I absolute love the adventurous and hazardous journey this couple puts on this self help book. They prove that following Jesus with all your heart is all you want and more. I would highly recommend this book to anyone

As Christians, we often settle down in comfortable mediocrity. We stay in the safe zone and don’t try to push past what is necessary. Yet our God is a God of impossibilities. He is our guide into the endless frontier of the Christian adventure. Will we follow? Or have we forgotten that we are to be pilgrims?
When God Writes Your Life Story is one of the handful of books that have had a huge impact on my life. I love it because it got me excited about my faith. The authors encourage the reader to realize just how big God is. Living in obedience to Him can be absolutely breathtaking. When insist on holding the pen and sitting on the throne of our lives, we won’t be happy. But when we surrender the pen to God and let Him write the story, amazing things are right around the corner. Of course, it won’t always be easy. We are warned that in this world we will have tribulation, but God has promised that he has overcome the world.
The God of the Universe wants to write your life story. And when He does, you mustn’t expect a mediocre tale.

This is book is a sequel of sorts to Eric and Leslie Ludy’s popular book, When God Writes your Love Story, which talks about surrendering your ideas and pursuits of romance to God and trusting him to satisfy your dreams and desires.
This book is centered around that same idea, but instead of only talking about one aspect of your life, it centers around your whole life. It struggles with the age old questions, “Who am I?” and “What am I here for?” Honestly at times I had to put this book down and pray over some of the concepts because there are hard, hard truths written in these pages.
Believing in Jesus costs us nothing, but truly following him costs us everything from removing distractions, shaking off our “settler” mentality, disciplining our bodies, minds and souls and developing Godly habits. It’s a book I will definitely keep on my shelf and re-read because the truths and challenges in it are timeless and so important to remind yourself of.

Overall, there are some good points and assertions. BUT this book has not aged well. I think it could be updated/revised and be a solid read. However, though this book is not for me, it is clear by other reviews that it has been a blessing to many. As with all books, reading is subjective. With that said, it is important to utilize discernment when selecting books as well as when reading (including nonfiction and inspirational titles).
There’s some good tidbits, including messaging that to be a Christian is to actively pursue Christ rather than completing a checklist of performative actions. I really liked the point “heroic Christians are those who don’t just believe the right things, but do the right things as a result of their beliefs” (p. 119). On the other hand, I found myself disappointed with the redundancy, contradicting points, and several of the implications of the text.
The first 100 pages reiterates what seems to be the crux of the entire book without much substance: one has to completely give him/herself to Christ and stop being a Christian in name only—which seems like unnecessary advice to the average Christian as being a Christian implies one has given their life to God? Yes, part of the Christian walk is pursuing to be more Christ-like and to be transformed by walking with Him, but the bridge between this and living an adventurous life authored by God is rickety at best. Further, though this is such an important concept (not having shallow faith), the overall delivery only offers a surface level view (ironically enough).
In truth, what the back cover blurb summarizes isn’t what the book offers—there isn’t a clear, succinct thesis or argument on HOW one embraces living an adventurous life authored by God (outside of having faith). The text provides anecdotes and generalizations and even contradictions. One such contradiction is in part one; the authors assert that talents and personal likes have nothing to do with God’s purpose for our lives. Then, several pages later, they instruct readers to pursue passions such as mentoring or volunteering as they try to listen to God’s direction.
Instead of using Scripture to give means for how said person could live an adventurous life for God, there’s numerous references to missionaries and martyrs and encouragement to just trust God “fully”—the implication being that if you are believing “enough” life will be just fine. For example:
“When we abide in Christ, all the other pieces of our life supernaturally fall in place” (p. 83).
“When you build your life around His perfect peace, nothing will be able to shake you again” (p. 177).
These can be quite encouraging on the surface, but, at worst, can be misleading. John 16:33 tells us directly that the world will bring trouble—“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The book’s text, with quick encouragement that is not consistently rooted in biblical context, creates a strange image of the Christian walk. An image that is made all the stranger with continual references that imply to live for God is only found in global missions.
In fact, it isn’t until the second half of the book that there is any wording to suggest that one could be called somewhere locally rather than entering mission work when surrendering fully to God’s will (the authors include working on Wall Street as one of the quick examples). And, despite saying God will direct your paths if you allow Him to, the authors only once mention the practice of discernment and they simply define it rather than use the term—discernment should be front and center rather than simply telling readers if they trust fully, then they’ll have clear direction.
The final section of the book includes several questions (multiple pages) to identify how one sins (the question “have I ever become romantically attached in an emotionally controlling manner to someone other than my fiance or spouse” literally made me want to throw the book….the wording is abysmal and implies emotional control is okay if married or committed to being married…)
I did like the mentions of Amy Carmichael—I read a biography and did a report on her when in elementary school and I remember loving it. To the book’s credit, I do want to add more biographies, specifically of Christian leaders and missionaries, to my TBR now.

This book deepens your comprehension of the basics and certainly will broaden your understanding of how to live a God-fueled, God-blessed, God-written life. Some of the major topics are intimacy with Christ, being spiritually available, surrender, priorities, goals & habits, life purpose, cleansing from sin, and much more. Ultimately, you are presented with the notion of a life sold-out for Christ, and the choice of how to spend your days is up to you.
Side note — if you desire to attend Ellerslie Discipleship Training (the Colorado-based ministry Eric & Leslie gave up speaking around the world for) but can’t quite find the timing or finances for yet, this book is a fantastic first-step for you. The concept of the “endless frontier” is throughout this book + is a key element in Ellerslie semesters as well. If you aren’t ready to devote 5 weeks to intensive discipleship, this book is a great alternative or additional resource before/afterward.

In true Ludy fashion, this book promotes a sold-out, radical, committed Christian life and encourages self-evaluation to forsake any sin or obstacle that may be holding us back from the life of freedom and fruitfulness God intends for us. Definitely only for those that are wanting to take their relationship with God to the next level. Inspiring and thought-provoking!

I love books written by the Ludy's. They are relatable and practical yet grounded in biblical truth. This book is full of challenges to live life beyond the mediocre, to live a life that God has called us to live. I was challenged to do a lot of introspection in reading this, and as a result I put it aside a number of times as it got a little too intense, only to pick it up again knowing that what I was reading was good for me. One aspect in the book that challenged me was to read biographies of great men and women of God from history, and I followed their recommendations in picking up a few new bios. Highly recommended for anyone in their 20s or 30s.

Another great one by the Ludy's. I have enjoyed everyone of their books. In When God Writes Your Life Story, the authors seek to provide the reader with essentially a guide through allowing God to work in your life moving forward.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants more from their life. Every page spoke to me. their writing style was engaging with lots of stories and illustrations. They speak from experience.
