From small-town Western romance author, Greta Rose West, comes a steamy and heartwarming love story, the sixth book in the Wisper Dreams Series, Roads Behind Us. Grab a fan and a hankie, and get ready to fall in love with sexy single dad, Bax Lee, and the grumpy woman who starts his heart again, Sweetie Baker...
Who knew one game of Texas Hold ’Em and a bottle of gin could seal two strangers’ fates?
Bea Baker walked away from a dead-end marriage. She hasn’t had a family to speak of since her dad passed, but whether she knows it or not, a family’s what she’s been searching for. When Brand Lee hired her as his right hand at Lee Construction, she was grateful for his faith in her. To prove it, she takes her job seriously, which earned her the nickname Sweetie, but spoiler alert: she’s a hard ass. Screw her southern upbringing.
Bea says what she means, and none of it’s sweet.
When she finds herself in her boss’s hometown of Wisper, Wyoming, running multiple projects for Lee Construction, Bea’s smacked in the face with all the family she could ever want. And at the head of that family is the same guy she decimated in a game of poker one sultry summer night forever ago.
Baxton Lee has his hands full with a teenage daughter and too many memories of the past and all the things he lost. He used to be a farmer. Now he’s a rancher and a new business owner. He’s also a single dad and a widower who guards his heart like Fort Knox. And when he goes and gets his leg broken by a rowdy bull, he’s stuck in a cast, watching the world pass him by and remembering the life he used to have.
Until his brother’s forewoman shows up to help build the new Lee Valley rental cabins. Bold and unapologetic Sweetie knocks Bax right back down in the dirt, takes his breath away, and offers him hope for the future.
Too bad she’s off limits.
Bax can’t afford to love anyone but his daughter anyway. Why go looking for something that could be ripped away at any moment? But when it lands in his lap, Bax has to figure out whether to continue protecting his heart, or if he should let it grow bigger and give it away.
Join Bax and Bea in the best small town west of the Mississippi, and you might find yourself falling in love too. Roads Behind Us, the sixth book in the Wisper Dreams series, is a tale of two lost souls looking for a place to belong again. Throw in a hopeful, meddling teenager, a menagerie of farm animals, and a big ol’ found family, and you got yourself a hoedown.
**Trigger Warnings: Fetal, spousal, and parental loss. Family history of alcohol and drug abuse.

We’re going back to Wisper, back to the Lee family, and this time the focus is on Bax. I’ve been hoping he’d find someone to give him another chance on love, and as it turns out his brother sends him the girl who can give him what he needs…. Greta Rose tells us what happened in Roads Behind Us,and she does it with so much care,so much love. I’ve known her a while now,and i’ve seen her grow with each story she tells, but the feelings in this one,the emotions she evoked, really touched my soul.
Bax lost his wife Candy and unborn son to an aneurysm, and he’s been struggling since. His daughter Athena is his saving grace, she’s the reason he gets up in the morning and she’s the light that shines his broken heart. Until Bea….when he first met her at his brother Brand’s place,he felt something stir for the first time since his wife’s death. Having her at his home, being Brand’s foreman on site, proves a temptation he can’t resist. Having a broken leg means he needs help in a lot of things, and Bea is volunteering. Only,it doesn’t last long before she “helps” him in other areas too….
Bea has come a long way since her divorce, and she’s determined to never allow a man to rule her again. Looking back, she knows the only reason the marriage lasted that long was because her husband was the only family she had after she lost her parents. Working for Brand, being his foreman,is her dreamjob, and she loves it. If only his brother wasn’t such a temptation…..he’s not only gorgeous,he’s got a wonderful personality too! And she can relate to his grief…having witnessed her father’s after her mother’s death. But unlike her father,he does his best for his daughter,to love her as best he can. With his broken leg it’s only natural to help him,and before long, she finds herself invested in his and Athena’s wellbeing…..and more.
The road behind them doesn’t stop them from taking another chance on love. It may have made them approach it differently, but they appreciate it all the more. Bax and Bea’s journey to a well deserved happy after is inspiring, and i loved every second.
(And having experienced loss of children myself (one a miscarriage, and one at the age of almost 13) i can say Greta Rose handled Bax’ and Athena’s loss with care and empathy.)
Once again I was given the privilege to be an ARC reader and this one didn’t disappoint! Get ready to have all the feels in Roads Behind Us!
The book tells the story of Bax and Bea. Bax is struggling to find closure and his future after a devastating loss. Bea is a no nonsense, tough talking tomboy who won’t let anything (or anybody) push her around. Alone in the world, she’s looking for a family and community to settle in.
I absolutely love how the characters personalities play off each other the banter had me laughing until I had tears in my eyes. I also loved how characters from previous books were intertwined. They were a very natural part of the storyline. Having read the entire Wisper Dreams series, it always fun to see an appearance of other characters.
This book has some heavy topics, but Greta Rose West wrote another beautiful love story that with a surprising twist!
Oh my heart! I spent a good portion of this one with tears streaming down my face. My heart hurt so bad for Bax and Athena. This was a gorgeous read from start to finish. My heart broke, I laughed at Bea’s fantastic sass, I swooned at Bax’s sweetness, I giggled at the antics of his friends and in the end it was tears of happiness as one chapter closed and another began. I’m a sucker for single dad romances and this one hit the spot. There was a rawness to the grief and the devotion to his daughter that really hit me hard. I’m enjoying this series and this was a great addition. I’m looking forward to more. Highly recommend but check the trigger warnings and protect your heart.
We are home in Wisper again, and Roads Behind Us takes us on Bax and Beas journey. I was dying for more of Greta’s phenomenal writing and I was not disappointed. This time we are tackling some heavy topics - grief, child loss, parental loss, our MMC being a widow and father to a preteen (scary vibes). The way Greta writes so intimately about the emotions surrounding grief, and the challenges it brings really resonates with me. It was truly like she plucked my own feelings out of my head, but put them into much better words. Bax is navigating life 3 years after the passing of his wife Candy and their unborn son, Duo. His daughter, Athena is what keeps him going but after suffering a broken leg he is at somewhat of a stalemate in life. When his brother Brand sends his foreman(forewoman) Bea to Wisper to finish the construction on the family property, Bax soon realises that life isn’t black and white anymore and maybe it never had to be in the first place. Bea is outspoken, authoritative, beautiful and takes no shit. I loved her immediately. She also knows what it feels like to feel hopelessly alone in life. Together, they create a beautiful HEA. I’m so glad I got to read this ARC, thank you Greta 🩵 I’m already super pumped for Forever Finds Us after reading the teaser!!

Roads Behind Us by Greta Rose West was masterfully written. It was beautiful and poignant in how it tackled grief, and fluid in the way it worked through healing after loss occurs. Now our characters...I loved Bea; she was a feisty spitfire who held her own. She had some lines that straight up made me cackle, her “get yourself a Snickers” made me laugh out loud for real. She keeps her cards close to her chest, but isn’t afraid to open herself to something new. Now, Bax is amazing…I want a Bax in my life haha. He feels all the feels, whether good or bad, and you just want to be there with him and walk the road alongside him. Their story was everything I have been waiting months for, and it didn’t disappoint for a single minute. Now I have to wait again until the next book comes out. Excuse me while I nurse my depression with rereads.
Roads Behind Us is an emotional read in the Whisper Dreams Series. This was a fantastic read, I loved Bea & Bax. The banter & steam was off the charts. Greta Rose West keeps you hooked with her writing and has you laughing one minute and crying the next. I really loved this book and could not get enough of it!
The Wisper Dreams series continues in Roads behind us with widowed dad Bax Lee and Bea’s story. The banter between the two is hilarious. I mean laugh out loud. Greta Rose West you did it again. These two will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Before you start this book, read the trigger warnings. Especially if you have experienced loss of a spouse and/or a child this book will hit you in the feels.
I don't know where to begin, I laughed and cried but in the end I was so happy with how the story ended.
I love Bea she is strong and independent and takes no shit from anyone, she is also funny and witty, and Bax well, he is sad and still dealing with his grief, Im just glad that after everything that happened in his past that he was finally able to let go and try to love again. Bea and Bax fell in love fast, but they had to get through some hurdles, mainly dealing with the loss of Bax's son. Which was brought to the forefront by his estranged brother Dixon. Man I cried so much while I was reading those chapters, I can feel Bax's grief. I can feel it because I have felt it too. So yeah this one hit home a bit. I'm just so happy that they were able to see a future full of happiness, laughter and love.
Thank you Greta for this eARC I appreciate it and can't wait for Brand's book
Five stars are simply NOT enough for this absolutely magnificent book! Grab a box of tissues and get ready to travel the full gamut of emotions. This book will literally break your heart…yet heal it in the process! Greta Rose West has truly captured all the feels necessary to tell this incredible story. The storyline is simply magnificent; the characters are well developed and so believable; the plot twists and turns are simply stunning; and the HEA is absolutely stunning! You definitely need to add this one to your personal collection—so grab your copy today! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was completely mesmerized by it!) ❤️❤️❤️
I've been invested in this series since the very beginning... There are always a lot of emotions that surface when I read them, but this one hits home. It really reached deep into my heart. As a mom, I can't imagine what Bax must have gone through and felt at the loss of his wife and mother of his daughter. I cried... and cried, and not always in pain. Bea and Bax have perfect chemistry; they deserve each other! Another little gem of a read! Now I'm really looking forward to the next volume, "Forever Finds Us," which will feature our beloved deputy, Roxanne, and Brand, Bax's brother. Coming September 25, 2025!
Bea has worked for Brand for a couple of years, she's his foreman, now he wants her to go to his hometown and manage the guest cabins and other construction work. There she re-meets Bax, his older, grumpier brother and his daughter, Athena, there's chemistry between them but she wants to keep things professional and not upset the status quo with her workforce. She becomes very friendly with Athena, having lost their mothers at a young age they have that in common. Work is going well although there appears to be a watcher, no one knows who or why, until an unexpected event occurs. You'll need your hankie present for this one!
Greta has a way of creating characters you can imagine being friends with. (Although I want to be Bea)
When the spark between Bax and Bea ignites be prepared. Greta fans the flames and the dirty talkin' cowboy comes out to play.
Bax and Bea have both experienced loss in their lives and constructed walls to protect themselves. Everyone processes loss differently, whether it's the loss of a spouse, parent(s), child or even a relationship. This is a beautifully written emotional journey of coming to terms with those losses. Keep some tissues handy because parts of this story will make you cry.
But there is plenty of banter and humor that will make you smile, laugh out loud or in some cases cause you to snort your coffee.
You'll encounter a "Wooly Wally" (or two) and a bunch of other animals.
Bax again because that man will make you weak in the knees.
Bax's best friend is Rye Graves, if you haven't met him yet you're missing out. He's as drool worthy as Bax. (find his story in Midnight Surrounds Us)
There is an unexpected surprise for Bax and Bea.
And always a HEA
This story will stay with you long after you have turned the last page.
Roads Behind Us, the sixth book in the Wisper Dreams series, is another must read by Greta Rose West. She's written a steamy, heartfelt, emotional rollercoaster of a story that you will end up reading cover to cover late into the night. This second chance romance is Bax and Bea's love story, set in the wonderful town of Wisper Wyoming. If you haven't read any books written by Greta before, take a chance on this awesome author, you won't regret it. I recommend you read her Cade Ranch series also. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
An emotional rollercoaster as we get Bax’s story. He has been struggling, his daughter is his only light since the loss of his wife, Candy. Bea is finally on the other side of her divorce, and her independence is stronger than ever.
Our two broken souls meet at Brand's home, she is his Foreman and Bax’s brother. Maybe, just maybe, there is something still left in their hearts for another. Will they take a second chance at love? I love their journey; the story had me hooked.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
This book evokes so many emotions. This is a moving story of a widowed father, Bax, and Bea, the sassy construction manager set to work on his property. They start of denying the attraction. But the pull is just too strong! When they finally connect, WOW! Greta knows how to create steam! The story wrestles with guilty, denial, and worthiness. We go through the roller coaster, the romance and get to a very unexpected, yet happy ending!
Oh my goodness we are back with the steamy cowboys of Wisper!!! This book is about Bax of the Lee family, there is so much good stuff packed into Lee and Bea’s HEA it’s hard to put down! There is so many emotions packed in here and an amazing story about letting go and growing into a new future. The community of Wisper is filled with sexy cowboys, strong independent women, acceptance and 🌶️🌶️🌶️ love scenes! If you’re looking for a series that is more than this one is for you.
This is a Single Dad Romance, and this is the sixth book in the Wisper Dreams. I have read the first five books in this series before picking up this book, but I think you can read this book as a stand alone. If you read this book as a stand alone you will be missing the back stories of some of the secondary characters and some about the farm/family. I loved the book, and I love the characters in this book.
This isn't your typical romance. The triggers the author warned us about are real - death of a spouse, death of an unborn child, death of a parent, abusive/neglectful parent, abandonment of a child. Bax is drowning in sorrow after his wife and their unborn son dies. The only thing motivating him to keep going is his daughter until Bea shows up. She's there to coordinate construction of some houses and cabins after Bax breaks his leg. The attraction is instant but they both have issues to work through.
This story has all the emotions and they lead to an HEA. Bax finds a way to enjoy life again, and let his sorrow go while not forgetting his lost wife and son. The issues are treated well and not easily dismissed or ignored. I know how difficult it is to lose a child and this brought some things up for me but the overall message is survival and being able to live life and love again.
I received an advance reader copy and this is my honest review.
Book Review - Roads Behind Us by Greta Rose West The book is a great mix of emotion, growth, and resilience. It’s both heartbreaking at times, happy, sexy and funny. One of the most powerful takeaways is the reminder that every day is a new opportunity - a fresh start to grow, heal, and learn from what we've been through.
You are going to need your tissues for this one. Please check trigger warning before reading
I absolutely adored Bax and Bea’s story. This book made me laugh and cry. Loved being back in Whisper with the Lee family. I can’t wait for Brand’s story next.
I was given the privilege to ARC read this and I'm at a loss for words. This is by far the best of Greta's books. This story is filled with emotion. Make sure to check the trigger warnings but you won't regret meeting Bax and Sweetie along with the rest of the gang. Be prepared to lose your heart.
This was a very enjoyable, quick read! As always, the characters were well developed and strong in personality. The smut was rather mild in my opinion, at least compared to some of Greta's previous books, but nevertheless good.
The only thing I could say is that for some reason, this felt a bit rushed to me. It all went rather fast from "I shan't do this" to "I love you". ^^ That's not necessarily a bad thing tho, just an observation.
Roads Behind Us Greta’s books show you that even if life kicks you in the teeth, you can have your happy ever after, if you allow yourself to believe you deserve it. Great book, really enjoyed reading it, can’t wait until the next one. (ARC reader)
Love After Loss has this Fastburn Cowboy Romance diving right into hope territory.
Bax is a single dad to a teenage daughter, building a rustic cabin resort for tourists on his family’s old sheep farm, while desperately trying to not think about the loss of his late wife and infant son. When Bax tangos with a bull and breaks his leg in the process, he’s forced to deal with long buried grief and hope for a peaceful future.
Bea is a divorced project manager for Bax’s brother’s construction company, helping out her boss by filling in for Bax as he recovers from his injury and finishing up several projects on the family property. But finding Bax struggling to do the simplest of tasks has Bea helping with more than either her or Bax bargained for—hint, hint, wink, wink.
It doesn’t take long for these two to become entwined, but their budding romance comes to a screeching halt when an unexpected delivery is bestowed on Bax. Can Bax move on from his grief to live the happy life with Bea and the family he wants to build with her before she head’s back to her life out of state? Will Bea be able to break through Bax’s anxiety to show him they can both have the love and fresh start they deserve while welcoming the changes thrust upon them?
This book was a mash-up of steamy moments, laugh out loud scenes, heart-wrenching angst, and a fast-paced HEA. Bea is a strong FMC, taking control of her life, as well as any relationship she has. Bax is a stubborn MMC with a heart of gold and seizing every ounce of happiness he comes across. When these two come together, there is no slowing down.
As a mother who lost her baby at nearly 20 weeks gestation, I relate with the loss in this book. Yes, there were heavy parts, parts where my heart was squeezing inside of my chest to the point it hurt and I had to step away for a beat. But Greta wrote the loss with such care and tenderness, acknowledging the hurt and loss for what it was while also reminding readers of the beauty of what it was in the moment. That is an extremely hard thing to do, and she did it with grace and dignity for any reader who has experienced something similar. It really justified my feelings with my own loss.
If you love steamy, small town, fastburn, single dad, blended family, love after loss, a take-charge FMC, a hopeful romantic and vulnerable MMC, cowboy romance, then pre-order this book today. My rating is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Every time I read a book by Greta Rose West I have to remind myself that Wisper, Wyoming is not a real place and these are not real people. This gets more difficult with each book she writes because she has an amazing talent for writing characters that are so real and relatable, you feel as if you know them. The Roads Behind Us, is another outstanding example of her exceptional writing and storytelling. The Roads Behind Us is part of the Wisper Dreams series and is centered on the Lee family, specifically Bax and his daughter Athena. You do not have to read any of the books in the series to understand this story because any pertinent background information is explained. I would suggest reading Midnight Surrounds Us first but I would also suggest reading all of Greta Rose West’s books. Roads Behind Us is a beautiful story of two people becoming friends and falling in love with each other. Bea and Bax have both had their shares of struggles and loss, when Bea’s path crosses with Bax’s they find strength in each other. One of my favorite parts of this book is the love this family has for each other and how they pull Bea right into their fold. Bea is such a strong, independent woman, who has had to look out for herself for a long time. Deep down inside she is vulnerable and scared with her desire to be part of a family. Bax has lived in a state of going through the motions since he lost his wife. He has worn his pain for three years and has not been able to move through his grief. When they meet, Bea sparks something in Bax to make him see that he has a lot of life left. This is a beautiful story with humor, tears, and love. Very much like life. I am very much looking forward to Brand Lee’s story next. I received and ARC for my honest review.
Bax and Bea’s first meet did not go so well and now two years later, she’s the forewoman on his brother's construction company and is in charge of the crew that is building on his land. He remembers the feisty woman and she remembers his opening remarks towards her but she’s there to do a job. Years ago Bax was not at his best, still reeling from a loss and an attraction to Bea threw him off kilter…as did the alcohol that night. He is still not at his best with a busted leg in a cast and on crutches and regrets the crude comment from years ago. Now that Bea is there, she sees another side of Bax, which makes it more difficult to ignore her attraction to him…he’s kind, affectionate, vulnerable, honest, an amazing dad and handsome. Bax tries to fight his feelings but it’s a losing battle and his daughter Athena, approves of Bea. Bea is only there for a few weeks to get the build done and then she’s leaving, she doesn’t want to give up her job that is her lifeline but Bax’s family is what she has been looking for all her life until a surprise is left that leaves them all reeling. I LOVED LOVED LOVED Bax, after all he has been through he’s still there for Athena and doing the best he can after a tragedy, and he was not a man w***e, which for me was the best part. Bea was a force, she has to be in a male dominated job, but when her walls come down around Bax….loved it! The story flowed beautifully with descriptions that were spot on with steam, a few laughs and some tears….I couldn’t stop flipping the pages once I started. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
Roads Behind Us is a beautifully written, heart warming, thought provoking Cowboy romance with a HEA ending but boy, do the lead characters Bax and Bea have their work cut out to achieve it. Set against the backdrop of the Grand Teton Mountains of Wyoming, Greta Rose West's latest addition to the Wisper Dreams series is a tale of love lost, guilt reconciled and family found with a lot of soul searching in between.
Bax Lee and Bea Baker (AKA Sweetie) have met before under inauspicious circumstances. So, when Bea's boss (Bax’s older brother) tasks her to complete the construction of houses and holiday lets at their family farm, Bea has preconceived ideas about what to expect. However Bax, a widower with a self assured teenage daughter, surprises her with a warm welcome. As the days pass, Bax becomes to rely on Bea’s help as he recovers from a broken femur and begins to mend his broken heart. But while Bea finds comfort in Bax’s arms and loves the camaraderie of the Lee family and their friends, her work and life is in Sheridan, 7 hours away and she is unsure that a happy future is on the cards for her.
Cue, the bolt from the blue that shatters Bax and changes everything for Bea. No spoilers here, but beware Dear Reader, it’s a gut wrenching tear jerker that ends as sweetly as cherry pie. Greta has written this stunning work from the heart, and it shows. Wonderfully descriptive, Roads will make you contemplate about what’s important to keep and what’s best to let go. Hang in there and you’ll enjoy the ride.
This book? THIS BOOK. Let me tell you..It felt like getting hugged by a cowboy in the middle of a warm sunset while your favorite song plays in the background and you finally cry about something you didn’t know you’d been holding in. Yeah..That kind of book. This was truly the most heartwarming movie inside my head. Damn if Greta hasn’t done it again!
This story gave me everything I want in a small-town, cowboy romance. There’s a rugged, cowboy on a journey of healing. Paired with a no nonsense FMC who’s all sass but has soft edges where it counts. The subtle banter? Delicious. The healing and grief? A sucker punch straight to the chest. And just when I thought I was emotionally stable, the plot twist showed up, wrung my heart out like a dish rag. But it all ended so well.
It wasn’t just yeehaw and shirtless fence posting (although..no complaints there 😏) This story tackled grief with a gentleness that truly got me. And somewhere in the middle of crying into my hoodie at fictional characters, I realized I had accidentally fallen in love with BOTH of them.
By the end? I was ready to pack my bags and take a one way trip to Whisper.
In conclusion: tender, hot, and healing. Just the right mix of spice, snark, and soft. 10/10 would ride off into the emotional sunset again because Greta has NEVER let me down. Listen, if loving a fictional cowboy is wrong, I don’t want to be right..and if anyone needs me, I’ll be daydreaming about Whisper and pretending I know how to ride a horse.
Second chance romance is my favorite, and when it's a second chance at love after loss, my little heart is all for it.
Bax is a single dad, doing his best to raise his teenage daughter after losing his wife. To add insult to injury, he's now down with a broken leg thanks to one angry bull. When his brother's forewoman shows up to oversee a build on Bax's property, Bax could use her help. He can't deny his attraction to the tiny spitfire, but how can he possibly let go of his past to move on?
Bax is my favorite kind of hero. He's rough around the edges, but a big softie at heart. He loves hard, especially for his daughter, but he doesn't feel deserving of being loved back.
Bea is a take no bs, independent woman, but underneath her tough exterior, she's also a woman who is vulnerable and wants the love of a family.
The attraction between these two is instant and they definitely burn up the pages. I absolutely adored Bax's daughter Athena and his meddling friends and family too.
There is a twist that I never saw coming and it brought about some of the most emotional moments of this story for me. Tears cried and heart broken before being put back together again.
If you're a fan of small town dirty talking cowboys, then you'll definitely want to add this book (and this series) to your TBR.
Greta Rose West did an outstanding job of telling the stories of both Bax and Bea. Each had suffered family loss that affected them deeply. Because of Bea's loss of her parents, she was able to immediately understand the depth of Bax's loss of his wife, and his daughter's loss of her mother. Bea was a no-nonsense, independent woman that was used to dealing with men on a personal level as well as on a construction job site. An accident lays Bax up and when Bea shows up on his ranch to act as forewoman for the construction projects his brother had started, she not only takes on the job of completing the projects, but she steps in to help Bax and his daughter. Her help brings sunshine, life, healing, and love back into Bax's life. But can he convince her to stay once the building projects are completed, or will she leave? This is an inspirational storyline that is well worth the read. I highly recommend this book.
I am grateful to the author for providing me with a copy of this book. I am leaving a voluntary review. I honestly loved this book.
