The final, thrilling instalment in this must-read fantasy series.
"I should have known I'd find you in a tomb"
Silvaein is at war.
As an enemy nation stalks the borders, battle has a deadly toll on both sides. Casualties are high and allies are few.
In the capital, Piper leads a security team of quickly dwindling guards as citizens are called to the front lines. Along with Beka and Alec, she works tirelessly to end the war and bring about victory. But when secrets are revealed and loyalties are tested, Piper must put aside her feelings for the good of her country – even if that means losing everything.
With foes on all sides and trust fading fast, Piper and her friends fight for their very survival in a political landscape full of deceit and betrayal.
Perfect for lovers of Throne of Glass, Lady of Darkness, and the Grishaverse, The Dark Flame of Chaos is the final book in TF Johnson's debut fantasy trilogy.
TF Johnson spends her days in imaginary worlds swordfighting, defeating monsters, and talking with dragons.
TF Johnson has a degree in Interior Design, which she has never used, is addicted to chocolate and coffee, and would spend her days with her head in the clouds if she had the choice. She has an incredibly understanding husband and an English Bulldog who is the best writing companion ever – Even if she does have a habit of putting her head on the keyboard and leaving it there.
In her spare time, TF Johnson collects books to read, which is a completely different hobby to actually reading them. She has 173 books on her to-read shelf, a number which is steadily growing.
When she’s not reading or writing, TF Johnson can be found trying out new hobbies and spending time with her friends and family.
Wonderful conclusion to an emotional trilogy. Johnson delivers a tense roller coaster as Silvaein faces war without any allies. The characters each face their own internal demons as they grapple with the struggles of the kingdom. Johnson delivers some twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes as she winds them toward the conclusion of the Belladonna trilogy. If that wasn't enough, I loved finally getting to see our MCs admit their feelings for each other while also getting to see Piper with both her adoptive kids. The found family aspect of this final book in the series will give you all the warm fuzzies.
Overall, this final book delivers a beautiful conclusion to a wonderful and immersive series.
Oh my god This was the conclusion Like So much happened but it ended in a way where everyone is at peace and no one is out right suffering But of course There was death and tourment Ugh So much death Too much I want to cry thinking about it Actually I am shhhh Just thinking about this
THE PLOT
first I want to say. Everything was sooo well tied together Everything from the first books tied up here, and there are little like ‘Easter eggs’ from the first book that I was so excited to see I love when an author brings things back cause it makes it hot so much harder Like just everything was wrapped together and explained and just Ughh And the romance Like even though it wasn’t the main part… it was still there and damn was I ITCHING for it O top of this, the friendships we got! although I’m annoyed and sad for many of the characters.
OKAY So basically we start and piper is in the palace with everyone blah blah She is the head of security and shit So yeah She is with maddy and Caleb and it’s basically all dandy There are a few stress points, aka the war and the fact that guard is low because of reallotement Or whatever the word it So she has to have like A guard trail?? She has to find guards thag can protect the royals So like She does that But beforehand she figures out that Iso (yes the assasin) is alive and invites him The candidates include others such as Liam (the police officer who I’ve grown to live), Lance (someone Alec knows) and a few others So yeah she selects them However during this time her and Alec are having some conflicts and tension Hehe And then boom Beka needs to marry someone Whose a good option you might ask Alec… And what else does this mean? If Alec and BEKA get married and marry their kid to lysandas first kid, lysanda will help them in the war What choice do they have Then The moon festival Where shit goes to hell :) Basically Everything is okay Piper is a little sad cause achard wanted to meet maddy so she is sorta alone But then she like? Finds Alec and his fam or soemthing And he and Alec are gonna dance 🕺🏻 But then we’ll, he has to do something, and then she sees him dancing with beka Oh snappppp Hm Afterwards I belive she goes outside and Alec follows her and then they KISSS. You heard me. The slow burn of three books BURNED but then we’ll People start screaming And when the two run inside There is assassins A lot And they are trying to kill the royals And they succeed Killing the high lord And killing many people of the guard Along with this, the ring leader was LORE I swear to FUCK anywho…. After this they make the decision to go to the winter palace? I think it’s called. It’s in riannivh Aka pipers hometown of like country/province. She is nervous. And alone. Because she and Alec can’t be together cause of the marriage and stuff. So. They travel to the palace, achard in tow And while there they begin to gather information about how to fight the shivek. This information includes a sword, which piper has from lore (from the first book. That was cool) that can kill the shivek And they find out that blood magic, also know as pioer, can also kill it Nothing else And then that morning in the library Alec and piper hehe But then no more hehe They have an argument because turns out. Alec knows Alistair (aka the mage working with the shivek) Oh also forgot to mention, the shivek is indeed pipers great great great grandfather or something like that I called that! Hm OH random notes Norrix died. I was fucking GONSMAKED because what do you mean out only other source of protection is dead And Maya was indeed the traitor I knew she was. I’m so smart. After that she decides HA I’m useless let me go sacrafice myself So off she travels to go fight the chaos demon alone. But beforehand she goes to see her family home, where she runs into Alec Yk cause he followed her. And then Alistair is there And he… restricts Alec’s magic, and takes pipers illis So she is dead And in the winter land While in the winter land she meets a wolf/artvak I think it’s called And she is really nice She helps piper go through some rip in the worlds And this sends her to summerland Where we get some CRAZY info dropping We find out that the creator and destroyer are like pipers grandparents (on her mums side) and that like piper can choose to stay dead or go back She chooses to go bakc When she goes back she … to be continued. Okay back Okay So she goes through back to the normal world on kostins back because he gave up his immortality to help her And then she has to find her body Which she does pretty easy However the next hard step is that she and Alec have to split after he says I LOVE YOU BRO Cause he has to fight alistair And she has to face hakenthos (the fucking shivek) And we follow her And when she gets there I genuinely belived Yeahh easy fight whatever Nope He somehow manages to pin her against a wall (not on the good way) and transfers keevas soul into hers So now piper is fighting both a chaos demon and for her own soul Like WHAT And after this Someone… KOSTIN MY BABY calls from the sky He is dying and bleeding Don’t I’m sobbing no I can’t think about it But then she gains the upper hand through her blood magic, but he kicks her and it ends up failing. And he almost gets her spiked through but she created a sheik from Kostins blood. Hmmm After this she manages to kill him with the dagger. However, then the two hods (death and ??? I can’t remember the name actually) come down to get kostins body/aoul And while there they comfort her but also say “you can save him” ALEC IS DYING. so she springs through the war that is currently happening right next to her. And saves Liam Then finds Alec and Alistair In a fight that isn’t even Alec is overpowered But she manages to distract Alistair However he almost like… kills her So then Alec is like NO and uses ALL his magic (aka his illis aka his life) to kill him Which succeeds But he is also almost dead Ha Ha Ha After this the war ends via aridian surrendering cause of mayas captivity Then we go back to the original palace and low and behold Alec is still like dead But then we have a night where the lord of aridian surrenders And there she sees Alec Alive And anxious For what you ask THE RING BOX HE HAS IN HIS POCKET THEY ARE GETTING MARRIEEDDDDDDD AHHHHH yeah we basically end there but then a little more happens The signing of the surrender And the joining/happiness of the families and stuff The end I’m gonna cryyyhyyyy
CHARACTERS
PIPER this girl will never EVER catch a break Can she have one good thing Bam The shivek is your great great great great grandfather Bam Your grandparents are gods Bam You die Bam Your boyfriend dies LUKE GIRL but it’s okay Because in the end she made it out alive and happy But honestly I love her character I think I said it in my review of the first book But I love how even though she is strong and an assassin and can thrive alone She still have the capacity to love and feel and cry. Like she raised those kids with emotion She fought for her country with love She let herself be weak but never falter And honestly we all need to learn that She hid who she was at times, which is honestly the most accurate thing I’ve ever read, but she was never false to herself And I love that so much
ALEC when he was dying I was crying I actually couldn’t During this I loved seeing how he was close to his family And how he wanted piper to be part of it, because she didn’t have her own And also Everything he did was for her Like yes he loved other people like BEKA But he never wanted to marry BEKA It was always piper He fought and almost died for her How much more romantic can it get But I also love how we got the mention at the end of his oberwhelming power Like when he said that he was glad it wasn’t as strong Thag was something Because like idk It would be overwhelming being the best at something because of expectations But I also because he couldn’t fully control it He was probably always scared of hurting someone
KOSTIN don’t Get Me Started This damn dragon saved lives He was always there protecting piper And he died to save her I’m going to cry I can’t do it He didn’t deserve to die He was the best He was always there and now he is just gone It’s like a hole in my heart Coke back Please
BEKA honestly I was angry at her for a second there When she was gonna marry Alec even when she knew about him and piper But honestly I don’t think she ever had plans to marry him I think it was all for show I love that she cared more for her friends then the approval of others That made me fall back in love with her Like she never gave up on piper even when she was mad She was always a constant and even when she wasn’t as available she always double checked with her friend
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
JAI honestly I wish we had more of him Cause I KNOW he has more depth. I know it He was literally tortured I really loved when he opened up to piper I just wish we got MORE Honestly if there was a book about him I wouldn’t be angry
MAYA I knew the betrayal was coming And yet I was still sad But also she ended up helping so I was okay But also her and jai coukd have been something and she just threw it away
LIAM I knew I would live him and his cuntiness Like he was SASSY WITH A CAPITAL S I love him He was always there for piper But not like emotionally But in the way where he knew what it was like to have someone to go home to And that he knew that soemtimes she needed funny not serious I don’t know how to explain it JUST BUY THE BOOK
NORRIX if one more character died Ong He died I was dead He was like pipers father figure and then he just DIED nope
AXHARD when he turned away at his execution I thought there was no redemption But he did By dimly standing by pipers side when she needed it during the war And by taking maddy and Caleb and stuff with joint custody instead of just claiming them He Cared
ISO him coming back has got to be the biggest shock of the century But also I’m so glad he did Even though he wasn’t prominent I liked that he understood piper He knew what it was like to be under lores grip He knew what suffering meant
okay I loved a lot more characters but that’s all I’m gonna write about I think
MENTIONS
CALEB
MADDY
OLIVER (Alecs brother) and TALIA (the sister)
I think that’s actually it.
HATE
LORE if he came back ONE MORE TIME I was going to go into silvaein and kill him myswlf I’m so glad that iso was the one who got to kill him And that he is dead Because he didn’t deserve to live after all her put those KIDS through
HAKENTHOS oh My God No one cares that your wife is dead WHY DONT YOU JUSY DIE TO GO SEE HER you ruined EVERYONES live and didn’t even care because it meant you were happy That is selfishness at its best Like how does one think like that How dare you You almost destroyed my babies I hate you <3
ALISTAIR if he dared dared To kill one of my babies I would have lost my SHIT Because he took pipers soul Almost killed Alec Like STOP again same with the chaos demon. I understand grief I do But not to the point of KILLING t bring someone back It’s not fair
hmm I think that’s it? (I say as there is 15 people here)

Also being an ARC reader felt like a dream come true, especially because I now LOVE this book/series
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have been waiting for this since I finished the ARC of book two and oh. My. Goodness. It did NOT disappoint. I think my heart may have been ripped from my chest a couple of times, but it found its way back eventually 😅 This conclusion to the Belladonna Trilogy was everything I was expecting and then some. It was just as action packed as it's predecessors, filled with so much emotion! Although I'm sad the series is over, I'm glad Piper and Alec got their happy ending 🥹
Sometimes you wait too long for a book, and when it comes around it sort of falls flat. WELL LET ME TELL YOU - THIS IS NOT THAT! TF Johnson delivers another gut wrenching installment in the Belladonna Trilogy and I was hanging on every single word.
As a fantasy romance girly, I was delighted when the slow burn finally ignited. Piper and Alec both have proven how devoted they are to each other, and honestly seeing Alec step up as a _man_ was absolutely delicious! "Then tell me a story. I'm busy." might honestly be one of the most underratedly witty and wildly sexy statements ever (you'll only understand if you've got the whole context so no spoilers here).
And then the final reveal and twist to the story came so suddenly, and sideswiped me completely! And even better, it tied the whole story up so perfectly. I honestly can't wait to reread the trilogy just to spot all the foreshadowing!
Thank you to TF Johnson for the opportunity to read and review The Dark Flame of Chaos prior to its release.
An exciting end to this wonderful trilogy, I cannot believe this series is over but I am so happy with how it all turned out in the end! There were plenty of battle scenes, political maneuvering and of course the slow burn finally burning to keep this book extra exciting, especially with a war and potential arranged marriage plan afoot!
I loved following this series and getting to do it all in one go made it even more impactful and emotional. This last book both made me sob and smile in the best ways and was a beautiful conclusion to this series! While I am so happy with how it ended and glad the reluctant allies to friends to lovers finally worked out, I do hope if there are future books in this series we can explore more of Bekas potential love interests since she’s one of my favorite characters! Overall I really enjoyed this final book, it was my favorite of the series and my rating is 4.7/5!
Thanks to the author and R&R book tours for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!
I've been here since the beginning of the series and I'm absolutely nostalgic about the characters! They've all definitely grown, some went through redemption arcs, some got the karma I'd been hoping for but most importantly, they've gotten the best conclusion a reader could ask for. I totally adore this book the most out of all three and it was so worth it - jealous Piper is my favourite animal, the court tension, the tender moments - everything was heart wrenching in all the best ways. Piper with a whole new community that loves her, count me in. AND FINALLY everything I've been waiting to learn about Piper and her history has surfaced and I'm flabbergasted that the author dropped a bomb so close to the end. Hoping to see more of Piper or Easter eggs somewhere or anywhere in the future.
Received an e-ARC copy to read and I greatly appreciated it. I had already read the first two books in this trilogy and loved where the story was headed and I was so excited to read this one even though I didn’t want the series to end. I was on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish, and when I finished it I was happy with the ending. If you haven’t read this series yet, do yourself a favor and add it to your TBR pile
This book is a MASTERPIECE. If there was a 6th star I would give it.
There is a tea dragon. A TEA DRAGON. One simply cannot 😭😍
But on a serious note, the ferocious heat of this slow burn, the tension, the stakes, the beautiful development of Alec and Piper, and the delve into the lore of Kostin and his kin is so perfectly done. I laughed, I cried, I almost threw the book across the room a few times.
This whole series is incredible and I am LOST now it’s finished 😭
A great conclusion to this trilogy which I have enjoyed a lot!! There’s instances in this book which I hope we get more on in expansions to the world, but if we don’t that’s okay! Many moments in this had me :O and the general plot was wrapped up in a very neat way! My man Alec was top tier as always <3 I highly recommend this triology to anybody who is a fantasy fan!!
What a fantastic conclusion to this trilogy! I loved how everything came together and I simply adored the soft moments between Piper and her friends/family in between the action.
