老房子

Rate this book

What a remarkable book-I have never seen anything like it. This meticulously illustrated book educates readers about 20th century Russian history. The entire book is set in a large apartment in Moscow, but as history unfolds, the apartment changes to reflect the changes happening in Russia. The apartment is first occupied by a wealthy family and later segmented into communal apartments after the Bolshevik Revolution. The many generations who live there experience the communist takeover, World War II, Stalinism, the end of the Cold War, and the beginnings of democracy. The book is packed with artifacts from toys, furniture, poems, to newspaper clippings and rationing cards. While the book is labeled as a children's book, it is older readers (adults especially) who will genuinely appreciate this work.

A sweet visit to the past. Recognized many common household items as well as personal stories in this book as they were a part of my childhood and family history too. Brough back many memories. The drawings were stunning!

palun tõlkige keegi see raamat eesti keelde nüüdkohepraegu.

A fascinating insight into recent Russian history from a family’s perspective

We had the opportunity to visit such an apartment in St. Petersburg the summer of 2019, and we saw how it must have been for these families. It was fascinating to read and see how it all came about.

Translated book
Story of a Russian family over a 100 years in one apartment (love the Russian throughout).

I have read this book cover to cover two times because it is so fascinating-- for older readers with numerous details and historical facts (lots of back matter with a timeline, list of characters, glossary, and more).

The Muromtsev family lives in the same apartment generation after generation through many social and political changes. Some of the furniture and other unique items are passed down, whereas other objects disappear in this oversized book with newspaper clippings, photographs and memorabilia.

This unique and oversize book features illustrations created with watercolor, ink, Micron pens, and Photoshop and provides an insider's view of one apartment in Moscow over the course of 100 years during a century that saw radical change. Not only does the apartment itself change, eventually being re-purposed as a cafe after serving as a home for various residents. The first family to move in was the Muromtsevs who brought their possessions and furniture to this spacious apartment in 1902. Over the next one hundred years, various members of the family will live there while parts of the apartment become rooms to house other families. The pages are filled with notes, clippings, foods, and various objects that were typical at the time as readers move through the decades and experience vicariously political events as well as WWI and WWII that changed the lives of these residents. Because there are so many family members across the decades, it can get a little confusing to read the book, but I was thoroughly impressed with the research that went into this project as well as the efforts the creators made to include actual objects such as a theatre ticket, coins, clothing, and even the various cats and dogs that were a part of this family's lives. Fans of history will find this book compelling, and there may be those youngsters who will be inspired to explore the history and stories found in their own dwelling places.

This was a very interesting book, classified as juvenile fiction in my library system, in which a single apartment is the main focus for all its residents and events from 1902 through 2002 in Moscow. This is definitely an Own voices book, as both the author and illustrator are citizens of Russia. This oversized book (slightly over 13 1/2 inches tall) is copiously illustrated on each page, and centers around the Muromtsev family, the first family to move into the apartment. The book follows this format: a double-page spread, narrated by a child of approximately 10 years of age, introduces what is happening with the family that year (e.g., 1914). The next double-page spread adds more details about people and objects in the apartment and events in that year. Through the 100 years covered, multiple families have to share the apartment, and through the illustrations, the reader sees how the apartment changes to accommodate all of these families. A double-page spread in the front of the book, and another at the back of the book introduces all of the people which participate in the stories. Backmatter includes an author's note; a glossary of things, people, and events; a timeline of Russian/Soviet history; a bibliography; and an index. The incredibly detailed illustrations also incorporate a search-and-find game. This is a unique way for readers to learn about Russian people and history.

This book follows the passage of time in one specific Russian apartment over the course of the 20th century, detailing snippets from the lives of the people living there, and a bit of political context to explain the changes we see happening. I definitely think this is how history should be taught - by anchoring it in the lived life of average people, and branching out from there. The book is dense in information but not in a way that feels overwhelming - a lot is communicated just in the drawings, which are visually pleasing as well as informative. As an Eastern European, it was fun to look for the similarities and differences with my own culture and history, and I feel like I've learned a lot. I love the way it's all put together, the authors did a great job. Highly recommended.

I don't usually post picture books on here because I read so many of them in the course of a day, but this one I read for myself. I love old photographs that show what life was like in a certain place and time, and this book gives me that same sort of joy. When I lived in Moscow I was fascinated with the apartments that had been divided and divided into multiple dwelling units, usually sharing the original kitchen and bathroom. This book shows the details of that change, including following the lives of the people who lived there through several generations.

So much to see in here, it would take hours to discover everything. Each page packs in a ton of information about life in a single Russian apartment unit. From its beginnings as a single family home through its use by up to six families, various artifacts and aspects of family and community life are highlighted. I would have loved to sit and figure out all the bits and pieces: the family tree in the front and the names of friends in the back just add to the richness of the story.

Bilingual elements, since all of the songs, poems, and the background illustrations are printed in Russian.

Nominally a children's book, this is both an illuminating introduction to twentieth-century Russian history and a powerful intergenerational epic. The extremely narrow spatial focus, presenting a hundred years of history through events occurring in a single Moscow apartment, allows for great breadth in other dimensions. A remarkable and unique book.

Wonderfully active delve into Russian history starting in 1902, all focused on life in one apartment and family, with search- and- find details throughout.

The research that went into this is amazing; i loved the geneaology/ real people aspect and all the clippings. (The writer and illustrator live in Russia.)

An excellent book to introduce Russian history to young kids and inspire conversations about family history, keepsakes, memories, sacrifice and survival. This would pair well with The Wall by Peter Sis, then A Night Divided y Jennifer Nielsen.
