John Futterknecht and Marty Seldman’s "Leading the Global Matrix: Proven Skills & Strategies to Succeed in a Collaborative World" puts forth many ideas, among them a comprehensive vision for 21st century corporate and business structure. Futterknecht is a renowned leadership development trainer and executive coach with over five hundred one-on-one coaching sessions and over one thousand training programs to his credit. He has considerable experience working with leaders from the world’s largest corporations. Seldman is an executive coach as well, a corporate trainer, and organizational psychologist. He has made his mark as an executive coach for over thirty years and his long service in the role undoubtedly strengthens the book’s point of view. It isn’t the first book for either man and they teamed once before with the publication of "Customer Tells: Delivering World Class Customer Service by Reading Your Customer’s Signs and Signals".

The systematic manner of their analysis extends to the book’s construction as well. "Leading in the Global Matrix" includes ten chapters defined by their unwavering focus and organizational excellence. There is no wasted motion with how they assemble this book. Futterknecht and Seldman marshal their data and personal experiences with an eye towards making an irrefutable case for readers and succeed. The introduction sets the stage for everything that follows by defining terms and the proverbial lay of the land for novice readers but even those familiar with the subject matter will not find this necessary grounding in the subject to be a waste of time. The seamless co-authorship of the book makes it a fluid and satisfying reading experience from the outset.

Their observations about how corporate structures are undergoing a major reshuffle during this period moving from the traditional hierarchical model towards the matrix style where cross-functional components of the business work across a number of units makes it clear from the first what the crux of the book is. They identify the central challenges to pulling off this transition and prescribe remedies but never in a heavy handed or hectoring way. One of the book’s preeminent virtues is the obvious desires of its authors to be of genuine assistance to their readers. They aren’t here to wag a figurative finger and shame interested parties into following their path.

There is a healthy amount of research reinforcing the author’s observations as they spend the aforementioned ten chapters setting out a path for decision makers to implement the matrix organizational style. Despite the presence of the research, however, a single cohesive voice dominates the book. Futterknecht and Seldman’s observations are the marquee attraction drawing readers to this text and they never disappoint. They focus on the language of their respective fields but the terminology is readily comprehensible. Many strengths distinguish Leading in the Global Matrix, but the accessibility of the prose ranks high among them.

"Leading the Global Matrix: Proven Skills & Strategies to Succeed in a Collaborative World" will enjoy continued relevance for many years to come. Moreover, a single reading doesn’t exhaust its utility. It’s a volume readers can return to over time and discover new ideas and perspective to attack the challenges modern corporate organizations poses for leaders. Futterknecht and Seldman score in a big way with the publication of this book.

Required reading for work. Smart, common sense, organizational planning. I’ll add a star if it works with actual humans.
