We all want to buy, cook and eat better food for ourselves and those we love. But getting all your produce from organic farmers’ markets or baking sourdough from scratch isn’t realistic for most people. In The Weekly Grocery Shop, Nabula El Mourid, of game-changing grocery shopping app Supermarket Swap, teaches us how to make better choices – nutrition and budget wise – in the aisles so we can better plan a week of delicious and easy meals at home.
The big chains are where most of us shop, but admitting this has become somewhat taboo. Nabula El Mourid has taken the shame out of supermarkets by arming her loyal and engaged audience with everything they need to make informed, nourishing and budget-conscious choices since launching in 2020. In her first book, Nabs distils this knowledge on how to best navigate the plethora of brand options (and lengthy ingredients lists) and how to get the best deals in your trolley, then turns her attention to over 70 recipes that will take you from breakfast to dinner, and all through the week.
Scalable recipes, and ideas for snacks, leftovers and lunchboxes, all hinge on 6 weekly meal plans and their relevant shopping baskets will see you feeding those you love the best possible food. Because that pathway to better eating, better cooking and better budgeting, always, always starts with the weekly shop.
Recently I’ve been re-thinking the way I shop and what is actually in the food I purchase and this guide has dropped into my life at the perfect time.
Do you feel overwhelmed at the supermarket, are you concerned about ultra-processed foods, want to save money and desire healthier options for the family? I can’t rave enough about this inspiring book.
Do you check the ingredients list label to see what percentage of the food product you’re buying you’re actually getting, for example manufacturers will skimp on the main ingredient and bulk up the product with cheaper ingredients/additives. I was shocked when I started checking this out, there is so much difference between different brands, it’s crazy. I use my Woolworths App and pull up the ingredients list to make it easier as the print is sometimes too small to read on the actual products.
Nabula gives the reader an opportunity to be more organised, cook and shop healthier and you’ll be assisted with meal planning along with many of her favourite recipes which include her weekly meal plans to make life easier.

Thank you so much Hardie Grant Books for an early copy of the book.
frankly the meal plans and recipes are too involved/too many ingredients for a weeknight dinner. they look delicious no doubt but this would not be practical most nights as a full time working mom of 2. the premise is good, and there's some good information about ingredients, additives and food storage, and how to go about meal planning but the actual meal plans are not as simple and versatile as I was hoping.
The information isn't anything new and can be found anywhere online. The recipes for the most part are okay. Her cheeseburger triangles are beef it's ham, so a few recipes aren't necessarily common.
a good book for those just beginning to meal prep. not so good if you know what you’re doing. The recipes feel a little too involved for weeknight meals, even with the prep ahead of time
