"I can't open up. Don't you understand? I'm literally a box. If I open up to anyone, this whole world could be destroyed..."
My worst fear has come to pass. A vicious, sadistic witch has seen the darkness inside me, and he wants it for himself. Christopher Jupiter - the man responsible for the Great Suffocation, the reason why thousands and thousands of my people are dead - he saw the evils. And he wants them.
He's not a powerful witch, but he's smart. Too smart. He already knows what he needs to do to crack me open. Now, it's a deadly race against time to find the artefact he needs so I can destroy it.
But I can't do this by myself. How can I stop Christopher, if I can't even tell Romeo what is inside of me?
The Wolf Vs The Witch is book four in the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth, a hot new Urban Fantasy series by bestselling author Lauretta Hignett.
A raving fangirl for all things paranormal, supernatural, supernormal and fantastical, Lauretta writes fun Urban Fantasy, PNR and Superhero adventures with a dash of sweet romance and humour.
She's a massive fan of Young and New Adult fiction, loves a plot twist, hates cliffhangers, and always keeps her readers on their toes.
When she's not writing, Lauretta enjoys fad diets, sunshine, her two little children, weird craft projects and massive amounts of dark chocolate
My God she's done it again, from the hilariously funny antics of a love lorn murder goose to the tension that's ratched up to twenty, Ms Hignet has snared me once again into a web of tangled emotions that didn't let up until the last page. AND WHAT A RIDE IT WAS. I know whenever I pick up a book from this author it's not only guaranteed I'll have a smile on my face, but somewhere along the line she'll pull the rug out from underneath my feet, leaving me dazed and trying to comprehend how she managed to do it yet again. And brother did she do it with bells on this time. I've loved every adventure Daphne has taken me on, but this one is by far my absolute favourite and after that cliffhanger, I'm literally bursting to know what comes next. Yep Lauretta you have officially killed me here.
Daphne's last run in with the vile, sadistic witch Christopher Jupiter was not a pleasant one. After he captured and relentlessly tortured her, he discovered the darkness that lurks inside her and now he wants it for himself. Knowing he will stop at nothing to possess the evils that she contains, Daphne must stay one step ahead of him and find the ancient artifact he needs to crack her open and destroy it. And with time running out, she'll need all the help she can get, even if she can't tell a soul what resides within her.
My chaotic, funny, smart sunshine girl Daphne is one of a kind in the best way possible, I utterly adore this uniquely different off the wall character with all my heart. Having had a childhood made of nightmares her psyche has split into two, Heart Daphne and Brain Daphne, these two halves of herself help to keep her kind of sane, even if she is constantly arguing with Brain Daphne. But when Daphne gets to meet Romeo's best friend and foster sister Bella, who invokes a lot of mixed feelings within her, it's Brain Daphne who truly shines for me. While Daphne thinks she's possibly suffering from jealousy over the close relationship Bella and Romeo share, Brain Daphne is absolutely relentless in thinking Bella is 'evil' and wants nothing more than to stabby stab her. Watching this inner war play out between the two is vastly entertaining and the way it was written so superb I literally didn't know who I wanted to win more. Yes, Daphne is hands down my favourite character by this author and I'm already counting down the days to her next adventure.
Romeo my dangerously dark, broody storm cloud of emotions has got to new levels of badassery in this book. He's fierce, he's protective but also kind and compassionate when he needs to be. But the thing I love most about him is the simple fact that he has Daphne's back, I mean when a man literally puts his life and duties on hold to shadow the woman he loves to keep her safe, how can you not fall for a guy like that. He also proves time and again why he's the man for her, he gets her, every piece of her, even her fractured psyche, the man is damn near perfection and I'll die on this hill.
And my murder goose Dwayne, who's a moping bundle of love sick feathers had me chuckling at the mess he'd gotten himself into over his love life never fails to bring me joy. But when he comes up with a new version of Marco Polo I literally couldn't breathe as my sides were hurting so much from laughing at him. However, the master of menace is in tip top form when he's needed most showing exactly why he's the best alpha a girl can have.
I'm already having withdrawal symptoms from this series and book 5 can't come quick enough for me so if you haven't yet read any of Daphne's series do yourself a favour and go read today. I promise you, you'll love it. 10/10 Highly recommend 😁
As this series moves on, I get more annoyed with the commentary between her brain and her heart. I had hoped early on that it was her actual wolf that she was speaking to, but apparently not. The romance is immensely too slow for me. I find myself skimming so much of these books to either get to the fighting parts or the actual parts of the books that are good. I am afraid that I may be finished or I might just skip to the last book and hope for the best. I don't recommend the series unless you like personal banter that goes on far too much and a slow burn that even in book 4 has gone no where. I really am not sure how anyone could rate this series a five star, but that is just me and maybe it is just not my cup of tea.
I love Daphne! I know I say this about every book Lauretta Hignett book, but it's true, I think this is the best one yet!
Daphne is such a complicated character. She's mad. Completely and utterly unhinged, but she lets her heart lead, and it leads her to true love, kindness, and understanding. However, step out of line and she has no problem stabbing you.
Bring in the evil witch. He has discovered what complete darkness is inside of Daphne, and he's determined to steal it to gain what he's always lacked, true power. The race is on. Will Daphne and co find the magical item and stop him before he unleashes the evils inside of her?
Wow. If you love nonstop action, quirky characters, and a well written mad woman, you'll adore this series. Throw in a chaos god who moonlights as a goose alpha, and you won't be able to resist the fun!
I adore this series and am salty Lauretta is a human being and not a romance ATM spitting out glorious stories on command. Daphne is amazing but forgets her awesomeness. Romeo is all growly and possessive but it works.
Note to author, please tell me you have a plan to roast Judy? I have dreamed of how satisfying this will be. Also Cindy and Pru need s moment.
I am always very eager to start a new book by this author, (and I’ll explain why in a moment) and this book was one that I was excited to read. Heart Daphne is finding it harder to listen to Brain Daphne, especially because in this latest when she’s introduced to Romeo’s sister by another mister in the hunt to stop Christopher’s plot to get Daphne’s darkness. This author has become a top 20 for me because of her enthralling prose, interesting plots and character, and just how much darn fun her books are. This latest is no exception, and it was a great ride…and throw a couple of surprises your way. More, please! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I have enjoyed this series so far, but this latest installment felt very bloated. I even skimmed through a good deal of the middle section. I liked the ending, just not the journey.
Lauretta's superb penmanship and her impeccable flair in storytelling leaves me in a massive conundrum, do I laugh or do I go "awww". Oh the reason? Well flip, that's easy to explain! A love sick, depressed Dwayne is the reason! I adore him and his, ummmm, I'll call them eccentricities....but my word was I struggling to hold back the giggles of a honking, sniffing duck! Yes, he's a duck but a very VERY special duck, he's kind of a god. See? Laugh or not? And that's only in the first few pages! I'm not sure how Lauretta manages to keep a lightheartedness to a very intense story but she does, superbly. Her prose has an almost evocative effect on me, settling into my very being, I can't seem to get enough of it. Her stories filled with a realism she threads through all her books, the experiences, the trials, of many of her characters resonate with me. You know what they say about a good thing, one can never get enough....
Romeo, oh sigh.... Romeo has b*lls of steel, he's powerful, he upholds the law, he won't allow anyone or anything to dictate to him yet he's the most caring and passionate person there is. Heck, he takes the words "and forsaking all others" to a new level of awesomeness. Even though he's not betrothed nor married to Daphne, he sees her for who she is, he gets her, he adores her, he's even 'forsaking" on his duties for Daphne. Now that's my kinda guy, the all in kind, which he certainly is!
Complex, tormented, redeemed, insecure, afraid, fierce, kooky, loyal, protective, incredibly smart, all of which describe Daphne, a dichotomous character if ever there was one. Yeah, you'll get it once you've read the book and series, her "two halves" are at constant "war" with each other. With what she went through, from a child to being in dangerous other realms, is a wonder she's not completely looney. She's has a MAJOR issue because of her... experiences but consciously she knows she has to make herself whole, to trust, to feel. As "brain" Daphne mentioned in one of "her" more lucid moments, "we need to learn to let ourselves feel loved". Daphne evokes EVERY emotion in me, Lauretta has created a character that is tangibly multi faceted, palpably endearing, all round amazing.
Oh my word the tension! It ramps up slowly throughout, but one scene where Daphne attempts to circumvent the "hold" she had placed on her, my breathing was as jaggered as if I'd gone 5 rounds with Mike Tyson! I came out of that encounter battered and bruised, just as much as Daphne, with tears blurring my vision. THAT is how immersive Lauretta's words are, I wasn't only immersed, I was completely submerged...and the way she tosses the characters around, the shocks and twists I encounter along the way, glory be, I didn't know my ar*e from my elbow! I was just as torn about Bella as Daphne was, one part was saying "she's cool" the other part was screaming as loudly as briain Daphne. I was a pawn in this authors hand, she was moving me across her chessboard with the skill of a master. So profoundly riveted was I, I HEARD Lauretta's crackle as my mouth opened and closed in stupor... she got me, she got me good! And then she turned around and did it again! Like whoa! I was like Meryl Streep in Death Becomes Her, my head spun backwards!
I was so excited to read this book, I almost made the fatal error of starting it just after 11pm and stopped myself, barely, because...I KNEW I wouldn't be able to put it down, I KNEW I'd get no sleep until I'd read the final word and I was so right! I literally sucked it in in one sitting! So, fair warning, NOT TO BE STARTED AT NIGHT if you have any hope of sleeping...
Picture this. You go on your first proper holiday for quite a while, get to your destination and get hit by a tropical cyclone. All your glorious, meticulously planned adventures are washed out to sea, dumped on and churned up by massive waves. Everything around you is closed and you’re bombarded with constant emergency warnings. Energy is low and anxiety is high. As you can imagine there wasn’t a lot to smile about until I checked my email and found something that brought a huge grin to my face. The Wolf and the Witch was sitting there like a gift from the heavens. Nothing else could distract me from the current situation like catching up on what’s happening with Daphne , Dwayne and the gang.
After the messy battle with the former shifter alpha Alex Minoff, the new alpha Lennox is still (unsuccessfully)trying to get into her pants and make her his princess . Daphne is right back in the thick of it at work dealing with a terrible dryad mother(don’t worry Dwayne is there to uh, ‘assist’ in his own special way) as well as the usual goings on in the office(I’m looking at you Judy). Poor Myf is struggling with her dragon self and trying to drown out the the trauma of her past with wine and whiskey , which unfortunately leads to her taking it all out on her bestie roommate. Myf’s not the only one down in the dumps, the god of chaos , alpha of the alphas , battle goose Dwayne, is heartbroken and has the mother of all hangovers after his latest squeeze, the crazy, fae princess Asherah has gathered up her sex toys and gone back to Faerie. Daphne and Romeo are also trying to work out the Christopher Jupiter of it all and have to figure out a way to solve the problem without actually talking about the problem. They have their work cut out for them, lucky Rome’s childhood friend and foster sister is around to help. Or is it not so lucky as heart Daphne has to deal with a touch of jealousy and brain Daphne is having very strong feelings about said foster sister. As usual nothing is ever simple in the Hidden City and the gang have their work cut out for them. A shocking ending has me eagerly anticipating what’s happening next in The Wolf vs The Monster.
Lauretta Hignett never fails to keep me engaged with her plot driven storyline’s and I will die on the hill that her ability to write characters that are tough yet vulnerable, caring but fierce, mostly good but sometimes morally grey is unmatched.
Do yourself a favour and if you haven’t already started this series, get cracking! You won’t regret it.
After getting rid of Alexie Minoff, Daphne is now focusing on Christopher Jupiter. After he tortured and tried to get rid of her, he has seen what is inside of her - and he wants it for himself. Not having a lot of power of his own, he is desperate for what Daphne has and he has the cunning to get it. Now it is a race against time to try to get to a magical artifact before Christopher to save not only Daphne, but the world. I cannot put into words howe much I love Daphne! She is the perfect contradiction. She has such a sweet, caring side and wants to help all the kids with troubled lives. But she also has Brain Daphne, who is stabby and violent prone. She has been listening a little too much to Heart Daphne and it's exciting to see her listen more to Brain Daphne again! She is getting her intuition back and merging her personalities back together. And I adore Romeo! He is so protective and devoted to Daphne and it really shows in this book. He can overcome anything (literally) with his devotion to her! And Dwayne... poor heartbroken and drunk Dwayne lol. With Asherah visiting family he has been taking hard and making up for his feelings by drinking. But he still definitely gets in his hilarious moments. I still wish I had my own m*rder goose! We don't get a lot about Myf this book, but what we do get is as hilarious as Dwayne! We are also introduced to Bella, Romeo's childhood best friend. And Lauretta really does an amazing job at making you wonder what is her deal the entire book! You will definitely form an opinion of this new character and that is all I will say about her! This book is absolutely un-put-downable!! From start to finish there is something pulling you into this story. From chasing Christopher, to finally getting more pieces of Daphne's past and what her darkness is to the final showdown I was glued to this book! And the ending was action packed and full of all sorts of scary creatures! As usual, I thought I would know what was going to happen, but was still completely gobsmacked by the outcome. So many crazy surprises in the last couple chapters! I can't wait for more!
Just a superb story. And that epilogue sets up what will be a momentous tale that I can hardly wait to read when it’s released
Rating: 5⭐️
What an outstanding book. A full out rollercoaster fantasy thriller. Laura Hignett just decided to take all the writing tropes, including science fiction, paranormal, Supernatural and mythological elements, add on some mystery thriller material and romance and stuff to go boom, and you have The Wolf Vs The Witch.
This book finally answers the question what happened to Daphne, what’s in her head, and that’s a fantastic story thread in itself, but still manages to keep this aspect of the series and her character still a bit of a mystery that will flow into the next book.
Hignett’s characters are deeply damaged and traumatized by events in their lives. So we get a Mwf who’s not dealing well with her exposure, her shifter identity, and the clash of opposing traumas from her own past life. She’s a mean drunk and Dwayne the chaos goose and her enabler Alpha, got his own issues.
There’s no scenario, no character that Hignett doesn’t focus on or make a real believable mess of, no matter what situation they’re in or the danger they are facing.
That includes Romeo, his coven, and a new character, his step sister, as well as Daphne, all of whom are chasing down Christopher the powerful witch threatening the world.
There’s no way I’d describe the incredible, somewhat terrifying, often bizarre and always fabulously violent journey that follows, all the way to Greece. It’s got battle scenes, mythological creatures, and great moments. And twists too.
Just a superb story. And that epilogue sets up what will be a momentous tale that I can hardly wait to read when it’s released.
If you love strong women characters, great storytelling, and compelling situations. This is the series for you.
Highly recommended.

This book was SOOO excellent, and so very, very satisfying!! The plotting is fabulous, as always, but ultimately, it's the characters that reallly grab you and pull you in deep.
I'm really thrilled seeing Daphne and Romeo beginning to explore what's between them, and well, Daphne and Brain Daphne seem to be also coming to terms with each other (can I just say here, I adore Brain Daphne!). Also, very oddly, the soul-stealer pigeon Stephen is actually starting to grow on me. He's still a scumsucking pestilence, but ... I'm starting to perk up every time he shows up, LOL!!!
Oh, and in the (extremely unlikely) event I ever get hit on by an undesirable guy, I am TOTALLY going to remember the dead Mom's cats strategy! That is just so rockin', and I swear, I spit my tea across the table when I read it!!
I love Myf, but that poor girl is gonna need a ton of therapy. Seriously. I just want to hold her close and pet her hair and tell her everything is going to be all right.
One thing I just have to say... Judy has to GO! or at least, I really, REALLY want her to get some consequences. Seriously. She really bugs me, and it's just not fair that she gets away with doing nothing, and picking on her coworkers. For everyone, everywhere, who's had to deal with coworkers like this... let's see some revenge! mwah.
On the flip side, I have to also say, I absolutely ADORE the Countess! Yes, she's utterly ruthless and truly, bone-chillingly terrifying... but I still want to be here when I grow up!!!
I finished this book with a sigh of almost-satisfaction (spoilers, can't say more), and I cannot WAIT for the next book!!! I'm well and truly hooked!
Oh my goodness, where to start? Each book in this series is eagerly anticipated and time just HAS to be set aside, as you just won’t want to put the book down!
Having this book released during International Women’s Week is just prefect, serendipitous timing, as Daphne is definitely a woman to be admired. She is fierce, strong, loyal, funny, caring, smart in all the ways that matter and an absolute badass, with a heart of gold.
At the end of the last book Daphne had been tortured by Christopher Jupiter and he was chasing after a way to use her secret to secure the power he craved.
At the start of this book Daphne knows she needs to tell Romeo her secret, yet at the same time knows it’s too dangerous to do so.
SO much happens over the course of the book, as Daphne, Romeo and the team try to stop Christopher from getting the artefact he needs in his quest for power. We meet a new character in the form of Bella, Romeo’s foster sister. Daphne is conflicted about her and so was I. Nothing is ever straight forward and easily resolved in these books though, with lots of twists and keep you guessing moments. Dwayne is not quite at full ‘power’ at the beginning of the book, but he definitely plays his part, does his fair share of ‘chaos level murder goose’ and comes through when he’s needed most.
The story develops into next level danger with a powerful and climatic event, but then again, life is never about smooth paths for Daphne and we’re left wondering…what exactly will happen next?
So, I kinda hated this one, I really did. The plot was utterly predicatable from start to finish, all the "surprises" and "plot twists" telegraphing miles ahead. Even being proven right in the end was not nearly enough to clear the foul taste or untwist the knots in my stomach it left behind.
To add insult to injury so to speak she went ahead and had to insert a freaking love triangle, which I loathe with a firy passion and it wasnt even a very interesting one at that. The whole thing has become bloated with ever more addins from every sort of fantasy, high fantasy, urban fantasy, PNR, pop culture story out there. Total hotchpotch mishmash patchwork skinsuit.
Most of the cast of characters from previous books barely made a token appearance if that. Which was/is really disappointing, seeing as she created all these fun and interesting characters but then uses them for little more than window dressing. So yeah the fun is definitely gone and then it went an ended in a cliffy, although strictly speaking, one of the prongs was entirely expected pretty much from the very beginning of this book. The only surprise really was there being two prongs to this cliffy... Which normally spells the end of a series for me. Halfway through the book I'd already decided to take a break after this one though, so I might pick it up again once the series is complete... who knows...
Another fantastic book! After torturing Daphne, Christopher Jupiter is aware of the darkness inside her and he wants it. Daphne and Romeo are aware that he is looking for something and enlist the help of his coven as well as his foster sister Belle. Daphne is immediately bothered by Belle and her relationship with Romeo but can’t decide if it’s jealousy or something more. While trying to figure out what Christopher is after and stop him from opening a magical door to one of the other realms which would enable him to bring through a god that could get the darkness from inside Daphne, she also has a few other problems on the side. Dwayne is basically suffering from remorse and an unbelievable hangover after his lady friend, the fae princess, has gone home to visit her parents. Myf is becoming a teenage drunk as she tries to recover from being bound and lied to all her life. And that’s not forgetting the new Alpha shifter, Lennox, who believes that Daphne should belong to him. This book has action, suspense, surprises, magic and humour. There is absolutely nothing to complain about in this book. Per normal, I loved every word and can hardly wait for the next one. The ending leaves you wanting the next book immediately.
I've been eagerly awaiting this latest book in the series. Somehow I seemed to have gotten my copy early and couldn't wait any longer to read it. The first part of the book I was so happy to finally have a new book in the series to read you just can't wait to get into it.
You get about halfway through the book and pacing just picks up and doesn't quite. At that point trying to make the book last as long as possible becomes impossible. I'm not going to say anything about the ending of the book other than I enjoyed it. I am now waiting until whenever the next book in the series comes out, which feels like forever.
If you are new to Lauretta Hignett and her universe she's created, do not start with this book. Do yourself a favor and start with Imogen, the immortal. And let me be jealous of your 2+ months of book after book of reading you have ahead of you. I will be waiting, probably not patiently.
I love the author and the stories, just find the explicit detail of trauma triggering
I have read all of Lauretta’s books. I deeply respect the way she has used her incredible imagination to illustrate the impacts (while providing the characters empowering points to reframe their trauma) gendered violence as well as provide educational points to discuss radical feminism, gender norms and toxic masculinity. All done while riding an amazing, action packed, fab female to the rescue storyline.
However, the level of detail given sometimes to traumatic experiences, even just the dialogue (particularly self dialogue), tends to trigger me a bit. After reading a whole book, it leaves a residue that I think I’m better off without.
Daphne is a brilliant character. Alone for.over a decade falling from one hellish dimension to.another she grew up just surviving. Her coping mechanism was to split her mind in two so now.we.have brain Daphne who does all the killing also making the hard decisions and heart Daphne who still looks for the good in the world and.always gives people chance. But with her innate senses people cannot hide their true motives, were you aware feelings had a scent aRound is and she knows them all. Dwayne her guardian goose alpha is missing for most of this but we do get more Romeo...........always good.......as Daphne and he are in a race against time to find a precious artefact before the villainous Christopher Jupiter before he can use.it.to.summon a Deity....................which could end up.destroying the world.......
Don't start reading this book unless you have time to finish it because you won't be putting it down.
This is a 'go without sleep', 'forget to eat', 'holy shit you better hold on' ride.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Daphne is one of the best main characters I've read, and I love her more with every book. She is so many things and they're all awesome... if you're her friend and/or reading her books. Scary shit though if you get her bad side. Plus she's absolutely hilarious.
I can not get enough of this world and I'm here for every little morsel Lauretta will throw at us.
✔️ Action-packed ✔️ Easy to read ✔️ Can't put it down ✔️ Entertaining ✔️ Hilarious ✔️ Superb world building ✔️ Original and fun ✔️ Awesome characters
This could be my favourite Lauretta Hignett book ever (and that is saying something as they are all brilliant!). I’m loving Daphne’s story and could quite happily live in this book forever. The last book left us on a massive cliffhanger and this one does not disappoint. Brain Daphne is in fine form and murderous as ever and the action doesn’t stop. Romeo is perfect, overprotective and growly but knows when to step back and let Daphne use her skills, a perfect blend of Alpha and supportive partner. I can’t wait for the next book. I can absolutely recommend this series for almost anyone, there is a fair bit of bad language but no explicit scenes or trigger warnings. Definitely start at the beginning with The Wolf vs The Vampire if you haven’t read that yet.
When I finished this book I looked at my husband and said "Oooh" and his reply was "Good read then" and I replied "Oh, Yes" with a big smile on my face 😊 I'm loving this series so much 🥰 This book gives us answers to a few questions that you may have had about Daphne and Romeo. And I can tell you that you won't be disappointed 😲 There are so many things happening that makes this book absolutely amazing. Lauretta is an amazing author and manages to pull all the emtions out of me in each book she writes ✍️ I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed when you pick this book up, you'll devour it like I did 📖🥰
Oh yes its time for another action packed binge reading storytime! Strap yourself in!
By now we are all in love with the total badass that is Daphne! Plus the incorrigible brain-daphne and Dwayne. This next installment does not disappoint (well apart from the book hangover you'll be left with it once you've finished and know you've got to wait for the next one). So this adventure picks up right where we left off with Christopher knowing what's inside our hero and wanting it for himself, so queue the magic, drama fuelled scenes, there are epic chase scenes, mythological stuffs, a girl best friend, baddies and laughs... this is an on the edge of your seat, can't stop reading cos you need to know what happens kinda tale! I can't say more as I don't want to spoil it, but you're gonna love it, cos when has Lauretta ever let us down.
So what you doing? Get downloading.. now!! ..before a certain God of Chaos comes to peck you!!
Magically Delicious!! The adventures of darling "dumb" Daphne continue in this delightful new novel! She tries to control the darkness within her while her Brain and Heart battle for control. Alpha goose Dwayne is drunk and down in the dumps and pantry dragon Myf is constantly equally inebriated. Romeo races by her side with magic and muscles galore as she trails a magical artifact. They must find it before the wicked evil witch Christopher Jupiter does! Will Romeo's stepsister, Bella, be a help or a hindrance? Its a race against time, sorcery, and foul blood magic, to save Daphne and the entire world! Definitely 5 stars!
Oh my goodness, STOP what you're doing and read this immediately. This book is the perfect mixture of sweet, scary and stabby, as Daphne and friends continue to try and make their magical neighbourhood safe for all, while also having to save the world from world-domination by the vilest, most power-hungry witch ever to have been spawned.
Daphne and Dwayne are such magnificent characters, definitely amongst the most original and surprising I have ever read, and Romeo is so beautifully tortured that he matches Daphne perfectly.
The side characters sparkle too, lovingly described with such a witty pen. This book is fabulous and fantastic and just freaking awesome.
The fourth instalment of Daphne's story did not disappoint! Things are heating up and reveals are plentiful in this book, we meet Roman's Foster sister and learn more about his early life. The situation with the Jupiter's escalates and Christopher leads the team on a magical mystery tour looking for a magical object. I particularly enjoyed hearing a bit more about Aunt March and our favourite characters from the previous series set in this universe.....dare I say dangling future adventures in their storylines!! ( I can hope!)
I tore through this in one sitting, Lauretta never fails to produce fast paced unique characters who kick ass and take names! 10/10 Would Recommend!
Like with the previous books in the series, this one starts off very slow for me. Actually, was pretty frustrating. I really dislike all of the Brain vs Heart Daphne discussions. Some of the stuff/people she just deals with (looking at you Judy) are beyond frustrating too. The group are in an unbelievable hurry but have time to discuss really stupid/mundane stuff instead of finishing the whole purpose behind their actions (at the time). There was quite a bit of filler in this one also. There are plenty of pivotal moments though. And some discussion points in previous books are at least partially settled in this. Huge hook at the end to bring on the next book.
As an avid sourdough bread baker, I was absolutely tickled to read about the God of Sourdough. I love it so much I may just say a prayer to her next time I feed my starter!! That fun aside, this book is a hilarious, edge of your seat, thriller. Just when I think I couldn’t love the characters, more, I fall more with each book! Please note, Lord Dwyane is absolutely hysterical in this book! Lauretta is a phenomenal story teller and I absolutely love the incorporation of Greek mythology in this series! I whole heartedly recommend this book, this series and this author! I cannot wait for the 5th book. These books and audiobooks are always a must buy for me!
Another high action, unhinged story with Daphne, Romeo and Dwayne as they go after the antagonist from the previous tome. We get more background info about Daphne’s darkness, Dwayne is being himself, and I liked how we see Daphne and Romeo work together to solve the mystery and try to outpace the bad guy.
Even though I didn’t enjoy the girl drama with Bella very much, the rest of the story, plot, world and characters feel so unique to Lauretta Hignett. She manages to write books that have personality, despite being within a very well-known genre. I like the quirkiness of the writing and the particular brand of atypical of Daphne. A very enjoyable read overall.
There’s still more drama in Daphne’s life. She’s trying to keep on top of her day job and helping her friends but she’s afraid that Christopher Jupiter knows her secret. There’s been hints of something big she’s hiding and we get to find out what that is in this book. There’s lots of action, high stakes, craziness, humour and, of course, more of Dwayne. I love Daphne’s personality. As Romeo says, you never quite know what she’s going to say.
And please can someone sort Judy out, she’s a horror!
Lauretta Hignett is one of my favorite authors. Her books are all so good, and her characters are complex, even the "minor" characters. I put "minor" in quotes because none of them are minor at all. Dwayne is one of my favorite characters (out of everything I've read) - he's crude and rude with questionable morals, but his heart is in the right place. I loved him in this book along with Myf, our favorite pantry-dweller. She doesn't feature heavily in this book, but I was happy to see a bit about the after effects of her revelations in the last book.
The situation with Daphne's darkness is explained in this book, and I was so riveted by it that when it was explained, I put off going to bed for quite a while so I wouldn't lie awake wondering about it!
The ending, though, did make me lie awake some thinking about what's next for Daphne, Romeo, Dwayne, and everyone else. I can't wait!
