1. Today we are going to be starting a unit on a brand new topic: space! Even though this is a new topic, I bet there are things that you already know about outer space. I want you to turn and tell your partner anything you know about outer space. (Students turn and talk). (Attention getter) Who can tell me something you know about space already? (Student input). Great, I want you to keep all of those things in mind as we read the book Space and the Wonders of the Solar System. This book is going to take us on a tour through space, introducing us to all of the planets, stars, and other objects that exist in space. This will be important to know as we learn more about space and why it is important to know about it. Today the book will be a non-fiction book with a lot of interesting pictures and titles that will help prepare us for what we are about to read. As we read, I want you to listen to the many things that you can find in space.
2. My opening moves for this first book in our unit prompts a brief sharing of personal experiences related to the topic or theme, raises interest in a topic or theme by having students discuss it and drawing their attention to the artwork, lays the groundwork for children’s understanding of diverse settings (i.e. space – by having them discuss what they already know), activates background knowledge of what students already know about space, and draws attention to the writers and illustrators crafts.
3. I chose this as the first book in our unit because it gives a basic overview of many important topics discussed in space. It addresses all of the different planets based on the type of planet it is, discusses space exploration, the relation of earth and space, questions about space, and even the future of space and its exploration. Students will get a lot of information about space that will be solidified through further readings of texts about each planet as well as activities to help students apply their knowledge of space.

Danny became obsessed with space after watching some sort of documentary at his grandparent's house. Grandma sent him home with one book, and Dad picked up this one shortly thereafter.
