The Knightsbridge Crowd

Rate this book
Knightsbridge is one London's most exclusive post codes with cut-throat rules for anyone trying to make it into the social scene. Paze juggles a budding career as a social columnist turned investigative journalist with ensuring she's got one foot in the crowd while her best friend, Allegra, reigns as the high society gatekeeper. With the help of the equally glamorous and witty Mansour, the tight knit group must navigate the reality of living in a place where staying ahead often matters more than doing the right thing.

Getting onto the invite list is hard, but staying in is even harder - particularly when your dream job hangs on an exposé that will rock the crowd to its core. Is everything fair play in order to belong? What secrets hide in plain sight when appearances are carefully curated?

The Knightsbridge Crowd offers a fly on the wall perspective into the glamour, the labels, the pettiness, and criminal activities that entangle London's jet set.

Knightsbridge is one of London’s best-known districts – the home of the luxurious and exclusive Harrods department store and some of the city’s wealthiest residents. It is where the highest of high society’s trendy young people live, meet, mingle, shop, and party.

In “The Knightsbridge Crowd,” author Mariana De’ Carli takes readers inside the realm of London’s young ultra-wealthy and ultra-connected from the perspective of an outsider looking into a world where no matter how desperately she tries, she will never really belong. Paze, Paisley Taylor-Jones, is an aspiring fledgling journalist who lands an entry-level job at Sizzle Media, the hottest digital and social media business in the city. She is anxious to impress Nathan, her immediate boss, but ultimately she wants to impress the founder and owner of Sizzle Media, the powerful Florence Moray.

Paze and her circle are the products of an exclusive school that attracts wealthy international students, including the beautiful Allegra, the exotic Mansour, and, from her university days, the stunning Mila. While the others all have the means to dress exquisitely, dine and drink at the best restaurants and clubs, travel to the hottest continental resorts, and live in the comfort of homes with servants and staff, Paze is different. Her striving middle-class parents, while successful, struggled to give her the education that brought her into the Knightsbridge milieu.

Unlike her socially favored friends, Paze lives in the tiniest of apartments, buys many of her status clothes at high-end thrift shops, and struggles to make ends meet. Allegra and the others often pick up the tab for Paze when they meet for meals or drinks and occasionally gift her with the clothes she can’t afford.

When Nathan learns of Paze’s social connections, he manipulates her with assignments that will eventually entrap her in situations that require her to make choices between her aspirations and ambition versus her tenuous insider status and friendships. Torn between her friends and her work, her boundaries become blurred, then broken.

Further fueled by her ambition, Paze continues to seek Nathan’s support and Florence’s recognition. She connects with Celine, Florence’s executive assistant, and they begin what first feels like a new friendship. But as the two become closer, Paze begins to wonder about the nature of Celine’s associations, including her clandestine relationship with Florence’s ex-husband, Lord Thurrington. When she goes to Nathan with her observations, it leads to her involvement with Celine and Thurrington’s unsavory business activities. Eventually, Paze finds herself caught up in something that may be more than a little dangerous.

“The Knightsbridge Crowd” is about one young British woman’s determination to rise speedily in her profession, the struggles she experiences in living in a society that puts a high value on appearances and the possession of money, but also the dangerous conflict between morality and amorality in the conduct of personal relationships and friendships. This reviewer also felt that it may have been somewhat influenced by the events and activities reminiscent of one of the biggest and most widely reported sexual scandals in recent history, involving both British and American participants, some at very high levels.

Remembering my own early career goals, I was sympathetic at first to Paze’s ambitions and eagerness to get ahead in her early career, but she became more and more unlikable as she allowed herself to be drawn into situations and behaviors that she knew were suspect. She crossed lines she shouldn’t have, and in the end, I found her moral ambiguity disappointing.

Mariana De’ Carli’s “The Knightsbridge Crowd” is a novel for adults due to the nature of some of the events involved, though it might be a cautionary tale for some very mature young adults. It is also a novel for those who enjoy the world of fashionable clothing, swank environments, and lavish food and drink – the author has skillfully painted a picture of those details, and of the all-over London setting.

A teaser following the text promotes a forthcoming book two set in a glamorous Spanish resort…will Paze and the crowd return? Only time will tell.

Fresh, gripping and so NOT disappointing.
I absolutely enjoyed reading it. Intertwining storylines, clashes of social class and new love; themes that I personally really enjoyed exploring in the context of Knightsbridge, London. The story raises a lot of questions. What mostly kept me reading is "how far is one willing to go to belong". If you are looking for a fast and exciting read, this should be your next one.

The setting is vivid and charming, and the characters feel real, with emotions and struggles that are easy to relate to. What I loved most was how the story combines beauty and honesty. It’s the kind of book that makes you slow down and really enjoy the details.
