The BRAND NEW atmospheric, feel-good romantic read from bestselling author Lisa Hobman 💫🏴 Must-read for fans of Jessica Redland, Julie Shackman and Eliza J. Scott! What would you wish for if you had one chance?
Esme Cassidy had two dreams growing to be a famous film star, and to own Drumblair Castle.
Sadly, overly cautious parents put paid to a career in front of the camera, instead encouraging her to study towards a ‘proper job’, and Lady Olivia MacBain is the current custodian of ‘her castle’.
After graduating and a year travelling, Esme returns home broken-hearted and throws herself into her new role as Lady Olivia’s PA at Drumblair Castle. It’s not quite her original dream but at least she’s living at the castle in one of the estate cottages with her housemate and friend, handsome, yet quirky, groundsman Judd.
With the news that the castle will be used as a film set for a period movie, Esme gets to witness first-hand the career she missed out on. And with her teenage crush in the starring role, she can’t believe her luck. But he wouldn’t be interested in a girl like her, surely?
Perfect for the fans of Alison Sherlock, Jessica Redland and Fay Keenan
Shooting Stars over the Highlands is an absolute delight from start to finish! This uplifting, feel-good read swept me away with its heartwarming story of hope, love, and second chances, making this the perfect escapist read for anyone in need of a little sunshine. ☀️
The Scottish Highlands setting is utterly enchanting, and Esme and Judd's relationship brought such warmth to the story. Betty, the adorable dog, completely stole my heart – because, let’s be honest, every book is better with a dog! 🐕
Lisa Hobman’s writing beautifully balances humour, romance, and a touch of nostalgia, leaving me with a huge smile on my face. This book truly brightened my day, and I was hooked from the very first page. I adored every moment and couldn’t put it down!
It’s a five-star must-read for anyone who loves uplifting contemporary romance. I’ll definitely be diving into this author’s backlist – I can’t wait to read everything she’s written!
I received a free copy of, Shooting Stars over the Highlands, by Lisa Hobman, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Esme Cassidy has always wanted to be an actress, but her parents would not let her, her other dream was to own Drumblair Castle. Esme gets a job at Drumblair Castle, and their are rumors a show might be filmed their. Maybe Esme dreams will come true. This was a good read.
Hollywood has come to Drumblair Castle for a period movie as it is the perfect set. It sees Olivia and her team accommodate this large team yet, it’s a minor inconvenience for it brings the opportunity for Olivia to financially invest further into the castle, as well as a chance for her PA, Esme, to get closer to the film-star career she wished she had had.
I enjoyed this book of the series, seeing how the castle is being used for something completely different. Olivia is continuing to expand Drumblair’s horizons but this does not dominate the narrative as much, nor does her own family affairs. Instead, it is Esme, her romantic background, her family and her lost dreams that drive this story forwards and this made for a rather refreshing read. Admittedly, I did miss the meddling Kerr but I think this would have made the book repetitive of previous ones in the series.
For Esme, the presence of Hollywood brings back memories of her own opportunities to follow an acting career. It reminds Esme of what she turned down, as well as her time in Australia. I liked how Hobman included Esme’s past in such a way that meant is shaped some of Esme actions in the rest of the story. Furthermore, the contrast she recognises between Zach and her own am dram work encouraged me to sympathise with Esme, particularly as she begins to feel wistful of not pursuing acting.
The supporting characters in Esme’s story were likeable and I enjoyed the unpredictability of Lucille’s character. There is romance in the story with potential suitors of Zach and Judd. Yet, they are complete opposites and I was curious to see how Esme would handle a love interest: not only are they from different worlds, one is a childhood crush whilst the other is her housemate. Judd’s character was especially interesting and I thought his behaviours to be sweet, understanding and very supportive towards Esme.
A lovely story about how dreams can come true in their own way, I liked seeing Esme’s journey and how Drumblair Castle is once again giving fresh opportunities to those who work on Olivia’s team.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another lovely book from Lisa which is set in Scotland. It was an easy, relaxing read and I enjoyed reading about all the characters. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Pretty cute and mostly upbeat cozy story. Not really a lot of romance, includes some heart break too. I’ve enjoyed the characters from this series so far. The writing is easy to digest and the story moves at a good pace. Good for relaxing with tea.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series and it is always good to see how life is panning out for the inhabitants of the castle. Esme is the newcomer who is newly employed as Olivia's PA. You soon realise that she has got unfulfilled ambitions and a deep yearning to act and to perform. Her parents, particularly her mother, have encouraged her to out aside those ambitions and to find herself a 'safe' job. Living back at home following a heartbreaking end of a relationship, Esme finds herself feeling stifled and infantilized at home and looks to move out of her childhood home, to assert her independence.
There is quite a cast of characters who bring some humour and colour to life in the village. Both professional and amateur actors are rehearsing their productions and Esme finds herself involved with both. There is a gentle romance which runs through the story as Esme seems to have a range of choices available to her.
Shooting Stars over the Highlands is a truly cozy and magical read. ✨ The setting is beautifully described, making the Scottish Highlands and the grand castle feel immersive and enchanting. 🏰 The story unfolds naturally, keeping just enough mystery without giving everything away too soon. Esme’s journey—balancing past heartbreak, family dynamics, and an unexpected reunion with her teenage crush—adds depth while keeping things light and heartwarming. ❤️
The character connections feel genuine, and the romance is sweet, making this a lovely escape. While it’s not a top favorite, it’s still a wonderful read that delivers comfort, charm, and a touch of magic. If you love atmospheric, feel-good romances, this one is worth picking up! 💫
I just love Lisa's writing style and characters! I was a little late reading this one, but still enjoyed it from start to end. I really loved being back at the castle and indirectly seeing how Lady Olivia is getting on as this story focuses on her PA, Esme. Esme was lovely and so was her best friend and their dogs and her relationship with her parents also touched me.
There was enough romance, but closed door, to warm my heart.
Feel good fiction, light hearted and easy going reading.
The story follows Esme Cassidy whose dealing with a trifector of problems; a sudden rough breakup, the necessary moving back in with the parents and undergoing a bit of a career crisis in terms of what she thinks she wants (aftjng hopes and dreams) and what she believes to be realistic (anything but acting).
Then turns up a role as PA to Lady Olivia at Drumblair Castle, where she eventually finds a cottage to live and be independent and an am dram group to live out her acting ambitions.
The cottage, rather fortuitously, already has a tenant. Meet Judd, a good looking and really rather decent guy, groundskeeper for the castle estate and who seems to have taken to Esme immediately. And it's while Esme is still reeling from, and dealing with, her horrible break up that we see Judd shine as the considerate and bolstering support Esme is need of.
Then things get glamorous. Hollywood comes to Drumblair and a film begins to be shot in its confines. This bring loads 2 key characters, the handsome and picture perfect Zach (who also happens to be Esme's teenage crush!) and his leading goddess come actress Lucille - the films leads. The former takes to Esme, the latter most certainly doesn't. This begins a difficult series of 4 way miscommunications and deliberate misdirections.
These 4 main characters each have their own little bit of trouble before things slowly work themselves out. I loved the use of flowers to describe feelings which can be hard to say out loud. The story moved along nicely and, although arguably predictable in its ending, was thoroughly enjoyable to read. The supporting characters, and storylines, of Parker and Esme's parents helped fill out the story.
This is the first novel by this author I've read, and going on this book I'd definitely read another. If you're looking for a good light hearted holiday read, or just something to escape into of an evening I think this fits the bill. It's no thought-provoking drama or Penguin classic, but it's easy to pick up and get lost in if getting away from it all is what you're after.
Lisa Hobman takes readers back to the Scottish Highlands for another story at Drumblair Castle, liberally sprinkled with humor and heart. It's been fun getting to know these characters, catching up with favorites in each new book while meeting new ones along the way.
Esme is such a relatable and engaging character. I enjoyed the way her story unfolded as she moved forward on her journey to independence, both in her personal and professional lives. Her relationships with her parents, Lady Olivia, Judd, her teenage crush all grown up, and her ex all unfolded in an organic and realistic way that only deepened my emotional attachment to her. I was in her corner, cheering her on the entire way.
I adored sweet, supportive Judd but I also liked Zach immensely as well. For a while, I wasn't sure which way the author was going to take Esme romantically but I was very happy with the way it played out. I really appreciated the way both of the men's characters evolved throughout the book and I enjoyed each of their unique relationships with Esme. Only one is destined to be her love, of course, but the other is destined for the type of solid, supportive friendship we should all be fortunate enough to have.
Hobman has a way of pulling me into her stories through her characters as well as the setting. I was ready to hop a plane to Drumblair Castle after reading book one. Each successive book has only intensified that desire. I want to take the tours, picnic in the gardens, hoist a pint at the local pub, and just hang out with all the characters who feel like they've become friends.
While I'm glad I read the books in order, readers new to this series could easily begin with Shooting Stars Over the Highlands without feeling lost or confused.
4.5 stars ARC received from publisher via NetGalley Tour Review: Rachel's Random Resources Fair and unbiased opinion
A wannabe Scottish actress deluged with male interest😯
4.5🌟 stars Very appealing, easy and quick read set in Scotland, one of my most loved venues.
Castle Drumblair owner Lady Olivia MacBain has hired new PA Esme who was crushed by an abruptly ended relationship not so long before. Esme steps into her new position at a castle that's been the object of her dreams since she was a child and soon finds herself socializing with her teenage dream movie star; fending off a blast from her past; and getting close to her new male (platonic) housemate who may not be so platonic in his feelings for her.
This novel had sweet, slow burn romance and a heroine who put her professional acting dreams aside at the encouragement of her loving parents but finds new opportunities to stretch her innate acting skills when the castle becomes the set for a movie and she nabs the female lead in the local amateur drama group's production of Romeo and Juliet. The plot is never boring and I could not stop reading, finishing the story in less than a day. And the author kept me on tenterhooks wondering would Esme pick a romantic partner, if so who, and where her ambitions would take her.
Judd, Esme's housemate, was my favorite character. With him, the author included a main character who is neurodiverse and has a lovely talent for speaking from the heart with the language of flowers. Zachary the movie star had lots of positive points but I did not find him quite as appealing.
Another good adventure centered on the inhabitants and staff of Castle Drumblair.
Thanks to Boldwood Books for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My Opinion
Shooting Stars Over The Highlands is a delightful addition to the series – this is a series that I would recommend reading in order to get full enjoyment. This was a quick, uplifting read and it was nice to catch up with some familiar characters. Lisa Hobman has done it again, another great book.
Esme Cassidy, 23, is getting over being dumped by her boyfriend she met when traveling during her gap year. So, back in Scotland, she is delighted to be offered a job as a PA to Lady Olivia MacBain of Drumblair Castle. She has always loved living near the castle with her parents.
While Esme had dreams of acting, she is especially thrilled to find that a TV series called “An Unlikely Inheritance” will be filmed at the castle. So that she won’t have to be taking a bus to and from her home, she decides to share a small cottage on the estate with a gardener named Judd.
An actor who is part of the TV series being filmed at the castle, Zach, is someone on whose she has had a bit of a crush. When a couple of chance meetings end with Esme helping him with his lines, they are both rather attracted to one another. However, Esme also finds that Judd also offers a life while not as glamorous but happy and fulfilling.
As interactions with both men show both to be decent, Esme decides the best man for her. Who will it be?
This is a clean story that shows how one woman learns about two wonderful men but finds the right man for her. There are some funny times and some times leaving the reader biting their nails. This author has penned yet another delightful story. Enjoy!

2.5 stars I really wanted to like this book, but I found it a bit of a slog, especially at the start. I think at times I found the dialogue a bit twee and un-naturalistic, like Judd telling Esme her overprotective parents were like that because she was ‘precious to them’. I also was annoyed by how much Esme’s parents infantilised her. While I was pleased finally her parents admitted they needed to let go and let her be an adult, it seemed a bit too little too late and, at no time did Esme assert herself enough. The drama with her ex was also unnecessary and didn’t add anything more than drag the pace even further.
I think for me, the nail in the coffin was FINALLY Esme lands herself some acting success and then decides she won’t pursue it, instead sticking to the safe and boring life being Olivia’s EA. It was never her career dream, so WHY did the author do this? I thought this would be a book about a woman finally taking the riskier path after her suffocating parents forced her to decline her place at a prestigious drama school!
Romance-wise, Judd was indeed a sweetheart and I like that the author wove in his neurodivergence, but it felt like insta-love.

In this interesting new modern romance novel, readers meet Esme Cassidy, who wants to be a famous movie star and the owner of Drumblair Castle. Encouraged to study for a “real” job, a brokenhearted Esme returns home after university and a year spent traveling to work as Lady Olivia MacBain’s PA at Drumblair Castle. Living in one of the estate cottages and learning that a period film (starring her teenage celebrity crush) will be filming at the castle, Esme has the chance to watch her dream job unfold and, perhaps, get her foot in the door to the future she wants. With a great protagonist and a beautiful setting, readers will love Esme’s journey from brokenhearted PA into someone pursuing her own dream on her own terms. Esme is a relatable and realistic protagonist, and her struggles with herself and with other characters help further her character arc and the larger plot. The characters’ relationships to each other help further the story and the conflicts, and they really shine throughout the novel because the emotional tones are so strong. Entertaining, heartwarming, and uplifting, readers will love this charming new novel, its excellent characters, and the beautiful Drumblair Castle from Lisa Hobman.
Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.
Having missed a couple in this series, I was thrilled to fall straight into the story and not feel even a little bit at a disadvantage for not having the whole backstory. The writing is effortless as it sweeps the new story along without failing to fill in any blanks along the way. As we meet the new characters, I got the feeling that Esme may have been introduced previously, but that didn’t put me at a disadvantage, as the focus is on her for this story, so I was reminded of everything that I would need to know in a gentle manner. Among the things that I needed to know was that Esme had dreamed of being a film star and pursuing a career in acting, but her parents had encouraged her to find a job with fewer risks. Having grown up with dreams of being the lady of the local castle at Drumblair, she is now content to work as PA to the current custodian, Lady Olivia McBain. I immediately connected with Esme and felt her disappointment that her former partner had turned out to be less than she had hoped. Now single, she is focused on work, finding her own place, and moving out of her parents' house. Esme had a strong sense of duty, and her determination to do right by her employers was immediately apparent. We then meet Judd, the castle’s groundsman. A handsome yet somewhat quirky character who needed a housemate to help with his costs in a rented house in the grounds of the castle. A perfect solution for Esme’s need for independence and much handier for work. Judd is a balm to her troubles, and it’s impossible not to fall a little bit in love with him. You may think that the endgame is visible at that point, but let me tell you about the lucrative booking for a film shoot at the castle with a host of stars, including the actor whose poster was on the wall in Esme’s bedroom. With immediate chemistry between Esme and the star and then the complication of her ex appearing, nothing is straightforward. I loved being back at Drumblair and didn’t feel like I’d been away. It was excellent and is highly recommended.
Esme Cassidy is healing from the end of a relationship and finds herself the new PA at Drumblair Castle. Not the job she's always dreamed of, Esme at least gets to live in the castle that's fascinated her for her entire life. She also meets Judd, the castle groundskeeper who also has a room for rent. Then, when Drumblair Castle becomes the setting for an upcoming movie, Esme gets to witness the career she didn't get to explore, and meet her crush. So many potential love matches for Esme.
Shooting Stars Over the Highlands is an emotionally rich novel. The story between the pages is a heartwarming contemporary romance. I enjoyed coming back to Drumblair Castle and meeting Esme. She, along with everyone in the book, is well-written, 3-dimensional, and complex.
I enjoyed the author's writing style, the story, and how everything came together. I was pulled into the story from the beginning and kept thoroughly engaged. The author wove a masterpiece together, filled with romance, love, anxious moments, tenderness, and frustration. I was captivated by this wonderful story.
This is a lovely escapist novel set in the Scottish Highlands. It is a heartwarming, feel good story of second chances, growth, discovery and love.
The book follows the story of Esme who has gotten her ‘dream’ job at the castle where her childhood crush is filming a movie. Throw in lovely and adoring colleagues, the movie set and even a Romeo and Juliet play production and you have this book.
There was never a dull moment in the plot with all the several things going on together. I love how the author was able to mesh all of these together.
I love all of the characters and the sensitivity with which the author described and represented ADHD and autism.
The setting was superb and I enjoyed the scenes with the Northern Lights and the constellation. I love the somewhat mystery of who Esme will choose even though it was obvious where her heart was.
If you are looking for a warm read with quirky and interesting characters then you should read this.
This is book 4 in The Highlands series and having already read the first 3, I was looking forward to this one.
It was lovely to catch up with the usual characters from Drumblair as well as getting to know the new ones. We had met Esme before and this book is predominantly her story.
She is such a likeable and relatable character and I felt for her trying to get back on her feet again. I loved the interactions between her and Judd as well as her and Zach. I knew who I wanted her to be with and hoped she'd chose the same
I love the Highland setting and I feel I know the castle now due to the author's descriptions.
This was such an uplifting read with lots of fun, drama, romance and great supporting characters, and don't forget the dogs. Definitely a series I would recommend and I hope there is more to come.
Thank you Rachel's Random Resources and Boldwood Books for my gifted copy and spot on the blog tour.
This is the fourth installment of The Highlands series by Lisa Hobman, but it can be read as a standalone without hindering the reader's enjoyment. The story revolves around Esme, who returns to her hometown to rebuild her life after a heartbreaking experience. She moves in with a male work colleague, and over time, romance begins to blossom between them.
The characters are well-developed, bringing out genuine emotions that make the story feel realistic. I particularly loved how Esme’s boss treats her employees with kindness and genuinely cares about their well-being. What I admire most about this story is that, unlike many cozy romances, it doesn’t immediately reveal who the endgame couple will be—keeping readers in suspense throughout the book.
This book is highly recommended for fans of emotional slow-burn romances, small-town settings, and stories about fresh starts, healing, and unexpected love.
Ooooohhhh I just love all the drama! It was great to catch up with everyone at the castle again, and I loved learning about Judd. He is such a great character and described really well, my favourite quote from him is when he describes himself to Esme as a ‘neurospicy bloke’. It was so great to see ADHD represented and handled so great.
I loved meeting Esme and learning her story, the drama! Lots of twists and turns. Rhys was a character, and as a parent of adult children I could really identify with her parents, and how they just wanted to protect her, but in doing so they were stifling her.
The dynamic between Zach and Judd over their feelings for Esme was interesting to read and I liked the growing friendship as she discovered more about each of them. I have to say Judd is a cutie and I love that he gives the correct flowers for the occasion. And the ending was amazing.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion. I really enjoyed the last book in this romantic series. This book concentrates on new characters whilst maintaining the inclusion of Olivia as the main character threaded through each of the stories. I thought the new storyline in this book was good and particularly liked Judd, the 'odd' plantsman, who has his own struggles. However, once again there are such numerous mentions of musicians and songs (and 'Mother Swift') that I felt as though I was reading a playlist recommendation. The storyline in this book lent itself to a similar thread of films and actors until I felt as though the removal of these titles would have saved pages and pages of padding. The excellent atmosphere created by this author raised my rating from 3 to 4.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author, and I loved it just as much as the first! Feel-good fiction at its best—warm, charming, and exactly the kind of book you want to curl up with after a long day.
Esme’s journey from heartbreak and uncertainty to independence, friendship, and unexpected romance was full of charm. The castle setting, the behind-the-scenes film drama, and the sweet chemistry between her and Judd made this story a delight. With quirky supporting characters, floral metaphors for unspoken feelings, and a healthy dose of wit, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish. Light, lovely, and highly recommended!
Thank you Boldwood Books, NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, and the author for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions are my own.
Two dreams from childhood, put behind her now, To be an actress and live in a castle somehow. Instead she’s working as a PA and lots more In that same castle with possibilities to explore.
With a film being made there, who’d think there’d be a chance, To see what’s involved - including romance! With her teenage crush in the starring role, too, Just what should she devotion do?
A story where dreams may somehow come true, Where friendship, and romance can help them pull through. Such a fun read, with a great community, And plenty of drama for all to see!
I really enjoyed this delightful read I hope you agree it’s the next book you need! For my copy of this book I say thank you As I share with you this, my honest review.
Esme has dreamed of being a star since she was small, but life didn't work out that way for her. She finds herself working as a PA to Lady Olivia, owner of Drumclair Castle, where a Hollywood blockbuster is being filmed. Will watching behind the scenes, and starring in a local am dram production scratch Esme's acting itch?
A lovely gentle romance, along with stories of friendship and broken hearts. A wonderful series, and this is a great new installment - I enjoyed revisiting the castle and old favourite characters, watching relationships grow and change. A must read author and series for me.
Esme is still recovering from a bad breakup while going through life working as a PA to Lady Olivia at Drumblair castle when she meets her teenage crush, actor Zachary. While she works there, she also slowly befriends others such as Parker and Judd.
The pacing is slow and honestly nothing much seems to happen throughout. Even when possible love interests appear, the romance is more of a slow burn and it felt like there were too many filler scenes.
Hence, I found it hard to read through the book and at times I would just skip through some scenes or chapters. Overall, it was an interesting premise but just not a good fit for me.
I love this series by the author and couldn’t wait to meet new characters and catch up with much loved ones from the previous books.
I honestly thought I knew how the love story part of the book was going to go but I was pleasantly surprised. The author has a way of reeling us in very quickly and keeping us there. So much so I read this book in one sitting.
I absolutely loved the setting. As always the author shows her love of Scotland throughout the book. Roll on the next one.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy for review.
A wonderful bit of escapism with great descriptions of Scotland that made me want to pack my bags and go there. I really liked all of the characters and they felt like real people versus characters in a book. I did find the constant references to Taylor Swift a tad irritating but it definitely didn’t ruin it for me. Was the ending a bit far fetched? Yes, but this was also acknowledged in the book and stranger things have happened. A bit of light hearted reading, perfect for anyone who just wants to get away from the real world for a few hours.
Esme has always wanted to be an actor but was discouraged from pursuing an acting career by her over-protective parents. She is also dealing with heartbreak after a love affair that ended badly. She is ready for a new beginning and is happy to land a job at Drumblair Castle as a PA to Lady Olivia and move out of her parent’s home by sharing a cottage on the castle grounds with Judd. As for acting, an amateur production of Romeo and Juliet will have to suffice. Life changes forever when a movie crew arrives to film a period movie at the castle. Romantic and heart warming!
Loved being back at Drumblair Castle and I feel the inhabitants of the castle are friends, it’s like a community where everyone looks out for each other. Esme is enjoying her job as PA to Lady Olivia and there’s great excitement as the castle is booked for a film shoot starring Esme’s favourite film star Zach who she has loved forever. Judd a groundsman/gardener at the castle is looking for someone to house share and Lady Olivia suggests Esme would be suitable. After a series of misunderstandings and a few surprises Esme had her dreams come true.
