As I turn the key in the lock, I tell myself that I’m a good mother. I’m doing this to keep my little girl safe. No one knows she’s hidden in my room, or who I really am. But if they ever did, we’d have to run for our lives..
As I push my cleaning cart around this luxury hotel, I try to tell myself I’m doing the right thing. I look just like any other maid. No one even notices me. But I see and hear everything
I breathe a sigh of relief when I close my door behind me. I’ve made it through another day without anyone discovering that I’m hiding my toddler Alice in my room.
I know the other staff would judge me for keeping her locked away. But I have no choice. They have no idea what we’re running from. And if anyone sees her, we’ll need to run again.
I thought this remote resort was far enough from my past, and we could finally start over. But our hiding place is shattered when one of the other maids is killed. It feels too familiar. And deep down I know—this is a message for me.
Someone here knows about my past. And when I run back to my room to check on Alice, my blood turns to ice when I find she’s gone.
How far will I have to go to get my child back? And what will happen when they find out who Alice really is…?

"Her Hiding Place" is an electrifying thriller that expertly combines the nail-biting suspense of a locked-room mystery with the raw emotional turmoil of a mother's fierce determination to protect her child. A secluded resort in the Florida Keys right before a relentless hurricane strikes, the story is packed with unexpected twists and a claustrophobic atmosphere that ultimately draws you in.
Meet Charlotte, the unreliable protagonist, who adds a compelling layer of intrigue to the narrative. Haunted by her past, she takes a housekeeping position at the resort while keeping her three-year-old daughter, Alice, hidden in her room. Charlotte's unwavering drive to protect Alice injects a heart-wrenching emotional core into this gripping tale, particularly as the storm outside entraps them in a harrowing web of lies and murder.
Hollinger’s vivid writing creates a suspenseful environment where every coworker seems to have a secret and the creaking of the hurricane-lashed building hints at lurking dangers. The storm serves as both a literal threat and a metaphorical reflection of Charlotte’s spiralling fears, significantly amplifying the tension that permeates the story. The pacing is razor-sharp, featuring brisk chapters that propel the narrative to dizzying heights, dropping clever clues that keep you guessing at every turn.
The expertly executed twists and revealing shocking truths about Charlotte’s past and the dark hidden secrets of the resort heighten the stakes. The hidden-child angle injects thrilling urgency, making each moment feel like a countdown to disaster. Although there are moments that stretch credibility—such as Alice's remarkable ability to remain unnoticed—the gripping momentum and emotional depth ensure you remain deeply invested in the story.
This book is a treasure trove of excitement for fans of locked-room mysteries and psychological thrillers. Hollinger’s exceptional storytelling shines through her memorable cast of characters, from the enigmatic Leo to Charlotte's duplicitous coworkers. And when you think it's all wrapped up, the epilogue leaves tantalizing threads that linger in your mind.
If you crave a tale bursting with jaw-dropping twists, atmospheric tension, and rich emotional undercurrents, "Her Hiding Place" is an absolute must-read. I admit I had to suspend my disbelief regarding a three-year-old managing to stay hidden without causing any noise. Still, Shannon Hollinger has outdone herself with this thrilling rollercoaster of a novel that truly packs a punch—highly Recommended! I read my third Shannon Hollinger book, and she didn't disappoint! Expected release date January 31, 2025
Thanks to Bookcouture and NetGalley for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I Will post review soon— My husband has had a terrible chest infection for a week. I gotta go walk my dogs before they start a protest! 😊🦮🐕🦺🐾🐾
Gripping, dangerous, intense, and full of dread, Her Hiding Place kept me fully invested and turning the pages! I loved the 'trapped' feeling of this book. The looming hurricane, the mystery of why Charlotte is on the run and hoping to hide with her daughter, Alice.
Charlotte accepts a housekeeping job at an island resort and finagles her way into the attic apartment. She keeps her three-year old daughter, Alice, a secret. Hidden away and frequently left all alone, Alice must be silent so that her presence is not detected. Charlotte thought they would be safe there, but when a body is found, Charlotte knows the stakes are high and they may be in danger once again!
I enjoyed not knowing who I could trust at the resort. I could feel Charlotte's fear, concern, and mistrust jumping off the pages. The suspense and tension are off the hook and only multiply as the storm hits and the staff are trying to evacuate. This book had me on the edge of my seat and my heart beating faster and faster.
I also enjoyed how Shannon Hollinger provided flashbacks to the past so that readers get a better understanding of Charlotte's life before she went on the run, which left me further intrigued and invested in the plot. The author also threw in quite a few twists, turns and revelations as well with one that left my jaw hanging open.
This was a fast paced, pulse pounding mystery that grabbed my attention from the start and never let go! Shannon Hollinger has delivered once again!
Intriguing, shocking, tension filled and pulse pounding.
I had both the book and the audiobook version of Her Hiding Place which made for a wonderful reading experience. I thought the narrator of the audiobook did a fantastic job.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
In many ways, this is your typical locked-room mystery. We have an isolated island with very few people on it, but one of them is a killer. There is someone with a huge secret. And as usual in these kinds of books, there is a storm coming in that threatens to take the electricity out and make escape impossible. Though this has all those common locked-room attributes, this is very much a page-turning thriller!
Charlotte is on the run, almost out of money, and carrying the most important thing to her in the world: three-year-old Alice. In a moment of desperation, she applies for a job she sees, hoping it will be a chance to make a bit of money before moving on to the next chapter in her life. It’s a job as a housekeeper at a resort that is about to open, and it comes with room and board. The only problem? She needs to keep Alice a secret. If her evil boss find out she has a child with her, she could lose the job and this chance at escaping her old life. She begins work readying the property for its grand opening, all while hiding Alice in their room, the girl never getting to go out for fresh air or exercise (it’s a little “Flowers In The Attic”). Just a few paychecks is all she needs though, then they can leave…but before that can happen, Tropical Storm Lilith rears her ugly head.
As the days go on, the storm becomes a hurricane and grows larger - much, much larger. Most of the people working at Sundown Key are optimistic it will turn at the last moment, but eventually it becomes clear that they are directly in the path. Towards the end, the staff still remaining are about to evacuate when they realize it’s too late; the only thing they can do is ride it out and hope for the best. Charlotte goes to her room to comfort Allison and try to live through this nightmare, and that’s when things really start getting intense. The power goes out, a body is found, everyone starts trying to arm themselves, and the hurricane slams down on the century-old building.
This was captivating from page one, and it never let up as the story went along. There is also a backstory that revolves around how Charlotte’s life has ended up in this position, and it’s excellent. While it does contain all of the common locked-room mystery elements I mentioned, it seemed anything but formulaic as it touched on the very serious and heartbreaking backstory. I wish Alice had been in the story more; her character was so endearing! Also, after the third or fourth (or fifth?) time I was reminded that Charlotte is on an island in a hurricane and can’t swim, I knew something would happen surrounding that. These are tiny things though - if you want a heart-racing psychological thriller that you won’t be able to put down, this is your book. 4.5 stars, rounded up.
(Thank you to Bookouture, Shannon Hollinger and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.)
I listened to this one and the narration was ok, but didn’t always seem to fit the story. The story was interesting, but way too slow of a burn to be “gripping.” When the twists did come I found them to be pretty predictable and there were some strange bits that weren’t even needed. Charlotte is desperate for this chance to work in a resort since it comes with lodging and food. Charlotte isn’t just broke she is desperate and has a small child to care for and hide. But a hurricane is coming and there may not be any shelter from this story. This was a super quick read, I just wanted a little more action and a little more twisty turns. The characters were all pretty one dimensional but it was an entertaining story.
Charlotte, an unreliable narrator in Shannon Hollinger’s latest book, appears to be on the run with three-year-old Alice. As she narrates a chilling tale, she finds refuge at a resort in the Florida Keys, where she has secured a housekeeping job. This might be her only chance to save Alice from a looming danger. However, Charlotte soon realizes that they will be fleeing from a raging storm as a hurricane directly targets them.
Throughout her ordeal, Charlotte has been keeping Alice hidden, unaware of the impending storm. Before Charlotte and the other employees at the resort can devise a safe escape plan, a different kind of danger threatens their lives.
This locked-room mystery unfolds at a fast pace, especially as the reader tries to unravel the guilty party. The added challenge of hiding a small child, almost in plain sight, intensifies the tension and intrigue.
One aspect that I truly appreciated about this captivating novel is the author’s clever use of subtle clues throughout the story. With occasional flashbacks, the narrative gradually gains shape and reveals more details.
As a grandmother with two three-year-old granddaughters, I found it difficult to imagine either of them capable of remaining hidden for hours on end, as Alice did while Charlotte worked. Despite this challenge, I was thoroughly engrossed in this thrilling book, unable to put it down as the twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
“Her Hiding Place” by Shannon Hollinger, had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! From the very first page, I was hooked. The suspense is absolutely gripping, and Hollinger does a fantastic job of keeping you guessing. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, a twist would come out of nowhere, and I'd be left reeling. The pacing is perfect—just when you think you can catch your breath, something happens that pulls you right back in.
The characters are well-developed and complex, especially the protagonist, who is so relatable and layered. I found myself truly invested in her journey and rooting for her even as the tension built to a boiling point.
What really stood out to me, though, was how unpredictable the plot was. I was never sure what was coming next, and that made the experience of reading this book so thrilling. If you love suspense and enjoy a story with plenty of twists and turns, I cannot recommend Her Hiding Place enough. It’s a wild ride from start to finish, and I couldn’t put it down!
When I saw #thebuzz about this book at #thepulse I knew I had to jump on this one and I am glad I did!!!
A woman down on her luck gets a job at a remote Key West resort that is opening soon. They don’t know she is hiding her child in her room during the day. She has to keep her a secret for more reasons than you can guess. Then a massive hurricane begins heading straight their way. They will have to fight for their lives….from the hurricane AND the murderer hiding in plain sight at the resort!
I enjoy locked room thrillers and that is exactly what this one was! It is my first by this author but I plan to read more! I flew through this book in a couple of days. I thought I had everything figured out but I was proven wrong! Go pick it up to see what the buzz is all about!
It’s beginning to look like a me issue, however this time I’m confident that the story was all a bit loose. It was a definite slow burn, too slow though. If you’re telling me I’m going to be gripped I expect to be at least taking notice. The narration also felt all wrong for what should have been a tense and gripping story. It just didn’t have any hold on me at all I’m afraid.
Don’t get me wrong, I really wanted to know why the child was in the room, why they were hiding, but it took far too long to get to the answers and I had all but lost interest by then
Somewhere between the story being dragged out and the narrators lulling soothing voice it just fell apart. From the multiple 4 and 5 stars here I’m going to make the assumption that the narration might’ve been all wrong?
I really do hate leaving a bad review, it feels mean spirited, and I try to appreciate that everyone has put a lot of work in, but honesty is key I think.
I do really appreciate to opportunity to review this ALC 🎧 I’m grateful to bookouture Audio and NetGalley for providing me with this copy.
This thriller had me hooked from the first word. The narrator gave emotion to all the characters/ Dripping the back history into the story gave it an edge feeling as it felt like there were two stories that were somehow connected. I wrongly guessed the true relationship of Alice to Charlotte but correctly felt the snugness and the evil of the hotel manager. I was blown away by the backstory and it made me think that this is something that must happen a lot but society never talks about it. The plot itself was action packed and fast paced full of red herrings and twists and turns. It made me care about Alice and Charlotte regardless of the truth of their situation. The only thing that had me feeling omg wth was the ending it felt very unrealistic and over the top hollywood hype that yes gave the reader a happy feeling but seems so unrealistic it took away some of the impact of the story for me. This was enjoyable from start to almost end, good solid narration, story and characters and felt a short listen, perfect for any thriller readers who are able to accept an ott ending. Thank you netgalllery, publisher, author and narrator for this 4 star read.
Charlotte is broke and on the run when she takes a job at a resort in the Florida Keys. Her housekeeping job comes with room and board, which is perfect, because she needs somewhere to hide Alice, the 3-year-old little girl no one knows she has with her. Between her mean boss Evelyn, her bitchy coworker Brooke, and a shifty maintenance guy named Harvey who seems to be watching her a little too closely, Charlotte doesn’t know if there’s anyone she can trust. As a hurricane bears down on the resort, Charlotte is desperate to protect little Alice.
This is such a tense, atmospheric thriller! The hidden child aspect really takes this locked room mystery to the next level. There’s an undercurrent of danger from the very beginning, and I was on the edge of my seat worrying that Alice would be found by someone bad. Once the massive storm hits, the action ratchets up to high gear, with the bodies piling up and the twists coming in fast and furious! Really kept me guessing, and the epilogue was so satisfying!
Charlotte is on the run with three-year-old, Alice. Out of money, she applies for a housekeeping job at a hotel on a Florida Keys island. Hiding Alice will be tough, but she only needs a few paychecks to keep moving. A massive storm, however, cuts off the island from the mainland.
Boy, this was stressful—a new level for the locked room subgenre. Hollinger offers a gripping, high-stakes tale that mixes the tension of a physical lock-room with the psychological constraints of trauma and domestic violence.
I've never experienced a hurricane myself, but reading about one is stressful enough. A hurricane serves as a powerful metaphor for the escalating crisis, creating an atmosphere filled with danger and distrust as tempers rise and idle threats are made. Then, a dead body is discovered. This murder heightens the stakes even further, as the island's isolation transforms from merely a physical threat into a life-or-death situation with a killer in their midst.
What sets this book apart is its exploration of the locked-room subgenre, where Hollinger doesn't just limit the setting to the confines of the island but also delves deep into the invisible, psychological confines of abusive relationships. Through flashbacks, we learn of the abusive cycle Charlotte is desperately trying to escape, adding an extra layer of emotional intensity. The violence can be difficult to read, so please exercise caution if you have any triggers.
Other highlights: short chapters, little cliffhangers, lots of suspects
✨️ The team at @thrillerbookloversthepulse are reviewing Her Hiding Place and it is addicting !! 🔥 You'll definitely want to add it to your TBR.
Her Hiding Place is an addictive, suspenseful, atmospheric roller coaster ride that had me in a chokehold from the beginning. There's an added layer with the hidden child and a constant feeling of danger. The story moves at a decent pace, edging more on the slow burn side for me but still managing to constantly keep me on the edge of my seat. It kept me guessing all the way through. While I had some things figured out, some truly shocked me.
I really enjoyed the author's writing style. I loved how she left little clues here and there. How she wove the story and created an intriguing storyline. Some things were a little overly descriptive for me, and I would've liked a little more dialogue instead, but overall this was definitely a fun ride.
✨️Thank you to @thrillerbookloversthepulse, @netgalley, @bookouture & @shannonhollinger for my gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Big thanks to Bookouture for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Her Hiding Place is just enough of a pleasant read to want to decipher to the final sentence. A locked room mystery with thriller tendencies. Charlotte arrives at an island resort to start a new job. Included in her work as a housekeeper she is given accomodation in the attic. With her, is her three year old daughter Alice who she needs to keep hidden. Why, we don’t know as yet…. Then a hurricane is imminent and a body is found. A netting of lies, secrets and murder is thrown in and someone is about to be unmasked…… I mostly enjoyed this but found one thing that continuously annoyed me. If you can overcome this flaw, overall, it was a pretty good read. The multiple twists, some I figured out and others were out of the blue. Across the board or should I say book, I was entertained.
This was enjoyable, but requires a lot of suspension of disbelief to make it work. A 3 year old cannot be left alone all the time, never allowed outside, and be quiet for any length of time. Likewise, if a 3 year old knew a secret they would tell. The parentage of said child was pretty obvious as the language never said who she belonged to. I loved the epilogue as a villain origin story for Charlotte, it would be fun to see her begin some vigilante justice for other abused kids while keeping it a secret from Alice. Lots of twists, I thought it was fun, and I love a locked room mystery which is what the hurricane does.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author Shannon Hollinger, and Bookoture Audio for my advance copy of this audiobook
Man this was a pulse pounding book for sure. This does such a great job with keeping you guessing and making you keep turning pages to see the final outcome. A super quick read that does not disappoint:) I definitely didn’t see the ending coming at all. A few small things I think kept it from 5 stars. But would totally read more from this author! Thanks NetGalley for the arc!
Charlotte has just accepted a job as a housekeeper in a luxury hotel on a remote island in the Florida Keys but, hidden in her room, away from all the other staff, is three year old Alice. Charlotte will do whatever she can to keep her safe, because they are on the run and if anyone finds out everything will be taken away from her, including Alice, and all that she's done in her past will have been for nothing. When one of the other staff members is found dead, Charlotte fears it's a warning to her and, going back to check on Alice she discovers she's gone, desperate to find her but with a storm raging outside, she wonders if they'll escape before her secret is revealed.
Her Hiding Place is a fast paced thriller where Hollinger gives us an in-depth backstory to Charlotte's past and, peeling back the layers of this story, we discover why she is on the run and desperate to protect Alice, whatever the cost. This is a nailbiting tale with plenty of twists and Charlotte soon begins to realise who she can and can't trust and she soon lets her guard down, but is she putting her faith in the right people? Hollinger kept me on the edge of my seat throughout with a story that was full of intrigue and tension filled drama. It's the first I've read by this author but it certainly won't be the last.
I'd like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Amazon and Goodreads.
Her Hiding Place By: Shannon Hollinger Pub date: January 31, 2025 Publisher: Bookouture
This novel kept me engrossed most of my Sunday afternoon. Thankful my roast was in the crock-pot, because I was turning the pages to find out what was next. How many secrets are kept and broken will make your head spin.
Charlotte is our protagonist and she shows up to be a maid on a secluded island. She sneaks in a little girl Alice. No one knows about the little girl hiding in the attic. Charlottes’ shifts are long and she is trying to feed Alice and keep her secret.
The hotel’s grand opening is in a little over a week, but a storm is brewing in more ways then one. Charlotte is keeping more secrets as well as other staff members. As the storm is heating up everyone is ordered off the island?!!!
This novel is MIND BLOWING, SUSPENSEFUL and ONE every Thriller Lover should read. Thank you to Bookouture and my colleagues at Thriller Book Lovers, The Pulse as this is one to pick up in the new year!
This is the first book by this author that I’ve read or listened to. I made it a point to see if she has any other published books prior to this one, as I felt it was a good book for a first time writer, but mediocre for someone who’s published before. I was surprised to learn that not only has she previously published, but also works as a crime scene tech when not writing books.
The story follows one woman, hiding a secret, as she starts work as a housekeeper at a key west estate. From the start, you get breadcrumbs about her past that lead you to the answers she’s withholding. I felt her dialogue a little predictable and expected. To believe the storyline, you have to accept that this is just a book and not based on reality. Lots of important aspects we skipped over while small irrelevant details were over described. I also did not like the audio narrator- her tone, cadence, etc did not match what the character was saying.
Overall, not a bad book, just not my style. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this ALC.
A seemingly desperate woman with a past and a big secret...gets a job cleaning in a resort hotel where she receives food and accommodations. Turns out she needs both of these to hide away her child while she works. With a cast full of somewhat sketchy characters, Charlotte is wary of whom to trust...and rightly so. An impending hurricane makes things even dicier and everyone is scrambling to get ready for it. This is a perfect example of how your true selves might come out during a high-stress time. I found this overall entertaining, but had trouble finding anyone to root for. Some of the circumstances and twists are pretty far-fetched and somewhat easy to predict. Overall recommended for thriller lovers looking for a quick read where you don't have to think too hard. The narration for the audiobook was sometimes good but not always spot on for the different voices she was trying to achieve. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARL. All opinions are mine.
This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! From the first page I was hooked! It was so intense and the suspense was absolutely gripping. The author did fantastic at keeping you guessing. Just when I thought I had it figured out a twist would come out of nowhere and then another one! Just when you think you can catch your breath something happens and pulls you right back in! The hidden child aspect really takes this locked room mystery to the next level! If you love a suspenseful twisty thriller I highly recommend this one!
This was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last! I really enjoy locked room mysteries and being trapped during a hurricane with a murderer on the loose made this particular one that much more enjoyable!Charlotte’s character was so intriguing and I couldn’t wait to see where her story was going. Filled with tons of suspense and short chapters, this one will definitely keep you guessing throughout!
Charlotte has a new job as a maid at a new motel. The problem, she snuck in a three year old that she didn’t want anyone to know about — or who they’re hiding from.
I enjoyed the author’s writing style. This was a good book and parts of it stressed me out (leaving the small girl in the room for most of the day) which i know was the author’s intention! It was written really well, but I figured out all of the twists so nothing really shocked me at all. The end was kinda rushed and all kinds of stuff happened and then it was over. It was still a good read though.
3.5⭐️
Thanks for Bookouture, Thriller Book Lovers The Pulse, and NetGalley for my ARC
Her Hiding Place is an intense thriller. Jam packed with edge of your seat action, the story is an intense locked room mystery in the middle of a horrific hurricane.
The short gripping chapters, keep you turning the page. I flew through this one.
Her Hiding Place is a captivating psychological thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish. The narrator of the audiobook skillfully crafted the emotions needed to portray an already easy to love character, Charlotte.
With a checkered past that she is trying to escape, Charlotte is on the run in the midst of hiding a 3 year old, fighting to survive during a massive storm and fighting to survive a killer simultaneously. All while stuck on an isolated island. How much can one girl take??!
I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a thrilling & exciting experience. I will definitely be reading more of Shannon Hollinger’s work!
Thank you Macmillan Audio for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed the locked room setting of this book and was curious to read more of the back story to find out why Charlotte and Alice were on the run and in hiding. I did find this to be more of a slow burn, and I think the story could have been shorter. It did really pick up at the end, and there were a few twists that I didn't expect.
I love Shannon Hollinger’s books, so I was very excited when The Pulse got her newest one! Thank you to Shannon and Bookouture for the ARC!.
Charlotte takes a housekeeping job at a resort on a beautiful island. It’s not the ideal job for her, given her fear of swimming, but she has a big secret to hide and this job might just provide the cover she needs. Sneaking three year old Alice into her room, she tries to keep the girl hidden while she works. With everyone busy getting ready for the hotel’s grand opening, it just might work. But when a tropical storm rolls in, Charlotte is in for the fight of her life.
The opening of this book had me shook, and I read straight through 60% of it in one sitting! I simply couldn’t put it down. The tension started on the first page and it didn’t let up for a second. Told mostly from Charlotte’s present day perspective, the story is interspersed with bits and pieces about how the situation came to be. There were several twists I wasn’t expecting, and the pacing as they were revealed was perfect! Deeply atmospheric, with tropical island vibes and a locked room feel, “Her Hiding Place” is a five-star psychological thriller!
”Her Hiding Place” releases January 31, 2025! This review will be shared to my instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly :)
I enjoyed the premise of this book. There was a lot of unnecessary description and very little dialogue. Not much was happening througout. That made it quite slow for me.

Her Hiding Place By Shannon Hollinger Release Day: January 31, 2025
A tense, atmospheric thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The story centers around a woman working as a maid at a secluded island resort, desperately trying to protect her young daughter, Alice, from a dangerous secret. With just ten days until the hotel opens, the narrative is rife with anticipation and dread, as the woman reflects on her life of fear and hiding. The isolated island, where guests will soon arrive and where she has worked long hours in silence, sets the perfect stage for the unfolding suspense.
The plot accelerates when a storm cuts off the island from the mainland, leaving the characters trapped with a killer. A body is found, and in the chaos that follows, Alice’s existence is revealed. This sets off a frantic, pulse-pounding series of events, as the protagonist races against time to find her daughter after she vanishes. Hollinger expertly builds tension, blending the claustrophobic setting with the increasing sense of danger. The idea of being trapped on an island with a killer, unable to trust anyone, amplifies the stakes and adds to the feeling of helplessness and desperation that drives the narrative.
One of the most compelling aspects of this book is the strong emotional core of the story. The relationship between the protagonist and Alice is poignant, as a mother’s instinct to protect her child comes up against overwhelming odds. The unfolding mystery surrounding Alice’s true identity adds an extra layer of intrigue, keeping readers guessing about the full scope of the danger they’re facing.
Hollinger’s writing is gripping, and the twists and turns throughout the novel are unpredictable. As the secrets unravel, the tension becomes nearly unbearable, especially when Alice goes missing and the protagonist is forced to confront the extent of the danger. The pacing is swift, and while the characters may be few, each one plays a significant role in the unfolding mystery.
Her Hiding Place is a well-crafted, emotionally charged thriller that will appeal to fans of psychological suspense. The sense of isolation, combined with the fear of discovery, makes for a compelling reading experience. While some aspects of the plot may feel familiar, the emotional stakes and relentless suspense make this book hard to put down.
Thanks to Bookouture for this advance copy via NetGalley for my honest, voluntary review.
Her Hiding Place by Shannon Hollinger is a heart-pounding thriller that masterfully combines the suspense of a locked-room mystery with the emotional tension of a mother’s desperate need to protect her child. Set against the backdrop of an isolated Florida Keys resort and an encroaching hurricane, the book delivers twists, turns, and atmospheric chills that kept me captivated from start to finish.
Charlotte, the protagonist, is an unreliable narrator whose secrets unfold in tantalizing layers. Struggling to escape her past, she takes a housekeeping job at the resort while keeping her three-year-old daughter, Alice, hidden in her room. Charlotte's determination to shield Alice adds an emotional core to the gripping mystery, especially as the storm’s fury traps them in a dangerous web of deceit and murder.
Hollinger’s vivid writing creates a tension-soaked atmosphere, where every coworker becomes a potential suspect, and every creak of the storm-battered building hints at lurking danger. The hurricane serves as both a literal and figurative storm, amplifying the claustrophobia of the setting and mirroring Charlotte’s spiraling fears. The pacing is razor-sharp, with short chapters that propel the narrative forward while dropping clever clues that keep you guessing.
The twists are expertly executed, with revelations about Charlotte’s past and the resort’s secrets escalating the stakes. The hidden-child element adds an extra layer of suspense, making each scene feel like a ticking time bomb. While some aspects of the plot stretch believability—like Alice’s uncanny ability to remain hidden—the story’s momentum and emotional weight keep you firmly invested.
Fans of locked-room mysteries and psychological thrillers will find much to love here. Hollinger’s deft storytelling and knack for creating memorable characters shine through, from the enigmatic Leo to the duplicitous coworkers Charlotte must navigate. And the epilogue ties the story together beautifully, leaving just enough ambiguity to linger in your mind.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this unputdownable thriller. If you’re looking for a story with jaw-dropping twists, atmospheric tension, and an emotional undercurrent, Her Hiding Place is a must-read. Shannon Hollinger has outdone herself with this rollercoaster of a novel. Five stars!
