About the author

Sukumar Ray (Bangla: সুকুমার রায়) was a Bengali humorous poet, story writer and playwright. As perhaps the most famous Indian practitioner of literary nonsense, he is often compared to Lewis Carroll.

His works such as the collection of poems Aboltabol (Bengali: আবোলতাবোল), novella HaJaBaRaLa (Bengali: হযবরল), short story collection Pagla Dashu (Bengali: পাগলা দাশু) and play Chalachittachanchari (Bengali: চলচিত্তচঞ্চরী) are considered nonsense masterpieces equal in stature to Alice in Wonderland, and are regarded as some of the greatest treasures of Bengali literature. More than 80 years after his death, Ray remains one of the most popular of children's writers in both West Bengal and Bangladesh.

He was the son of famous Bengali writer Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury and the father of the renowned film-maker Satyajit Ray.

বাংলা ভাষায় surrealist ও Nonsense literatureএর মধ্যে সবথেকে অন্যতম সৃষ্টি হচ্ছে সুকুমার রায়ের লেখা "হযবরল", it's like the "Sgt. Peppers" of Ray's bibliography...

যেখানে উনি শিশু সাহিত্য লেখার কৌশলে roasts the fuck out of the shortcomings in our so called three pillars of democracy. Redtapism ও Corruptionএর বিরুদ্ধে ওনার এই বার্তা ১০০ বছরের ওপর পেরিয়ে গেলেও যথেষ্ঠ relevant ও hard hitting, যার ফলে মানুষের দৈনন্দিন জীবনের এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ হয়ে ওঠে এই লেখা।

যার ফলে this classic creation একটি নতুন জীবন খুঁজে পায় শ্রীচার্বাক দীপ্তর সুদক্ষ তুলির আঁচড়ে। সুকুমার রায়ের রঙিন মনের যেন এক প্রতিফলন হয় এই Graphic Novel-এর পাতায় পাতায়। দীপ্তবাবুর রঙের ছোঁয়া at times presents itself like a love child of Sukumar Ray's original illustrations, Dalli's colorful and bizarre surrealist art and Lewis Carroll's text layout style... (বিশ্বাস করুন Carroll মহাশয় যেভাবে "Alice In Wonderland" কাহিনীতে অনেক জায়গায় টেক্সট লেআউট যে ভাবে উনি সাজিয়েছেন তা দেখে তাক লেগে যাবে আপনার)।

সত্যি কথা বলতে আজকের দিনে দাঁড়িয়ে চার্বাক দীপ্তের গ্রাফিক নোবেল পড়া ও ভারতীয় ক্রিকেট দলের খেলা দেখা তথা উপভোগ করা প্রায় সমপর্যায়ে হয়ে গেছে। ভারতীয় ক্রিকেট দল যেমন খেলা জিতবেই জিতবে তেমনই there can never be any complaints in Mr. Dipta's artwork, ওনার consistency is অতুলনীয়।

কিন্তু হ্যাঁ দীপ্ত বাবুর আঁকা, রংয়ের ব্যবহার ও লেআউট সাজানো যেমন খুবই সুন্দর হয়েছে তেমনি ভাবে যেখানে উনার একটু খামতি বোধ করতে পেরেছি, পাঠক হিসেবে, সেটা হচ্ছে উনার চিত্রনাট্য। মূল গল্পে এমন অনেক সুক্ষ ছোট ছোট বিষয় আছে যেটা এক ঘটনা থেকে আরেক ঘটনার সাথে একটা যোগ স্থাপন করে। Even though everything feels like a state of whimsy, that whimsy is always laid out on a set path, যার ফলে ঘটনার স্রোত খুবই মসৃণ ভাবে চলে।

পাঠক হিসেবে দীপ্ত বাবুর গ্রাফিক নোবেল পড়ার সময়, আমার দু এক জায়গায় যেন মনে হয়েছে Plot Point A থেকে Plot Point B-এর transition খুবই abrupt ভাবে হয়েছে। যেন চিত্রনাট্যকার হিসেবে উনি মনে করছেন যে সকলে মূল গল্পটা আগে থেকে পড়ে এসেছেন। সত্যিই তা হবে না কেন সুকুমার রায় বহু বাঙালির ছোটবেলার এক বড় অংশ। যার ফলে এই সামান্য চিত্রনাট্যের দোষ খুব একটা বেশি লোকেরা বুঝতে নাও পারতে পারে। কিন্তু এখানে I stood out like a sore thumb...


এই পাঠক, সেই খামতিটা বোধ করতে পেরেছে, কারণ সে জীবনে প্রথমবার, দীপ্ত বাবুর হাত ধরেই, সুকুমার রায়ের "হযবরল" পড়েছে। তাই দু এক জায়গায় পড়ার সময় মনে হয়েছে, "আরে, এটা কিভাবে হলো?"। দীপ্ত বাবুর রঙের মায়া জালের মন্ত্রমুগ্ধতা থেকে যখন এই পাঠক নিজেকে বার করতে পেরেছে তখন সে তার ছোটবেলায় পাওয়া সুকুমার সমগ্রের পাতা উল্টাতে থাকে, খুঁজে বার করে মূল কাহিনীটি। তারপর কাহিনীটি পড়ে সে আসল পার্থক্যটি বুঝতে পারে।

কিন্তু সত্যি কথা বলছি, এই পাঠক is just nitpicking... all in all I had a great time reading this graphic novel, I had a fantastic time reading the story and had a blast hearing the audio drama conducted by radio mirchi with Mir and Team... তাহলে বুঝুন যে কতটা ইম্প্যাক্টফুল এই দীপ্ত বাবুর গ্রাফিক্স নোবেল টা হয়েছে, যার সাহায্যে আরো অনেক শিশুদের ও এই পাঠকের মত নির্বোধ বড়দের কাছে সুকুমার রায় আরো অনেক অসামান্য সৃষ্টির কথা জানতে পারবে।।

Haw Jaw Baw Raw Law is one of Sukumar Roy's greatest classic creations. The rich graphical emphasis of this all-time classic literature by Charbak Dipta, inspired by the original, has added a new dimension to the creator's creation. It's a nostalgic read. I look forward to more such creations from the author Mr. Dipta.
