Ken Armstrong is a proud member of Fighter Command’s first Spitfire Squadron, the most daring and skilful pilot in that elite band. While Britain prepares for war, Armstrong is mystified to be summoned to an obscure airfield in East Anglia. There, he’s informed that he’s been selected to play a crucial role in Britain’s battle for control of the skies. He’ll fly directly into enemy territory to uncover Nazi secrets, risking his life to reveal intelligence that will give Britain superiority in the air. This is just the start of Armstrong’s war — his skill and speed will see him outsmarting the Luftwaffe at every turn.

BOOK 1: FLAMES OVER NORWAY
April 1940. Pilot Officer Ken Armstrong is shot down on a reconnaissance flight over Norway. He finds himself fighting with Allied ground forces before reaching an RAF fighter squadron operating from a frozen lake in the far north. There he’s given a perilous mission — smuggle Norway’s gold reserves out of the country. With no aircraft of his own, his only option is to steal one of Germany’s planes from right under their noses . . .

BOOK 2: FLAMES OVER FRANCE
May 1940. The Nazis are poised to invade France. Flight Lieutenant Armstrong is deployed to photograph the advance, but on his first sortie his plane is shot down. Stranded, he joins the depleted French Air Force to hold off the Luftwaffe’s relentless air assault. As Stukas and Messerschmitts rule the sky all hope is lost . . .

BOOK 3: THE INTRUDERS
Summer 1940. The Luftwaffe are terrorising the skies over Britain. Armstrong is called to Fighter Command HQ and given a secret mission — form a special squadron to sneak into German territory and destroy its bombers before they take flight. Armstrong’s Bristol Blenheim fighters are no match for Germany’s Messerschmitts. The odds are against them, but Armstrong has a committed team of pilots who will sacrifice everything to succeed.

BOOK 4: FORTRESS ENGLAND
Early 1941. The German navy rules the English Channel and is blocking essential supplies to Britain. Armstrong’s squadron is tasked with destroying enemy ships so Britain can regain control. British intelligence reveals that the Germans are about to launch their new warship, Bismarck. Once in action, it will secure German advantage across the Atlantic. Armstrong’s men have one aim — stop Bismarck before it leaves port. But storms of German flak and the harsh winter weather are against them.

BOOK 5: DESERT COMBAT
Autumn 1941.

Read the entire series. Overall there was good content surrounding the main character and those around him. But there was just to much side information about non story related content. I really did not need to know what some Admiral or Generals overall strategy was. I almost quit reading due to this. To me it was entirely too much information and completely superfluous to the book(perhaps it was content filler for page count). It took away from the series overall. If you skip the chapter the Author plugged this in you could enjoy it. In fact I recommend you do this if you read it.

It was an interesting chronological development of the character through the various phases of the war. It was a long read taking in the six books and at times it was more like reading a history book with the novel being side-lined, although I can appreciate the need to set the historical context. I also felt that the story ended rather abruptly and did not reach a logical conclusion.

However, I did enjoy the books and following the exploits of Armstrong, Baird and Kalinski and the vivid descriptions of what they had to endure.

The series was great to read and fairly realistic. I really enjoyed them although I didn't like the way it ended and how each book seemed to jump some things. But overall, it was good and kept me guessing what was coming next and from what I remember about World War II through the history books seemed realistic enough.

A major effort in compiling a compelling history of aviation in WWII. Excellent history is wound around and through the exploits of Squadron Leader Armstrong as he is cleverly inserted into most every aspect of WWII aviation. He serves in locations I wasn't even aware were involved in the war. A really good read that will leave you much enlightened about the air warfare of the time.

Six excellent books covering all of WW2, They also include what are actual facts and events which enhances the stories,I was a little disappointed with the ending which leaves the reader wondering what was the fate of the character,Did they all survive,Did Ken and Pip return to the UK Did Kalinsky go back to Poland.Well written Robert Jackson.

A great series of books, full of adventure and historical facts.
One thing I noticed was whilst reading the book of Armstrong in the desert campaign, it was very similar to Yeoman in the Western desert!

Impressive

An enormous amount of research has gone into this work of “faction”, and I found it extremely enjoyable. Despite Armstrong being fictitious I felt I was there with him in all the theatres of WW2.

Compelling reading.

History in a fictional setting but exquisitely factual. Excellent account of how the war was progressed from , primarily, an air force point of view.

A Jolly Good Read

A great diorama of RAF activity in WW2 unencumbered by the silly personal lives in other versions of this type. Highly recommended.
