The Syren's Mutiny #1

El motín de las sirenas

Rate this book

“You’re a very dangerous woman.”
“I know,”
I said, my voice barely over a whisper.
I badly wanted to kiss him. So, I did.

The Syren’s Mutiny
is a dark folklore The Little Mermaid retelling with feminine rage on steroids. It sounds so good, right? Unfortunately, the extremely faced-paced writing and insta-love really ruined it for me.

Brigid is a syren, a murderous mermaid who attacks men’s ships and drags them to their deaths, along with 7 other syrens who are under the control of their queen. When she was a young girl, she was almost saved by a young boy. When ordered to sink a ship, she happens to see him about to die. And she decides to disobey orders and save him instead of kill him. Banished from the rest of the syrens, she joins him in a secretive mission. And then nothing happens 🫥

The premise is great. World building/lore is good. There are the beginnings of found family vibes. There are (Kiera Knightly voice) bloody pirates. But, even though this is marketed as “dark,” the mmc, Caelum is such a soft boy. He’s too righteous for me. I really couldn’t fall for the guy because he’s just too good. He NEEDED to be morally gray. Brigid is fine. She doesn’t really have that much of a personality. She is murderous though, which is fun. I had trouble rooting for the characters because I felt like I didn’t even know them.

I can’t wholeheartedly recommend this, but, maybe you’ll like this more than me.
It has
✨ murderous syren fmc
✨ soft boy mmc
✨ enemies to lovers with a dash of forbidden
✨ only one bed (multiple times)
✨ hurt/comfort
✨ found family (ish)

I must admit I struggled to go on with this book after the 1st chapter... the story begins in a very brutal way and I thought my stomach wouldn't survive it... but then it quickly turned into a very beautiful one and I've finished this book thinking it will be a lonnnnnng wait before the sequel will be published. I loved all the characters (or at least loved to hate some of them 😄)... this book definitely made me want to read more about syrens (not mermaids 😉) and I assure you it's not my kind of books usually. This was a really great adventure and I can't wait to read what's happening to Brigid and Caelum... in April 2023 😊

This had some interesting ideas and I'm always up for a murderous mermaid, I was initially intrigued and on paper, this did seem a good fit. Unfortunately, this didn't quite hit the mark. Now there's nothing massively wrong with this and the writing was for the most part fine but this was also described as dark and it was so far from that description it's ridiculous. Take away the actions of the Syrens involved and this had a distinctly juvenile feel and quite a simplistic style of narration despite the subject matter it had a very YA vibe to it all. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters and had zero investment in the approaching outcome and frankly, I was bored. There are some major occurrences here that should have affected me in some way but not even a blip.

So there were a few things that bothered me the way Bridget would call Sorcha little one like she herself was ancient. The almost instant transition from enemies to comrades. The instaness of everything and also just the fact how nice and good Caelum is I like my book boyfriends to be much more murderous and stabby Caelum was just so bland and boring. There was also a lack of world-building building it was there but it was the bare bones and the characters all felt one-dimensional and rather weak. This also had a tell style of Storytelling which I am also not a fan of.

Unfortunately, I won't be continuing this series as I have no inclination to pick up the conclusion (this is a duo) this would be a better fit for someone who likes mermaids with action that comes with a sweetheart of a hero myself I've always preferred the villain of the piece I mean come on Caelum is even all understanding of the fact that she was a part of the murdering of his crew there's literally zero blowback on Bridget. Also, can I just say Bridget's transition from murderous to feeling guilty felt inauthentic and without any logical reason it's almost instant, I also saw the twist coming a mile off as this was fairly predictable. This does have potential but as it stands it definitely needs fleshing out and expanding on.

“I couldn’t seem to help myself, her innocence in terms of experience with males that didn’t involve violence was both alluring and a challenge.”

Fresh take on syrens? Check.

Pirates? Check.

Incredible tension? Check.

A man who puts the woman first? Check.

The Syren’s Mutiny created a fresh take on syrens and pirates and rivalries that drive the story forward. And it was beautiful to read. Jess truly transformed her ideas into this novel and made it unique and her own.

Our main FMC, Brigid, has not only incredible character development but is fascinating to learn about and read from her POV of why she does what she does. Along with the FMC POV, there’s the MMC POV, Caelum, who is not your typical pirate. Between putting the woman first, being concerned about others than himself, and helping elevate the story with his POV, I truly loved switching between each characters mindset.

Brigid is a syren, Caelum is a pirate captain, and together they create a duo that is worth reading and diving into. With twists, turns, and an ending that had me wanting more, this read was divine. The story kept me wanting to turn the page to find out what happens next and the ending…oh the ending has me in a chokehold.

If you’re looking for a fresh take on syrens (mermaids- similar) and pirates and an adventure with Scottish heritage, this book is for you. Well-paced, new author who definitely knows how to write a story, and perfectly timed tension are some key components to this compelling novel.

This is an adult novel with adult themes, so please understand that before beginning.

I could not get past how repetitive this story was, nor how the MMC was like, "I hate you for killing my family" and in the very next breath, "I need to save you I love you my damsel in distress."

This BOOK ❤️ I absolutely love retellings and The Syrens Mutiny gave me Little Mermaid vibes... but WAY darker!! 🖤🖤

Brigid was saved by a Syren 10 years ago from the hands of men. She then made her biggest life choice: she decided to become one of them and help them in their cause. Now, the syrens have no mercy and no pity when it comes to enacting their revenge on men, they hunt the seas for their ships and drown them. That is, until Brigid comes face to face with the only man in her life that showed her kindness.

So many of the tropes included I absolutely love: One bed, One cabin, body Warmth trope (when two characters have no choice but to cuddle to stay warm), I came to kill you but fell in love... Caelum is protective, charming and extremely hot! My perfect type of book boyfriend.

Their dynamic reminded me of Nina & Matthias from six of Crows... 😭❤️

I normally NEVER ever DNF a book, but I’m at 21% into this book and I’m dying of boredom. There’s hardly any dialogue; what dialogue there is sounds incredibly juvenile, not that there’s anything wrong with YA, but I wasn’t prepared to read what feels like YA. I like my books with a lot more action, less worldbuilding, and lots of spice.

Loved this one!

I absolutely devoured this book, y’all. It was exciting, twisty, fast paced, and had a swoon-worthy romance! The FMC Brigid is FIERCE and confident, and her MMC counterpart Caelum is just as fierce and confident as she is. And I love that…I feel like typically in books one person in the relationship is strong while the other slowly grows into their strength, but this book said “absolutely nope” to that trope!

It ends on a shocking cliffhanger, so I am desperate for book two! But the title for book two has me sooo pumped 👀 can’t wait for it!

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Right, so I was definitely going into this expecting to completely love this book based on the synopsis. Sadly, my first read of 2023 left me somewhat underwhelmed.

I'll be honest I had a problem getting through the book without skimming through the unnecessary chapters, that just kept repeating what had already been told.
And I mean TOLD. The whole story happens within what's approximately two weeks, and everything important to the plot was literally given to the reader on a silver platter in the form of either extremely cringe dialogue or boring inner monologue of the two main character's POVs. (Not that you could actually distinguish between those two, given there was literally no difference in the writing between the male/female characters.)

The writing in general was extremely simple and just felt like it was aimed at children/teens instead of its marketed YA, but I guess some people might enjoy that for when they just want a super quick and easy read.

As I mentioned above, the plot was super repetitive and predictable (the author would even go so far as to introduce things a couple of pages before they become relevant to the plot), and just generally going way too fast for my liking. This included the "slow-burn" romance and friendships, which really just happened instantly after the characters met. The lore of the world seemed really interesting, but the lazy story-writing lets it down. There are honestly problems with almost everything, starting with the shallowness of the characters who are supposed to be edgy and dangerous? syrens and pirates, to the instant world travel through the seas, the weird dialogue choices and just really out of nowhere plot twists and deaths that were there just to try and get the reader to actually care about anything at all.

Based on this, I don't think I'll be going back to the second book once it comes out, since I really couldn't care less about anything that happened in the first one. I guess I'll just have to continue my search for a good siren book.

Such a fun dark romance fantasy about syrens! I've tried to find a book like this for the longest time so got really excited when I came across this one. Even though the first half moves a little slow, it is overall a very quick read and the second half really ramps up! Loved the plot twists, the forbidden romance between syren and pirate/ smuggler and the adventure of the story. It starts off like a little mermaid retelling and then goes in its own direction. Also, it ends on a cliffhanger so have book 2 handy!

Okay I’m back to write a full review. I had the privilege of being an Alpha Reader for Jessica S. Taylor. Jessica is an amazing writer. I love the way she manipulates words into these beautiful creations.

I have little to no experience with this style of book. I’m all honesty, I’ve never read anything like this.
One of my favorite things in books is when the author will twist in cultural elements into these characters to make them unique. One example of this is C. Rochelle. Her characters in the ROTW series are multicultural and have things that make them unique.

There’s a point to this. I swear! Jess does this language thing so well. The characters speak in a different way from how we speak. Things like Lass, lad and elements of their native languages are thrown into the book in such creative and eloquent ways that it add to the depth of the story and the characters. I fell in love with them. Brigid is a hardass in the best way possible. People are kinda afraid of her because she doesn’t let people get away with shit. Cal is a lover. He’s soft at heart and someone who I can see myself falling wholly in love with as a character.

The story was captivating and exciting and something I didn’t expect. They say there are no unique stories now but this one felt so new and fresh to me. The cliffy hurt but I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Do yourself a favor a preorder this book!

instalove and some extremely cringey scenes at around 20-35%.

the second half was better. it was more interesting and exciting. the romance was a complete miss for me. the story would've been better without it.

despite those issues i had at the start, it did get better and i was excited as to what was going to happen. i look forward to reading the next book in the series.

a few issues i had (that didn't hinder my reading experience, but felt like it needed an extra proof reading session):

the formatting was rather annoying. half of the scene dividers (***) were centred and the other half were on the left side of the page. there were a couple of double periods at the end of a sentence (..). i went the extra mile in purchasing the ebook to compare it to my fabled crate special edition, and was disappointed to find my physical copy had no chapter heading pictures.

I got an absolutely gorgeous print of this book in my Fabled Twilight's box for November. Having not heard about this book before I had no idea what to expect but now I'm sitting here oh so keen for the sequel (it ended on a cliffy).

This is only my second book about sirens and it was easy to like. I enjoyed the plot, and character building and histories, but mostly the commentary it made about gender inequality. I think the execution could have been better although considering that I belive this to be the author's debut novel, its far better than most.

I am absolutely in love with all books pirate related!!

I knew I had to check this book out. I can’t believe I waited so long to read it! It was so good!!

Caelum and Brigid have an amazing story. I loved the push and pull between them. The angst and tension between these two keep you wanting to know what’s going to happen. I loved Brigid’s feistiness, and how Caelum helped to calm Brigid.

The story is extremely well written, the twist and turns will keep you pulled in. The dual POV helped you to grow with each character and to know what they were truly feeling.

OMG, the ending threw me for a loop. I am so glad that I was able to grab an ARC copy from Jessica S Taylor's emailed newsletter so I can continue on with The Captain’s Revenge!!!

“But something about her drew me in like a moth to a flame, and I was curious to see what getting burned would feel like.”

Killer sirens… snarky banter… forced proximity with only one bed? This is what dreams are made of and thankfully for us Jessica Taylor is making our dreams come true with Syren’s Mutiny.

Every interaction between Brigid & Caelum has me laughing, swooning, screaming or melting. I absolutely adored these characters and watching their relationship grow. There is definitely instant attraction but the slow-burn romance was so good (even if ALL THE INTERRUPTIONS had me screaming in frustration). The way Brigid’s anxiety and self-doubt were approached in this story was *chef’s kiss* and I love that we see a new portrayal of how anxiety can show itself, but also how Brigid manages her anxiety to work through the stressful moments.

The side characters were equally likeable and I hope we get to see more of them in future books! And the villains were truly despicable - just the way I like them!

Be prepared to have all the feels and for the pain this story is about to inflict on your poor heart with this story - the cliffhanger is brutal and I don’t know how I’ll survive until book 2!

Of note, there are darker themes discussed, so please check TW - however none of the themes are discussed insignificant detail.

THE SYREN’S MUTINY is the book every reader who loves syrens more than mermaids was waiting for! If you love a good seafaring adventure along the lines of To Kill a Kingdom and Fable, with bloodthirsty syrens, dashing rogues and a mildly steamy romance to keep the blood flowing, I highly recommend trying this one.

This book has everything an adventure at sea needs: dangers at sea, dangers on land, and a cast of deeply addicting and flawed characters to keep the story interesting. While this installment only scratches the surface of the world-building potential, I’m already obsessed with the darkness of the syren lore and how it connects with the superstitions tied to women at sea. These syrens are true predators, and I loved seeing this aspect of their way of life as much as I did seeing the camaraderie and sisterhood that links them in their everyday life.

The characters were certainly the highlight of the novel. Brigid and Caelum were incredible protagonists! They’re both strong and determined in their own right, but they also don’t hide their vulnerabilities, which made them that much more likeable and relatable. I especially loved the way the author handled the descriptions of Brigid’s past trauma and the anxiety that she carries with her from that moment on. It’s no surprise that this incredible characterization also brought to a fantastic romance. I will never stop advocating for the superiority of stories where acquaintances/friends grow estranged only to meet again when they’re older. The chemistry between Caelum and Brigid jumped off the page from their very first scene together, and the author did an incredible job at pacing this relationship, balancing the attraction with moments of misunderstanding and tension. The few steamy moments between them promise such great things from the sequel! Sequel that I will need in my hands effective immediately thanks to that fantastic cliffhanger, which was the perfect gasp-out-loud ending to a book that was hard to put down.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.

That feeling when you find another beautiful seafaring gem!

While I admittedly don’t read books set at sea as often as I’d like, The Syren’s Mutiny is the type of book that perfectly shows why I like this sort of story so much: the dangers, the adventure, the seafaring role and the potential for romance between rivaling species. (Mermaid/sirens vs. Humans is a classic indeed, and one I love!) This book gave me all of that, balancing a dark atmosphere with fun moments of camaraderie and banter that made the pages fly by. It was almost like reading a more mature, darker, and steamier version of The Little Mermaid, which is only one more reason why I loved this book. (Like I said, a classic.)

Though I enjoyed the first part of the book where we get to see the protagonist, Brigid, at sea with her syren sisters, the moment I really got invested in the story was when Brigid meets Caelum again and the focus moved to the adventure on land. Of all the characters, Caelum was without a doubt my favorite. He’s my type of character: strong when he needs to be, protective, but also kind and very loyal to his crew—and later on, to Brigid. I loved the relationship between Caelum and Brigid because—despite the attraction being evident from very early on—the author didn’t rush the pacing of it. I enjoyed the banter, but also the uncertainties they both had because of their obligations—one to her syren way of life and the other to his crew. It made it all the more satisfying to see them falling head over heels for one another, and I can’t wait to get more of that relationship in the next book! Which I need. Soon. Please! The book ends on a cliffhanger that had me screaming at the page.

Apart from the romance, I also really enjoyed the friendships in the book, especially the one between Brigid and Sorcha, one of the newest syrens who Brigid takes under her wing and grows very attached to. This particular relationship tugged at my heart.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

The premise of this book is really interesting and it's well executed, does it have potential to be better? of course.

So we have Brigid, our MC, normal female being who turned into syren after she was discovered stowed away and pushed off the ship. She's fierce but she's not cold, she's sharp but also impatient, when she cares about someone she cares deeply, it doesn't change even after a decade trying to deny it. Then we have Caelum, a boy that board the ship where Brigid was thrown off ten years ago, he tried but failed to help Brigid. That night left strong impression on each both Brigid and Caelum. No details given what exactly happened when he tried to help her, we only know that he got punished for it. Now, he's a captain of his own ship & mission now but unfortunately one night his ship got wrecked the legendary creatures, syrens.

Since they have strong impression on each other their reaction towards each other is kinda understandable especially with the mix of emotion after what just happened for Caelum, it's a high tension situation and not the sexual kind. I found their feeling development towards each other a little fast sometimes, not an insta love speed considering they know of each other before even just for a little time but again they both just gone through a traumatic experience so.. yeah, it's just my opinion.

The plot is actually interesting, this book ends on a cliffhanger and I do wonder about the backstory and how the story would play out in the next book. If you read a lot of fantasy book then I would like to say there's not many surprised or big plot twist here, but it's an enjoyable experience, I hope the next book would be even better then the first book with more intricacy and action scenes.

⚠️⚠️⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️⚠️⚠️

P.D: Ladies and gentlemen.

Me parece impresionante.

...

Can we talk about the fact that they didn't take a bath in the entire book? Unbelievable.

Another thing, the plot twist is next-level bad. It's mediocre. The first one was obvious from the start, and I saw the second one coming from a mile away.

I loved how sweet Caelum was, super understanding, communicative, and he treated Brigid so well. 🎀 I have no complaints about him.

I liked Brigid's personality, it suited her character perfectly. She was a killer, but not heartless.

The chemistry between them was palpable from the first minute. What I didn't like was that "slow burn" felt forced because something could have easily happened at 50%, but they left it for 97% ?) Unnecessary.

I didn't expect the Sorcha thing, ok.

This book is incredible!
I finished today and I’m desperate to know more! It was a new fresh idea on syrens, pirates and life on the ocean. It connects both on crusade filled with tension, fun, and twists. Honestly am all in for this one.
The story follows Brigid and Caelum. She is a syren, he is a pirate. One fated encounter years ago will unite them again in the most unusual of circumstances. She was thrown overboard years ago, he couldn’t save her. A syren queen offer her to become one of them and get revenge on all men. She took it. Now she and her sisters attack a ship. And for he first time she prefers to save than to kill. A decision that gets her banished. A choice that now leads her into helping stranger to stop a child trafficking operation.
The book is filled with incredible scenes. There are multiple twist that make the story incredibly addictive. The characters are great. As you get to know to know them from the perspectives of both Caelum and Brigid you get to see different sides on all of them. Both the main characters and the secondary ones are really lovable and real. The book is well written and has a lot to it. The story captivates from the first chapter into the last. How the characters find each other is simple incredible. A book that was almost imposible to put down.

“Bubbles escaped from his nose and mouth, and his body thrashed, still trying to escape. His obvious panic and suffering did nothing to me, and I only watched in utter indifference as he continued to try to break free of my grip. But I was a syren. And he was just a man.”

WOW. This was such an unexpected WINNER of a book for me. At times brutal, and very much adult in content, this book was fantastic. The writing draws you in from the very beginning and the characters are beautifully flawed and I just LOVED this!!

This is a fresh take on pirates and mythological syrens, and I am so honored to be part of the review team with @rrbooktours and @authorjessicastaylor

In Sryen’s Mutiny, you get:
Slow-burn (but instant attraction)
Just enough spice
Cinnamon Roll love interest
Hardcore badass FMC
Mental Health representation (anxiety)
Forced Proximity
Only One Bed
Great Side Characters

5 freaking stars!!

This book had its magic moments, especially in the beginning. The introduction to the Syren world and the whole world in general, as well as the characters and their back stories, was very engaging.

Highlights :

1. Unfair World : I loved the back stories that the author gave to the Syrens. I loved the light it shed on the superstition of the people and the unfairness of the male-dominated world.

2. Wrong people gaining from the victims' pains : The moments in this book revolve around its female characters, as well as how someone can take someone else's pain and, rather than helping them, try to gain power from it and use it for their own gain. By fueling the pain, they take the victims' worn-out emotions and feed them until they fester into hatred and anger, which they then use for their own purposes.

Things that did not work for me :
The pacing was good, and the plot was simple but predictable. Although there are some unexpected twists at the end and the book ends on a cliffhanger for the second book, I felt like book 1 didn't have much to say plot-wise, despite highlighting some very strong points, and the book dragged as a result.

Also, the romance didn't work for me that much. The attraction and the chemistry were there, but the execution left me a bit wanting. Since it is written in first person with dual POVs, I was looking for more emotional anguish, love, trauma to connect to. I'm hoping the upcoming sequels will perform significantly better as this is the first book in the series and a debut.

Although I completely see why it has such a great rating on Goodreads, I believe I am in the minority in admitting that this book did not appeal to me as a whole. Maybe it was the plot that was too predictable or the chemistry between the two main characters required something more.

* Syrens
*Pirates
*Enemies to lovers
This book has everything that I love in a story, and pirates are my passion, so of course I looked for an ARC. I really liked it, so for everyone that needs a good introduction to a good pirate’s book, this is a good choice.
The narrative starts with Brigid- a syren that, with the others, kills the men in their ships. Under the queen's orders, Cliodhona, the syrens makes everything to kill them. With traumas and hate for men, Cliodhona uses that like gasoline for your purposes. When a girl are rescued by the sirens (Sorcha) and she chooses to stay with them, Brigid starts to train her. But Sorcha makes questions about the motivations of Cliodhona and Brigids finds herself asking if their revenge is right or not. One day she helps wreck a ship, but in their ship are the only guy that shows her compassion- Caelum. In conflict, she saves Calum’s life, but are banished by the sirens. With this context, and with the story about Caelum, Brigid and Caelum made a deal to help each other. With a tense relationship, adventure and conflicts, this book it’s a good introduction to a good story. I really enjoyed it, even if at some times I felt that Brigid had some confusing attitudes, but everything slowly developed into a good story.

3.5 star rounded up because LOOK AT THE COVER!

My all time favorite book features murderous mermaids, and I love a good gritty pirate tale, so when I read the blurb for The Syren's Mutiny I all but shrieked. This fun new take on the mythological sirens was captivating. The main characters, syren Bridgid and pirate Caelum, were easily likeable from the start. I loved the chemistry between them, and the banter was a lot of fun!

I was disappointed in the portrayal of pirates. They did not speak nor act in any way like you'd expect, except for the occasional "aye." The pacing was a little rough as well; some points of the story dragged. At 480 pages, I think it was excessively verbose.

As a fan of To Kill A Kingdom, I was really excited to pick this up. And while this was an enjoyable read, I didn’t end up loving this book like I thought I would.

I was expecting an enemies-to-lovers romance with lots of angst and tension, but instead Brigid and Caelum’s relationship developed way too quickly. It was very much almost insta-love. The plot dragged towards the end as well.

While the book ended on a cliffhanger, I don’t find myself invested enough in the story or the characters to want to continue the series and see how it ends.
