While I wish I had discovered this book before my trip to Vietnam this past December (2025) through early January (2026), I still found a great deal of value reading this book. It's given me a lot of new ideas for things to do and see when I return to Vietnam. And, it was a hugely useful reference as I was putting together my photo books of my recent Vietnam trip. I was able to get information and details about numerous places I visited. I was able to make sure I had the correct names and spellings of food, towns, places, people, and areas. And, I was able to understand more of the history of the country of my birth.
This was a truly informative travel book with gorgeous colorful photographs that never failed to either make me smile or fill me with envy that I wasn't able to visit some of these recommended places. (You can't do everything on a seventeen day trip!) The two authors Thao Phan and a fellow Joshua, Joshua Zukas, do a fantastic job describing the country. Both clearly know what they are writing about. I also appreciated how this book is broken down into various categories like "Nature," Food & Drink," "Slow Travel," "History," and "Activities and Sports" rather than regular travel books who just detail city after city. Intrepid lets you find the subject you are interested in and then gives you lots of advice of things and activities to do from all around the country.
I know I will be returning to this book often as both a way to put together an itinerary for an upcoming trip but also has a memory book to let me remember some of the places, foods, and things I have already done. Nice book!
