Three untold, true stories. Three different stages of survival. Three women share their experiences of intimate partner violence, vowing to no longer remain silent. But the countdown is on for them to speak up and say, no more.

In an unspoken story of survival, Gabbi, a therapist in her late thirties, wants her family to know what really happened to her all those years ago, but she's running out of time to finish writing her story before it's too late.

Seeking safety throughout a lifelong escape, Alex, a school counsellor in her late twenties, struggles to navigate dealing with her clients' traumas while healing from her own when her abusive ex finds her and starts sending letters from jail. Now she must flee again before he's released and hunts her down.

Falling for a nightmare disguised as a dream guy, Katee, a high school student, craves love, but her desperation grooms her for the perfect predator. Now she must escape her abusive boyfriend before she becomes yet another statistic in the femicide epidemic.

The abuse they suffer echoes the countless shared experiences of domestic violence survivors around the world, but their fight for freedom is uniquely their own.

He shall remain unnamed, for he could be anybody's tormentor.

Silence! To many women keep silence in domestic violence and abuse. It shouldn’t be that way but for many it is the only to survive and keep on going.
But, know one needs to keep quiet. Violence in all its form is violence.

This book has three true stories of brave women who did leave the violence. You read about their experiences and their struggles with leaving behind their lives and starting all new. How scared they are to be found by their torture.
And, finally feeling freedom when they realize they are ACTUALLY FREE AND SAFE.
I knew violence not physical but verbal abuse from my father but my mom soon left him and divorced him.
The verbal abuse stopped.

Don’t be afraid to speak out for yourself or if you know someone that is in an abusif relationship.
There is help out there! Let’s stop this cycle!

Some stories are too painful to tell, yet too important to stay silent. No Ordinary Love is not just a book—it’s a testimony, a raw and unfiltered account of survival. Through the voices of Gabbi, Alex, and Katee, we step into the terrifying reality of intimate partner violence. Gabbi, a therapist, races against time to share her truth before it’s lost forever. Alex, a school counselor, battles her past while helping others heal, only to find danger creeping back into her life . And Katee, a young high school student, learns too late that love can wear a predator’s mask. Each woman’s journey is different, yet their pain, courage, and will to survive echo universally.

📖What makes this book deeply impactful is its brutal honesty. The stories are not just about suffering but about resilience , about choosing to fight back even when the odds are stacked against them. BB Gabriel doesn’t sensationalize their pain—she gives it weight, depth, and most importantly, a voice . The narrative doesn’t just recount the horror of abuse but highlights the psychological grip it holds on its victims. The fear, the isolation, the self-doubt—it’s all there, laid bare for the world to see 🫥. And yet, in the darkest corners of their experiences, we find glimmers of hope—an unbreakable spirit that refuses to be silenced .

No Ordinary Love is not an easy read, but it’s a necessary one . It forces us to confront the ugly reality of domestic violence, the silent suffering of so many, and the importance of breaking that silence . It is a call for awareness, for action, and most of all, for change. If you’ve ever questioned why survivors stay, why they struggle to leave, or why their stories matter—this book will answer it all. It is haunting, powerful, and deeply necessary.

It could be anyone. It could be that girl you know. You know the one... the beautiful girl with the infectious smile and the sparkling eyes. The really smart girl, the educated girl, the girl who charms every person she meets. This book could be about her. She may have withstood more pain from the hand of someone she loved than most people will experience in their whole lives. But you would never know.
She is a champion. She is a warrior. She is a literal freaking light of a human. She is a voice that is not just telling a story but yelling it, singing it out into the universe. Not just for herself but for every other woman, girl and human who has faced the heart and body breaking experience of intimate partner violence.

This book is hard to read but even harder to put down.
It is not possible to read it without being deeply changed.
I am so happy it exists in the universe and I hope the stories reach the people who need them the most.

Wow this book was a heavy one. I would even go as far as to say it was not even particularly enjoyable. However, I think it is an incredibly IMPORTANT book that needs to be read to make people aware of issues such as domestic abuse, phycological abuse, and emotional abuse, the violence that can come with it, and the effects it can have in the long term.

This book is definitely not for the faint of heart and if you've experienced any of these issues, it would be an incredibly difficult read/listen (it was for someone like me who has not for instance). Following the characters of Gabbi, Alex, and Katee and their stories was truly moving and upsetting at times. The fact that these are fictionalised versions of true stories makes the book even more harrowing.

Talking about topics like this is still seen as quite taboo to a lot of people, but pretending like this doesn't happen makes it harder for the problem to be recognised. This book does a great job at highlighting how the issues raised could have an effect on anyone, even those who seem to be doing okay.

Rating a book like this is difficult. It is incredibly well-written, but due to its distressing nature, it's tricky to say it was a 'favourite' read, hence the four stars.

Rating: 8/10

Not long ago, I shared that I was reading My Dark Vanessa, and that post led the author to reach out and ask if I’d be open to reading No Ordinary Love.

What followed was one of the most emotionally jarring and necessary reading experiences I’ve had in a long time. This book shares three real stories that are raw, harrowing, and heartbreakingly true stories of women who have survived what many couldn’t even begin to imagine. BB Gabriel doesn’t just tell their stories; she honors them. She gives voice to pain that so often goes unheard.

There were moments I had to pause and sit with the heaviness. By the final chapter, I was openly sobbing. I messaged the author immediately, and when she told me the last story was entirely real… and that she has video evidence… I was shattered all over again. 😭😭😭

No Ordinary Love is an unputdownable debut novel that delves into the dark realities of intimate partner violence through the stories of three Canadian women: Gabbi, Alex, and Katee. Each storyline gives readers a unique perspective on survival, resilience, and the lasting impacts of abuse. Author B.B. Gabriel, a Canadian social worker and abuse survivor herself, channels her personal experiences into this book. The character and location names have been altered, but much of the story is based on true events she experienced.

Gabbi, a therapist in her late thirties, is determined to share her long-suppressed story in the form of a novel. With her younger sister given a fatal cancer diagnosis, she is desperate to finish her book before time runs out. Alex, a school counselor in her late twenties, grapples with her own trauma from past abuse while helping students. When she starts receiving letters from her abusive ex in prison, she feels threatened again, and her anxiety and panic resurface, affecting her work and personal life. Katee, a high school student, has an unhealthy, dysfunctional relationship with her family. When the family moves to a deadbeat small town, she has a falling out with her mother and moves out. Soon she falls for a seemingly perfect guy, only to discover the nightmare beneath his facade. Their experiences, while distinct, together highlight the insidious nature of intimate partner abuse.

Gabriel’s writing is raw, disturbing, engrossing, and uncluttered. All three narratives of this book perfectly capture the psychological effects of abuse without overdramatizing the victims. The abusers of the women are unnamed, emphasizing that these predators can be anyone and can come from all walks of life. The brutal realities of abuse are not shied away from in this book—instead, they are highlighted with eye-opening details and brutal honesty, making the stories difficult to read and, at the same time, inspiring to see how courageous these women are to break free and heal.

The stories don’t just recount the horrors of abuse the women endure but also highlight the psychological grip their abusers have on them, making their escapes seemingly impossible. There reaches a point in each narrative where each woman finally musters up the courage and strength to fight back, even when the odds are stacked against them. Anyone who’s been a victim of abuse or a witness to someone who’s been abused will find these stories painful, emotionally resonant, and validating. For those who haven't, it's an important read to really understand the psychological impact of coercive control and the strength and resiliency required to survive it and break free!

The stories are fast-paced, unpredictable, and full of raw, disturbing dialogue that is not for the faint of heart. Each story features a first-person POV of the set protagonist—since the three women are all at different stages of their lives (Katee a teen, Alex in her late 20s, and Gabbi in her late 30s), each story brilliantly captures different levels of awareness and wisdom when it comes to abuse and predators. The novel often switches between perspectives just after the most disturbing and unsettling scenes, providing readers both a much-needed “breather” and time to digest what transpired.

The stories of Alex and Gabbi, women who have taken steps to heal from the effects of violence and PTSD, provide hope and inspiration to readers. In contrast, Katee’s story is the most difficult to read. Readers should be prepared for triggering content including grooming, psychological manipulation, and graphic violence. As she’s only a teenager when her abuse story takes place, her story is even more unsettling. Her bad relationship with her mother and her strong desire for independence lead her to some very bad decision-making. After the abuse starts, the psychological grip that her boyfriend has on her is alarming and painful to read. Her journey is not an uphill battle but instead a rollercoaster of abuse that readers will want her to get off of—and just when you think she’s about to break free, she makes more poor decisions, clearly fueled by a warped sense of hope that things will change and the strong psychological grip that her manipulative boyfriend still holds. Her story exposes the darkest horrors of what many women have endured and try to forget but offers peace in knowing that she’s not alone and she survived. Her story comes full circle by the end and includes a very dramatic climax that readers won’t soon forget!

Overall, No Ordinary Love is a gripping and brutally honest novel that offers realistic insight into dysfunctional families, loss, the lasting effects of domestic violence, and the power to break free and heal from dark horrors. The author also brilliantly showcases how easily someone can get caught in an abusive relationship and how hard it is to leave. Knowing that this novel is based on the author's real-life journey makes it even more powerful and thought-provoking. It's a must-read for anyone who has endured abuse, knows someone who has been abused, or who enjoys emotionally resonant stories that demonstrate the resiliency of the human spirit. If all of this sounds intriguing, don’t hesitate to grab a copy of this book—the stories will stay with you!

This book is a powerful and emotionally raw account of three women—Gabby, Alex, and Katee—each navigating the deep scars of abuse, trauma, and survival. Told from different stages of life—Gabby in her late 30s, Alex in her late 20s, and Katee still in her teenage years—their stories illustrate that abuse doesn’t discriminate by age, and neither does the pain it inflicts. What struck me most was the reminder that the effects of domestic and sexual abuse can linger for a lifetime, and finding the courage to escape these situations can be a long, complicated journey.

Katee’s story, in particular, broke my heart. Being the youngest, her pain felt especially crushing, and throughout the book, I found myself wanting to reach into the pages and support her, and the others, in any way I could. These stories show just how easily someone can be manipulated and controlled, even those who are educated and aware. The book highlights the terrifying power abusers can hold, and the deep psychological impact they leave behind.

The bravery of the author—who shares her own true story among these narratives—is astounding. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to not only relive such traumatic events but to then write them down for the world to read. Her courage and honesty deserve recognition. The writing itself is excellent, with a well-crafted balance between the three perspectives. The narration in the audiobook was equally impressive, especially during a particularly emotional scene involving Gabby’s sister’s cancer struggle—it was so vivid and moving, it brought me to tears. The male narrator’s portrayal of the abusers was chilling and effective; it made your blood boil and your fists clench with anger.

This is not a book to read for entertainment. It comes with significant trigger warnings and rightfully so. But it is such an important story. It shatters the myth that leaving an abusive relationship is simple, offering instead a painfully honest look at how manipulation, fear, and emotional entrapment work—even against the strongest, most capable people.
Having read similar stories before, I went in without much hope for a “happy ending.” But despite everything, the resilience these women showed gave me a glimmer of hope. Still, it’s sobering to reflect on what it takes to build that resilience—how it’s often born from extreme suffering. I wish no one, woman or man, ever had to learn resilience through such horrifying experiences.

A heartfelt thank you to the author for sharing her story and offering the audiobook version. I truly urge readers to pick this one up, support her work, and reflect deeply on the realities it reveals. Well done.

Disclosure - I'm the owner/operator of Post Hypnotic Press Inc and we produced the audiobook edition of this book. I'm writing a review because this is a really good book and, I feel, an important book, and I want to support the author.

This is not an easy book. It is a hard hitting book about domestic violence told through three women's stories. The abuser isn't named because, as the author notes, "he could be anybody's tormentor."

The women are at different life stages: a teenager who's being groomed by an abusive boyfriend, a young woman in the grip of a domestic abuser, and a woman in her thirties who is still haunted by the abuse she experienced. This approach has produced a book that is not only very engaging, but also incredibly insightful.

This is a powerful story. The honesty is palpable. BB Gabriel explores the realities of domestic violence: the grooming, the attachment, the slow erosion of a woman's self-esteem and sense of self. She sheds light on the realities of domestic violence and the courage it takes to speak out. It is both painful and empowering. A must-read for anyone who has experienced or wants to understand domestic abuse.

All in all, this is a book that, sadly, far too many women will relate to.

As another reviewer wrote: "it’s not just a story—it’s a call for awareness and change. Highly recommend."

A word about the audiobook. We were thrilled that the author chose us to produce "No Ordinary Love.' The talented Emma Love and Pierre Simpson narrated this book. This isn't a traditional multi-cast book: Emma reads everything but the abuser's part. This novel approach really works! And both Emma and Pierre are great narrators. :) I'll borrow from a customer review on audible (not mine or anyone I know):

"The narration was excellent, heartfelt, vulnerable, yet strong. I felt as if I was listening to an old friend share with me the parts of her life that she had once kept hidden.
If you are a survivor, know someone who is, or a mental health student or professional, this book is a must-have. It is painful but ultimately empowering."

This book should be on high school and college reading lists! If you have or know someone who has experienced abuse, or if you're studying to become a counselor, read or listen to this book!

No Ordinary Love, by BB Gabriel, is a searing memoir that threads together the lives of several women grappling with the many faces of intimate partner violence. Through a braided narrative—alternating between Gabbie, Alex, Katee, and others—the book unveils the terror, trauma, and tangled aftermath of abuse while illuminating slivers of healing and resilience. This story stomps, screams, and weeps across the pages, detailing coercion, fear, childhood confusion, and adult reckoning. Told in raw vignettes and memory-soaked prose, it is not just one survivor’s story—it’s a collective mirror for far too many.

Reading No Ordinary Love shook me. There were moments I wanted to put it down and moments I couldn’t look away. The writing, often poetic and stark, pulled me close enough to feel the fear and the fresh heartbreak. Gabriel doesn't romanticize trauma, and that’s what makes her voice trustworthy. She doesn’t craft her pain into tidy scenes or polished resolutions. Her story spills over in waves—sometimes chaotic, sometimes controlled—and always relatable. The structure, with its shifting timelines and perspectives, felt disorienting at times, but maybe that’s the point. Trauma is disorienting. This book doesn't offer clarity; it offers truth.

I admired the way Gabriel let silence linger in her writing. Some chapters stopped short, leaving me breathless, the same way trauma interrupts a life. And yet, she also knows when to lean in—when to take us all the way through a panic attack, a memory, a phone call no one wants to make. This book isn’t just about surviving abuse. It’s about what comes after—the guilt, the longing, the ghosts that live in your muscles. And somehow, it’s also about love. Love between sisters. Love that fights back. Love that rebuilds.

I’d recommend No Ordinary Love to anyone willing to confront the brutal honesty of what abuse looks like behind closed doors—and what it takes to speak it aloud. It's a gut punch for survivors, advocates, and even bystanders who have wondered, “Why doesn’t she just leave?” This book is for those who stayed. For those who left. And for those who still carry the weight of it all.

This is a gripping and uncompromising novel that offers perspectives on family relationships, losing a loved one and the pervasive impact of domestic violence. This new author has chosen a fast paced and unfiltered style that kept me on the page with only a few breaks that were necessary after some of the intense scenes. In one example, the narrator is taunted while searching for her lost kitten that ends tragically or another in which she is forced to create a performance against her will for a group of men in her apartment. There are several of these kinds of situations in this book that are difficult to read and it is much more so knowing all of these events happened in real life. There are very few 'fade to black' moments that skip over the reality of what she faced. Although the primary antagonist is an unnamed male, there are several characters that fill the novel's world.

Although some truly awful things happen to the main character of this novel, there are is also a family reconciliation and survival narrative that allowed me to continue. We know the author survives and the story of how she escapes her abuser to find her voice and place in the world offers hope to the reader. She includes resources and references for women in abusive relationships, but the reader is left wanting to know some more about how she herself came to a place that she was able to actually write this novel. She should be commended for having the bravery to re-live her experiences in writing this book and baring these both painful and personal parts of her lives with her readers.

Although I haven't written GoodReads reviews before, I felt compelled to post here to recommend this book not only to women and their families that may be impacted by domestic violence but any reader because it is a well written, high quality publication. We should want and expect more from this author.

No Ordinary Love is a book that I knew would be powerful, but I wasn’t prepared for just how deeply it would resonate with me. BB Gabriel masterfully weaves together the real-life stories of three survivors—Gabbi, Alex, and Katee—each at different stages of their journey through domestic abuse. Their stories, though unique, echo the painful reality that so many survivors face: the psychological manipulation, the cycle of fear, and the struggle to break free.

Gabbi’s urgency to share her story before it’s too late, Alex’s desperate need to escape her past as her abuser looms closer, and Katee’s heartbreaking realization that love should never come with violence—each of these narratives pulled me in and didn’t let go. The writing is raw, unfiltered, and deeply moving. Gabriel does not shy away from the horrors of intimate partner violence, yet she also captures the incredible strength of survivors who fight for their freedom, even when the odds are stacked against them.

One of the most powerful aspects of this book is how it highlights the universal nature of abuse. The abuser remains unnamed, a chilling reminder that he could be anyone—a fact that makes these stories even more urgent. Domestic abuse is a silent epidemic, and No Ordinary Love forces the reader to confront the reality that so many live with, often behind closed doors.

For anyone who has experienced abuse, this book may feel like looking into a mirror—painful, but validating. For those who haven’t, it’s an essential read to truly understand the complexity of coercive control and the resilience required to survive it. This book is not just about the darkness of abuse; it’s about the light that comes with reclaiming your life.

BB Gabriel has written something deeply important with No Ordinary Love. It’s more than just a book—it’s a lifeline for survivors and a wake-up call for the world.

A powerful, unforgettable read that stays with you long after the last page.

Holy shit. Speechless. Astounded. Impressed.

In the beginning, I was very confused on the 3 different POV's. Katee's very specifically told the story of her abuser while the others didn't, which I thought was strange. But it was extra strange that only 1 POV mentioned writing a book too. Towards the middle, it was becoming more apparent that this could all just be one story but from different stages, but the names kept confusing me. Obviously by the end, it was confirmed this was all just BB's story. An extremely depressing and awful one at that.

This woman went through so much unimaginable stuff in her life, and at such a young age in front of so many people who could've helped her - but they didn't. What her boyfriend would subject her to was sickening, gut wrenching. I wanted to read it in pieces, take breaks often, but felt it wasn't fair to her. She didn't get to experience it in pieces - she was living it in real time and had to figure out how to survive despite the piece of shit who claimed he loved her. So I stuck through as much as I could. She went through so, so much. She is an insanely strong woman who survived everything despite him and that isn't something everyone can say.

Her story is one that is worth reading, worth telling, worth screaming to the world. How Katee survived so BB could be BB is phenomenal. It's awe-inspiring. I just wish she never had to experience it in the first place, but unfortunately that's not possible. Incredible story showcasing the strength of not only the human body and mind, but of women. Outstanding.

No Ordinary Love by B. B. Gabriel is a heart-wrenching, raw exposé into the facets of domestic violence, the terrors victims endure at the hands of their abusers, and the people around them who allow and reinforce such vicious behaviors. Young Katee’s story pulls back the curtain on the horror of what many women have endured (still endure!) and try to forget, on what our daughters will suffer if we cannot show them grace and grant them safe spaces for growth and expression.

This story is not for the faint of heart, and it will leave you drowning in rage and heartbreak. Yet it is a warning to our younger generations that abuse comes in many forms, and it is our compassion for others that will ultimately end the violence and help us understand that there is no easy escape.

It is in the stories of Alex and Gabbi, the ones who embrace the aftermath of violence and its accompanying PTSD, that the reader finds hope—of women who suffered Katee’s shame and vulnerability, and finally reach back across time to help heal the lost little girl who endured such cruelty.

Katee was never alone, and neither are the thousands of women still suffering, or the daughters who hide their beautiful souls in closets or under blankets in their silent heartbreak. From those who have come before: we see you, and we know your pain. We are always here to safeguard your future. Five stars for an emotional rollercoaster that will continue to pull my heartstrings long after its debut.

Typically, I listen to audiobooks while doing housework, letting the story play as background noise. But reading No Ordinary Love was different. I often found myself stopping, standing still with something in my hands mid-task, completely absorbed in the lives being shared.

Knowing this was a true story made every moment feel more powerful and real. I felt deeply for Katee, Gabbi, and Alex. For their challenges, their resilience, and the way they kept moving forward stayed with me long after I completed the book. There were passages that made my heart ache, others that gave me hope, and many that reminded me of the strength it takes to keep going.

BB Gabriel tells her story with honesty and compassion, allowing the reader to connect not just to the events but to the people behind them. The writing doesn’t sensationalize; instead, it invites you to witness and feel alongside the individuals at the heart of it.

I appreciated how the book highlights the complexities of love, family, and survival in ways that are both heartbreaking and inspiring. It’s not just a story to read, it’s an experience that stays with you. By the end, I felt humbled and grateful to have been allowed a window into her journey.

I’m so proud of BB Gabriel for telling her story and I hope it inspires others who may also find themselves in difficult situations.

I finished this book a couple days ago but I needed to take a couple of days to absorb it and gather my thoughts on this raw, emotional, necessary and poignant read.

We follow the lives of Gabbi, Alex and Katee through their deeply disturbing stories of domestic violence and abuse - stories that shine a light on a topic that many don’t want to hear about. We hear about their isolation, degradation, manipulation, sexual/physical/emotional abuse and loss of self, at the hands of their abusers. But in this, we also hear about their strength, their ability to still see beauty in the world around them and such resilience in the face of unimaginable circumstances. We see the power of love in families and friends, and the power of moving forward and never giving up.

I am so very grateful for having the opportunity to experience this uncensored account in this deeply emotional story. I am grateful for the impact this had on me and how I can become a better listener, a more empathetic professional and a partner in raising awareness. I highly recommend this book - although a difficult read, the profound impact it will have will assist in breaking the silence of domestic violence.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read your story and share with others.

BB Gabriel’s debut No Ordinary Love left me speechless. From the first chapter, I was completely captivated. I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading it in one sitting, only to find myself staring at the wall for several hours afterward.

In just 317 pages, this book manages to both shatter and heal your heart.

No Ordinary Love offers an honest and raw portrayal of surviving domestic violence. I appreciated the way Gabriel wove together different narrators to illustrate the varied and imperfect stages of trauma recovery. Despite the difficult subject matter, Gabriel brings a profound sense of humanity to the story, creating a connection that feels both intimate and meaningful.

What stands out most is the narrator’s incredible resilience. Despite facing unimaginable struggles, the strength she demonstrates throughout is both inspiring and deeply moving.

This novel is not just a captivating read; it is a crucial contribution to the public discourse on domestic violence and is highly relevant to contemporary conversations about trauma, recovery, and societal responsibility.

This was one of the rawest, most honest, and emotionally powerful books I've ever read or listened to. The author shares her story of how she became trapped in a cycle of domestic violence, not just the physical realities, but also the emotional manipulation and slow erosion of her sense of self. She paints such a vivid, human picture of how easy it can be to get caught in an abusive relationship and how hard it is to leave.

What really stood out to me was her honesty about what happens after you escape. She doesn't sugarcoat the lingering trauma, the complicated emotions, or the ways that the past can still reach into the present. It made her story feel even more real and relatable. The narration was excellent; heartfelt, vulnerable, and strong. I felt like I was sitting with an old friend who trusted me enough to share the hardest parts of her life that had once been a secret.

If you are a survivor, know someone who is, or just want to understand more about the realities of domestic violence and recovery, this book is an absolute must-listen. It’s painful, yes, but ultimately empowering.

This book absolutely pulled me in from the first few pages. The way the three stories are woven together makes it impossible not to keep turning the page — you need to know what happens next. What struck me most is how real it feels — and that’s because it is real. It reads like lived experience — raw, heavy, and deeply human. There were moments when I actually had to put the book down just to process what I had read. Some scenes sit with you. They make you pause. They make you breathe differently. It felt like watching a movie play out in my head. I could see it. I could feel it. And as I read, all I wanted to do was reach into the pages and help these women — to protect them, to warn them, to tell them they deserve more. Each woman’s story is different, yet heartbreakingly connected. The book doesn’t just tell stories of abuse — it shows the psychology, the grooming, the fear, the silence, and ultimately the strength it takes to say “no more.” It’s not an easy read, but it’s an important one. It forces you to confront realities that so many women live through quietly. This book stays with you long after you close it.

I just finished this book and I have so many words circulating through my head right now. Heartbroken, shocked, inspired, heard, understood, but most of all: PROUD. I'm proud of this author's progress, I'm proud of her insane writing skills and most of all I'm proud that she took these horrendous, treacherous and downright scarring years and turned them into a work of art. Something that will help so many individuals out there struggling with parallel experiences and also I can't even imagine the lengths as to which it helped her. So if you or anyone you know has or is going through an abusive relationship, or if you simply would like to educate yourself further on the matter, I strongly, STRONGLY recommend this book. It's raw and real and doesn't sugar coat, and takes you through the entire process of what it's like to be in a relationship that hurts you, but how the idea of leaving isn't so easy when you love the person.

How do you review a novelized account of a survivor’s true experience? She didn’t get to choose the story—only how to share it. The characters, the events, the decisions and outcomes, the abuse… This book is her life, and she did an outstanding job putting it into words. It’s engaging, suspenseful, emotional, and real. To the end I was wondering what would happen next and if my theory about the 3 storylines was correct. It keeps you thinking.

“The perfect storm can come for anyone.” Those who’ve suffered abuse will understand, but something I hope others will take away from this book is the importance of being informed and aware about these crimes, watching for signs of trouble, and signaling that we’re there for friends and family if they ever need a lifeline. Also, as Alex’s story demonstrates, we have no idea of the traumas and stress many around us are dealing with. For everyone’s sake, be kind.

I listened to the audiobook, which was outstanding.

No Ordinary Love is so much more than a book — it’s a courageous, soul-baring gift to women everywhere who have experienced the pain of abuse. Knowing that this is based on the author’s real-life journey makes it even more powerful. BB Gabriel’s ability to share her truth with such vulnerability and compassion moved me to my core.

The stories of Gabbi, Alex, and Katee are woven together in a way that shows the many layers of trauma, survival, and ultimately — strength. Each woman’s voice felt real and relatable, and I saw parts of myself and people I love in their journeys.

This book doesn’t shy away from the darkness, but it shines a fierce light on the path to healing and self-worth. It’s a must-read for anyone who has walked through abuse, worked in the field of trauma recovery, or simply wants to understand the human spirit more deeply.

Thank you, BB Gabriel, for your bravery. Your words will change lives.

BY @no.ordinary.love_bb.gabriel

Three women share their authentic stories of survival against intimate partner violence.
Gabbi, a therapist in her late thirties, wants her family to know her true experiences.
Alex, a school counselor in her late twenties, seeks safety while navigating her clients' traumas.
Katee, a high school student, falls prey to an abusive boyfriend. Their struggles echo the experiences of domestic violence survivors worldwide.
MY REVIEW
This book captivated me with its distinctive narrative, vivid storytelling, and brutal honesty. The author did an amazing job, providing hope to those who need it. The story is a hard but necessary read, and its impact is profound. I couldn't stop listening to the audiobook version.

No Ordinary Love is a brave, heartfelt, and deeply personal novel that gives voice to the silent wounds so many survivors carry. BB Gabriel writes with raw honesty and emotional precision, drawing from lived experience to craft a story that feels both intimate and universal.

The characters are rich and real, their struggles explored with compassion and nuance. Gabriel doesn’t shy away from the complexities of trauma, love, and recovery, she sits with them, honors them, and invites the reader to do the same.

This is more than a novel, it’s an act of advocacy. For readers who long to feel seen, or who value truth-telling through fiction, No Ordinary Love is a powerful, affirming, and necessary read.

this book gave me some uneasy nostalgia to some similar experience I've had in relationships, which I think drives home the point that the events in this book can happen to everyone. it was super engaging, and as much as it reminded me of the bad it also helped me a lot to recognise the personal progress, and I could see all the ways that helped me stick it through and root for the main characters to save themselves from their personal situations. there were a few parts that were overly described for my liking, just things I didn't think warranted a step by step process written out; at times that over description made the flow a bit clunky for me, but I binged the majority of the book in ~3 days.

I was hooked from the first page, very quickly transported into the life of the characters.
Each character storyline is so carefully written out, the picture it paints is both beautiful and heartbreaking.
Relating to each characters story in different moments of strength, fear, courage and sorrow. I cried with sadness, and also with pride of how their strength and determination got them through!
Vince is more than just a Viking in shining armour, he’s her strong supported shadow. Proactively protecting. I’ll be telling everyone to read this, and will have my daughters read it when they become teens.

I laughed. I cried. I wanted to throw things.

Gritty. Honest. Heartbreaking. Infuriating. Triumphant.

I cannot begin to explain my anger when I read every page concerning the boyfriend. Love bombing, grooming, manipulation, graphic violence. He is an abomination.

As opposed to the five stages of grief, No Ordinary Love covers the three stages of healing. I love the plot twist at the end and I read those last few pages three times!

If you are a survivor, you will find peace knowing that you’re not alone. If you have not experienced abuse, this book will speak to you and you will understand why you must believe survivors.

Three women share their stages of survival through domestic violence. Gabbi, in her late thirties, a therapist, is writing her story so that her family knows what she has endured. Katee a high school student falls for the dream guy who controls. manipulates and abuses her. Alex in her late twenties, a school councilor, mentors her students but starts receiving letters from her ex from jail.

A very powerful and insightful recount of the traumas from the verbal, physical and emotional abuse from DV. Extremely well written that carries the reader through the pain and journey to towards new beginnings.

This book truly hit home for me. The stories about domestic violence and abuse were deeply moving and raw, and I found myself connecting with the writer on such a personal level. The author’s ability to portray the emotions and struggles of those affected by these experiences is remarkable. It’s a heart-wrenching yet necessary read, offering both hope and understanding. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an honest, thought-provoking perspective on these sensitive topics. The writer’s voice is both powerful and empathetic, making this book impossible to put down!!
