My Name Is Henley: My Life and Times as a Rescued Dog

Rate this book
An Old English Sheepdog starts out his life as the runt of the litter at a puppy mill in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Abused, neglected, and left to die, Henley is finally rescued by a shelter worker and then adopted into a loving home. Written in the dog's voice it brings you closer to the situation from a perspective that needs to be heard. Henley eventually relinquishes his title as top dog when he welcomes not one, but five rescued cats into his life. The interaction between canine and felines is touching, humorous, and captivating. This is a story of kindness, patience, love, respect, and understanding for lovers of all creatures great and small. Publishers Part of the proceeds from this book benefits three animal rescue organizations.

My Name is Henley teaches empathy, compassion, and respect for all living things. The book begins by showing how cruel an animal’s life can be and goes on to model exemplary relationships between and among humans and animals. Along the way it portrays cats and dogs as they are. At several points during the story I laughed out loud at pet behavior that mirrored the behavior of my own two adopted and much loved cats and other pets I have known and loved throughout my life. What new cat owner hasn’t had their cat try to climb the Christmas tree? What dog owner isn’t immediately greeted by their pet when they enter the house or hasn’t had their dog scramble for a car ride? This book is great becaust it is easily accessible to young readers who are both very interested in animal stories and most capable of absorbing the books message of compassion. My Name is Henley is a real, relatable, well-written story of the love animals bring to life that asks us to be worthy of that love.

This is a children's book about Henley, a rescued Old English Sheepdog. I'm not an animal fan, but this was a cute book and I'm glad Henley was saved.

Very cute, sweet book. A little sad sometimes, but good for kids and especially dog people (though, as a cat person, there were enough cats that I enjoyed it quite a lot).
