Loss. Love. Legacy.
Those three words stood out as I began and finished this book.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Raymond Sellers always looked out for everyone, especially his mother and little brother, Jimmie, after his dad left them. Wanting to be different than his harsh and stubborn father, Raymond makes sure Jimmie stays out of trouble and dreams of being a husband and father one day. That wish comes true when he falls in love with Evelyn, who has a wary outlook on fathers and military men. When 1944 comes around, Lieutenant Sellers has to leave his pregnant wife for the battlefield, later facing the painful decision of either returning to his wife and baby or being there for the men and brothers-in-arms that he swore to fight with and protect.
Ugh! My heart! My soul! 😭😭
When I tell you that this story wrecked me, I’m not exaggerating. I laughed like a dummy. I smiled like a fool. I cried like a baby. Heck, I couldn’t even fall asleep because the ending was just berating my mind. 😅 What makes it worse is that it is based on a true story. That’s when you know it will rip your heart out and break it in two. I don’t think a book has ever made me feel this way.
I have no complaints, other than the fact that I can’t stop thinking about it and want to cry. 😅 (As a side note, this story has several points of view, so if you’re not into that, there’s your heads-up.) ☺️👍
For some reason, three movies came to mind while I read this book. Raymond reminded me of George Bailey from “It’s a Wonderful Life” (one of the greatest movies out there, by the way) due to his selflessness and eagerness to help others, and Desmond Dos from “Hacksaw Ridge” because of his faith, loyalty, and bravery. Some of the story/plot reminded me of “We Were Soldiers,” a film based on a true story during the Vietnam War. This book doesn’t try to sugarcoat the realities of war and the sacrifices of both the men fighting and the ones they leave behind.
Raymond was an awesome character: kind, trustworthy, loyal, virtuous, and funny. I rooted for him the whole way through. (Is it possible to fall in love with a fictional character?) Jimmie was everything you expect in a mischievous little brother and I enjoyed his point of view and their relationship a lot. I resonated with Evelyn a lot and, at first, you think it might not work out between her and Raymond, but faith and trust had to be a huge shoulder for them to lean on. The camaraderie between Raymond and his men (Mitt is the best!) was so fun to read and their loyalty to one another touched my heart. ❤️🩹
And the ending! Oh👏 My 👏 Gosh 👏 I cannot express how much I tried not to sob so I wouldn’t wake my family up. Emerson Ford is an incredible writer if she got that many tears out of me, lol! 😂
Brilliant descriptions, fun dialogue, and wonderful writing. This story moved me and I am so glad I had the privilege to read such a powerful and amazing story. It shows how many unknown heroes and stories there are from, not just WW2, but from every war that’s been fought. May their deaths never be in vain. May we show gratitude to those who came back and were scarred physically, mentally, or emotionally forever. May we always remember what they were fighting for and for who. 🫡

This gripping WWII histfic tale kept me up late reading as my tears mingled with joy. A soul-searing look at the war in the Pacific AND the home front, and a story I will never forget. (Make sure to read the author's inspiration for the book.) Unputdownable!

This was a character driven story of the sacrifices our military men and women make for the freedoms we have. I enjoyed the fact that this is based on a true story, that the family involved resided in South Carolina and that the Pacific front of WWII was the focus. I feel like the market has been flooded the last few years with WWII story’s focused mainly on the German front and that the Pacific front to a much lesser degree.
This story was truly amazing as was the audio production. Highly, highly recommend.

There are some books you pick up, decide to read on one of those 'lull' days, and then they sit with you, in your brain, in your heart, for a long time afterwards. This is one of those books!
This is the first historical fiction book I have read that felt real, more personable. It brought to light the actual human experiences of WW2, not only on the front line but to those left behind. Waiting for news, waiting and hoping for their return.
Brothers Raymond and Jimmie are about to be separated for the first time in their lives. Raymond, to spare his brother from his father's plans, is off to war, leaving behind his new bride and unborn child.
Whilst Raymond is fighting the war from the ground, it's not long before Jimmie has signed up and is fighting in the skies.
This was a tale that was full of raw emotion. As a wife and mother, the realisation that it actually wasn't that long ago that my family could have been torn apart was real. This book brought those feelings to the forefront.
A heart wrenching tale that showcases those who fought, those who never returned, those who returned but were never the same and those who tried to carry on whilst silently praying their loved ones would one day walk through the door.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for some time now. I’m so glad I finally did! It’s a story that I won’t soon forget. The book is set in the WWII era, yet it has a more unique setting than I often see. It takes place primarily in the Pacific theater, in Pearl Harbor and Guam.
The story begins with
Two brothers growing up in South Carolina. Their father is tough on them, and they rely on one another. Raymond is the older brother and Jimmie looks up to him for support. Before long they will both go to war.
Evelyn’s father abandoned her when she was young, and she has never gotten over it. She meets Raymond at a dance when she is only 14. A few years later, they reconnect, but she’s wary of committing to a military man.

This Debut shook me. My heart went on a journey and it was wonderful. The audio kept me so engaged, and the story was unique, tender and incredibly thoughtful.

I came home from Disney World to this book and had to read it right away! I'm SO glad I did because it was phenomenal! It's a debut, and it's inspired by the true story of the author's family! This book is most definitely a must-read!
Raymond and Jimmie Sellers are brothers but also the best of friends. It's 1944, and they're both shipping out to the Pacific. Raymond went to Clemson and is an Army officer while Jimmie enlisted in the Navy and chose to be a gunner on a plane. Raymond leaves behind his pregnant wife Evelyn, the love of his life, the one he fought for. Evelyn has decided to live with Raymond's mother, Sarah, while he's deployed. Evelyn was afraid to love Raymond, knowing he would be shipping out soon, but she couldn't fight what her heart wanted.
This was such a riveting, thought-provoking, emotional read, and it seriously broke me! It's a remarkable heartbreaking love story, a story about family, and a story about the tough decisions a soldier has to make. I loved the multiple POVs and the settings of "back home" in SC and in the Pacific. I loved reading from the soldiers' perspectives during their fight and Sarah's on the homefront. I could definitely relate to Sarah since I was a Marine wife. This was so well written and well researched! It was truly an incredible read, and I HIGHLY recommend! Don't forget to read the author's notes🩷

What The Silent Say is a beautiful and resilient story with a fresh take on a WW2 setting. This is a quiet kind of story that exudes personal strength. It is told from multiple POV's of ordinary people caught in hard times.
Based on a true story of the authors grandfather, it follows main characters Jimmie, Raymond and Evelyn from the start of the war to the end. I loved seeing the many perspectives and personalities as they each struggle with challenges of their own and figure out what it means to be brave.
I really thought it was a unique insight that while the war might have been ending in Europe, they were still in the thick of it over in Japan. The camaraderie created by the side characters was also a strong point of the novel as a I fell in love with these men and women as well.
There are themes of grace, and stepping up and doing what is right. I adored the light veins of Christianity and how faith propelled them to keep going one more day. This is a book that will tug at your heart strings and put you back to together in the end, but you might shed a tear or two along the way.
The writing was rich and immersive and wholesome. I truly loved the story from start to finish and I will definitely be reading whatever this author writes next. (which lucky for me she just released a new book)

I don't usually gravitate towards books on war, but after reading the blurb to What The Silent Say, I figured I'd give it a shot, and I am so glad I did. This is a 5 star read! It is not solely about war and battle during WWII. It is multi-layered and gives us just enough of everything that can make a book perfect. Yes, it's a book of two brothers and their experience while at war, but it heavily focuses on love. It also focuses on the importance of finding said love, taking risks, forgiveness, the internal battle to do what is right, morality, redefining oneself, finding oneself again, dealing with heartache and grief, and more. It's such a well-developed book with well-crafted writing and a beautiful plot that only thickens and weaves together so nicely by the end. "Mip", my goodness! Absolutely loved! His development was beautiful to read. I loved Evelyn as well, and I thought her character was 100% relatable. As a mother, we've all been there. She's trying, even with her husband being at war and the distance between them. And then to have that love ripped away from her.. my heart cried for that woman. This story is full of ups and downs, with Raymond being that beacon of sunlight through it all, even after his death. Please read this book. Even if it's not your typical genre, I promise you you'll feel something by the end of it. Absolutely wonderful! 5+ stars!

So many WWII era books I have read. Yet, this one hit so close to home. The men who never returned. The families left behind to pick up the pieces. The men who did return. The men who didn't talk about their time during the war. Like my father-in-l aw who served in the South Pacific, the arena for this WWII saga.
What the Silent Say by Emerson Ford was exactly what I expected. A gut-wrenching, heart-ripping story that you couldn't miss a single word yet riveting enough to want you speeding through the pages.
Have your tissues ready because this did not disappoint.

WWII account with well-developed characters, excellent storytelling, and a great audiobook narrator. Very readable and helped me understand more about the war progression in the Pacific areas of Okinawa and Guam. Not a light topic, but it is well-written and balances the bitter with the sweet.
I saw this book to compared to the books written by Kristin Hannah and Amy Harmon. I don’t really see that connection, as this story doesn’t center around a strong female main character and the writing style isn’t the same. However, it’s still a great historical fiction novel.
No language or spice. Kisses only. Some war violence but not gruesome or gory. Heavy themes related to war.

Where do I even begin with this beautiful story? Raymond. Let’s begin with Ray.
Raymond Sellers is a protective older brother, smart & kind, full of heart & brave! He is the core of this story. Him and the men who fought in the 77th Division.
Then we have Jimmie, Raymond’s younger brother. Impulsive and tender hearted, rowdy and soft to those who love him fervently, rebellious with a heart of gold. Jimmie was such a wonderful character & my heart broke for him so many times reading this book.
Then we have Evelyn. Oh Evelyn how I so wanted to reach through time and give her the biggest hug! Seeing what she went through, at a young age and then through the years, she too broke my heart but also mended it. It’s wild to me, how we as women can connect with another woman no matter how long time has passed.
There is another character I would love to talk about but I’m going to keep them a secret! It’ll make the story just that more impactful!
This book was deeply romantic and incredibly moving! It’s always so beautiful to me, especially as a fellow writer, when you find stories of real people, but the ones no one knows. The silent ones.

I love stories that take us back to eras like this, allowing us to walk in the footsteps of ordinary (and often unsung) heroes—men like our grandfathers, uncles, and brothers.
What a story! Even more powerful is it’s inspired by true events and the author’s own family. Many of the letters included are word for word from the real ones! 💌
I appreciated the story beginning before the war, giving readers time to truly know the brothers and see them grow. And Raymond and Evelyn’s love story? Incredibly sweet and wholesome, yet not without its share of heartbreak. Their love, captured in letters and longing, is one for the ages.
The novel is beautifully researched, immersing you in a simpler yet deeply challenging time. It also features a full cast of endearing supporting characters—many of them men Raymond served with—whose camaraderie and sacrifice make the story even richer.
And fair warning: The emotional weight of war, love, and loss lingers is heavy at times. Stories like this remind us of the sacrifices our veterans made and ensure their legacy lives on.

I'm waffling between 3 & 4 stars.
One one hand this book was a beautiful tale of brothers who embark on their own paths of bravery during wartime. It was sweet & lovely & had beautiful elements of Christianity.
On the other hand, it was slow. And it was kinda boring.
Ultimately it did make me teary eyed and had me feeling lots of emotions so I'll go with 3.75 stars, rounded up to 4.
I liked it, I didn't love it. But it's the time of book that makes you feel like a bit of a jerk for saying such a thing, if you know what I mean?

I’m a sucker for historical fictions. Raymond & his younger brother Jimmy live with their single mother after their dad left. Their father is still very controlling about their futures regardless of his presence in their life. As the oldest brother, Raymond takes over the role of his father within his household l. I am so thankful for the Facebook group that brought me to Emerson Ford and this fresh take on the events of WW2. There are so many books written on this subject and What The Silent Say stands like a beacon among them. Emerson’s experience as a military wife really comes through in her writing, giving an emotional depth to her characters that is rare in contemporary fiction. I will be thinking about this book for years to come and telling everyone I know to read it. I can’t wait to read what she writes next.

Suffice it to say that any book that brings me to tears several times is likely to obtain a five-star rating from me.
I went into this book with no expectations. The cover attracted me and, I admit, whomever wrote the blurb for the book did a good job; it sounded like the kind of historical fiction that I might like. However, quite honestly, I was a bit concerned that there were be gory battle scenes which I do not have the stomach for, since it was written by a man. Despite my reservations, I decided to submit my request to NetGalley and I am glad I did. I am sure that this will be on my top ten for the year.
The author creates very likeable characters, with flaws. However, the main protagonists are the kind of people that I would want to meet and he really gets inside their head. The author also has a story to tell. While I love character driven novels, sometimes I want a strong story to go along with it.
We meet Evelyn, who falls in love with Raymond despite her best efforts. She does not want to start a life with a man who is about to go off to war and there are many reasons for that which I will not spoil here. Nonetheless, she does and the author manages to create a wonderful romance between the two that does not become maudlin. Raymond goes off to war, leaving his new bride and his little brother behind. This story is so rich, not only with compelling characters, but with relationships and events, bringing in vivid, but not gory details of being at war in a foreign country.
I fell in love with these characters and so, when sad things happened, I was brought to tears. That is all I will say here, except that you should read this. Everybody should read this, whether you are young or old, male or female. There is something here for everyone. In fact, there is so much to unpack in this novel that I may need to reread it.
I am also upset that this is the author's only novel although I do look forward to future ones which will become must-reads for me.

While "What the Silent Say" is a powerful, loving, heartbreaking account of war, it is also based on a true story that the author uncovered as a teenager. She learned about her father, his actions in WWII, about the men with whom he served, and the story of those who stayed behind, the wives and families of the men.
Using this foundation, Ford created a story that rings true and honest. It's about what you plan to do with your life, and how you deal with what life gives you. It's about the horrors of war, the absolute bond formed by those men who have served, and how you don't always fight for the larger purpose - you fight for the men who serve by your side.
I cannot recommend this book enough. 5 stars.

I had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of this book, and I’m completely in love. Every chapter masterfully delivers a blend of suspense, heartfelt moments, and vivid historical details that will leave any WWII or historical fiction fan utterly captivated. Raymond, Jimmy, Evelyn, and the unforgettable Mitch (what a spicy meatball!) stole my heart right from the beginning. This story made me laugh, cry, and fall head over heels for Emerson, whose perspective brings the tale to life in the most compelling way. A truly unforgettable read that will stay with me for years to come! I cannot wait to see what this budding author brings in the years to come.

In this unique and fascinating multiple perspective World War II historical fiction novel, readers follow Evelyn and her husband Lieutenant Raymond Sellers as their relationship grows in 1944 South Carolina only for them to be separated by his deployment to the Pacific theater. Forced to choose between his family back home and his brothers in arms in the Pacific, Raymond and his brother Jimmie fight two very different battles while Evelyn deals with her own battles with pregnancy and new motherhood on her own back in South Carolina. Bringing two very different environments and a wide cast of characters to life, this novel is complex, emotional, and remarkably cinematic in its detail and scope. The characters and their relationships with each other are the real stars of the novel, while the historical detail and setting really bring the story, characters, and conflicts to life. Intense and emotional, Ford has done a fantastic job humanizing the characters and making readers emphasize with them and their struggles, all of which makes this a fantastic, detailed, and immersive read. Well-written and full of brilliant historical details, this atmospheric and powerful new World War II historical fiction novel is a must-read for fans of the genre.

Raymond is a very positive influence in her life and loves her unconditionally. When she gives birth to their child while Raymond is away at war, she is supported by Raymond’s mother in some very heartfelt scenes.

It’s an incredibly well-written story of hope, devotion, and love. Inspired by a true story of her Grandpa and great uncle, Emerson Ford takes you back in time.
As a military wife I felt the heart break of watching my husband leave just days after our son was born. It was 7 months before we were back together. I am thankful for our digital age that we were able to still email on occasion.

Wow...I just finished this and absolutely loved it. It melted my heart, in some parts, and I cried a bucket of tears in others.
The author based this story on the letters written by her great-Uncle Raymond to his brother, Jimmie, who was Emerson Ford's grandfather.
These beautiful people actually lived, and it strengthens my faith in our divine creation.
The story takes place in South Carolina, the Philippines, and Okinawa. The battle sequences are detail, and move fast, like you are experiencing them in real time. The emotions are raw, and believable.
Evelyn is beautifully written. She touched me, because it gave me a glimpse of what my own mother must have experienced as a young bride, then, new mother whose husband was deployed during WWII.
Emerson Ford joins the ranks of Kristin Hannah, Kelly Rimmer, Kate Quinn, and Rebecca Yarros as a premiere historical fiction writer.

I know the market is saturated with World War II books, but I think this one is worth your time. It focuses primarily on the war efforts in Guam and the role the US soldiers played. I didn’t know anything about this aspect of WWII. It was so heartbreaking and intriguing.
The story focuses on two brothers. From the moment talk of the US entering the war began, I was worried. Would they both join? Would they both make it out alive if they did? I was so engrossed in their lives and the choices they made.
I also found myself attached to many of the side characters. While their lives weren’t the main focus, the men’s bravery and brotherhood touched my heart. The female characters also showed great courage as they struggled on the home front.
What made this story even more poignant was knowing that the events and letters throughout the book were taken from the author’s family history. This made the difficulties faced even more impactful.
This is a story of love, sacrifice, bravery, and courage. I highly recommend reading this even if you feel over saturated by WWII books.
