WRONG NUMBER is full of weird tales that delve into the darkest depths of your imagination. Unsettling stories of bizarre dreams, cursed objects, and eldritch landscapes fill the pages.
I'm Cliff Hamrick, an author of fiction and non-fiction. My storytelling journey began when I was nine years old and started playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends. We were too young to understand the rules, but the seed of telling exciting stories with characters that grew and developed over time was planted.
I began writing my own fiction as a way to tell stories in the genres that I love to read: fantasy, horror, and science fiction. My biggest influences are the 'weird' scifi and sword & sorcery stories from R.E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, E.R. Burroughs, and R.W. Chambers.
My non-fiction is related to my career as a counselor. Not only do I have a Masters of Arts in Counseling, but also a Masters of Science in Biology. My first career was in biology where I taught at Baylor University as well as worked on various textbooks.
I still work as a counselor in private practice in Austin, TX where I work with clients struggling with addictions, depression, and anxiety. My interests are as varied as my background. I love the outdoors and hiking in one of the greenest cities in the state. I stay active by practicing yoga multiple times a week. But, I also enjoy visiting the gun range and shooting small bits of lead through pieces of paper.

I enjoyed this small horror collection a whole lot, since it's brimming with creepiness, nastiness, and passion for the weird! It's just five stories, written very competently, a couple of them quite original in fact (which in this day and age is an achievement in itself!).
The author brings his own experiences as a counselor, and, to be honest, for me that also brought a refreshing perspective on weird fiction and its workings, since the horror and the weirdness grow organically out of seemingly innocuous daily experiences; I think this is the best way to make the story feel realistic and the writing compelling.
My favorites were the opening story, "The Signal," about a jaded counselor who shows ingenuity in dealing with a problematic client - the story's creepiness can't be understated and the whole theme of "the creepy patient" is handled marvelously; "School Play," a cosmic horror tale with strong Lovecraftian overtones, its narrator a collector of old VHS tapes, who discovers the recording of a play about Carcosa (IYKYK); and the titular "Wrong Number," another tale inspired by the author's counselor days, this time about a client who gets mysterious calls for years; she's recorded them, and the counselor decides to listen to one - big mistake!
Overall, this is a very entertaining weird fiction collection, and I for one am looking forward to the possibility of another similar work by the author.
