The Marigold Killer

Rate this book
10 years ago Marigold and Max were friends, her parents were alive, no one knew the family secrets and she was innocent.

Now she is out to kill the people responsible for her parents death and he is the lead detective on the case. Will their love for one another be stronger than the will to get revenge?

Marigold is no longer the girl Max once knew. She’s all curves and danger, her lips a lethal temptation, her body a weapon of seduction. Every move she makes is calculated, every glance a silent promise of pleasure—or pain. She’s hunting the people who took everything from her, and Max, now Detective Sánchez, is standing in her way.

But Max isn’t just standing. He’s chasing her, cornering her, daring her. His voice is a growl that makes her thighs clench, his touch a searing reminder of the boy she once craved—and the man who now owns her every dark thought.

The line between hunter and hunted blurs as their chemistry ignites. Each stolen kiss turns feral, each encounter dripping with raw heat. But vengeance doesn’t play fair, and their passion might burn them alive before she gets her revenge—or before Max takes her down, body and soul.

Marigold, orphaned at 12, enjoys killing. So do her accomplices. But they require justification. Fortunately for them they have that. Unfortunately for their victims, they get very mangled up. And doubly unfortunate for both, the kill list is becoming questionable.

This cast of misfits have a hard time knowing who to trust. And all sorts of trouble ensues. I liked just about all the characters, villains and all. If they are going to get it on, I’m glad they found a refreshing way to go about it. I’m hard to shock, but some scenes at least crammed the ceiling. And the death toll was impressive.

I was describing this book to a friend as a Mexican version of Kill Bill: a bloodythirsty quest for revenge. Although technically it was set in El Paso, Texas and across the border in Cuidad Juarez, Mexico. The bonus was that the Spanish dialogue was translated into English which was perfect for my beginners level in that language.

On language, you may need to be forgiving of some of the errors. But then again, the characters probably spoke that way anyway.

I have saved the next book in the series on my list ready for 1 December 2025. People who like Willy Vlautin books may enjoy this.

I don't normally read mystery books but this one was pretty good. I wish we got more with the character Diego. And the introduction of the twins felt very short and i wish they had more of a story line as well. I feel like a lot more could have been done with a few of the characters. I did like the marigolds and how they were left, i think it was very unique and i loved it. overall I enjoyed this book and will be recommending to others.

Ummmm definitely not what I expected. This book had so much of a broad spectrum potential. But, in conclusion, just not for me.

I'm so mad at this book because it had so much potential but did not deliver. Let's start with the superficial aspect of the book, there are too many grammatical mistakes and things in the syntax that didn't make sense. Sometimes I had to read a paragraph several times to understand who was were and did what.

The plot. I wish we could've had a lot more of Max and Marigold's childhood because there is a lot that we don't understand and the dynamic wouldn't have been as confusing if we'd seen more of their interactions as children. I still don't know if they liked each other as kids and were friends or if they've always had some kind of animosity between them. And that should be clear for us to understand were things start at the beginning of the book. Also, some things don't seem believable. (Spoiler alert: The connection between Marigold's name and the Marigold killer was really interesting but a little too easy and there's no way the police didn't catch that, especially knowing Marigold's familial background. As well as Marigold being the one in "charge" of her family's business but being so easily manipulated by her uncle, she's not in charge of anything.)

To go with that, the book is way too short. It's a dark story, with dark themes, and because the book is so short I don't think we have time to see a real progression in the story and the relationship between the MMC and the FMC. Because of that (coupled with the fact that we don't know much about who they were as children/teenagers) a lot of elements of the plots don't make sense and feel like they were just written to make the book dark when in fact there was nothing to start with that justified certain turns of events (spoiler alert: Max all of a sudden being okay with his family's cannibalistic activities and even taking part in it). Also, because of it, there wasn't time to build tension and the smut felt out of the blue, just there to be there. No real chemistry between the characters.

The atmosphere and the setting of the book were really good though. I genuinely liked it.

This book felt like the first draft of a really good story, in need of a lot more pages and work. I still don't know if I'll be reading book 2.

This book had me convinced that I knew what was going on. Marigolds have always been my favorite flower from the time I was a little girl. Now, I look at them just a little bit differently.
Then it twists the other way, and I have no clue who is who. And what they are actually doing and who they are.
Max & Marigold's relationship will keep you guessing the entire book.
So well written and a great story!
