During a routine patrol along the Yakima River, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officer Luke McCain encounters a terrified young woman fleeing a man she believes killed two people in a homeless camp in Seattle. Her story convinces Luke to contact his wife, FBI Special Agent Sara McCain, who goes to work with Seattle Police to identify and locate the killer before he finds the woman and makes the potential witness his next victim.
Meanwhile, Luke uncovers a group illegally excavating prehistoric mammoth bones on state land. As he and his dog Jack confront the armed diggers, Sara’s case reveals a chilling link between a possible serial killer and the witness’s shadowy pursuer. Their investigations collide in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, where Luke and Sara must stop a calculating killer and expose greed-driven criminals threatening history itself.
Praise for Cascade Witness: "Outdoors writer Rob Phillips produces yet another page-turner, further demonstrating his extensive, first-hand knowledge of central Washington State’s backcountry and his mastery of the quick and compelling thrill ride of a suspenseful read. . . . You don’t have to read Cascade Witness in one sitting, but you’ll want to." --Adriana Janovich, Associate Editor of Washington State Magazine and author of Unique Eats and Eateries of Spokane
"From the streets of Seattle to the backwoods of the Cascades, Rob wraps intrigue, gripping storylines and memorable characters into this thriller that brings Luke McCain and his wife Sara together to solve another riveting mystery. --Trey Carskadon, outdoor writer
Rob Phillips is an excellent outdoors writer. He vividly describes the landscape and people while creating clever plot lines around game warden Luke McCain. I was a little hesitant when I read that the main story in this book follows a killer who is murdering homeless people in Seattle. But, Phillips proves up to the task. He creatively has multiple crimes (one with McCain in Yakima in addition to the murders in Seattle) and slowly melds the two storylines throughout the book. Suspense, excellent characters, an exciting end, and the trust Yellow Lab Jack make this one of the best Luke McCain books.
The latest Luke McCain novel is another winner. Of course, as my brother is the author, I always have to give the five-star rating, don't I?
In this endeavor, the author has given Luke's wife (Sara) a much more prominent role. It's interesting to read as the couple each work cooperatively on some aspects of two different cases.
As is always the case with the Luke stories, you'll encounter sights and scenes from across the state of Washington. The author has given the reader very timely challenges in the form of possible ancient bones, along with various individuals who live without homes.
From the start of the book, the reader is presented with the familiar characters found in the series. But, you can pick up and read any of the eight books in any sequence.
Nicely done, so enjoyed Luke and Sara working pretty much together on this case. Plus the storyline brings attention to homeless crisis in this country. I will be glad when another mystery adventure of these two and faithful pooch becomes available. Thanks for the good read.
Another really good read. I didn’t like it as much as his others but this was only because of the setting. I prefer the wilderness stories where Luke is roaming out with Jack, solving forest ranger type crimes. But this was still a five-star book for me, regardless of the subject not being completely my favorite.
I have read all of Rob Phillips' books, and I think that this was his best one yet. I enjoyed all of the twists and turns, and it was great that Luke and Sara were able to work together. I am already looking forward to reading the next one.
I have read several books written by the author, and every one has been an excellent, interesting read. They deal with various criminal activities, but the author avoids the swearing so common to books of this genre.
I enjoyed the book. Petty much a straight forward mystery. Flowed nicely, characters well define. Was a little surprised that there was no real surprise ending. I look forward to the next Luke McCain boot.
I enjoyed the depth of the description of the characters and the way they were brought to life. The storyline was engaging and I appreciated the references to the homeless issues that are a fact of life. All of these books have been engaging and entertaining.
There's nothing better than a dog and a cute girl and an FBI agent and a wildlife ranger. Add an involved plot with a satisfying ending for real pleasure.
Mr Phillips writes a very interesting and believable story. I've read all of the books in this series and have found them all very entertaining. So will you.
An excellent series. Believable characters and highly interesting plots make for a read that is difficult to put down. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
