Avery Davis has spent her life feeling unwanted and unlovable, desperately searching for affection and belonging. But her world is turned upside down when she’s ripped from her bed in the dead of night by Dire Jax Evans, a ruthless gang leader with no patience for weakness.
Forced to live under Jax’s roof, Avery finds herself in a dangerous world where connection is the last thing she expects. But she soon proves to be far more than Jax bargained for. As their lives become tangled, walls come down, and hearts are laid bare, Avery glimpses the vulnerable side of the man holding her captive—and an unexpected love begins to take root.
As desire and doubt collide, their emotions spiral into a web of right, wrong, want, and need. With their hearts—and their lives—on the line, one thing is the situation is dire.
Put on your rose-colored glasses and buckle up for this thrilling, morally gray love story.
Oh my god!!! I’ve found a new book boyfriend!! I came across this book on tiktok and I loved the sound of it. As soon as I stared to read it I know I was going to love it. I love the authors writing style and the story just flowed. The character development was spot on as I love how Avery and Jax gelled together. I can’t wait for book 2!!!
This was one of my 3rd Dark Romances :) I’m starting to get into them.
I found this author on TikTok. You can purchase her book through Amazon or message her for a signed copy .
I never knew what a cliff hanger was until I finished this book. I don’t know if I want to say I loved the relationship with Avery and Jax. Just because his group kidnapped her. But, I do like how Avery was able to find herself and find someone who truly loved and will protect her to no end. And, even Jax’s members would do anything for Avery.
The scene where he is teaching her to drive, I laughed so hard 😂😂
I was alittle uncomfortable with the scene with her Dad. But, other than that. I think this book was really good. And, such a page turner 👏
And, I look forward to reading the next one when it is published. 👏
***EDIT*** LOWERING MY RATING SINCE THE AUTHORS FRIENDS ARE ATTACKING ME FOR MY RATING. I'd like to add, not being transparent about a book having a cliffhanger is going to lose you readers. And it's not a good look sending your people because you didn't like the way someone rated your book.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The book ended on a cliffhanger with no warning from the author. That's usually an immediate "never read" list for me. Also, not safe.
This was already a very long book, about 500 pages that didn't need to be that long. The story could've been told in 200 pages probably. Most of the important things happened in the first few chapters and the last 20%. The middle was just fluff. The fmc gets kidnapped by the mmc and his friends, she has no idea why. We're not told why either from the mmc's perspective until towards the end. He treats her like a servant, she cooks for him and his friends, cleans and is terrified of him. She internally fumes and gets mad but nothing comes of it. He keeps telling her not to trust him or anyone else. She wore rose colored glasses throughout the whole book, and was a complete doormat.
After they start having a relationship, he also sleeps with other people in their shared home. (Twice that we know of). He makes sure she hears it. After she gets upset about it the first time, he locks her in the basement for two days without food or water. After a week or so, she just forgives him. She also makes out with one of his friends to make him jealous, but couldn't fully go through with it.
**SPOILERS for the rest of the book below** . . . . I thought these were plot holes and didn't make sense to me. It made it seem like she was there for months, then it says a month. I'm not sure of the amount of time she was with him. But in that time he never told her why she was there. It made no sense. She was kidnapped to exchange for someone else that was kidnapped (a child). But the person who orchestrated all of this(unknown to the mmc) was her father who's never been in her life. He raped her mom. He was also a trafficker. The mmc is a bad guy, but also supposedly saves people from bad situations. So why wouldn't he look into her? All this time she was there with him, he never had a conversation with her about it. Never even looked into the validity of it. And they're supposed to be some organized vigilante group. But why was she there for that long?? It was never explained. They exchange her to her father, and he tries some half ass way to save her. To me, it seemed like he had no intention of saving her. If he really loved her, he would've talked to her and told her the situation. They could've saved the little girl. But she's with her father, and she's sold to one of his men(who turns out to be one of the mmcs men undercover). But not without getting beat up and tortured a little first. The whole time, she's worried about the mmc and loves him and isn't mad him. It was pissing me off. Eventually after he saves her, even he doesn't understand why she's not mad at him and decides to send her back to her mom's. She begs and pleads and wants to stay with him, and he says no. I desperately wanted her to grow a backbone. And the book ended.
Great start by a new indie author, Lex. I found her on TikTok and immediately loaded Dire. Dire is about a gang trying to make it as a found family in a harsh world.
They aren't good men. They shouldn't be trusted. They are loyal only to Dire.
Our FMC, Avery, is kidnapped and held by Dire. She goes through it. You feel her go through it.
This is a dark gang romance with TONS of violence (delicious) and a great start to a new series from a new indie author.
Can't wait to see where she takes this interesting and newer storyline. Spice was great, enjoyed the plot, waiting patiently for the next book!
Definitely a keep you guessing type of book. I loved that. It just jumped into the book. There was no lead up. Chapter 3 were in the middle of it. I loved that. I definitely did not see the twist and turns coming throughout the story. Definitely worth a read! The relationship between the two main characters was something that I ate up, I felt chemistry between them. I loved the hyper protection that our male main character had. It is chef’s kiss.
MY JAX …..I think I’m still processing this book. This book took me four months to read not because it was a hard book because I didn’t want it to end. I was so terrified of losing these characters and losing this world that I was in. I absolutely loved these characters. I love Jax I love Avery. I love Noah. I love Dom, I love this book so much and this world lex you are amazing and I love this book so much you will always be my first biker romance
SUCH A GOOD READ!! aside from the few grammatical errors, I absolutely loved this book and the entire plot! This book kept you on your toes, some plot twists you didn’t see coming, the spice was good, definitely has some TW’s if that stuff bothers you!! The storyline to this book sucked me right in. It had so many chaotic moments and had so much unpredictability to it. I swear I killed this book in less than a week. Hands down, one of my most favorite indie authors. She really knows how to grab your attention. And trust me, if you're looking for spice 🌶, this book definitely has that for me! 👩🏻🍳💋
It kept me on my toes the entire time! I didn't see alot of that coming and Jax, my God sir.. you're stubborn and led by insecurity but that girl loves you!! Highly recommend, lots of action, smexy time. I would like a little more character definition, but I kinda made them up in my mind easily!!
This gripping story of Jax and Avery had me hooked from the moment I picked up the book. From the start of the story to the end, I was on the edge of my seat seeing where the book would take me. This debut novel by Lex has been living rent free in my head since I first read it!
I have been waiting for this book to come out! Yes it ended on a cliffhanger but so what? Not like there isn’t going to be another book! I give it a 10/10 read it in one sitting! Could not put it down! Can’t wait for book 2!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING BOOK! The 1st chapter alone got me hooked. I finished this book in 2 days. I was hooked the moment I started reading it. All the twists, turns, and some smut. I give this book a 10/10. Highly recommend!!
Absolutely amazing, sad there’s a clip hanger though 😂😭 I want to know what happens with Avery and Jax. Does he stop and realize her love is real, does she find her way back to Dire? I NEED TO KNOW
dark and twisty in the best ways, i didn’t expect the plot twists and to get her happily ever after was the cherry on top i hope to read more by the author. i also found this book on tiktok from the author!! loved it! great job!
I need part 2 IMMEDIATELY!! I truly devoured this book and fell in love with the character, immediate devastation when I reached the end because I truly wanted to continue the adventure with them all. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next book for sure
Absolutely in love with this book I couldn't put it down. Super excited for book 2 to come out. P.s. keep your head up love don't let the negative comments get you down
Hands down one of my favorite books i couldn't put it down and finished it in 2 days I can't wait to see what else this author creates 🥰 she's getting a special place in my book shelf
I am OBSESSED with Jax and Avery’s incredible ever changing relationship coupled with their own personal growth and struggles left me wanting more. Completely unpredictable, creating the need to know what happens next, which further fueled my need to read cover to epilogue without stopping. Definitely a favorite of mine. I can’t wait for the unwritten chapter ahead. Happy Reading.
The book over all is a 3 out of 5 stars, maybe a 3.5. I loved the premise of the book, I loved following along with the characters and watching Avery grow as her own person. Watching Jax go from Rottweiler to Retrieve for her was amazing. The only thing that really threw me off was that I feel it could have been edited a little bit better. There were things that were miss typed, duplicate words in sentences, and missed punctuation. However, it didn't stop me from reading this book. I truly did love Dire, the characters, and am beyond ready for book two!
This story pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn’t let go. It’s a powerful exploration of love, fear, and complicated relationships formed under the most dangerous circumstances. Lex does an amazing job bringing Avery and Jax’s world to life, keeping the tension high and the emotions even higher. Avery is beautifully written. Her fear, confusion, and undeniable pull toward Jax feel raw and incredibly real. Watching her wrestle with her emotions while trying to survive makes her easy to relate to and impossible not to root for. Her vulnerability paired with her strength makes her a truly compelling main character. Jax is just as intriguing. He’s harsh and intimidating, yet there are moments where his softer side slips through, adding so much depth to his character. His connection to the Dire gang clearly shapes who he is and the choices he makes, which makes his feelings for Avery even more complex and compelling. The chemistry between Avery and Jax is intense and emotional, and their intimate moments are handled with care, never losing sight of the danger surrounding them. The push and pull between desire and fear is perfectly balanced, keeping you hooked and anxious about what might happen next. Overall, this story blends romance, suspense, and psychological depth beautifully. It makes you question love, morality, and how far someone might go to feel connected even in the darkest situations. An emotionally rich and thrilling read that I highly recommend.
