“A devastating, passionate takedown of Chief Justice John Roberts's Supreme Court by a Washington insider.” —Jane Mayer, author of Dark Money
In the last twenty years the US Supreme Court has radically curtailed voting rights, undermined anti-corruption measures, encouraged extreme political gerrymandering, restricted the regulation of guns, and obliterated the constitutional right to control one’s reproductive choices. This transformation was orchestrated by a billionaire-backed reactionary political movement, whose interests Chief Justice John Roberts has been all too willing to serve.
Without Precedent explodes the falsehood that Roberts is a fair-minded institutionalist who works to blunt the worst impulses of other Republican appointees to the court when, in fact, he has led the rightward transformation of the court’s jurisprudence while presiding over the most corrupt and corrupted Supreme Court in American history.
Informed by Lisa Graves’s experience working on judicial issues for all three branches of the federal government, and based on years of intensive research, Without Precedent not only exposes Roberts as the reactionary politician in robes he has always been but delivers a vigorous plan of judicial reform designed to overcome the divisive, discriminatory, destructive, and anti-democratic machinations of the Roberts court.
Brilliant dissection of the worst Chief Justice in American history
A must read for every American disillusioned and disappointed by the degradation of the Supreme Court. Graves pulls back the heavy curtain separating the non-legal public from the machinations that have resulted in the currently kidnapped court. You’ll learn how we got here, understand the damage and danger done by Roberts, and end with hope and energy to restore the court to its constitutional role, as the voice of the small and voiceless, not the rich and powerful. Brilliant read that I could not put down, and I hope you pick it up too. America needs more of us to understand and will fight, Lisa Graves makes that possible for regular folk. Thank you!
After reading this book I can safely say that I would certainly recommend this book to everyone to read. I would even go so far as to say it should be considered mandatory because of the excellent references that are given regarding the very poor actions of the Supreme Court under a particular justice. However one criticism that I do have and that is that the author tends to present this information from a recent or new position. The bad behavior of the Supreme Court dates back for centuries. But critically speaking this type of behavior must be directly tied to the Supreme Court in the mid 1800s. Particularly the Dred Scott case where it specifically states that the white man do not have to recognize any rights of the black man. So why is that important? It’s important because the Supreme Court particularly under the white male rule. It’s not unusual or uncommon for the Supreme Court to go directly against people not just against court precedents. The white male specifically targets black people but unfortunately today’s political platforms attempt to separate their complaints as if it’s a complaint against law or in this case precedence. The courts are specifically targeting black people and of course you’re going to cite that it’s targeting other people that are non white. That’s only partially true of course because black people are specifically targeted where that other people’s are accepted under various circumstances or other conditions where black people are not accepted completely. But as far as the excellent citations and recording of the supreme courts very bad behavior I would rate this book certainly at a level 4. And that’s very high for me. You should read this book and include it in your library when it comes to the political actions of the courts and other parties when it comes to civil rights and the liberties of the American peoples.
I knew John Roberts was a regressive racist but I had no idea how much he despises the American people and Democracy. He has steered America's law to only see "citizen" in male white rich Christian landowner/ wealthy corporation.
