Mated to the King #4

Love Bites Really Hard

Rate this book
A demon imprinted on me, so I had to turn to the monster king for help.

Instead of actually being useful, King Bane tells me that I should just mate with the demon.

At least, until he also imprints on me.

Then we have no choice but to seal the deal in every way there is.

But his wing of the Manor is quickly overrun with chaos and hatred because of our newfound connection, putting us in yet another predicament.

We have to convince the monsters that I'm a terrible match for both Bane and the demon.

I have to become a target to take the focus off the king, even when it pushes his possessive instincts further than any sane person ever would.

With our lives and the Manor's stability hanging in the balance, we have to suck it up and make the monsters hate me.

Because being chased out of Mistwood and away from my family entirely?

That would bite even harder than my brand-new mate bond.

*This is a spicy enemies-to-lovers romance with a happily ever after

This one was definitely the most fun I've read out of the four books! 😂

Bane and Zora were just hilarious together, and I really love how they were both so obsessed and possessive of each other. These traits were evident in all the men in the previous book, but they had never been applied to the women. So, it's refreshing to see Zora portrayed this way.

Ngl, I was a bit skeptical about her since she came off as this tough-as-nails character in the previous stories, and I honestly thought she’d be all witchy in this one. But I’m really happy to be proven wrong! 😄

Zora was just as stubborn as all her sisters. But hers didn't stick around for too long. She’s got a good sense of when to stand firm and when to acknowledge her mistakes I really enjoy her feisty side, but I appreciate her even more when she shows her humble side. She's independent, yet she didn't hesitate to show her vulnerable side to Bane, even though it wasn't easy for her. She opened up to him and shared her thoughts and fears.

As for Bane, can I have my own Bane? 😂

Look, I get it! All the guys in this series have been pretty swoonworthy (most of the time), but I have to say, out of the four, I think Bane really stands out as the best. He's my bias, mmmkay? 🤣

He's been known for his control all his life and has never been one to lose it, however, Zora keeps testing him. And despite the thin thread of control he's holding on to since he met her, he still always approached things with patience, gentleness, and understanding toward her. He never played the push-and-pull game or denied his feelings.

When things got tough, he never walked away. Instead, he preferred to communicate and work through their issues together. I love a man who likes to communicate. 🤭

He always puts her needs before his own. He even learned how to make her coffee, even though he can't stand the smell of it, just so he can give it to her because he knows she loves her morning coffee. He turned into her personal canopy once he learned that Sirens needed it to catch some sleep. Most of all, he's so possessive, jealous, and protective of her.

I could probably still share some of the swoony things he did for her, but I think I’ll hold off on that for now. The point is, he really knows how to show his love for his mate. 🤭

Anywaaay, I love them, but ngl, things got progressively fast between these two. They were all over each other at the speed of light. 😂

Also, I think this book has more steam than the others, so I ended up skimming some of them. These two were so hot for each other, it's crazy sometimes. Bane is sooo insatiable—for someone new to sex, he certainly has no qualms or boundaries. 🫣 And for someone who barely likes sex, Zora was more than happy to participate and accommodate Bane's needs all the time. 🤣

That being said, overall, I really enjoyed this one, and I think this is my favorite couple so far. There's still one book left, so we'll just have to wait and see! 🤭

Book info:
- Monster (Gargoyle) x Siren
- Imprinting
- Mention of abuse (past)
- Steaaamy!
- No cheating or separation
- Slight OM/OW
- V MMC 🤭, No V FMC
- HEA (mos later, pregnant w/ twins)

Notes:
- OW. Not really. But there's a woman that his mother has been trying to match him with for a century now, but he's just not interested in her. She appeared in the story but doesn't make any scene. She was just sad that Bane bonded to Zora, but in the end she found her own mate.
- OM. This demon imprinted on Zora without her consent, and he's the reason why she had to resort to finding someone else to bond with. He did cause some issues in the story—nothing major, though. And since the OM is really a nice guy (overall and looking past the imprinting), Bane didn't want to hurt him and instead found a way to break the imprint. The OW ends up with him.
- Celibacy. Zora said she's not a fan of sex, and I think she only does it when there's a necessity to feed; even her sisters confirmed this. So I don't think she's totally experienced, but compared to Bane, she definitely knows more than a thing or two. And I think it has been a while for her.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

Zora is a Siren who has grown up surrounded by supernatural royalty, including her dragon shifter brothers and their mates. She is used to being watched, managed, and protected, so when she attends a party with her sisters and their partners, she decides she wants one simple thing: a carefree night with a handsome stranger. She chooses Oscar, a man who seems charming at first. He is attractive, attentive, and easy to flirt with, which fits her goal for the evening. As the night goes on, she realizes she likes him less with every new detail she learns about him. His personality feels thin, his reactions feel overly sensitive, and she begins to sense that he is not someone she would ever want long term.

The problem is that by the time she is ready to walk away, her sisters’ mates inform her that Oscar is a demon. Worse, he has already imprinted on her. In this world, imprinting is a binding supernatural attachment that cannot be undone unless the male dies or the imprint breaks from extreme emotional distress. Killing Oscar is not an option. The other potential solution is to hide Zora away in Monster Manor with the unrated females under the protection of Bane, the monster king, until Oscar loses his grip on reality from the separation. That process could take years.

Zora does not want a mate, especially not one she already dislikes. She considers staying at the Vamp manor under the protection of the vampire king, who is mated to her sister, but she also considers Bane’s offer of protection. Her own idea is to find another male to pretend to mate with, hoping Oscar will see them together and the imprint will break. Bane immediately shuts that down. He warns her that she would only end up imprinted to the new male, which would make her situation even worse.

Bane is a Gargoyle and the king of the monsters. He respects Oscar and does not want to kill him, but he is deeply concerned about what Zora might do. When he brings her in to speak with Oscar, he watches her closely. In that short interaction, he accidentally imprints on her himself. Zora notices instantly when his eye color shifts to match hers. Now she has two supernatural males tied to her, and neither imprint can be ignored.

Bane tells her plainly that she must choose one of them. If she chooses Oscar, Bane will have to leave the region entirely or risk losing control and killing him. Fortunately for Zora, she is attracted to Bane. His personality is stronger, steadier, and far less fragile than Oscar’s. Their dynamic feels more balanced, and she finds herself drawn to him even while she is furious about the situation.

Highlights

A heroine with agency and humor. Zora’s reactions are specific and grounded. When she realizes Oscar has imprinted on her, she does not collapse into melodrama. She immediately starts brainstorming solutions, even if they are chaotic. Her attempt to find a fake mate is a perfect example of her stubborn, practical streak.
A compelling twist with Bane’s imprint. The moment Bane’s eyes shift is one of the strongest scenes in the book. Zora’s shock is immediate, and the emotional stakes double in a single breath. It is a clean, effective turning point that pushes the story into new territory.
A well-defined contrast between Oscar and Bane. Oscar’s sensitivity and clinginess are shown through specific behaviors, such as his emotional reactions during the party and his inability to handle Zora’s independence. Bane, on the other hand, is calm, strategic, and willing to give Zora space even when he is struggling with his own imprint. Their differences make Zora’s eventual preference feel earned.
Strong continuity with the series. The presence of Zora’s sisters, their mates, and the supernatural political structure adds depth. The world feels lived in, and the stakes of imprinting are clear because the rules have been established across multiple books.

Limitations

Oscar’s characterization can feel thin. While he is meant to be the wrong choice, his personality is so unappealing that it never feels like a real triangle. His sensitivity is shown through repeated emotional reactions, but he does not gain much nuance beyond that.
Zora’s options feel limited by design. The imprint rules create tension, but they also remove some of Zora’s freedom. Her choices are framed as mate A or mate B, which may feel restrictive for readers who prefer more open-ended romantic arcs.
The pacing around the double imprint is abrupt. Bane’s imprint happens quickly, and while the shock is effective, some readers may want more build-up before such a major shift.

Narration

Marie Hawkins and Lucas Dixon deliver performances that match the tone of the story.

• Marie Hawkins gives Zora a voice that fits her personality. She captures Zora’s confidence, frustration, and humor with clear emotional shifts. When Zora realizes Oscar has imprinted on her, Hawkins adds a sharp edge of disbelief that enhances the scene.
• Lucas Dixon brings weight to Bane. His voice is steady, deep, and controlled, which fits a Gargoyle king who is used to managing dangerous situations. When Bane accidentally imprints on Zora, Dixon’s subtle change in tone reflects the internal conflict without becoming melodramatic.

The dual narration helps distinguish the emotional tones of each character and keeps the story engaging.

Final Opinion

Love Bites Really Hard delivers a fast, entertaining paranormal romance with a heroine who refuses to be pushed into a bond she does not want. Zora’s personality is vibrant and specific, and her reactions to the imprinting chaos feel grounded in who she is. Bane is a strong match for her, and their dynamic has a satisfying balance of tension and attraction.

The imprinting rules create high stakes, and the twist of Bane imprinting on her adds a strong emotional hook. While Oscar is not developed enough to feel like a true romantic rival, the story still succeeds because the focus remains on Zora’s autonomy and her growing connection with Bane.

The narration enhances the experience with performances that match the characters’ emotional states and personalities.

Overall, this audiobook is a fun, engaging addition to the series, especially for listeners who enjoy supernatural politics, imprinting dynamics, and heroines who refuse to be cornered.

Another great read in this series.
I really liked the siren sisters and their monster kings. Everybody is so special in their own way and I can‘t tell you often enough how creative the author is. The different species aren’t cliché and the author added a unique touch to each race.
Zora and Bane are so hot together. He imprints on her and they mated rather quickly. I liked their banter and the way they treat each other with mutual respect. Both are possessive and jealous which was hilarious sometimes.
There is a cliff hanger for the next couple too and I can‘t wait to read about the dragon king and his siren.
Overall I had a fun time with this story.

So sweet and fun!

I love Lola Glass so much. I love her books so much. This paranormal world she has created is everything sweet, fun, funny even, magical and silly, but filled with so much love.

Zora has completely met her match in Bane and while the falling happens so fast, the love happens harder. What happens when you take an overly possessive dominate male like Bane… who also happens to shift into a gargoyle? And pair him with an equally possessive siren? Sparks I tell you! The love was so good. The spice? Whewwww it was spicy! Kicking my feet and butterflies in the stomach spicy. I was swooning.

Honestly if you guys want a fun, sexy, shorter story to read, this series is literally perfect. I can’t get enough of them. They’re short and sweet but, packed with substance. I can’t wait for Avery’s book next! Happy reading all!

Romantasy / Sobrenatural (Sirenas, monstruos, vampiros, hombreslobo, faes…) / Parejas predestinadas

Mated to the King #4 – Love Bites Really Hard
by Lola Glass

Bane was absolutely perfect for Zora. She has completely met her match in him, and I loved the energy between them. Their dynamic had that spark of tension and chemistry that made this such a fun, sexy read.

One thing I’ve really appreciated about this series is how each sister’s story feels unique. Even within the same world, Lola Glass manages to give every couple their own vibe and journey, and Zora and Bane definitely stand out in their own way.

Overall, I’ve really enjoyed this series so far. It’s been an easy, entertaining dive into this paranormal world, and I’ll be heading straight into the final book to see how it all wraps up.

- Easy and quick read
- Siren x gargoyle shifter
- I love that both Zora and Bane are fiery and strong. They are a great match for one another.
- Zora and Bane have some great open communication. They're both straight shooters.

- This is my least favorite of the series so far.
- The story line felt contrived and chaotic. I wasn't invested.
- This book is missing the humor and the extra oof like the others in the series. I was waiting to find out what's unique about a monster/gargoyle bond...and got nothing!

This whole series has been great so far. This one might be my favorite. I loved Bane and Zora. They fit together so well. I loved how open and honest he was with her and didn't let her retreat. I am completely here for great communication between couples.

Each book builds on the last but the Author does a great job of giving enough of a recap that it shouldn't be too confusing,.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Negh. At this point, I'm just trying to get through this series for completionist's sake.

The whole set up surrounding making the monsters hate Zora makes ZERO sense to me. Everybody's worried about Oscar - the demon male who imprinted on Zora. They're trying to figure a way to snap an imprint bond for him - would having the subject of the imprint PERMANENTLY MATED to another not do that in the first place?

So, I needed to sell myself as a terrible person, really, really well. I could deal with all of Monster Manor hating me, if I didn't cost Oscar his life.

The plan the inner circle cooks up is just dumb. Painting the new monster queen as public enemy number 1 just to keep one soldier alive - a soldier who attempted to manipulate this woman, mind you, (he was luring her out of the party to get her alone!) - is just stupid. It paints Bane in a bad light - makes him a weak king and a weak partner. Worse! It makes Zora out to be evil and untrustworthy.

Was NOBODY thinking about the long-term here? Even if Oscar's imprint broke that afternoon, Zora was going to be the Monster Queen FOREVER. So we're giving every monster around a terrible impression of her, making everyone think she manipulated their KING, and at the end of this, everyone's just going to be FINE with her as their king's beloved wife??????

1 and 1 ain't makin' 2 here.

Zora being all in on this drama fest didn't exactly make me like her either.

The ONLY THING that redeemed this aspect of the story was the fact that it wasn't completely devoid of action. And it wasn't like the last book, which I feared it would be.

And before I jump into the relationship stuff - let me just say, the resolution makes about as much sense as the set up. Bane just announces that "psyche, we really actually want to be mates now and if anybody challenges that I'll rip your intestines out through your mouth." and everyone's like "oh, okay, cool. Good for you man." and that's that.

Really?! NOBODY doubted even a little bit? Nobody wondered if perhaps the sneaky manipulative siren wasn't still sneakily manipulating their king into announcing what he announced?

Okay. 👍

Now the relationship.

The relationship is probably one of the most poorly orchestrated and navigated of the books I've read so far. It's ALL sex, and for Zora, it's mostly, "okay this feels good but I'm totally not going to fall for him." sex. Total lie, obviously. But the tune never changed. So all the smut got repetitive after the first time or two.

Zora is anti-anything that has to do with falling in love or being soft and emotional and vulnerable with one's mate. But we don't know why for most of the story. And I'll be honest - finding out why wasn't a good enough reason to justify her hard-headedness in my opinion. She's just, in general, not a likeable character for me. There were times it genuinely felt like she was trying too hard to be sassy.

When all of the dramatics come to an end, Zora and Bane take a 'vacation' and THAT apparently is where they really get to know one another and fall in love.

We don't get to see ANY of it. We don't even get their first I love yous. We have to wait until the epilogue months later for that.

This whole book is a big ol' nothing burger as far as character development and plot goes.

The pregnancy stuff considering the situation was just gross too. She might be pregnant, so they get rid of her implant, and then swear off sex until they know for sure - which only lasts 5 minutes.

But they totally don't love each other and she doesn't think she'll be a good mother but she really wants a baby anyway. Just, what?

Why are all of these siren characters obsessed with pregnancy all of a sudden? Most of them didn't even WANT mates in book 1.

Talon's story is next, and while I've read books 3 and 4 to get to it, I'm not confident anymore it'll have been worth it. I'm sad.

Positives (because I feel bad for being so negative about these books):
1. There's no third act breakups in any of these stories. I HAVE to give Glass props for that.
2. These books are short and are very easy to read. The writing, while abrupt, isn't bad either.
3. MOST of the characters are generally likeable.

Honestly if you enjoy spicy fantasy reads and are looking to pad your reading goal for the year, these books aren't bad options. But if you're looking for subtance? Yeah, maybe miss these.

3 stars, the same HEA story continues with Bane. I thought he would be my favorite and I would say so far, he is. But Talon- next story- might change my mind :)

I liked this one better than the last one but still the inconsistencies abound. Like when they go swimming in the Unmated Monsters pool (cool right?), no mention of chlorine or glitter where as the previous stories make a big deal about it. And later the mention of glitter for the lady parts but C-section was mentioned?
Anyway, I loved the gargoyle angle and the wings, and the banter between them was good.

I did hate that Bane had to pretend to hate Zora, for whatever twisted logic, but liked the possible pregnancy plot (missing from the other books). Zora didn't track much for me in the earlier books, like Avery, so it's interesting to see

Highlights & Spoilers:
“There’s been a development,” Bane said, his gaze on me. Just like it had been since the moment he entered the room.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” I said flatly.
“What?” Clementine looked over at me. I didn’t turn her way.
“Unfortunately, I’m not,” Bane said.
“What are we missing?” Blair asked.
“This fuckwit imprinted on me too!” I tossed a hand in the king’s direction.

Zora is the crusty female that secretly longs for love and care:
"I felt better after talking to Bane. His refusal to walk away when I was angry had actually fixed things. I didn’t like that it meant I’d need to try to do that too, but it was what it was."

Most of the story is dedicated to them finding a way to break the other monsters "imprint" to her:
“She said Kai thinks all powerful males bite their mates.”
Bane nodded. “He’s right. They do.”
“You haven’t bitten me.”
“I was waiting for the right time.”
“What’s the right time?”
He shrugged. “When we’re not trying to convince our people that you’re the devil incarnate.”

On to book 5!

I liked Zora a lot more than I thought I would. Some would consider her a little abrasive when she's actually just a straight shooter and has a temper. There were some surprising revelations about her. I realized that most of her bluster was just her fear guiding her actions and thoughts, which helped me see her in a new light.

Zora was surprising. I found her to be a perfect match for Bane. He handled everything that she threw at him with an even temper. I liked Bane's calm nature but loved it when he got possessive. That was hot. If you're into monster romance, then this is a good one. I was surprised by his shifted form, but I wasn't mad about it. Haha! I liked Bane a lot. He withstood Zora with his patience, understanding, stubbornness, and love.

Love Bites Really Hard was a good read. I enjoyed the plot. It was light-hearted with a little drama from the monsters. I thought Zora would be fighting with Bane, but she was mostly fighting her own feelings. There’s only one siren left and an angry dragon king on the hunt. Avery's story is up next.

I had really enjoyed the first books in the Mate to the King series. They were engaging, addictive, and I flew through them because the story and characters kept me hooked.
Unfortunately, Love Bite Really Hard didn’t work as well for me. I enjoy paranormal romance with shifters and fantasy elements, but this one felt a bit like a “series B” installment compared to the earlier books.
The biggest issue for me was the lack of tension and build-up. The relationship between the characters moved very quickly, and many of the intimate scenes felt unnecessary or added just for the sake of it. Instead of building emotional or romantic tension, everything seemed to happen immediately, which made the story feel a bit rushed and, at times, immature.
I still finished the book because I genuinely liked the series up to this point, but this installment didn’t capture the same magic as the earlier ones

3.5 I really liked this one. It was pretty funny and Bane was perfect. I think Bane is my favorite guy from the series. And ya know I’m okay with the pregnancy at the end bc their relationship felt really believeable and good. I think Oscar and sierra getting together after one night was a bit rushed just bc of how determined he was to have Zora but maybe how long he was denied mixed with her being mated and someone else wanting him really helped. That said I did not like sierra at all or the “we’re better off without you” text. Like you both wanted and pushed for someone who was very honest about them not wanting or liking you so it was a bit of a personal problem. I’m looking forward to Avery’s book. I think it’s interesting that she’s gone for months and I’m curious why she’s gone for so long but her being happy so soon after leaving was good.

I was really worried Zora’s bitchy attitude was going to rub me the wrong way, but I loved her and I absolutely get her. She and Bane make the perfect pair. Her fire is exactly what the calm and controlled Bane needs, and he’s the stable source of support and love that Zora thought she would never have. Again we had character growth and a quickly resolved conflict. Lots of humor and spice. What can I say except fucking pick up book one and get into it already 😂

Much better.. a MFC with a backbone.. now we are talking.
I still think these books could have been reduced by 25% with zero plot being impacted, quite a lot of fluff conversations or information that was just irrelevant.

*spoilers*
Usually a pregnancy trope ain’t for me but I think this was done well. Glass captured a good internal conflict in bite size opportunities so it didn’t feel forced when the time came.

I love Zora and Bane!!! I was so looking forward to their story and Lola Glass absolutely delivered! This series is so fun, I love all the different creatures and rules/bios assigned to each. The relationship developed nicely in this one and I love interrogation room part 😂😂

Can’t wait for the next one!

Love bites really hard (lol) was better than the third book, mostly because of Bane. He was calmer, more level-headed and just overall a better guy than Kai. If you can put aside the very weird / very graphic smut, it’s actually an entertaining and bingeable read. But if you can’t, I’d skip it. As for me, I’m way too invested in this series to stop now… on to the last book!!!! 😂

I’m not sure what Lola Glass puts in her books but when I’m in the mood to read them I FLY through them!! At this point Lola Glass is 100% my comfort author. I just know I can turn my brain off and have a silly goofy time with her books!

Thank you for helping me get out of my slump Lola <<33

Until now, I think this one is the best yet in this series. I loved their dynamic.

Also I'm little sad that the next one is the last book and I have to say goodbye to this universe.

Hate to give such a low rating because the story was good but I really couldn’t get behind the FMC. MMC was great, but yeah the FMC just wasn’t my cup of tea
