Jules “Boko” Boudreaux is the younger brother of the newest leader of the Boudreaux family. After locating the missing best friend of his sister-in-law, Bridgette, the two quickly form a bond and become a staple in each other’s lives, and he vows to find everyone who hurt her and ensures their undoing.
A corporate and criminal lawyer by profession, he faces corruption daily. Even as the most skilled in his trade, he could not have been prepared for the darkness beneath the surface. Still, he will stop at nothing until he gets the answers that they both desperately desire. The harrowing things he finds out while helping Bridgette heal will only seal the fate of her transgressors.
Normally mild-mannered and light-hearted, when Jules becomes “Boko,” there isn’t a soul safe enough to cross him. While the most feared look their victims in the eyes, Boko can ensure you a painful demise from miles away.
The only thing scarier than what you can’t see is what you don’t know.…they have awakened The Silent Killer.
It took me a minute to remember Bridgette from Dreaux Book 1, as it has been a minute since I read. But when I did, my heart instantly broke. I was transported right back to the party with David, and those sick ass men. God only knows what they did to her. 😤🤬 Although her spirit is broken, her body battered and bruised, she has the heart of a lion determined to live. Albeit she is traumatized, fearful, and paranoid at times, she is here to tell her story. 💔
Jules Boudreaux being sent to rescue Bridgette was a God send. Underneath his wild behaviors, his need to spill blood, and his crazy, was a kind heart. Seeing Bridgette so vulnerable and scared drew him to her, and he wants to protect her from any and everything. He doesn’t even understand why he has this pull toward her, but he isn’t fighting it. His vow to be her protector is law, and anyone who stands in his way of that will be turned to dust. He has this softness with her that is so beautiful, it allows Bridgette to relax and just be with Jules.
Jules’ possessiveness in their friendship, and Bridgette’s curiosity of him was coming to a head. Feelings were brewing, and they both didn’t know what to think, or what to do about them. After some time had passed, and several conversations about what was happening between them, they decided to give it a shot. It was difficult at times for Bridgette, due to her past, but she knew that Jules would be patient and never hurt her. That therapy session took 👏🏾me👏🏾 out!! 😢 The way I was tearing up, made me want to look for these coward ass fictional men myself! 🤬 It was hard enough learning what Frank put her through, but that evil ass man that bought her from David. 😤 Lawd the things he did to her, I almost couldn’t make myself read it, it was just so horrific! 💔😢 But Bridgette made it. She is so much stronger than she gives herself credit for, and I could not wait to see her blossom. Her blessings were on the horizon. 🙏🏾❤
Jules is such an anomaly, with so many layers. I enjoyed learning about his childhood, and him learning of his cultural, and the “things” they liked to partake in. The way he wore so many hats was crazy but seemed to do it all with ease and finesse.
When karma came calling for those who had harmed Bridgette, I was almost afraid for them. Jules loved that woman beyond the moon, and I knew he would make them pay tenfold. Whew….. can we say justice is mine? I loved, loved, loved Jules and Bridgette. Although this read was hard to get through at times, being able to experience Bridgette find herself again was all worth it. Being loved, cared for, supported and protected by Jules changed her in every way, allowing her to heal and live once again. Amazing read!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I don’t know what to say. I did like Jules and Bunny. But the story is confusing and unrealistic in some places. So I guess I’ll view this as I would any other fantasy book. Because that’s what it should have been if this is the route the author planned to take. Also she still needs an editor. And question how is Bunny 24 years old? She ran away at 16. The day she got trafficked she stated she had only been with David and the crew for almost 4 years. So that would make her 20 when all that happened. Also she was only kidnapped for some months. And only about a year had passed since the events in Gabby s book happened so she couldn’t be no more than 22. Yeah it’s little details like this that throw me off. Overall it was an okay book. I give it 3 stars. Would have been slightly higher if not for the mistakes that happened too often.
The way I'm over here tickled is ridiculous. This was a really good read. Nek Mills you did good with this one. I knew when he said the word bird what was coming😂. Y'all just read the damn book.
What a wild ass time… man these brothers are absolutely nuts! Baby this brother is into the hoodoo unlike the other brothers and when he gets going you never know how far he will go to get revenge. I had a time and cackled when he finally got revenge on his ex 😩😩😩
Bridgette and Jules were everything and had me hooked from the beginning. My heart broke over and over for Bridgette and her story. But watching her slowly get that power back for herself was so good to watch. I listened on audio, but if there are trigger warnings, check them. The author more than delivered with this one. I laughed, cried, held my breath and everything else. This really was an amazing story and I can’t wait to read both ok three.
Dre praying every time he was around Jules kept me in tears 😂😂😂😂
Second read: okay, I just listened to the audio and man…it was more emotional than when I read it.
I love this one
Oh my…I thought Zoo was going to be my fav but whew…Boko aka Jules…man oh man. That is one scary ass man but I’d love to be loved by him🤣🤣. I know it’s said a lot of times that these men don’t play about their women…but baybee Jules DID NOT play about Bridgette. That man turned that girl into a damn canary behind his woman🤣.
So this got really dark & heavy at times because of the subject matter. There wasn’t much mafia business in this one. Which is ok. The focus was on Bridgette & her healing journey & the way that Jules loved and supported her through it. He was the comedic relief in the first book so it was nice getting to see the different layers of him in this book. It was really enjoyable, but there were multiple inconsistencies that took me out of the story briefly, but if you aren’t the type to pay attention to detail it might not matter. For example, saying there was no couch in the room, and then literally the next page “she got up from the sofa”. Or saying the character had on a one piece and two paragraphs later someone saying “you look good in that bikini”. Just bothered me lol. Overall though I loved the plot, the found family, and the humor. I wonder if Noemi is going to get a book🤔
Nek Mills has the amazing ability to write unhinged men so well. Jules had me laughing and cackling through this entire book, but while he may be funny, he did not take his self-appointed job of looking after Bridgette lightly. Bridgette had a very hard life, but once she found her people, they didn’t play about her. Watching her grow and he was such an amazing thing throughout this book.
Welp. I was kind of side-eyeing Nek when reading about the rituals. But it wasn’t going to deter me from finishing this book. He loved Bridgette so much!! He made sure her mental was top priority. I’m happy their were both each other’s peace. I’m also very happy about the ending! Everyone got what their deserved and more!!!
Poor Bridgette went through so much! I felt so many emotions! Jules/Boko was truly a mess. He rode for her and eventually fell head over heels for her! He made everyone who violated her pay with their life! The last deed done to Denise was hilarious! The Boudreaux aren't to be played with. In the end its really not worth it, you will get got! Great read!
Reading the Mills Brothers Series reminded me I never finished the Boudreaux Mafia books—so I circled back, and whew… I think I may have found another book boyfriend in Jules “Boko” Boudreaux. 😮💨
It was the way he used darkness to protect his light—Bunny—that got me. I love a man who will create a graveyard behind me without hesitation. That protective energy? Top tier. 🖤
This was a wild story. Jules and Bridgett both are made for each other. He’s beyond unhinged but he loves his girl. This was a good book and definitely a good follow I- to the first book.
This was a hard book to listen to but I loved it. Jules is the perfect person for Bridget! Karma should’ve been his name because he was handing it out, like a church mother with peppermint. 10/10 recommend but keep some tissue close by!
The torment that Bridgette experienced was beyond what I expected. Jules, or should I say, Boko really popped out on everyone that harmed his Bunny and made them suffer beyond suffering. I appreciated that he took his time with her, made her feel safe and loved, and didn't play in her face when it came to really loving her. Anyone could get a trip to the House of Horrors when it came to Bunny. Dre really was on the main line messing around with Jules, poor thing was a whole assassin in the streets, but his crazy cousin had him praying like a Saint! I loved how the Boudreaux family, as well as Nicky and Luca protected and loved on Bridgette. I'm hoping Noemi is next, plus I need to see what's happening in the family. Heavy at times, but a good solid read.
Something’s are out of our control but there’s no one to blame. No one regardless of age should be sexually assaulted! Everyone will sooner or later show their true color and intentions. Seeking help that’s needed should never be frowned upon. With trauma comes pain, wild thoughts and uncertainty but with the right support and help, light, healing & love can and will come. Healing is a working progress. Love is kind, soft, healthy and understanding. Let’s chat!!!
Bridgette, was dealt cards that no woman should have to deal with and they that took her through things in life no woman should ever have to endure. My heart went out to her as it did for Gabby. Like there are really sick people in the world 🫣! Trying To heal after what she been through would be hard for anyone but one thing she had was a village with the leader being Jules🥰! Though he wasn’t the average man when it comes to protecting🤭 he protected her at all cost and at all times. She was so confused on how he was able to locate all that cause her harm but once things knew not to do was to question it😔! The less she knew was for the best. Though my girl did her best to not fall for him but let’s be honest, the way this man showed up, cut up and played no games about her, it was only a matter of time 🤭🥰! Let’s not forget how when she was going through her healing, she started to become the woman she was meant to be and ya girl was just as unstable a Jules 🫣🤭 and I was here for it all. The way Jules family loved on her pulled at my emotions as it was the sweetest ever 🥹 and she deserved it all. Let talk about her mother, at first I was unsure of the part she played but by the end 🥰🥰 her mother became alright with me.
Jules or should I say Boko was that 🥷🏽 off top and I love him down🤭! Though he not all there 🤣 he’s was a sweetheart. The way he was behind Bridgette was everything! From the first time he met her he knew he had to protect her. He seen her at her worst and vowed to assist her to becoming her best. Where are men like him? Of course minus his other side🤣! The way this man vowed to bring all that harmed her to their knees so she can start living her life without fear 🤭🥰 listen, I need someone like him in my life. Oh but what he wasn’t expecting was to fall in love with her and when that happened NO one was safe from him or should I say Boko. Once his feelings turned to being in love with her and knowing she was mentally damaged, it all changed to something worst when he seen the physical damage and understand her even more 😡, no one was safe! Though black magic was his choice of payback, it takes a lot from him mentally but the way he didn’t care about how it would affect him had me misty eyed 🥹! He even went against Zoo and we all know that’s a NO NO🫣🥹! He didn’t care about any consequences when it came to his Bunny! Now can I mention how people being turned to birds, dogs and their minds playing tricks on them left me beyond speechless🤣! I can honestly keep talking about Jules as he now book bae from this series but I’ll stop!
The entire family was standing 10 toes down for Bunny, but Lucas was the main one. He was there to protect her when Jules couldn’t. This main went against and checked Jules when it came to her. Let not forget he reminded him that Zoo signed his check 🤭🤣 so he loyalty was to Bunny before anyone ones. Like stop playing with this man🤣! What started out as a job turned into so much more. She became his little sister and he played no games about her. I loved their relationship 🥰!
The update on Gabby and Rosier was needed. Them two still barely coming up for air🤣! However the fact they still in their honeymoon stages🤏🏾! Gabby slightly annoyed me cause she was pressing Bunny to talk to her but glad she finally understood she had to allow her to speak when she was ready. Oh but when she checked both Bunny & Jules was definitely needed🤭. Then the way Rosier was ready for whatever and not as the head of the family but as a brother to both🥰. Both Gabby & Rosier energy was everything 🥰!
Now I thought I loved Rosier book but sorry Jules had replaced that one. This was an emotional read but so dang good. The way Nek touched on real life issues and trauma 🤏🏾🥰! Though it’s not talked about much but black magic is real and the way she described its actions 🤏🏾🥰! I loved everything about the read from the love, healing and family. Ok, so I’m heading over to book 1 of the Mills Brothers cause the way Mayor acting has me wanting to know what he’s into.
Originally, I rated this 4.5 stars, but honestly? I’m bumping it up to 4.75 stars. This book was really, really good.
Let me start with my one major frustration. If you’re representing a specific culture in a book especially one that includes language elements I truly believe narrators should receive pronunciation coaching. As someone of Haitian descent, hearing Creole spoken incorrectly in the audiobook was distracting. I understand that it isn’t the narrators’ native language, but with guidance and repetition, it could have sounded much more natural. Instead, some of the Creole moments felt butchered, and that pulled me out of the story a bit.
That said, I really appreciated how the author handled Vodou in this story. There’s so much stigma around it being portrayed as purely dark or evil, and while it can be dark depending on how it’s used, it’s also deeply cultural and complex. The way Nek Mills added humor to those elements felt authentic and refreshing. The scene where he turned her into a bird had me laughing so hard. It reminded me of growing up hearing Haitian parents tell those wild cultural stories that sound unbelievable but are told with complete seriousness. That nostalgia really hit for me.
Now, the characters.
Jules is absolutely my man. I loved him in book one, but in his own story he’s even better. He’s unhinged in the most entertaining way possible completely himself, no filter, no pretending. What you see is what you get every single time, and I love that consistency. He’s chaotic, funny, a little evil, and honestly? Perfect.
Bridget’s story carries a lot of darkness, pain, and emotional weight. Watching her finally get someone who loves and protects her the way she deserves was incredibly satisfying. She deserved happiness, and she got a man willing to destroy entire bloodlines for her peace. That level of devotion? Exactly what she needed.
Also, I have one lingering question: What is it with these brothers and red sauce? Why does every single one of them have beef with red sauce? I don’t know why that detail keeps making me laugh, but it does.
Despite my issues with the Creole pronunciation in the audiobook, I truly loved this story. I finished it and immediately started book three which tells you everything you need to know.
This was emotional, funny, chaotic, and deeply entertaining. I can definitely see myself revisiting this series again.
❛❜Leaving the salon, I couldn’t help but smile at how far I’ve come. I’m no longer timid and hiding myself from the world. I’m a survivor, and I will carry myself as such. Not many people have overcome the things that I have, and I will never take that for granted again.❛❜
❛❜The life of a killer can be heavy, and if you let the darkness consume you for too long, you may end up getting lost in it forever. For Bridgette, I will never think twice about doing what needs to be done to make sure she keeps that light in her eyes and smile on her face. There will come a time when I will hang up my ceremonial robe, but in the meantime, I have no problems with popping out and showing niggas I’m really 𝘏𝘐𝘔..❛❜
is it really 'crazy' if he’s just protecting his woman? asking for a friend...
i am officially unwell! Jules and Bridgette have completely taken over my head, and i’m not even trying to move on.
𝚖𝚢 𝚛𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
𝙱𝚛𝚒𝚍𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚝𝚎’𝚜 𝚓𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚗𝚎𝚢: my heart absolutely ached for her. Her story is incredibly heavy and sad; there were so many moments where i just wanted to reach through the pages and give her the biggest hug🥺 seeing Jules be so patient and protective, making her feel safe while giving her the space she needed, was everything
𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 𝚘𝚏 𝙹𝚞𝚕𝚎𝚜: : the way he protected her was everything. he made her feel safe without demanding answers or making her uncomfortable. he knew exactly when to lean in and when to give her space—and the nickname 'bunny'? 😌🐰 my heart.
𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙱𝚘𝚞𝚍𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚞𝚡 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚊𝚛𝚍: these Boudreaux men are 'crazy' in the best way possible. if protecting your family means making people pay for their sins through the dark arts... then i guess i’m team Crazy. 🤷🏽♀️🖤
i’ve never read a MMC who practices black magic before, and honestly, Jules Boudreaux has me reconsidering everything. It added such a dark, unique layer to the story that i was NOT expecting but ended up obsessing over.
that ending had me laughing because i was so shocked, Denise should’ve kept her mouth shut and listen😭. i’m officially in a Jules & Bridgette hangover. wish me luck getting them out of my head! 🥂✨ [ i don’t want to btw ]
4.5 stars "I just don't know what my purpose in life is." "I stared into his eyes and saw al the love he has for me."
This was definitely a heavier read compared to book 1, so please check content and trigger warnings before reading this! I have to give the voice narrators their tens for sure, for telling this story with the emotion and intense feelings all throughout the story! Truly it is a gem to listen to the audio and it is the cherry on top! I was so immersed with the story telling and immersed with Jules and his way handling business and getting revenge on behalf of Bunny aka Bridgette. His character is dark and he does not play any games regarding Bridgette, and his way of protecting her is extremely intense. I was shocked and surprised at how the author was able to incorporate a higher being and it's connection to Jules and how he takes care of business. Some scenes were down right scary, and honestly made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, that is how intense some of the scenes are. At Jules core I love that he was such a teddy bear and was always a safe space for Bridgette and truly was the light in her life, his patience, care, attentiveness, and protection was beautiful to read and it made me happy that her character finally experiences a love that she deserves. Bridgette is a strong survivor and I think the author provided such a journey of growth and address her traumas in a way that helped her overcome it and at a pace that worked best for her. Her journey is a heavy one and some scenes are extremely sad, but the author did a phenomenal job exposing the ugly horrors of what happens to the vulnerable and how the system does not work to help or find them.
THIS ONE WAS A LOT. LIKE A WHOLE LOT OF DARKNESS. BRIDGETTE’S CHILDHOOD TOOK ME BACK TO MY OWN. I WISH I HAD A JULES TO MAKE THAT BIG AZZ PEDOPHILE AND HIS TRIFLING AZZ FAMILY PAY FOR ISH HE DID TO ME. MY HEART BROKE FOR HER EVEN MORE WHEN SHE TOLD JULES AND HER THERAPIST THE SADISTIC ISH THAT BIH AZZ PEACE OF ISH CARLSON AND THOSE MEN DID TO HER💔🤬🤬🤬. HER RUNNING INTO ELANA HAS ME HOLLERING 🤣🤣🤣. BUT WHEN THAT PEDO FRANK SHOWED UP I LOST IT. BUT BESTIE LUCA MADE SURE HIM AND NICKY FOUND THAT BIH AND GAVE HIM A DOSE OF HIS OWN MEDICINE👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. TO KNOW THAT THAT BIH DENISE WAS THE REASON HE FOUND HER, I HAD NO SYMPATHY FOR THAT BIRD BRAIN AZZ BIH. I WAS SO PROUD OF BUNNY AND THE WAY SHE SHOWED TF OUT ON THAT BIH NINJA. THE ICING ON THE CAKE WAS JULES MAKING SURE THAT PEACE OF TRASH GOT DONE THE SAME WAY HE DID BUNNY🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽.
HER REUNITING WITH HER MOM AND THEN BEING ABLE TO REPAIR THEIR RELATIONSHIP AND GET HEALING THROUGH THERAPY IS SOMETHING I ALWAYS WANTED, BUT NEVER GOT WITH MY OWN MOM BEFORE SHE LOST HER BATTLE WITH CANCER IN MARCH 💔. SO THAT MADE ME EXTREMELY HAPPY🫶🏽
THIS WHOLE FAMILY KEPT ME LAUGHING, ESPECIALLY DRE AND JULES🤦🏽♀️. THE LAUGHTER WAS MOST DEFINITELY NEEDED
I FREAKING LOVED ME SOME JULES SEXY AZZ😍😜!!! THAT MAN PLAYED NO MOTHERFUDGESICKLESTIX GAMES ABOUT HIS BUNNY. I LOVED THAT ALTHOUGH SHE THOUGHT ONCE SHE BATTED IT ALL HE’D NO LONGER WANT HER, IT MADE HIM FALL DEEPER IN LOVE WITH HER. SHE WAS SO FREAKING STRONG AND DESPITE THE DARKNESS, I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THEIR JOURNEY TO HEALING AND LOVE🤎
First let me say… Dre is ME!!!! 🤣🤣🤣 when he started to recite the 23rd Psalm I damn near choked, I laughed so hard. Second… “since you want to act like a bird brain bi!$h you should be one!” Is a BAR! Chefs kiss. 💋 🤣
Seriously… (spoilers) Whew chile! This book was heavy. I was crying my eyes out 7% in. B went through it and it reminded me how cruel some men and women can be. This book reminded me of why it’s still so unsafe to be a woman. I knew it would take me through it though which is why it took me ssooooo long to consider reading it. I wasn’t initially but it kept popping up so i said “what the hell” and I’m glad I did. I’m not gon lie I skipped through parts of her recounts of the trauma but I still enjoyed the story in its fullness. Gabby is the REALEST! Friends like her is why so many lives are saved. 🥹 …Baby Jules is definitely certifiably. Homie was straight up nuts but he did NOT play about Bunny. Being a New Orleans girl, his beliefs weren’t surprising but once again… I’m definitely Dre because NOPE! 🙅🏾♀️🙂↔️. He made them bark like a dog behind his girl 😂. My favorites though… Mr. Mayor and the Bird! Chile he made that girl a damn canary, caged her and sat her on his dresser!!! 😳I screamed! 😂
I don’t leave reviews. My attention span just isn’t set up for this but this was amazing.10/10 recommend but proceed with extreme caution ⚠️
This story? Whew. It dragged me straight into the deep end and held me under in the best way possible. Bridgette’s pain was raw, visceral, and at times hard to sit with. But that’s what made her strength so magnetic. She wasn’t written to be pitied she was built to survive, and survive she did. Every. Single. Time.
And then there’s Jules. Or Boko. Or... problematic prince of vengeance with a soft spot for one woman only. Listen Jules is chaos wrapped in devotion. Unapologetically violent, deeply protective, and surprisingly tender when it comes to Bridgette. He didn't just rescue her; he saw her. Loved her without flinching. And when I say nobody was safe if they even breathed wrong in her direction? I mean it. Man turned revenge into a high art.
Dre had me cackling every time he had to stand in Jules’ spiritual blast zone. Like sir, do you feel the brimstone? I would’ve had holy water in a travel bottle if I had to hang with Boko too. But their family dynamic? Unmatched. From the Boudreauxs to Nicky and Luca, this crew rides hard for theirs and doesn’t ask for permission to protect what’s sacred.
This book is heavy, no doubt. The trauma doesn’t flinch, and neither does the healing. But the pacing, the character arcs, and the way love shows up as both war and worship? I devoured it.
Jules might be mad, but he’s her madness. And Bridgette? She’s the reason you keep reading. I’ll be waiting not-so-patiently to see who’s next (Noemi, I see you).
Bold. Bloody. Beautiful. Four stars and a front row seat to the House of Horrors from me.
So, I loved how Jules loved Bridgette. Their love story was nice. With that said, there were a few things that caused me to pause.
Here come spoilers so stop reading if you haven’t read the book yet.
For one, Jules found Bridgette in the tub and carried her to the hospital but he acted like when she showed her scars to him that was his first time seeing them. If he found her naked, he saw them already so why was he so shocked?
Secondly, I read the trigger warning for the voodoo but I didn’t know I’d have to pray and skip some parts because he actually casting real spells. Uh uh. 😳
Third, some of the spells were too far fetched and more sci-fi or fantasy than reality. Those aren’t my genres of choice so I was disappointed that they were present in this book.
Finally, both main characters are millionaires. If Bridgettes scars were an issue for her, she couldn’t get them fixed? No dermatologist? No plastic surgeon? No voodoo concoction to cause them to disappear? If you can make women dogs and birds, surely Jules can remove scars. 🤷🏾♀️ Outside of that, I’m ready to move on to Dre’s book. Thankfully he isn’t with the voodoo and loves the Lord. I can rock with that.

This was really good!! This story highlighted the trauma and mental anguish SA abuse survivors have experienced as well as diving into the realm of human trafficking. Bridgette survived a most horrific experience and with the help of Jules and family, overcame the trauma. Jules was extremely patient, bossy, and protective of Bridgette. To the point that he placed hexes on people (loved every spell!!). My absolute favorite spell was making Denise into a bird 🤣🤣🤣🤣, hilarious!!!! This story is a page turner, literally from the moment you start reading it you will not be able to put it down. I loved how Jules loved on his Bunny, loved how Bridgette found her strength in the end regarding her mother and attackers. This was a full circle story from extreme trauma to love and light. And lastly, these characters are hilarious 😂. The interactions between Dre and Jules were everything!!!
Dreaux: The Silent Killer was nothing short of a really good read. If you loved Zoo, you definitely would enjoy Jules. Jules really surprised me. He was always seen as the hard, untouchable one, but this story showed he knew exactly when to be soft and when to be “Boko.” And when it came to handling business? He had no problem “x”ing somebody out for looking at him crazy. The story felt heavy because of all the sinister things he had going on — this man was intense and a little insane, but honestly, that came from everything he’s seen and experienced.
Bridgette went through so much, and my heart hurt for her. What I loved most was how Jules showed up for her. In his own way, he protected her, helped her rebuild, and made sure she was safe — even if his methods were extreme. Being an empath, he felt things deeply, and that’s part of why he moved the way he did.
I’m God-fearing and would never put anything above Him, but in some ways Jules played “God” for the people he loved most — deciding outcomes and protecting them at all costs. Dark, layered, and emotional. Jules definitely left his mark.
Now, let me be honest with you, I did not think that I would like this book at all because it contained voodoo practices. I'm not into reading about supernatural things or voodoo. In saying this, the author tastefully incorporated this into the story. Plus, it was also used to avenge Bridgette.
What started out as a save mission, protection, and offing everyone in sighted turned into something much more. I loved how Jules built Bridgette up and made her feel comfortable with her past, present l, and future. He knew that she was fragile and that he was patient with her. He did not keep her in the dark and actually included her in the punishment of others.
I don't know if I believe Bridgette mother. There is no way that she didn't know her husband was abusing her daughter. I was kind of peeved with how easily it was for Bridgette to believe her, but she missed her mother.
