David Lynch: His Work, His World

Rate this book
An in-depth, richly illustrated exploration of the work and life of cinema and TV’s greatest cult creator.

Without David Lynch, our world would have been a much more ordinary place. As a filmmaker, screenwriter, designer, musician, visual artist and living avatar of all things uncanny, his influence pervaded every corner of our culture.

Alongside his game-changing TV series "Twin Peaks", Lynch also created big-screen masterpieces such as his DIY debut "Eraserhead" and unconventional mystery thrillers "Blue Velvet", "Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Drive". But Lynch was also a cult figure in his own right, releasing albums under his own name, staging art shows, photography exhibitions and design showcases from LA to Milan, and sharing his spiritual philosophy and love of Transcendental Meditation with audiences around the globe.

Published in a lavish, slip-cased edition, David His Work, His World covers all aspects of this truly eclectic output while also exploring Lynch’s many influences to tell the full story of how he worked, created, thought and lived.

I'm Tom Huddleston, author of fiction and non-fiction for adults and children. I've written books on famous creatives including DAVID LYNCH: HIS WORK, HIS WORLD; THE WORLDS OF GEORGE RR MARTIN and THE WORLDS OF DUNE, all about the inspirations behind the greatest SF novel of all time.

For younger readers, I've written original adventure stories like the FLOODWORLD trilogy (FLOODWORLD, DUSTROAD and STORMTIDE), along with several episodes in the WARHAMMER ADVENTURES and STAR WARS: ADVENTURES IN WILD SPACE series.

I also write about film and TV for publications including Time Out, the BFI and The Guardian, and I sing in a folk-rock band called The No Sorrows.

I was born in Kendal and raised in North Yorkshire, though I now live in London. I realise that I almost have the same name as Loki, but rest assured I'm not him: I'm slightly rounder and a lot less famous. However, I have managed to make him admit that it's his family who spell their name wrong, not mine.

DAVID LYNCH: HIS WORK, HIS WORLD is the book I had always hoped would be written about this multi-faceted cultural Artist. Although I have been tangentially aware of his music, drawings, paintings, web site, endorsement of Transcendental Meditation (including the David Lynch Foundation) and live event creations, I primarily associate David Lynch with his movies and television work (mostly "Twin Peaks" and "Twin Peaks: The Return" as examples of the latter). This book is noted as being "Unofficial and Unauthorized," yet it is incredibly rich in both information and photographs.

Tom Huddleston, obviously an admirer of Lynch, is careful to provide much more of "what is known" than "what is speculative" about his subject. So many articles, books and scholarly pieces have been written about the "meaning" behind his stories. Much of this has been fostered by Lynch not being forthcoming with straightforward explanations such as what the story of "Eraserhead" was actually intended to convey. Sometimes he would make statements about the interpretation belonging to the viewer. Huddleston states that Lynch merged the subconscious with reality, and I think that quite easily explains why Lynch didn't give "definitive answers" about his work. After all, if I have a particularly vivid nighttime dream, I wouldn't have a rational answer for why unicorns were baking cookies either! Also, the book is refreshingly free of narrowing an analysis to "the meaning of the color red in his stories."

The same holds true for recurring imagery. Yes, there are a number of references to "The Wizard of Oz" movie in multiple films, but "The Wizard of Oz" is also in his subconscious memory. Lynch had denied that he used improvisation in his films, although he was perfectly willing to explore a spontaneous "conversation" with his subconscious. What did this "conversation" mean? Perhaps Lynch was absolutely right in referring the meaning to the viewer.

There have been several famous deaths that left a powerful imprint on me. The loss of David Lynch was one of them. At the same time, DAVID LYNCH: HIS WORK, HIS WORLD forms a comfortable link for me that I will certainly be revisiting when I return to be immersed in his stories. The insights offered here were clear, and they gave me an even deeper appreciation that inspiration for Art exists all around us ... just waiting to be noticed.

I luckily received a critic’s copy of this and it is beautiful, that is the first thing that struck me. I’m excited to display this amongst my collection. This is a large, coffee table book that comes with a slip cover as well.

Now that I’ve set up what it looks like, this is an in-depth retrospective to the career of a filmmaker who truly changed the landscape. My first foray into his works was through Eraserhead. That was one I watched in college. I didn’t return until after seeing Blue Velvet when broadening my horizons.

What I like here is that this is broken up into different sections, starting with his humble beginnings and with his student project, Eraserhead. It then uses major projects to describe what Lynch was doing, working with and how his films from there where then made. It is interesting that some of my favorite directors, Lynch included, tended to have issues with studios wanting to give them money. They need to have their input if they do. Seeing how it affected things he created like Dune, The Elephant Man and “Twin Peaks” is eye opening.

I’ll also say that I didn’t necessarily realize different things about his career until reading this. Certain people that he met and would continue to work on. Projects he was attached to and didn’t come to fruition. There is just a wealth of knowledge and information that help to truly appreciate someone like Lynch.

Then to circle back to talk about this work. I love all the pictures that are included. This could just be shots of Lynch during that era. There are also behind the scenes ones of him as well as actors. There are also images of things that Lynch would reference as an inspiration, whether it was another film or work. It also could be that of actors that he was a fan of. The time and care that went into curating this something would be a daunting task. It just added something to it for me so I wanted to give that credit.

In conclusion, this is a fantastic and comprehensive look into the life and career of a truly unique artist. From its stunning visual presentation to its in-depth exploration of Lynch’s creative process and influences, this book offers a rich and rewarding experience for both long-time fans and those new to his enigmatic world. It's a testament to the enduring impact of his work and a beautiful addition to any film enthusiast's collection.

a really interesting book! Lots of fun facts about Lynch and his body of work, and some cool pictures. However, I found the writing to be subpar at times. I understand being opinionated, but often opinions are presented as facts, while alternative interpretations were dismissed in a very dismissive tone. In particular, the various controversies that arose during Lynch‘s life are almost mentioned in passing, and are discussed in a way that would feel more appropriate in a school essay than in a printed book. His photography could also have been discussed in more detail instead of just being mentioned.
It was quite affordable though and is nicely sized, so I will keep it as a coffee table book.
