Cathlyn Collis knew what had happened only from the yellowed clippings..the picture of herself- a glassy eyed twelve year old-kneeling in a pool of blood in a house of the dead..the headlines that screamed ANOTHER LIZZIE BORDEN?

But she could not remember what had happened on that terrible night eighteen years ago. Nor could she rid herself of the feeling that someone or something sinister was always near... watching... waiting...

And now fate had brought puzzle master Hugh Bonnecourt to help her. He was determined to confirm her innocence. But could he? What waited for her at the edge of memory? Would it release her or trigger a deeper terror..a nightmare from which there would be no awakening?

Hugh Bonnecourt's mother dies and leaves him a cardboard box, among other things. In the box he finds a diary and newspaper clippings about murders that happened eighteen years ago. Hugh's curiosity makes him seek out Cathlyn Collis. She was the only survivor in the house and some even suspected she was another Lizzie Borden. But Cathlyn has no memories of that night. In fact, she can't remember anything before the tragedy.

I got this book when I was searching for another. This book sounds very close to the one I'm looking for but not quite. Although, it's not classified as a romance, there is. It felt a little dated at times but it didn't bug me at all. The villain wasn't hard to guess but it was still interesting to see how it played out.

I remember this Lizzie-Borden esque tail being very good-- was recently reminded of it when I read We Have Always Lived in the Castle....
