The first issue of this is really weird because it wants to take place immediately before and after the inciting event of the show, without spoiling what that is and so characters talk in a weird vague way.

After that, it's a fairly standard Spider-Man origin story with a few cute moments but not much to elevate above any of the other Spider-Man comics I've read with Felix.

Felix rating: 4 stars, his favorite parts were when Peter is training with his spider powers and Fancy Dan.

When YFNSM (I'm not writing that out in full each time) was originally announced as Spider-Man: Freshman Year, we were meant to be getting the origin story of the MCU Peter Parker - that went out the window pretty quick, and YFNSM was even better for it. However, here comes the YFNSM tie-in comic to give us Peter's first adventures in THIS universe instead!

Ever-reliable Spider-Scribe Christos Gage pens a yarn that feels part Silver Age, part Modern Age, with some fun continuity pulls like the Enforcers that prove troublesome for our fledgling hero. We get to see some more of Peter's interactions with Aunt May and Nico, and their first forays into their new school after Midtown High exploded in the YFNSM pilot, so this definitely fulfils the mission brief as bridging the gaps.

The artwork from Eric Gapstur also bridges that Silver/Modern line, as well as invoking the feeling of the cartoon without going hard on the heavy lines. There are a couple of times where he makes Peter's legs MASSIVE, which did make me laugh, and his interpretation of Silvermane is hilarious for the right reasons.

Want more Spidey? Want more YFNSM? Then here you go. Recommended.

Sure, we've seen Peter Parker's journey into becoming Spider-Man like a million times by now, but I'll always have a soft spot for awkward teenage Peter just trying to do his best and protect the people he loves. It was cool to see the Enforcers, Man-Mountain Marko, and Wave. Probably would have gotten more out of this if I had seen the show but I haven't yet. Also I know Nico is there because she's in the show, but...why lol. I guess it's like implied that she's in foster care or was adopted after her parents were exposed as members of the Pride but there's no mention of the other Runaways, not even Karolina, and she doesn't have the Staff of One or any other magic so she just felt kind of superfluous.

Read these floppies with my son as they came out monthly. The release schedule was a little rough with delays but overall we enjoyed the straightforward narrative. I do think Peter needs to be more of a nerd and less popular, but his new friends and the general vibe of the series was "Spidey updated for the modern age" of cell phones and complicated family dramas. My kid liked it. The art was probably the best aspect, as it blended well with the TV show.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Old School / New School - 4/5 Stars

This is actually a Christmas gift for my dad. But often times when we get each other books we’ll read them ourselves in advance just because they’re there and available and why not it’s kinda sweet! So I did that for this and really liked it! It gives very similar vibes to the shows. Nails that aspect perfectly id say!

Onto the next book!

*3.5 stars

Cute and fun prequel to the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man cartoon. I love reading stories from early in Peter's Spider-Man career. This book wasn't quite as good as the TV show, but I'd still be open to reading more comic spin-offs of the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man show.
