This was an okay about about the history and the workings of the United States Navy. I am a little biased having served in the U.S. Navy and therefore I rated it 3 stars, though it probably should be rated 2 - 2 1/2 stars.
Basically, the book was broken down into three major sections. The first section was about the history of the Navy from 1775 - 1991. This was broken down into various time frames and specifically focused on what the Navy did during different wars. The second section discusses the state of the current Navy. It explores the surface fleet, (though it does focus on the Navy's aircraft carriers), the submarine fleet and its changing role in the Navy, and the auxiliary vessels and weapons that are necessary for the Navy to function. The third section discusses various navy traditions and museums. Intermixed in the pages are discussions about training and what various jobs are performed in the Navy.
This is a pretty good book, but I found it started to drag on and at times it was difficult to keep my interest in it. The book is certainly a propaganda piece in support of the U.S. Navy, but does offer some interesting facts and stories, and the many of the pictures and paintings that are on the pages are stunning. I think that anyone who has served in the Navy will enjoy it the book, but non Navy personnel may have a difficult time completing it.
