Quella appena conclusa é stata una delle letture più dolorose che io ricordi. Ho provato nelle mie viscere le angosce e le tribolazioni del condannato, pregando affinché arrivassero le quattro, l’ora dell’esecuzione. Ancora faccio fatica a comprendere come sia possibile mutare, in maniera così realistica, il sentimento in inchiostro e ciò non può far altro che farmi ancor più apprezzare Hugo come profondo conoscitore delle sofferenze umane. In poco più di 100 pagine Hugo ha creato la più grande opera di empatia che credo oggi si possa leggere. Un uomo che si scopre cattivo e a cui non viene data la possibilità di riscattarsi é degno di pietà!
