"No one will hurt her without suffering. Not anymore. Not with me in her shadow." -- Soren
...I’m being hunted.
The pursuer is more terrifying than I ever imagined.
Those in my life want to keep me safe; alive. But I’m capable in my own right, and I will do anything to protect them. Once Soren discovers my plan that’s concocted by a witch we all detest... he will despise it.
It will require muting my soul to him, the thing he loves to invade.
I admit, there’s a part of me that dreads his reaction when he can’t have unbidden entry into my heart. If this strategy gets me close to my assailants, though, my family will be avenged and my loved one’s safety will be secured.
It’s time the world meets the side of me that is born and bred in Skull’s Row.
I will be reborn.
...This the second book in Dark Fantasy Romance is a Duet full of foul language, sensual scenes, and improper bastards.
DUAL POV – his/her Finished Series. Guaranteed HEA... even if it might hurt to get there.
Content Warning 18+: This series contains explicit scenes (3.5 chili peppers), depictions of war, battle violence, abduction, graphic depiction of violence, drugging, abandonment, death, and overall a very crude world.
Charlotte Mallory has joined Amazon and their Kindle programs to share her love for Dark Fantasy Romance stories. What she enjoys most is taking well loved tropes and adding her own take on them. Right now, she greatly enjoys anything with Fantasy or Contemporary with an Alpha male lead, paired with a female lead that can absolutely handle her own!
In her spare time, she enjoys nature, bonsai trees, coffee, and taking random art classes.
Here we go. So, this book is fun, but omg the plot does not fit the first book at all. If you have a plot you want move along through your books, that plot should be a *bit* prevalent in the books leading up to the boom…
There was none of that in this. The two books in this duet feel completely different. Now, I did still enjoy this, but I was just not interested in the overarching new plot, as I really had no stakes in them.
However, Soren x Jane scenes are the reasons I’m here, and I loved the character development with both of them!
I still suggest this series, but go in with the expectations that tonally, these books change.
Okay, I’ve finally made the decision to DNF this book! I initially put it on pause, hoping that I’d be able to go back to it, but every time I thought about picking it up again, it just gave me bad vibes... So, I’m officially calling it a DNF.
At first, I thought I was the problem. I still think I might be part of why I didn’t vibe with this book. I read The Secrets of Jane: Forgotten as an ARC... literally 2 years ago. And instead of doing a full reread before picking this one up, I read the last 50 pages to refresh my memory on the world and where everything left off.
And immediately after jumping into this book, even though it picks up exactly where the first one ended, I felt completely lost. I really struggled to connect with the story, and it all just felt so disconnected.
While the world-building is expanded, and we still get that "pirate world" atmosphere, so many new elements are introduced that weren’t even touched on before. It almost felt like everything that happened in book 1 was irrelevant or from a different book entirely because the STORY WENT IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION THAT WAS NOT HINTED AT IN BOOK 1.
I would have preferred if there had been at least a few breadcrumbs in the first book to hint at the direction this story was going to take. So, with a weird new world-building element and new things in the plot, it felt messy and hard to follow. The pacing also felt all over the place. There’s constant action and new information being thrown at you so quickly that it just feels like chaos and overwhelming, and I kept wondering... is it me, or is it the book? BECAUSE I AM CONFUSED?
Then, there is this weird power struggle that happens with all the men in this book, which basically turns into a giant pissing contest. We have Soren growling, "She is mine," her MIA dad who is no longer MIA declaring, "She will never be yours," Blackwell proclaiming, "I will capture her for my God," and this newly introduced villain (who was never even hinted at in the first book) suddenly claiming he has wanted her from the start because of this epic power she possesses... a power that was NEVER MENTIONED in BOOK 1
There’s also another aspect that’s just me being petty..., and that’s the writing style. It felt very choppy, mostly because of the overuse of emdashes. Now, I don’t mind an emdash; it’s actually one of my favourite grammar tools to add a pause. But when you’re throwing in four emdashes per page every couple of pages, it starts to get noticeable. So I think that’s when it hit me... I wasn’t vibing with the writing, and I was subconsciously looking for a reason not to get invested.
Honestly, like I said at the start it’s probably me that’s the problem. I just couldn’t reconnect to these characters, and I couldn’t get into the story again because it felt completely different from the first book. I missed that pull and immersion I had with Book 1...
I am sorry, I feel like the plot was lost, and so I lost interest.
Thank You to the Nerd Fam for the gifted Copy... all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I truly am not sure how I feel about the book. I lost my investment into the story pretty quickly with the MC's. It was just slow. It started to pick up about 50-60% (300+ pages in) when things started moving along, but by that time, I already was less invested. I kept going because something tiny would excite me, thinking, 'okay now we are getting somewhere,' to be quickly disappointed.
One of my main critiques, is the world is completely different than I expected from the first book. It is really felt like a different world. There were no possible clues of where the plot was going, because nothing was even hinted at it within the first book. I would have liked some bread crumbs in the first book, which still can be done without giving away plot twists. I just had too many 'What?!' moments in this book, and not in a good way.
I would read the third book because it is about the Basilisk, and I am very interested who could have tamed that man.
I’m sorry, but Soren is book boyfriend goals to THE MAX. Being in his head is so swoony and delicious. This second installment by cmallory was everything I could hope for and more!!
In this sequel and epic conclusion of The Secrets of Jane, we begin right where we left off on book one. But this time we get MORE pirates, MORE spice, MORE feminine rage, MORE possessive MMC. The character growth is beautiful. The new territories and deeper relationships made my heart swell. There are meddling gods and high stakes prophecies and so many hands in pot of manipulation that blows your mind! I just loved this duet so much and I think Soren and Jane will be one of my all time favorite couples. Their POVs were done so well and I loved seeing them grow in spite of immense and improbable odds.
Tropes you may find in TSOJR are one hammock, meddling gods, fated love, unique magics, religious fanatics, forced proximity, masked men, 🔥 the world for him/her, touch her and 💀, feminine rage, pirates and sirens, medium spice, chosen family, wound tending, a HEA, and release March 3! Book one is already out on KU!
This is definitely in my top favorites reads because I adored this couple so much and the world made me feel like I was in a mixture of the brethren court and Tortuga. Thank you SO much for this gifted arc. I am so glad I got to read this and can’t wait for what comes next in the Improper Bastards series.
Wollte ich ein entspanntes Buch mit ein bisschen Action? Was habe ich bekommen? Einen richtig guten Plot, mehr oder weniger nervige Hauptcharaktere, unerwartet coole Nebencharaktere – und einen Hint auf das dritte Buch! Loved it!
The sequel is here!!! It was worth the wait. Book one was one of my favorite books in 2023 and I was so excited to jump back into Jane and Soren’s story! I highly recommend going into this blind so I can’t get too specific on the details…but I can say I LOVED it!!
Book 2 is a wild ride! There are pirates galore and so much action. Don’t worry, we also get plenty of Soren and Jane. Swoon - I loved these two. They have this amazing chemistry and banter and I could not get enough of them. We get some really great character growth too.
Jane is such a badass and is also dealing with her past. Soren is ruthless and brooding and will burn the world for her…and we might just get to see his vulnerable side too.
✨What To Expect: 🗡️Dark Fantasy 🖤Possessive, merciless MMC 💋FMC who claims her revenge ⚓️EPIC Pirate Ship Battles ❤️🔥Obsessive Love ⚔️TRUE enemies to lovers 🧲Forced Proximity 🏴☠️Pirates, Mercenaries, Warlords ☠️Touch Her & 💀 🔥He’ll Burn The World For Her
What a fabulous conclusion to the duology! Jane and Soren will live in my heart rent free and I loved the character and relationship development that occurred in this book! It was even better than the first and had all the action I was craving! I loved getting to see more of the world as the pirate/mercenary world that was developed in these books was so good! Plus duel POV gets me every time! Just loved it!
Thank you Nerd fam and the author for the eARC copy!
3.75 I enjoyed getting more into the plot and learning more about the world and different magic systems. The twist and turns were a lot of fun. It was a bit of a different vibe from the first book which was fun and flirty but this one is still enjoyable
What an end to an epic romance fantasy duology. I really enjoyed this book. Although book one was better more due to the plot being a lot faster paced. I love Soren and Jane. They will forever hold a special place in my heart.
The duology ends in with a nice open ended story for the next book about another couple which I’m excited for! I loved the revelations, the plot and the badass scenes. Every woman wants a man like soren to come with revange after them. I loved their love story, their connection and how it ended.
My new favourite character that blew me away was Tempest. I have a girl crush on that woman. The pirate queen I need a back story of asap! I’m obsessed with her!
My only small critique was the length of the book. I think there was quite a lot of repetitive inner monologue a which wasn’t necessary and a lot of yapping when I wanted more action. The plot went into a different direction that I expected which was a good thing but I wish we had a bit more foreshadowing of it in book 1. But don’t get me wrong, once the action happened. I was on the edge of my seat!
5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️ I don't have the words! This book! Ahhhn! Omg! Y'all, I can't Jane and Soren! 🫠 Their story shall have my heart forever! I love them so much! This sequel is so freaking good! I have been so ready to continue their story after book 1’s cliffhanger and it was so worth it! This book was so good! The story, the details, the characters, the world. It's all just so beautiful. I was on the edge of my seat reading, trying to figure out what would happen next when I wasn’t reading, and getting wonderfully surprised! The characters, ugh, I love them all. Seeing more of Bones(love him and desperately need his book🙏) and Anya, and getting to know new characters! It’s just so amazing finding new favorite characters and learning more about old favorites. And the villains! They are so fleshed out! I hated them so much, and I love that! This book had everything book one had that I loved but doubled it. More pirates, more feminine rage, more spice! More Soren! 😉 So many emotions while reading, such a wonderfully written story that is full of complex stories. I really can't express how much I enjoyed this book in words. This series had all the things I love, fated mates, unique magic, forced proximity, possessive MMC, dual POVS, and more!! I highly recommend you check this series out if you haven’t already! I'm so excited for what comes next, and while I saw the sneak for book 3’s story I am secretly hoping for a Tempest prequel book in the future! Because this book has me so ready to read her full story! 🙌🏻
I really enjoyed the first book but this one felt so different in tone that I struggled to get into it.
I almost DNF as I found it a struggle to stay engaged with the non-linear plot, it was unclear throughout where the story was progressing. I also found the god backstories quite overwhelming and confusing to grasp, as well as the multiple different name references for characters.
600+ pages for the plot to feel quite stagnant at times felt unnecessary and made it difficult to want to read and continue
This was a very satisfying conclusion to Soren and Jane’s story. I really like the direction the plot took in this one! At times it felt a bit drawn out, especially towards the end, but overall I really enjoyed it. Very much looking forward to book 3 which will be a standalone following different characters. There are so many compelling side characters in this series that I would love to read about! Can’t wait to revisit this world again in the future.
I don’t know what that was. It felt like a completely different book from the first and was a bear to follow. I was able to overlook some of the writing issues in the first book but couldn’t get past them in this one.
The Secrets of Jane Reborn has been one of my most anticipated reads of 2025 and let me tell you that Charlotte Mallory more than delivered with this incredible end to her Improper Bastards duology, a dark pirate filled romantasy world filled with adventure, danger, romance and so much more!
***Warning: If you have not read book 1, this review may contain minor spoilers though I will do my best to avoid big ones***
After being left reeling from the revelations and events at the end of book 1, Charlotte Mallory thrusts her readers right back into the action as Jane and Soren are forced to face just how much danger Jane is really in and the greater forces that are in play in a game of gods and fate that threaten to take down all that they hold dear.
I didn't think that I could fall in love more with Jane and Soren but oh yes I did. It was wonderful to see Jane claim the mantel of her lineage and her goddess given power. Of course, the path to this agency is filled with a fair of amount of pain and sacrifice, but oh how Jane's feminine rage fire burns brightest when those she cares for most are threatened. And Soren--book 2 gives us so much more insight into the complexities of his emotions and just what Jane has come to mean to him. Of course, this does not detract from his singular focus to tear down anyone who dares to take Jane away from him. He is a mercenary after all and he has more than earned his reputation.
If you love a pirate story, book 2 takes us very deeply into the world of those who live and die on the sea and it makes for plenty of fun and trouble. I adored getting to FINALLY meet Papa Ritter and without spoiling much, I just really appreciated having a chance to get to know this enigma of a character more and cheer him on his quest for a revenge that has been years in the making. Beyond the action packed plot and fire filled romance, one of the things I most appreciated about Charlotte Mallory's second book in this series is the wonderful cast of secondary characters that she brings to life. They each have such rich and unique personalities that add so much to the story. It makes you hope she has plenty of novellas and spin offs coming for some of your favorites. Basalisk, Bones and Tempest, I am looking at you!
If you are looking for a dark romantasy that gives you that Pirates of the Caribbean vibe with an FMC who is equally as fierce as anyone of the mercenaries she fights besides, then trust me you want to pick up this series right away. I can't wait to see what Charlotte Mallory has in store for us next!
The Secrets of Jane: Reborn was an absolutely stunning conclusion to this duet! From the very first page, I was completely hooked—the action, the emotions, and the high stakes had me flying through the book. The world felt even richer in this installment, with deeper relationships, thrilling twists, and the perfect balance of romance and fantasy.
I loved every single character, but Jane and Soren truly stole the show. Their growth was beautifully done, and the intensity of their bond made every moment between them feel electric. The push and pull, the devotion, the raw emotion—it was everything I could have hoped for. And the spice? Just enough to make my heart race without overpowering the story.
Between meddling gods, dangerous prophecies, and betrayals lurking around every corner, this book kept me on edge in the best way. It delivered everything I wanted—more pirates, more magic, more tension, and an ending that left me completely satisfied. This duet has earned a top spot on my favorites list!
Thank you to the author and R&R Book Tours for the e-ARC! 🥰🫶🏼
Let me premise this by saying I loved Forgotten and didn’t think the story could get better. I was WRONG. Reborn was utter perfection. 🫠 THIS IS NOW A COMPLETED DUOLOGY 🖤
I laughed, cried, swooned, screamed and lost sleep to finish this book. I don’t think I will ever recover, I love Jane and Soren biblically.
Reborn has more stakes, PIRATES, banter, secrets and reveals, character growth and delicious spice.
We really see who Jane is in this book and she is definitely the daughter of a Zenith. Soren is more open (for him) and his pov chapters scratched an itch in my brain. Watching their personal and combined growth was something beautiful.
Read this is you love the Witcher and pirate of the Caribbean vibes, with magic, messy gods, sirens and creatures, found family, revenge, banter, a broody MMC and a sassy FMC and so much more.
Thank you so much for the arc Charlotte and Nerdfam! 🖤
Multiple POV (but mostly dual), enemies to lovers, found family, Witcher and Pirates of the Caribbean vibes, more pirates!, morally grey, high stakes, banter, sirens, deeper lore, one hammock, touch her and 💀
Soren now firmly in her corner, Jane must face the monsters after her head on now that's she has learned why they need her. She must make a difficult decision to save those she loves and trust a dubious plan of a sea witch.
Do please read the trigger warnings as this book is definitely dark fantasy. I was so happy with the adventure and expansion of the world and story. And of course I love Jane and Soren. They are just the right amount of unhinged for each other. These first two books are Jane and Soren's duology and there was a sneaky announcement of the next related book at the end what will follow some characters I'm excited to learn more about!
Talk about action packed, it had all the pirate shenanigans I was hoping for in the first one. We get so many answers to questions left lingering from the first book and see more of the HBIC Tempest. This is such a tense book. It’s almost like the author said “alright, we got the fun stuff out of the way. Now to kick it up a notch.” And I was seated for every word. Reading more about Jane’s background and how everything came to be was incredibly interesting. Like I want to talk about it more, but I feel like I’m already toeing the line on spoilers.
This book definitely took a turn to be more action oriented and less about spice. Which, tbh, I was totally okay with. I loved how the book split its time telling us what was going on with the characters, and the introduction of The Basilisk. I enjoyed seeing his and Soren’s banter(?) camaraderie(?) I always love when character’s mentors show up and you get a different side of them.
Thank you so so much to The Nerd Fam for the gift ALC of Secrets of Jane: Forgotten, and the ARC of Secrets of Jane: Reborn. Now to impatiently wait for the Basilisk book, don’t think I didn’t see that teaser.
After finishing book 1, I couldn’t wait for book 2 and this book DELIVERED! I absolutely loved Jane and Soren and all the characters as they developed more into the storyline. Jane is one strong woman who faces a lot of trails on her own. She was met with grief her entire life and had to literally face her demons and pull from a place that she didn’t realize she could. I loved the chemistry between Soren and her, it was magnetic and addicting to read. I also enjoyed how the author portrayed and teased a book 3 with the Basilisk! You already know I’m itching to read that one when it comes out late summer time! Overall, Jane forgotten and Jane reborn are must reads for anyone into Romantasy, and one of my very top reads this year so far!
4.25 stars! I loved this story. I loved the characters and the world. Pirates and magic and enemies to lovers, what’s not to love!! While I happily gave book 1 five stars, this one was harder to read. There was a lot of gratuitous flowery “it’s like the …” that was absolutely not necessary and broke the rhythm of the read. It was properly placed a lot of the time, I think it just got a little indulgent and was a distraction to me. Others may love it!! I will ABSOLUTELY read the next book about the Basilisk!! And will highly recommend this book to my Romantasy folx. I’m so glad that @thenerdfam gifted this arc so I could recommend it to everyone on publishing day!!
This book had my heart in a vice grip for the moment you said go! If you are looking for Pirate Romantasy look no further! This series is incredible!!!! The depth of love Charlotte makes you feel for her characters is a hot beautiful mess. I cried to many times to count on this last book. I found myself clutching my pearls in suspense. And the line… “With more love than I can describe,” will sit with me for a long time to come. I love this series I’m only sad I can’t read it for the first time again.
“I feel your heart as if I’ll know it for decades.”
This was so good 😭 perfect fantasy romance!! The plot and character growth was so good. I loved the world and the time out on the sea was written perfectly. The main love story was everything to me. I want Soren so bad. I’m so excited for the next standalone in the series
I absolutely inhaled the first book, read it in 2 days. But this one took me forever! It’s much slower and felt like a lot of repetitive internal dialogue. If you listen to audiobooks, definitely wait for it to come out! It probably would have been 5 stars for me if I could have listened at 2X lol
I loved how the story wrapped up though and still enjoyed it a lot
"Wherever Jane is, something catastrophic is happening."
This book picks up right where book 1 ends. Jane and Soren are in a relationship now, but they are still hunted by people. So the quote at the top is pretty much the theme of the whole book.
You feel like you are in a rollercoaster and it seems like our favorite new couple cannot take a break. They cross the ocean on a pirate ship, they are hunted by gods, and have to save sirens. This book has everything you want in a romantasy. I love the big fighting scenes, the pirate ship scenes, the escaping and saving, and how this duology came to an end.
The next book will be set in de same world, but with different characters so I can't wait to see where that story is going!
An incredible sequel! I love Jane. I love Soren and I loved all of the side characters. The plot continues from the first novel so there isn’t a ton of world building except where needed to introduce new places. The character growth and development was the main focus and it was beautifully crafted. While I’m sad this ended Jane and Soren’s story, I’m so glad there will be additional books in this world.
This is such a fantastic end to what has been a brilliant series. It really is one of those unsung gems of a book, where I will never understand how so many cheesy and mediocre series get so popular, which books like this are so unknown.
