world was provided and the world building was lacking. I wanted to know SO much more about the Kingdom’s history and class system but was sadly disappointed. There was no real plot development and none of the characters stuck out to me.
