How Are You Functioning?: A Holistic Approach to Life

Rate this book
I spent over half of my life working in the behavioral health field. I have had the unique privilege to have provided care in inpatient and outpatient facilities, correctional institutions and residential centers. I have worked with those suffering from debilitating depression and anxiety, addictions, grief, and post-traumatic disorders, to identify only a few. Most of my clients would not be classified as "mentally ill". They most typically suffer from maladies of life. Life is hard. Life is suffering. A life lived in dysfunction is at best miserable and at worst an approximation of Hell. This work is the culmination of over 34 years helping people optimize functioning in their lives. For most of my clients, once they optimize their functioning they see no real need for continued therapy.

I will warn you up front, I am very direct and blunt. It is a style of therapy developed over years of practice. Please know that what I am sharing with you is has been effective in changing the lives of many; but sometimes the truth hurts. What I share with your is genuinely out of true care and concern. It is not intended to hurt you but to help you.

Over the course of my career I have been blessed with a great many mentors. Men and women who have shared their collective wisdom with me and I have, to the best of my ability, tried to incorporate that wisdom. However, some of these individuals, while wise, may not have been the most eloquent. The first piece of this wisdom is that each of us must deal with our situation as it is in reality; not how we wish it would be, not how we hoped it would be. Life can be life a pool full of shit and if you find yourself in the deep end of that pool concern for how you got there or who pushed you in is of little service. You have to get yourself out of the pool before you drown. You have to get yourself cleaned up. For most this is sufficient to move forward. For others, deeper psychotherapy is needed to insure they don't find themselves back in the pool. This book is designed to help you get out of the pool.

How are you really functioning? This isn't a simple question, and the answer isn't always straightforward. We often operate on autopilot, reacting to life's demands rather than actively shaping our experiences. This book is your invitation to pause, reflect, and take a proactive role in cultivating a life of holistic well-being. We'll explore five key physical health, social relationships, education and career, finances, and spiritual well-being. These aren't isolated components; they are intricately interwoven, influencing and shaping one another. Neglecting one area inevitably impacts the others, creating imbalances that can manifest in stress, burnout, and a general sense of dissatisfaction. The principles outlined in this book are not based on fleeting trends or quick fixes. Instead, they are rooted in established psychological models, providing a deeper understanding of the processes involved in achieving lasting personal growth. We will delve into theories like the Theory of Planned Behavior (regarding health choices), Attachment Theory (relating to relationships), and self-efficacy models (concerning career success), offering clear, actionable strategies supported by scientific research. This is not about striving for unrealistic perfection but about building a foundation of self-awareness, setting realistic goals, and fostering a compassionate approach to personal growth. Your journey is unique, and this book is your personalized guide. Let's embark on this transformative journey together, fostering a holistic approach that empowers you to create a life of meaning, purpose, and lasting well-being. Prepare to rediscover your potential, and redefine what it means to truly thrive.
