THE NEW THRILLER FROM THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER 1190 - Humble layman Will Bowman lives in the countryside with his pregnant wife, when soldiers from Richard Lionheart's army tear through his home. Will is beaten unconscious, and awakes to find his wife murdered, his farm burnt down, and his life forever changed.
In vengeance, Will infiltrates Richard's army to find the marauding gang, and finds himself swept along in the march of the Crusades. With the help of new allies and fuelled by his loss, Will crosses Europe with the King's army.
Can Will avenge his wife? Or will he be swept away by the unstoppable force of Richard's Crusade?
Always excited to read the work of Scott Mariani, I reached for this series debut. Will Bowman awaits the arrival of his first child, but returns home to find his pregnant wife killed by a group of men. He begins a journey to avenge them, taking many a winding road and meeting numerous people along the way. While Will is fuelled by revenge, this journey will also be one of reflection and careful growth. Mariani delivers a great debut in this series set during the Middle Ages.
In 1190, Will Bowman remains a lowly farmer with a penchant for the bow. He is eagerly awaiting his first child. When in his way home one day, he notices his farm burning and is beaten unconscious by Richard Lionheart’s men. When he awakens, his farm is destroyed and his wife—and unborn child—-are murdered. This changes him forever and begins a journey that Will hopes to undertake for retribution.
Armed with his bow and ready for revenge, Will begins a journey to find Richard’s men. He has only one plan in mind and hopes to return the bloody favour. Along the way, Will comes across many adventure and people who will shape his thoughts, helping him discover the path on which he ought to travel.
Ready to do whatever it takes, Will infiltrates the King’s army and tries to find those who killed his family. The Crusades are beginning and Will will march across Europe, hoping to find those who killed all he holds dear, while being wrapped up in a political movement. What adventures await him, no one could predict. Mariani delves into history with this piece and keeps the reader enthralled.
There is something exciting about the work of Scott Mariani, mixing history and excitement with each book. This series debut works well and keeps the action high, as the narrative builds from chapter to chapter. Characters entertain and connect with the reader as the adventure builds, providing a great story and one that is flavoured by historical events. Plot points balance known history and curious forks developed by Scott Mariani. I am eager to stay focussed on this series, which has me excited!
Kudos Mr. Mariani, for a wonderful series debut that has much potential.
My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review. Well written and researched atmospheric descriptive with a real feel for time and place. Excellent characters throughout totally engaging from first to last page, with plenty of action, and I look forward to the next instalment of our brave fearless somewhat naive heroes adventures. Completely recommended.
Brilliant! Another memorable character to follow the adventures of. I was saddened when the Ben Hope series of books ended, as I'd enjoyed all of them, to the point where I'd pre-order the next title before I'd read the one I already had. If Scott Mariani writes a series of novels about William Bowman, then I'll be doing the same. In fact, I've already got 'The Knight's Pledge' on order already. William Bowman is a peasant farmer in the village of Foxwood. As he arrives home, he sees his property on fire, and the men at arms attacking his pregnant wife, Beatrice. Will comes round after the fight, the soldiers have gone and his wife and child are dead. He vows to take vengeance on the men responsible. Will searches the countryside, eventually joining King Richard's latest Crusade, in his quest to find and deal with the men at arms. He faces many challenges during his journey to the Holy Land, but makes a few good friends along the way, who look after him. I hope there'll be more than just two William Bowman stories. Scott Mariani is assured of my readership if there are.
📖 The Pilgrim’s Revenge – a breathtaking tale of betrayal, survival, and redemption. 🔥 Gripping storytelling 🔥 Complex characters 🔥 Twists that shock and thrill
This was the first book I had read by Scott Mariani, and I can’t remember the last time I read a book so quick! The characters are likeable and the story was so engaging. I can’t wait to read the next instalment of Will Bowman.
A complete departure from my normal genre, and a departure from what I expect from Scott Mariani, but nevertheless, an interesting and adventurous read.
As someone new to Scott Mariani’s writing and this genre in general, The Pilgrim's Revenge was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I was immediately drawn into Will Bowman's journey and felt every moment of his struggle throughout the book. His strength of character and determination were very compelling, making him a hero I rooted for from start to finish.
The side characters, Gabriel and Samson, were equally memorable. Their loyalty, camaraderie, and the way they always had each other's backs gave the story a strong emotional core. It was heartwarming to see a true "found family" form around Will, providing both support and hope amid the challenges they faced.
Definitely not my normal genre but I couldn’t resist a Scott Mariani novel, and this proved to be really enjoyable. The plot of the story is in the title as Will travels across Europe to seek revenge for the murder of his wife and unborn child. His journey brings him into contact with both friends and foes, with ups and downs along the way. Well researched and informative, this book suggests passion project as much as entertaining novel. Thank you to Netgalley for the advance reader copy.
A new direction but with familiar writing that makes for a fascinating and compelling tale set in the time of the crusades, featuring a new protagonist to fill the Ben Hope void this was so much better than I could have imagined, the historical commentary seamlessly blended with a gripping tale of revenge and determination was highly enjoyable and impossible to leave for long without picking up to see what happened next. Can’t wait for more in this new series.
I’m a long time fan of Scott Mariani but admit I wasn’t looking forward to this new direction from the Ben Hope series. Initially I thought it a bit slow going, then I realised I was totally immersed and couldn’t put it down. Weaving historical facts into the storyline you feel you’re living the story. Can’t wait for the next instalment!
Scott Mariani, a name already etched into the annals of thriller fiction as the Sunday Times number one bestselling author of the globe-trotting Ben Hope series, embarks on a bold and exhilarating new literary pilgrimage with The Pilgrim's Revenge. This novel marks the inaugural entry into the highly anticipated Will Bowman series, a significant and ambitious departure from contemporary suspense into the rich, brutal, and captivating tapestry of twelfth-century historical fiction.
The year is 1190. England is abuzz with the fervour of the impending Third Crusade. Far from the machinations of kings and popes, humble layman Will Bowman lives a life of simple contentment in the quiet countryside with his beloved pregnant wife, Beatrice. But this idyllic existence is savagely torn asunder when a band of soldiers, ostensibly part of King Richard the Lionheart's formidable army, rampages through their home. Will is brutally beaten and left for dead, only to awaken to an unimaginable nightmare: his wife murdered, his farm razed to ashes, and his entire world irrevocably shattered.
Fueled by an all-consuming grief that quickly ignites into a burning, unyielding desire for retribution, Will makes a fateful decision. He infiltrates Richard's crusading forces, his sole, grim purpose to hunt down the marauding killers responsible for his devastating loss. This singular, desperate quest inadvertently sweeps him into the vast, chaotic, and perilous march of the Third Crusade itself.
Mariani masterfully charts Will's profound transformation. Initially a man unprepared for the savage realities of deadly serious combat , Will's journey is not merely a physical one across the landscapes of Europe, but an internal odyssey of hardening resolve and burgeoning martial prowess. He discovers a talent for soldiering, comradeship and a bent to command , eventually rising to the esteemed rank of a knight. This evolution from a grief-stricken farmer to a seasoned and respected warrior is rendered with compelling nuance, making Will a protagonist readers will find themselves root[ing] for from start to finish.
The narrative is steeped in exemplary and meticulously researched historical detail, bringing the tumultuous era of the Third Crusade to vivid, breathing life. Mariani skillfully incorporates lesser-known historical events, such as the crusader fleet's often-overlooked detour to Portugal, adding layers of authenticity that will delight history aficionados. The journey takes readers through evocative, dusty, hot and exotic locales, from the shores of England to the politically charged atmosphere of Sicily—where King Richard frees his sister Joanna and meets his future bride Berengaria of Navarre—and onto a wonderful, vivid depiction of the conquest of Cyprus. Will even finds himself interacting with towering historical figures like Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine.
True to Mariani's established style, the pacing is relentless and action-packed, a veritable roller coaster ride punctuated by bloody battles, exquisite swordplay and a thrilling storyline. Yet, this isn't just a tale of unbridled violence. Amidst the carnage and his personal quest for vengeance, Will forges powerful bonds with new allies, particularly the memorable Gabriel and Samson. Their loyalty, camaraderie, and the way they always had each other's backs provide a strong emotional core to the narrative, creating a true 'found family' that offers solace and strength in a brutal world.
While the revenge motif is a classic one, Mariani infuses it with a fresh, visceral energy, making Will's journey both deeply personal and sweepingly epic. The Pilgrim's Revenge is a promising start to what is sure to be a long and captivating series. Fans of historical adventure in the vein of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden, as well as those who appreciate a thriller's relentless pace set against a meticulously crafted historical backdrop, will find themselves utterly hooked. This is more than just a new direction for a beloved author; it's the forging of a new legend. Highly recommended for those seeking a historical fiction experience that is as emotionally resonant as it is action-packed.
I received a copy of The Pilgrim's Revenge from Hachette Australia to review.
Rating of 4.5.
Prepare for war in Scott Mariani’s compelling and action-packed historical thriller, The Pilgrim’s Revenge, an awesome read with some real heart to it.
Plot Synopsis:
1190 - Humble layman Will Bowman lives in the countryside with his pregnant wife, when soldiers from Richard Lionheart's army tear through his home.
The Pilgrim’s Revenge was an outstanding and action-packed novel from Mariani, who dives into full historic fiction with great enthusiasm.
🏹The book - 1st in the Will Bowman series - based on the time period of the Third Crusade, tells the story of a villager, Will Bowman, who takes up the cross and joins Richard Lionheart's army, with the hope of finding the marauding soldiers who murdered his wife and unborn child. But soon he will find himself swept away by the unstoppable force of the Crusade across Europe, not knowing what horrific adventures he will have to undergo to avenge his family.
🏹This is my first reading by Scott, and I'm quite impressed by his writing. He had beautifully crafted Will's fictional story around the actual events and meticulously researched the history to bring the Middle Ages to life. The narrative is smooth and well-written, with lots of atmospheric descriptions and plenty of action that keep me enthralled.
🏹All the characters were well written and feel relatable. Will's character arc - he was fueled by revenge, but his journey was also one of reflection and careful growth - was awesome. I liked the camaraderie he shared with his friend Gabriel, Samson, Roderick, etc., and I must say you can't hate enough Sir Baron Ranulf and his cronies, the actual perpetrators.
🏹Lastly, Scott had given a satisfactory ending to Will's revenge story, but his journey is far from over. He'll have to face many new dangers in Richard's army, and I'm really excited to read how Scott will unfold them in the next book.
Overall, it was an amazing start to a wonderful series that has much potential. The fans of Matthew Harffy, Ben Kane, and Simon Scarrow will surely gonna love it. Highly recommended.
The Pilgrim's Revenge is a classic piece of Historical Fiction in the vein of Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' novels that made for a fun quick read, without taking up too much brain power.
The worldbuilding in the novel is pretty basic, delivered almost entirely through the classic, 'main character conveniently accompanied by a very knowledgeable friend' trope. But it's effective and it delivers the information the reader needs without getting bogged down in long exposition. The book does lack that escapist feel of the best historical fiction however, I was far from lost in the world of the Third Crusade.
The main character and his motley crew lack much real depth as characters, Will Bowman's motivation is singular and his personality is fairly bland. But, as a group, they make an entertaining enough bunch to spend a few hundred pages with.
The fight scenes are enjoyable, if a little far-fetched at times. It all comes together to make an enjoyable 'film-like' book that, while not massively original or emotional, had me invested in the quest. I've already picked up book two!
Scott Mariani’s The Pilgrim’s Revenge is classic storytelling on an epic scale, weaving historical elements seamlessly into the narrative. The book is rich with fascinating details about the pilgrims and their journey, adding authenticity and depth to the story.
The Pilgrim’s Revenge balances moments of gripping action with quieter, more reflective scenes. The plot is full of twists and turns, keeping readers guessing until the end. The action sequences are vividly described, with an unusually cinematic quality.
The protagonist, Will Bowman, is as compelling as he is flawed. Scott Mariani has crafted a page-turner that is thought-provoking and exhilarating, making it a must-read for fans of his books. Highly recommended.
This is Book 1 of a new series by Scott Mariani. I've read most of Mariani’s Ben Hope series and was interested to try this, which is historical fiction. Set in 1190 the protagonist is Will Bowman, whose pregnant wife is killed by rogue soldiers. Vowing revenge, Will tracks the men to Southampton to find they’ve already left on a ship to join the crusade. He boards a later ship and the novel follows his adventures as he pursues the men to Jerusalem. I had no idea what this would be like to read but loved it! It's gripping, fast-paced, full of action and with descriptions of places and people which make you feel you’re on the journey with Will. I'm definitely going to read the next book (due out later this year). Review by MadDog, Oundle Crime
I was really sad to find that the Ben Hope books ended, having read them all, but I suppose there is only so far a character can go, so at some stage a new character was always due to come along.
After reading this book, It seems that ‘Will’ and his group, will be great characters to follow on their adventures on the Crusades.
I don’t want to give too much away, to any readers, but if you enjoyed Ben Hope then I believe you will like these books and the characters, especially as they mature.
Well, that took longer than expected to finish! I usually read the Ben Hope books in about 2 or 3 days, but was getting a bit fed up with them, and was therefore glad when Scott finished at number 30. So, a new series, and an historically set one at that was most welcome. But for some reason I just wasn’t gripped by the story, although it does have a satisfying end. Will I continue reading Will Bowman’s story? No sure at the moment. Hopefully the next will be a more gripping read.
Couldn't put this book down, and as usual it was a fast paced page turner, where I was transported back in Time where I was embedded I to the sights sounds and smells of the past leaping off the pages and setting my heart racing first in joy, then sorrow then adrenaline as each episode of Will's life unfolds, can't wait for part 2 Another master piece by Scott
Have read many of the Ben Hope books and thoroughly enjoyed them and as I love medieval history thought this would be up my street. What a disappointment. The story and characters whilst authentic in history and detail are rather plodding and predictive in the story. All the characters are very one dimentional and rather unrealistic at times especially the scrapes Will gets into. Did finish the book but not sure I will be looking for the sequel.
I didn’t know expect this. When I reserved the book I thought, Scott Mariani, Ben Hope. Crikey! What a departure. Really not my kind of book or a genre I like, but I ploughed through. It’s well written, as usual, with some page turning moments, and as this is the first of two, I think I won’t be revisiting the sequel.
William Bowman, a new and very different character to follow. Very, very well written but what else could we expect from such a master storyteller as Scott Mariani, More to come I hope. Historical fiction at it's best.
A new direction and a new beginning , there are lots of fresh interesting characters and it was fun to see the bonds develop. A strong start to the series and an enjoyable read . Instead of one hero we have a band of friends and I am looking forward to their adventures.
The first of Mariani’s new series is a cracker. Fast paced with a great storyline, well fleshed out characters and enough action to keep to reading into the small hours. This promises to be a great series.
This was different in the sense of being all historical, but was very much of a pattern with the Ben Hope books. It was interesting historically, but the ending was not much of a twist.
Ive read book after book about the crusades and Richard the Lionheart, this book yes a bit slow on the up take but it does get going about a third of the way through. It looks like its going to be a good series to follow, so cant wait for the next book to come out, either on paper back or kindle.
