I am delighted to have stumbled upon this wonderful middle-grade portal fantasy! Three adopted siblings who coincidentally share the same birthday, despite not being blood related to one another, have latent magical powers awaken on their twelfth birthdays. This awakening signals envoys from the magical realm to come retrieve these young magic wielders, though some wish to use them for their own nefarious purposes… An edge of your seat adventure then ensues!
What I truly appreciated about this novel was the level of characterization. So many middle-grade novels (in my opinion) fail to give each character a voice, relying more heavily on the story’s arc to carry readers to “The End”. This book had an exciting storu, but fleshed out the main characters and their individual voices to boot. Making me unable to put it down.
Fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and anyone who habitually checks the backs of wardrobes for portals to Narnia will delight in this portal-fantasy page-turner.
This was such a fun read. I always love a good fantasy book with wonderful adventures and the Mirror Drifters is definitely one of them. Its a wonderful magical book full of adventure, magic, and mystery perfect to keep young readers into the story. Each character is relatable and each have their own strength and weaknesses which make them feel real. Definitely a must-read!
If you love stories with magic, unexpected twists, and sibling banter, The Mirror Drifters: The Other Magic is a ride you won’t forget. D.D. Snows introduces us to Ben, Archie, and Maya, three adopted siblings who share a birthday and, as they discover, an extraordinary destiny. Their mundane morning of birthday pranks and chocolate quickly spirals into a world of magic, danger, and revelations that their lives are anything but ordinary.
Snows starts the book with relatable chaos, an older brother tormenting his sibling with "Socks of Doom." This lighthearted introduction feels like a nod to how childhood adventures can turn epic in an instant. The characters' interactions, especially Archie’s comically reckless charm, brought genuine laughs. Snows’ knack for dialogue shines here, making every squabble and quip feel natural and engaging.
As the plot thickened, I was genuinely hooked by the unfolding mystery. The sudden appearance of Jo, their long-lost sister, and her cryptic warnings about magical powers felt surreal yet gripping. The transitions between the ordinary and the fantastical are seamless, like when Archie transforms into a dog or Maya flickers in and out of sight. Snows captures the siblings’ disbelief and curiosity beautifully, mirroring how we might react if the magical became real. The way the family dynamics evolve as they confront these changes adds an emotional depth that I wasn’t expecting.
The dramatic entry of the conjurers was intense and eerie and their villainy was undeniable. Snows paints a vivid picture of their charm and menace, making them compelling antagonists. The details about Aether, a twin magical world, were fascinating. The climax, involving the siblings’ escape with Jo and the emergence of a quirky pooka (a magical octopus-like creature), was a whirlwind of action and humor. Pumpers, as Archie lovingly names him, steals the show with his odd charm and loyalty. The blend of high stakes and levity keeps the story unpredictable, a hallmark of Snows’ style.
This book is a delightful blend of adventure, humor, and heart. The core of the story; family, discovery, and self-identity shines. I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys fast-paced magical tales with endearing characters. The Mirror Drifters might just remind you that there’s magic in the most unexpected places, even in a pair of smelly socks.

The return of the long-lost sister, Jo, raises the stakes immediately, transforming the journey from an exciting adventure into a gripping fight for survival. The looming threat of the dark conjurers keeps the tension high, while the bond between the characters adds warmth and heart to every twist and turn.
The concept of “other magic” is especially compelling, offering a fresh and creative take on magical discovery and personal growth. The balance of danger, courage, and trust makes this story perfect for young readers who love action-packed fantasy, while still offering enough complexity to keep adults fully engaged.

The idea of "other magic" is brilliantly developed, and the characters feel real and relatable, even in a fantasy setting. I loved the mix of danger, mystery, and wonder it felt like being part of an epic magical quest.
Insufferable characters and shame on the adoption agencies for just letting children get grabbed and one adoptee just disappears from earth and her adopted parents aren't held accountable?!
D.D. Snows has delivered a true masterpiece in The Mirror Drifters: The Other Magic. From the very beginning, I was captivated by its sense of mystery and wonder. It’s the kind of story that wraps around you like a cloak, drawing you deeper into a rich and magical world that is both breathtaking and dangerous.
The pacing is masterful each chapter builds tension while allowing space for readers to connect with the characters. And these characters are truly memorable. The sibling dynamics are written with nuance and authenticity, full of warmth, conflict, and love. The way the children interact, face fear, and grow through each challenge is the emotional backbone of the novel.
When Jo returns, the story shifts into high gear. Her reappearance not only introduces a dark and deadly threat, but also challenges the family’s unity and trust. The trio of dark conjurers is truly chilling, and their pursuit creates constant suspense. The mission back to Earth raises the stakes even higher, making this more than just a magical quest it’s a journey of survival, self-discovery, and transformation.

The magical world he creates is beautifully detailed, yet what truly makes the story shine is the emotional core. When the siblings are pulled into an enchanted land, it’s not just about surviving magical beasts or battling evil forces it’s about finding strength in each other and unlocking a deeper magic that lies within. The concept of “the other magic” is brilliant and symbolic, representing untapped potential, courage, and unity.
Jo’s sudden return after being lost adds an intense emotional twist to the story. Her presence changes everything, and the siblings’ efforts to protect her and confront the evil chasing them bring out moments of true bravery and vulnerability. I especially appreciated how Snows weaves themes of family, trust, and sacrifice throughout the story without ever slowing down the pace.
