She's the key to the kingdom. He's the kingdom's dark secret.
In the aftermath of a harrowing competition, the Kingdom of Eldoria sits on the brink of chaos. Ariella Mistaire, the feared Silver Wraith, and Prince Caspian, her unlikely ally, are determined to uncover the secrets behind her past and the weakening Accord. This shaky alliance leads them through parts of the realm that have been long forgotten, but hold many of the answers they seek. In their search for the truth, Valoria befalls political turmoil that results in catastrophic events never before seen in the realm. The delicate balance of essence that holds their world together teeters on the edge of collapse.
Ariella's possession of forbidden essence has marked her for greatness, but also for uncertainty. As she delves deeper into the secrets of the Accord, she unravels the mysteries of her past and the true power she possesses. Beside her, Caspian grapples with his own destiny, caught between loyalty to his father and the truths uncovered by the king's decrees. Together, they must navigate an unstable landscape of betrayal and deception as they seek to restore order and uncover the meaning behind the king's madness. Ariella and Caspian's bond is tested in ways the realm's most feared assassin could have never imagined.
In a world where essence flows through every living being and the balance of realms hangs by a mere thread, the Silver Wraith and the Prince must confront the demons in their lives to protect the future of Eldoria. But as secrets unfold and loyalties shift, they discover that the greatest threats may come from within, challenging everything they believe about power, fate, and the ties that bind them.
In the heart of a kingdom where darkness grows, Ariella and Caspian must rise above the shadows to accept their destinies and safeguard the essence of the thrones.
Dakota Monroe lives in a dark world and dreams of even darker fantasies. She has been a fantasy-obsessed reader since she was a child and now brings hers to life through her writing. As a neurodivergent woman, Dakota has always felt out of place with her thoughts and ideas; but books have been her savior, and a nonjudgmental place for her to escape the colorless world we call reality. She hopes her characters, and stories, provide an outlet for others, even if just for a little while.
I am so honored and excited to share the continuation of Ariella and Caspian’s stories. Essence of the Throne dives so much deeper into their world, magic, secrets, and problems. It’s full of growth, pain, love, betrayal, and far more questions than Ariella ever wanted to deal with.
Thank you for being a part of her and her prince’s journey. 🖤
This might just be better than the first, which is kind of difficult because Shadows of the Crown was in my top five for 2024.
It was one thing after another and really kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time you were reading. You could feel how high the stakes were. We got more in depth world building and more into the magic system as well.
I really loved that Ariella is starting to let Caspian in just a bit more. She's still really closed off from him and continually pushes him away, but there's moments where she lets in him 🥹. Poor Caspian, though. He comes back to her time after time no matter how hard she pushes because he just loves her stabby self.
There were definitely a few what the heck moments and like?? What was that about?? Need to know immediately. I have a few guesses but I want to devour book three to find out if I'm right. Also? There's a recap of book one at the beginning 😌.
This series just keeps getting better and better! I loved how strong Arielle, our FMC, and delightfully obsessed Caspian, our MMC, were in book one, Shadows of the Crown… but y’all! I believe I love book two more!
We begin right where we left off from book one, jumping right back into the fray after the deadly trials have commenced. With the revelations our MCs acquired in book one, Ariella now has a new mark and Caspian has a big decision. But all is not so simple when the world starts crumbling around them, the king continues to move against them, and strange humanoids are being discovered. What lies beneath the castle has no name but makes great sound…
I loved how in this book we get to see the hardened exterior of our fierce FMC begin to crack under the relentless and gentle hands of our MMC. Their relationship is blossoming into one of my most favorite romances and Caspian has easily and eagerly won my heart over. His feral golden retriever personality has me twisted in hapoy knots. I’m also SO EXCITED to see what might be lurking deeper within this two diabolical and delightful couple.
This sequel had everything I needed. Lots of action, banter, character growth, spice, and plot twists. I had such a good time and I’m so READY for book three!!
Tropes you may find in EOTT are forced proximity, unique magic structure, great world and character building, medium spice, touch him and die, burn 🔥 the world for her, morally grey characters, griffins, forbidden love, shadow powers, she’s the bodyguard, and political intrigue.
Essence comes out March 6, giving you PLENTY of time to read Shadows! Go now, friends!
Thank you for this gifted arc, Dakota. It has been such a joy to be an arc reader for this series!!
The story continues for the ruthless assassin and the prince as they navigate the aftermath of the events from the first book. Ariella’s character growth in this was phenomenal. Caspian and Ariella’s dynamic is so unique to what we typically see in the fantasy genre. She is the dominant and ruthless one who has trouble feeling emotions. I loved his patience with her and seeing how he helped her see herself as more than just the silver wraith. While Ariella’s story focuses on uncovering secrets of her past, understanding her essence, and coming to terms with her feelings— Caspian is torn over his loyalty to his father. I love their chemistry and the pull they have towards each other despite everything and everyone trying to pull them apart.
Book two is full of secrets and betrayal. The last 20% of this book was insane. I have so many questions and I am so excited for what’s to come in the next book.
“I want to break down those walls she's built, to see the woman beneath the mask. To be the safe harbor where she can let her guard down, even if just for a moment.”
“But they are in the past. You are my future, Ariella, and I don’t fucking care how much you fight or deny it. You’re mine. Every other woman in both realms is but a drop in the ocean compared to you.”
“He’s both my villain and my redemption. My destruction and its savior. The assassin, destroyed by the same prince she once drove her blade into.”
Genre: Romantacy ⭐️ 4/5 🌶2/5 🧠 5/10 (additional world building from book 1) Noteworthy: Book 2 in a series where book 1 must be read first. Book 3 has not been released yet. There is a recap for the story so far at the beginning which is really freaking nice!
I would say that I liked this book as a whole, equally as well as the first. The story continues right where book one left us hanging. It has nice action, excellent pacing, and great continued character development. We are still missing some pieces that should tie everything together. Hopefully, that happens in book 3.
I enjoyed the character growth so much. Caspian finally gets more of a backbone, not just for his dad but Ari too. He still has a little room to grow there, though. And Ari! Sis, way to let those feelings finally flow. Gosh, was it painful getting there. The girl was fighting for her life to stay insane.
I did have a pain point with this book in particular. At least a dozen times, a character would be pushing for info and just give up on it. They would be searching for clues or thinking through something and just tell themselves they either couldn't deal with it right now or it's a problem for a later date. Like, guys! Where is the follow through? A few times I get, but it was a lot. Once it happened twice on the same page for two different dilemmas. It was nice that they were smart and recognized problems and obvious clues to question. But the number of times they just dropped it was frustrating.
I really do like this series, though. So far, things I thought were potential plot holes have all actually been addressed just in later scenes. It's just really good so far!
I just really love this series! I genuinely feel so giddy reading about Ariella and Caspian. He’s so down bad for her, and I love to see it. Caspian never really wavered in his complete devotion to Ariella, and though it took her a bit to embrace her feelings, it seems she’s finally getting there. It makes me really excited for their relationship in the next book. They work so well together.
Ariella and Caspian were very much the focus of this book, so there weren’t a ton of side character storylines, but let me say this: much like Ariella, I’d like to punch the lights out of Gavriel. The man needs to be knocked down a few pegs.
I loved getting to see a bit more of the magic system in Essence of the Throne as well. The magic is so interesting to me, so getting to see the different ways it can be wielded is very cool. I think it’ll be interesting to see the way it changes after the events of this book though and how everyone adapts to the deteriorating Accord.
I’m so excited for the future of this series. I think Essence of the Throne has set up for some really cool plot lines for the next book, so I will be eagerly awaiting it.
Thank you Dakota Monroe for the early copy of Essence of the Throne! All opinions are my own!
Dakota has done it again.. seriously, her writing is amazing.. like I have no words for it.. She draws you in, and you just want to stay wrapped up in her stories.
I was so excited to continue with Ari and Caspiens' story. The way this book immediately lets you know what happened in SOTC so u aren't lost and then just get going into the story is amazing.. more authors should put a reminder in their second, third, etc. books. I truly appreciated that!
Ugh.. the tension between these 2 is chefs kiss.. the danger making it all so much hotter. I don't want to put any spoilers but FINALLY good riddance is all I can say.. iykyk.
Definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves fantasy with a kick ass strong FMC.. but I promise it will draw you in!! I can not wait for the next book!!
I LOVE Ariella. I want to be Ariella. Once again I was hooked right from the start of this book. Ariella’s such a strong, powerful (slightly unhinged) FMC, and I love her. Her and Caspian’s story is told so well in this series and I cannot wait for more.
This adult fantasy series has action, a revenge arc, spice, the morally grey FMC. I love it. Book two introduced even more depth to our main characters and their world. The ending has left me eagerly awaiting book 3!!!
SQUEEEEE!!! Not me giggling, smirking and squealing the entire time I read this book! I was so excited to continue reading about Ariella and Caspian’s journey! OMG so freaking good!!
Okay, I totally forgot about Capian’s fucking mouth…..like holy shit, I melted into the biggest puddle on the floor every time he spoke. 🥵🫠 I love how much he yearns for Ariella and how he will fall at her feet if she he asks it (but also throw her up against a wall when needed 😉)! So besides the amazing tension and chemistry between these two, I loved, loved, loved, how their relationship grew and how much they grew as characters in their own right, especially Ariella. Such a beautifully tortured soul! She has seriously become one of my favourite FMCs with all that strength and fire.
This series has me in an absolute chokehold! Dakota has an amazing way of writing that truly gets you lost in the world she builds on each page.
The tension! The banter! *chef's kiss* These are everything in this book! And Ariella's transformation? Absolutely astounding! We're also introduced to new locations within the realm, and there's an expansion on the magic and cultures of the realm, which really draws you into the world even more.
I really like that it's easy to jump into book 2 without feeling lost on what happened in book 1- the recap is a fantastic addition. I can't wait to see where this story goes!
This wasn't a bad book, but it fell a little flat for me.
It had so much character growth for Ariella, but I got very annoyed listening to her be in denial about her feelings for the entirety of the book. I understand reasons why she is that way, but it was a long time for me to read about it. Especially after the first book when it took so long to give in to their feelings.
That being said, Caspian was very patient with her and just so in love with her that he put up with all of it hoping for her to come to the realization in the end so he gets a gold star for MMCs.
There was so much magic potential in this series, but I feel like it's been wasted. I wanted more magic in the first book and I was hoping that there would be more happening in this one and it just didn't.
I do like a stabby FMC, but Ariella got a little ridiculous with it and it got old real quick.
I enjoyed the first book, but didn't love it and wanted to see if the second book came through. Unfortunately for me, it didn't.
Read if you love: -Obsessed MMCs -Feminine rage -Shadow Magic -Forbidden love -Character growth
Thank you to the author for the eARC of this book. My thoughts are entirely my own. Finish date: 2/9/25, Release date 3/6/25
I was obsessed with the first book, so it’s no surprise this is another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me. The magic system is so unique, but I wish it was built on and talked about more. I really enjoyed slowly seeing a new side of Ariella slowly. Definitely worth the read!!!
In the Kingdom of Eldoria, Ariella Mistaire, the feared Silver Wraith, holds the key to the realm's future—yet her mysterious past is shrouded in darkness. Prince Caspian, her reluctant ally, is bound by duty but torn by the secrets he uncovers about his father's reign. As political unrest rocks the kingdom, Ariella and Caspian embark on a dangerous journey to uncover the truth behind the fading Accord, a fragile balance that keeps their world from unraveling. Along the way, they confront betrayal, deception, and a power that could either save or doom Eldoria. Their bond is tested, and as the kingdom teeters on the brink of collapse, Ariella and Caspian must face their own demons and decide whether they can restore balance—or if they’ll be consumed by the very shadows they seek to destroy.
The book introduces new locations and settings, expanding the scope of the world even further. These travels offer a sense of culture and beliefs, magic, and the Accord throughout the realm. History around the Accord isn’t as it seems, and I enjoyed the mystery in solving not only ending the experiments by the King, but also fixing the Accord and saving the realm. This adds tension making every twist and turn feel urgent.
What stands out most in this book is the heightened depth given to its characters. Ariella, the fierce and enigmatic assassin, is painted in richer strokes. Her struggles are laid bare, and we get a gritty, unflinching look into the horrors of her life - complete with violence, gore, stress, and grotesque beings that she’s endures. This portrayal gives readers a clear understanding of why she’s built the emotional walls that she has, making her all the more complex and compelling.
The slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers relationship between Ariella and Caspian continues to evolve, and it's absolutely one of the most captivating aspects of the book. Their interactions crackle with tension, as Caspian continually pushes to break down her defenses while Ariella banters and physically fights him at every step. The use of dual POV is brilliant here, allowing us to peer into both of their minds and see their feelings - jealousy, vulnerability, and outright denial of the connection between them. Their dynamic is electric, and the emotional complexity between them adds layers to what is otherwise an already thrilling narrative.
Their romance is deliciously slow and hard-won, but what really takes this relationship to another level are the intense, magic-infused spice scenes. These moments, though few, are charged with undeniable chemistry and fiery energy. Some scenes are completely open-door, detailed, and bold, while others maintain an element of subtlety, leaving just enough to the imagination.
Overall, Essence of the Throne intensifies everything that made the first book so captivating - world-building, character depth, sexual tension - and introduces new elements that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Whether you're here for the slow-burn romance, the action-packed fight scenes, or the unraveling mysteries, this book delivers in spades. Highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy, slow-burn romances, and stories filled with magic, mystery, and rich world-building.
Series: Essence of the Throne || Shadows of the Crown Book #2 by Dakota Monroe ⭐️4.5 || 🌶️2 || 🗣️Dual POV, 1st Person
Read this if you like: Touch Him and Die MMC with Golden Retriever Energy She’s a Former Assassin, Now His Bodyguard Prince + Bodyguard Reverse Grumpy X Sunshine Realms in Peril Morally Grey FMC Her: * is stabby* Him: 😍 Chosen Ones Unique Magic System Vengeance Secrets and Betrayal (not by main characters) ‘We’re in this together’ Forbidden Love But He Literally Does Not Care Reluctant Heroine
I’m bestowing this with the award of “Better Than Book 1🏆” which is rare and coveted for a second book. Dakota took what was already a great plot and expanded it into something far greater, like zooming in on a map to find so many hidden details to explore. In EOTT, we see Ariella complete her mission for vengeance, however in the meantime she and Caspian discover bigger issues involving the balance of the magic in the realm that is literally tearing it apart at the seams. Dakota’s world-building in this instance is absolutely fantastic and I cannot wait to see more in the next book.
I loved Ariella’s growth and seeing her emotional range expand from spite and survival mode as she slowly lets her guard down for Caspian, and her inner dialogue as she notices it happening made me giggle. Her POV contrasts in the best way with Caspian’s. The dual POV is wielded in the best way showing their different emotional ranges and personalities - Ariella: *Caspian does something endearing that likely gives her butterflies* “What’s that about?” ~Versus~ Caspian: *Ariella breathes in his direction* “I will tear my heart from my chest and deliver it to her on a silver platter”
Speaking of Caspian. Cas baby. Our gentle, silently strong, lowkey feminist prince. He is so patient with her while she navigates her newfound feelings while also trying to save the realm. They are best summed up by that gif of Pedro Pascal and Nic Cage in that convertible car, and Caspian is Pedro. You know what I’m talking about.
Anywho he is just down bad for her and isn’t afraid to claim her regardless of everyone’s judgement. The man has serious puppy dog eyes for her and I am here for it. I love the way he supports her and lets her be her baddie self like 'I’m here if you need me but you got this boo.' We all need a Caspian in our lives, rooting for us while we slay our demons.
I cannot wait to see what is in store for us in book 3 now that Ariella has taken off her villain mask and put on her hero hat. Although she will still happily be the villain if it means protecting those she cares about.
🗣️ “You are so much more than the sum of what you’ve done to survive”… You are exactly who you need to be; how you were forced to get here does not make you less worthy of the woman you’ve become.”
🗣️ He looks murderous. What an inconvenient time to be aroused.
🗣️ But then there’s Ariella. She paces before me like a caged beast, all lethal grace and simmering fury. My breath catches. Even in her rage - or perhaps because of it - she’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
🗣️ “You can either live alongside the darkest parts of you, or you can let them destroy that fire inside until you’re nothing but a shell.”
🗣️ She’s unpredictable, volatile, and yet, I’ve never seen anything so beautiful…and my soul wants nothing more than to protect her, regardless that she’ll never need it. Well, physical protection, that is. Her heart? I’ll keep it safe until she’s ready to care for it on her own. And even then, I’ll be here, prepared to hold on to it when she cannot.
This book starts off right where Shadows of the Crown ended, with a little summary at the beginning to remind us readers what happened previously, which was so nice. I think all authors should include this in future books in a series.
I loved that this book dove deeper into the world building, it intrigued me so much and has me thinking about all the little details sprinkled throughout. There is so much backstory and history that was beautifully written into the ongoing current storyline that even the slower parts of the book are important and kept my attention. While Ariella carries out her mission of vengeance, her character grows in so many ways. I absolutely loved watching her open up and show us more that just the angry assassin we have already come to love. Her inner dialogue was a highlight through this self discovery of "other" feelings. I really appreciated the Dual POV in this book specifically because we got to explore more of Cas & Ari's relationship from their perspectives, which helped me fall more in love with their dynamic.🥰
Then we have the ever lovable prince Caspian, his unwavering support and admiration for all parts of Ariella is something swoon worthy. He is so gentle and patient throughout this book while Ariella navigates her growth. He is her personal cheerleader and I love that so much!! We all want someone to love us for all that we are like Prince Cas.😍 I love their banter and devotion to one another despite all the secrets they uncover and the forbidden aspect of their love. Everything and everyone is against them, will they beat the odds? I cannot wait to see how the story continues in book 3!!
Fave Quotes:
"I need to move away from him— the hunger and tension emanating from him are pure torture to my traitorous body."
"“Since when has danger ever stopped the illustrious Silver Wraith?” Since you became more important to me than anything else."
"The intensity in her gaze enough to make most men fall to their knees weeping. And I’ll gladly be one of them if that’s how she wishes to be worshiped."
"You are my future, Ariella, and I don’t fucking care how much you fight or deny it. You’re mine. Every other woman in both realms is but a drop in the ocean compared to you.”
“I don’t know what you’ve done to me, angel. I shouldn’t be painfully hard from your threatening aura… and yet here I am.”
"Essence of the Throne" is a riveting continuation of "Shadows of the Crown." I'm especially grateful that the author included a summary of the first book. With no time wasted, EOTT plunges us straight into the action. Arielle finds herself with a new target, while Caspian grapples with crucial decisions brought on by revelations from the previous book. As the story progresses, everything around them begins to unravel, presenting fresh obstacles that only intensify their journey.
This installment takes us to enthralling new locations and introduces us to diverse magic systems and cultures, all of which aim to uncover more about the enigmatic Accord.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is witnessing Arielle's transformation. She starts to shed her tough, brittle exterior and slowly begins to acknowledge her feelings for Caspian, despite her constant resistance. Arielle is undeniably tough and unyielding, often numbing her emotions. However, her character development shines through, and we delve deeper into her backstory, revealing the reasons behind her emotional walls.
Caspian, utterly smitten with her, is unwavering in his patience. He gently pushes her to recognize her worth and the importance of vulnerability, never overstepping to the point of breaking her. His internal struggle between doing what he knows is right and his loyalty to his father adds further complexity to his character.
Their chemistry is nothing short of epic—their banter is delightful and often has me giggling. The way they fight to stay together despite the odds is incredibly compelling. Their romantic moments are charged with fiery chemistry and undeniable passion.
While I adored the first book, "Essence of the Throne" amplifies everything that made "Shadows of the Crown" great. The world-building is masterful, character growth profound, and the sexual tension palpable. The plot is peppered with twists and turns that keep you engaged, blending romance, spice, action, secrets, betrayal, and mysteries seamlessly. What’s not to love? I'm eagerly awaiting Book 3, bursting with questions and anticipation.
I have been waiting for Essence of the Throne since finishing Shadows of the Crown. Dakota has become one of my favorite authors and I can really see the growth in her writing in this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed Ariella and Caspian’s relationship here. There was so much tension and banter, but there was also some very sweet moments that I wasn’t expecting to see. Caspian is such a support for Ariella and I think that really helped her growth throughout this story. There were a couple times I wanted to strangle her and tell her to just give in, but I completely understand why she fights so hard to stay away from her feelings for him. Especially after some of the hints that were dropped in here… I have a theory on what that means, so I think that will really explain both their behaviors. I just really want to know if I’m right!
As far as individual characters, I felt like Ariella was more ruthless in this book than the last one. She definitely has a reason to be, though some of her behavior seemed impulsive and almost erratic. Again, I think this has to do with my theory, but I’ll leave it at that. For Caspian, I grew to love him in this book. He became so much more than a prince who wants Ariella. I loved their growth by the end of the book.
For the magic, we saw so much more of it this book which was wonderful. It didn’t feel overdone or confusing and there’s one particular scene that it was used that had me blushing. Also, I NEED answers for that scene…
I loved Shadows of the Crown, but Essence of the Throne has topped that. One of my top for 2025 for sure.
Thank you to the author for an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
* I consider slitting his throat for asking me to give up one of my tarts, but surprisingly, that thought is just a fleeting thing before I give in. * “You can either live alongside the darkest parts of you, or you can let them destroy that fire inside until you’re nothing but a shell.” * I get the sense that it would be so freeing to just dive into the water and allow it to carry my body wherever it sees fit. It’s only now that I realize that I want to let go. I need something—or someone—to take control of my body so that I may exist without the weight of everyone else’s decisions for once in my fucking life. * Your strength, your skills—they are a reflection of the life you’ve endured, of the battles you’ve fought to survive. They were born from necessity, shaped by a realm that demanded them of you. But they are not who you are. You are so much more than the sum of what you’ve done to survive.”
Dakota did it again. Just like book one, the FMC was a total bad a**. Shadows of the Crown left me with my jaw open asking so many questions! Essence of the Throne on the other hand answered so many and left me with my heart warm and ready for book three! So many new characters that I hope I get to see in the future. I absolutely LALALALOVED it! That freakin ending had me at the edge of my seat turning pages like I was on 200X on an audiobook. Phew what an amazing series.

This is a fantastic sequel to Shadows of the Crown. BIG things are happening!
Here are snippets of my thoughts because I'm trying really hard to avoid spoilers and this seems like the only way I can!
💙Among the revelations, new questions are raised.
🖤Essence of the Throne is the literary equivalent to a fantasy disaster movie at times. These moments are action-packed and incredibly exciting.
💙There are moments of raw emotion that will have tears streaming down your face. I warned you!
🖤Ariella continues to be the no nonsense, bad@ss b*tch that I adore. I loved seeing her growth in this book and the progression of her and Caspian's relationship.
🖤Caspian has some things to say and I love every word that comes out of his mouth. He's the perfect mix of gentle and assertive. 😏
💙The ending of this book perfectly sets up the next one. I'm very excited about where this story is taking us!
I love this series and these characters so much! I'm very much looking forward to the next book! I. Want. More!!!
I received a copy of this book from the author and am honored to share this completely honest review!
Okay guys, The Shadows the Crown (book 1) was one of my tops reads to start this year, and book 2 did not disappoint! I really liked this book and am loving the series. It’s so fast-paced in the best way!
This book was filled with action right from the start! The first chapter alone had my gasping and captured my attention. The king’s experiments, the chaos that the realm falls into, the breadcrumbs that are dropped throughout the story, and the spice kept me turning page after page.
I loved that we got to see our hardened FMC’s shell start to crack and let Caspian in more. And bless his heart for continuing to come back no matter how hard she tried to push him away. I am very excited to read more about how their fates are tied together and get answers to the many breadcrumbs that were dropped relating to them and their essence!
I loved that we got to see more of Ariella’s essence in this book too, especially that final scene with the King 👀
Monroe hints at soooo many things to be revealed and to come in the third book that I am dying to get my hands on it! The Accord, the artifacts, the aetary connection, the griffin, Caspian’s changes, all of it I just want answers!!
If you love a Manorian FMC/MMC relationship vibe, lots of action, clap-back banter, and a morally grey FMC, you’ll eat this read up!
Have you ever been reading a book, noticed that it's going to quickly and panicked? That was me with this book. I kept checking my percentage read because I never wanted it to end!
First off, I love how Ariella was still out here pretending like she wasn't into Caspien for part of this book. Their push and pull with each other, while you just want to smoosh their faces together and say *kiss*, is oddly satisfying.
Ariella doesn't ever pretend to be something that she's not, but we get to see a different side of her as she is experiencing her own uncomfortable growth. Just like Caspien, I love seeing her vulnerable side.
Caspien is perfect, I have no notes. He is forward, he is open with what he wants, and if he's feeling vulnerable....he shares it. He is exactly who you want balancing out our emotionally stunted assassin.
Now let's touch on the storyline. Ohhhhhh we are getting complicated here and I LOVE it! The complexity of this world is growing and there are so many layers that I cannot wait to unravel in the upcoming books.
Dakota Monroe did it again. She created a dynamic, high stakes world with a fascinating magic system, and a love story that leaves you swooning.
“I want you to apologize for how fucking badly I need you when I have done everything to reject this.”
Do you ever meet a character that just calls to you- for me that’s Ariella.
I fell for her instantly in Shadows of the Crown and have been counting down the days until we carried on her journey in Essence of the Throne.
Brutal, efficient, unyielding, raised with one purpose to destroy the King and all he stands for.
Yet, I loved that despite the adversity she’s suffered, she has a quiet vulnerability that somehow resonates so deep. My heart almost ached for her at times, I loved her character growth and her banter and push and pull with Caspian
And Caspian, yes please, I never thought I’d grow to love him so much. His quiet strength and unwavering loyalty to her.
Essence of the Throne fast paced, action packed and such a good follow up to Shadows of the Crown. I can’t share much more without spoiling the surprises but what a great ending and I can’t wait until book 3.
If you like: - Fast action - High stakes - hidden powers - Assassin x Prince - He falls first - Touch him and 💀.
If you haven’t started this series yet - what are you waiting for!
Thank you so much Dakota Monroe for giving me the chance to arc read this amazing series !
Great second book in the Shadows of the Crown series. Continues to follow Ariella Mistaire, the feared Silver Wraith, and her unlikely ally, Prince Caspian.
There was once again a lot happening, including great world building and this book also delved deeper into the magic system, the essence, and how it works.
I really enjoyed learning more about Caspian as a character. Ariella continued to be a strong and fierce FMC, and I loved how she started to trust Caspian and let him in a bit more. The relationship development between them was great, and they definitely have chemistry!
Loved having the recap of book 1 at the beginning. And the character art throughout the book was beautiful.
I have so many questions, and I can’t wait to read book 3!
“I will be his undoing and gladly introduce my blade to any who thinks they can stop me.” “The prince won’t save you. Actually, look in his direction again and I will rip your throat out with my teeth and fuck him in your blood.” “Let’s just say I have a vested interest in keeping you alive. Besides, you’re far too beautiful to lose so soon.” “Are you always so difficult to work with? Or am I just special?”
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
Well we knew the king was up to something. So it's been kind of cool to see what he's up to, albeit terrifying.
I love the tension you feel between Caspian and Ariella.
The first bedroom scene was so intense. I liked that we could see her confusion at some moments and that when something felt odd, it wasn't just odd to the reader it was odd to Ariella and Caspian as well.
I love reading from Caspian's POV. Seeing how much he cares about Ariella. What he tries to do to help break down her walls. It's wonderful to see how his love grows.
Ariella fighting her own feelings is so frustrating. We know how she feels, but she refuses to acknowledge it. This slow burn of feelings is rough, but amazing! They've had physical connections, but the romantic connection of their feelings is so slow going.
The spicy scenes are so good! I can't explain how great they are.
I like that it feels like fate is guiding them.
I also enjoy the expansion on the world building of the series. We're getting answers to some of the questions we had raised in the first book.
I loved how we build up to everything. It was a bit slow at first and then the end was a rush of craziness, but in a good way. I'm pumped for the next book!

🔖What you gonna find: ⏳Forbidden love ⏳Ancient secrets ⏳Reluctant hero ⏳Political intrigue ⏳Female rage ⏳Forbidden magic ⏳Chosen One ⏳Touch him and die.
After waiting with hand on my heart since "Shadow of the Crown", I knew I had to dive into this world of Aurelia and Caspian. Ariella, the assassin, the alpha female deserves all the love. She's my favorite character. The amount of rage and hurt she bundles in her heart is debilitating, yet her strong side is to die for.
Caspian is the Prince direly in love with the assassin, the sole person to see beyond the wall she's created and only living entity to survive after disregarding her.
The world building is absolutely phenomenal, surpassing political plots, forbidden magic and ancient secrets. The writing is flamboyant, commiserating her struggles with the unique magic system leaving you baffled.
The banter between them is soul feeling delicious and the growth of Ariella is a journey perilous yet daunting. The plot twist was just pure consternation with thrill pulsing within your blood. A masterpiece indeed left on with more questions and secrets yet to be revealed.
If you are a fan of strong female leads with progressing world building and a Prince ready to kneel, this is your drink, Gulp it or savor it,your choice!!
Shadows of the Crown was one of favorite fantasy reads from last year and I have been patiently waiting for this book since then! Dakota did not disappoint.
This story is truly a piece of fantasy art. The intricate details that create this story, the evolution of the characters and their journeys, it’s all so fascinating! I’m in awe of how her brain works.
Ariella is this overly strong, fierce warrior that struggles at knowing or leaning into her feminine energies, which makes her incredible as the Silver Wraith, but a nightmare in a relationship lol. I will say though Dakota did a wonderful job with this characteristic because it never became annoying. You could see the battle within herself that became aware of even having this femininity within her but being terrified to trust it.
Caspian was just plain adorable and the perfect balance for Arielle. He helped ground her and teach her lessons that allowed her to make better choices. He was wise but also humorous and full of life. I also love that he was not afraid to say Arielle was his and to shut down anyone who tried to interfere! 🥵
The level of detail from the art, to the story weaving was brilliant and it was an honor to read this!
“Living doesn’t mean erasing the pain so that you never have to deal with it; it means finding a way to keep moving despite all the scars and unhealed parts of us.”
I was extremely fortunate enough to receive Shadows of the Crown as an ARC last year and it was one of my Top 10 favorites of 2024. That being said, I had high hopes for book 2 and OMG it blew my expectations completely out of the water!
The recap at the beginning was refreshing, and I liked that it was written from the FMC’s POV. The action throughout the book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I loved seeing all the little puzzle pieces start coming together. The banter between the FMC and MMC had me giggling, and the spice was SPICING.🫠 Their push and pull kept me begging for more!
Throughout the series, the FMC doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what she is, but I loved that we got to see a whole new side of her & evolving that character growth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.
If you haven’t read Shadows of the Crown, I’m begging you to, and I promise that you’ll fall in love with it like I have.♥️
Thank you Dakota for allowing me to review EOTT! It’s been an absolute honor to be an ARC reader for this series.🫶🏼
Essence of the Throne is book 2 in the Shadows of the Crown series. When I thought Shadows of the Crown was intense, I didn't have a clue what was waiting for me in book 2. This is the perfect continuation of the story we started unraveling in book 1, and I definitely couldn't put it down for a minute.
Ariella and Caspian have the most beautiful development as individuals and as a couple. I wanted to hit Ariella in the head with my Kindle because she kept denying her true feelings, but something stronger is going on between them that has me suspecting a couple of theories that I won't tell so I don't spoil anything.
I loved that we got to know more about their world and also more details about their magic, which I still find so original and different from other stories with similar magic systems. This was a really great read, with lots of tension and character growth that I truly appreciated.
I'm super grateful for being a part of the ARC team of Dakota Monroe, I can't wait to read the rest of your work!
Truly, truly, truly cannot stress enough how much of a phenomenal writer Dakota is. There will not be a single day where I will say otherwise or a single book that could convince me she isn't.
Essence of the Throne starts right where Shadows of the Crown ends and I really do recommend you read SOTC before diving into this one. I feel as if this book was actually better than the first. In the first book, you have to get to know Ariella and her situations and now in this second book, we're right in the midst of the drama. And Caspian?? Oh gods, what a man! What a PRINCE!! Need I say further?? Honestly, this book took me through a rollercoaster of emotions and when I finally turned the page and saw "Author Note"??? I GASPED!!
In conclusion, read the book. In order. Cry. Scream. Laugh. Finish. And then come back and tell us all about it. I am so grateful to be apart of Dakota's street team. She truly has me hooked all the time.
