This historical romance novel grips the reader from the first page to the last. The Duke of Silverton, a man of ruthless ambition, is determined to recover a debt, leading him to encounter his best friend's sister, Madeline. Devastated by the disappearance of her husband, Madeline joins the Duke's quest for answers. When her husband is found dead, the new Earl casts her out, leaving her destitute. To protect her, the Duke proposes a marriage of convenience.
Despite their forced union, the tension between them remains palpable. The Duke harbors secrets, and grapples with the revelation that her previous marriage was never consummated. His hidden secrets complicates their already precarious relationship.
The novel masterfully blends historical intrigue with a simmering romance. The search for the missing husband unfolds with suspense, while the developing attraction between Madeline and the Duke adds a layer of forbidden desire. The characters are well-developed, and the author skillfully crafts a world that is both captivating and believable.
I enjoyed this steamy story. Duke Alexander was a Duke trying to hide his business connections to a gambling den. Lady Madeleine was trapped in a loveless marriage to an Earl, Donald Clueet. He owed many people money but he was mostly in debt to Alexander. Donald disappeared and was assumed to be dead. His brother appeared and took over the title and estate, threatening Madeleine as well. Alexander wanted to save Madeleine from the situation. How could a Duke save Madeleine when his business depended on his reputation? What actions could he take to save Madeleine and his business. The story details gambling, fraud, deception, murder and attempted murder. I liked the way Alexander was so protective of Madeleine but at times he was frustrating because he hid the truth. It is an enjoyable, well-written story..
This is a wonderful story of two people brought together because someone in their family was or is addicted to gambling and ruined due to debts they cannot pay. Madeleine has not seen her husband I several days and is confronted by a debt collector from a gambling hell to collect on her missing husbands debt. Alexander is the duke of Silverton who is the owner of the gambling hell but no one is aware he is the true owner. He sets out to collect outstanding debts when he runs meets Madeleine and together the begin searching for her missing husband only to be found dead. To protect Madeleine he marries her but they have to endure ton gossip but the both discover that they are stronger together and Alexander finds he will do anything to protect the women he has come to care for.
I found this story to be the best of the series so far. Both the Duke and Duchess were strong characters and clearly perfect for each other. I really appreciated that there was no “marriage of convenience” talk and that from the beginning the Duke was protective of his Duchess. W couple of times I did roll my eyes about how sensitive she was and I really really hate quick to forgive she was at the end. He should have had to work harder to get her back. Overall it was a very good story and I can see the author writing more in this series. The spicy scenes were great!! Well worth the read.
Too predictable, it was too close to another book…….
This storyline was so similar to another book that I have read that I started to question if I was reading a new book. It is a marriage of convenience for the Duke’s best friend’s widowed sister. Even the scene of the brother’s return from war was the same. It made the story quite predictable. There were subtle differences in some details, but the book was too long and certain issues dragged on too long. For me the storyline lacked originality, but I did like the main couple together so I gave 3 stars.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review.
Alexander and Madeleine had a wonderful relationship, loving and giving. It very nearly all went wrong but thankfully Alexander woke up in time. A lovely epilogue and all is well with the world. I wish life was really like that! I suppose I have been extremely lucky in my own family, aside from my son not being as well as I would like and my mum being gone! However this story was lovely and I liked that Madeleine was strong throughout, instead of the usual washout that we read about. Well done.
I enjoyed the story.. A Lady whose husband wasn't interested in her gambled, slept around, and disappeared. The Gambling Hell he owed money to sough him out for payment of his debts. A Duke secretly owns the Hell and arrived at his house, trying to intimidate the wife to find her husband. Duke believes she is lying and continues to search, but finds the wife is on his mind. They try to find the husband together, husband ends up dead, Duke marries the lady to protect her. Their relationship develops, later the 1st husband 'returns from the dead.
The characters in this story had had many challenges in life, losing their mothers in death and their fathers to gambling when they were children. Madeleine 's arranged marriage followed a similar path before it brought Alexander into her life. They struggled with issues of trust and honesty when they entered into an arranged marriage. However, all was not as it appeared and they had to overcome challenges before finding their HEA. A very good read.
An arranged marriage, a neglected bride and more. Duke Alexander searches for Lady Madeline's indebted husband and encounters the bride looking for the husband that abandoned her. When the scoundrel turns up deceased, Madeline finds herself married once again to a man she barely knows. Will it be different this time? I enjoyed this regency romance a great deal. Ava MacAdams spins her craft yet again with great characters and plot, a book that made the pages turn. Well worth reading.
A husband up to no good-ever & up to his ears with owing many. And then he is seemingly gone & his wife finds herself 3 days to leave.. And then a wedding to the Duke & slowly trust merges between them but secrets come into play & then the real work begins…
Arranged marriages were very much a thing but not usually very successful or loving as was the case here too. With many twists and turns and incidences this story commences with its characters and especially its strong heroine. If you like overcoming troubles and a bit of danger then enjoy!
This book is full of mystery from the disappearance of Madeleine first husband to who is out destroy Alexander gambling club and yet in protecting her they manage to fall in love and solve the mysteries
Wow! Madeline had it tough. She sat at home without her husband night after night. Suddenly she had the urge to find him. Determination, strength and courage took her far. A great story
This story has a lot going on for it. A missing husband, suspects, deception, romance, dysfunctional families, a handsome savior, secrets and romance. The only thing I felt it has too much of was the graphic sex scenes.
This story to be the best of the series so far. Both the Alexander and Madeleine were strong characters and clearly perfect for each other. It had it all, love, laughter, heartbreak, mystery and the inevitable fight at the end. A great story and well written.
What a wonderful read. Madeline and Alexander are great characters with intriguing lives. The storyline is different which I always find appealing. Definitely recommend this book.
