About the author

Since Pernille Ripp was a child growing up in Denmark, she knew she wanted to work with kids. She has loved being a 4th, 5th, and then 7th-grade teacher in the American public school system, as well as a literacy coach for adults. In her co-created teaching spaces, students’ identities are at the center of the explorations that they do, as well as considering how to fight for change.

Recently, Pernille moved home to Denmark where she is expanding her knowledge about children’s development and needs through her work in early childhood education.
She is an international speaker and educator developer, working with educators in need to better learning conditions, literacy instruction, and overall school experiences for children and adults on a global plane. She is also the founder of The Global Read Aloud which has connected millions of students in more than 85 countries. She believes in having the courage to change and even break the rules for the good of kids and education. Besides being with her own family, there is no place she would rather be than standing alongside children and educators fighting for change in the world.

This book is for the teachers/educators or those who are interested in education. The professional development series (Corwin Connected Educators series) brings out books for the educators. This book deals with the idea of empowering stakeholders in the school - students, staff and leaders. 64 page book really gives various aspects of empowering stakeholders. Thought provoking books.

There are differences when working in the Chinese education system, but Pernille Ripp hits on topics in "Empowered Schools, Empowered Students" that students themselves here strongly desire as well as practical points to start with as an elementary EFL teacher. Student voice, empowerment, and ownership must happen in classrooms around the world, and she easily and logically explains why. Many students have expressed opinions in my classes on various topics of teaching, student voice, and technology. I empathize with the students but still respect the Chinese educators because the culture has much of Confucius' "sage on the stage" feel that will be hard to surrender. Ironically some of those colleagues have shared how maybe what we're doing isn't right or modern. Culture and tradition are a couple obstacles, but much of what Ripp suggests are ways to analyze what we do, why, and how to change little by little.

This was the first book of the Corwin Press Connected Educator series that I have read on Peter Dewitt's recommendation, and I'm quite glad I did. Thank you, Peter, and many thanks to Pernille! Keep up the work so that the flame burning inside us educators can spread like wildfire to the students in a global fashion.

Personalization in practice

Mrs. Ripp provides readers with convincing reasons to allow the control of the classroom to shift to students rather than the teacher. Mrs. Ripp examines the justification and obstacles of each of the ideas presented. She provides a classroom-based example of the ideas presented that is based off of her own experience. The book is easy to read and the ideas are easy to implement, if you are ready to shift the balance of power in your own classroom!

I love this book. Pernille has such a unique way of teaching. It is evident that she truly loves her students and wants the very best for them. I'm considering buying several copies of this book for administrator friends of mine because it also speaks to a unique view of administration.

I also highly recommend Pernille's other great book, Passionanate Learners.

I absolutely love Pernille's blog and especially her recent NerdCamp speech. A lot of this book seemed to be geared toward administrators, but it is still an uplifting book for teachers who want to remain "the best they can be".
