Book two in the Gods of the Game series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Ana Huang.

As the captain of Blackcastle Football Club and one of the highest-paid athletes in the game, Vincent DuBois should be on top of the world.

But when his fame brings danger to his doorstep, he finds himself in a nightmare scenario―sharing a flat with his coach’s daughter, knowing full well she’s far too big a temptation for him to resist.

When his new living arrangements escalate into a bet that throws them even closer together, he realizes he’s in deeper trouble than he thought.

He’s always played to win―but for her, he might just risk it all.

***

As a sports nutritionist and the daughter of a legendary coach, Brooklyn Armstrong is used to dealing with hotshot athletes.

However, no player gets under her skin like Vincent, her best friend’s infuriatingly cocky (and gorgeous) brother. She left California hoping for a fresh start, and he’s the kind of distraction she doesn’t need.

Now, he’s sleeping in the room next to hers while her career is up in the air and her defenses are crumbling.

But no matter how many sparks fly between them, a relationship between the captain and the coach’s daughter could never work…could it?

The Defender is now LIVE!

After much teasing and waiting, Vincent and Brooklyn are finally home!! The Defender is live worldwide in all formats, and I’m SO excited for you to read it 🥹

Gods of the Game is lighter than some of my other series (though there’s still a bit of suspense in The Defender!), but writing this book was a much-needed escape for me earlier this year, and I hope you’ll find as much joy reading it as I did writing it.

I absolutely love Vincent and Brooklyn’s relationship, but one of my favorite parts is the reappearance of a certain book club. IYKYK. Let’s just say, Isabella Valencia would be proud 🦖

A Star Player- a Rulebreaker, and One Wild Hell of a Ride!

➷RUNDOWN:

🏈 The Captain. Champion. Certified Chaos in Cleats.—
Meet Vincent DuBois -Captain of Blackcastle FC 🇫🇷 World Cup champion for France...
Star defender with a Lamborghini, an attitude problem, and abs that probably have their own fanbase. He’s the star of the team—fast, hot, annoyingly smug—and so used to being worshipped, he practically walks on turf like it’s a runway. He’s used to breaking records.

👟 The Coach’s Daughter:
Brooklyn Armstrong
📝 Coach’s daughter. PR intern.💅 Best friend to his sister. Worst nightmare to him.
🙄 Has survived enough locker room egos to earn a medal.
🚫 Immune to footballers… until him. Not your average side character. She’s smart. She’s sharp. She grew up in stadiums and can call a blitz before the quarterback blinks.
Also? She’s completely over guys like him.
Her dad said “stay away from my players.”
And she was doing fine, thank you very much...
Until Vincent smirked.
And winked.
And called her sweetheart in French.
💅

⚔️ The Setup:
He’s football royalty. She’s forbidden territory. And neither of them plays nice.
Enemies-to-lovers but make it personal fouls only. She’s off-limits, and he’s the human equivalent of a penalty flag.

📝 VIBE CHECK: 'What You’re Really Getting Into'-
- One car ride and a missing book turned into a full-blown slow burn UEFA drama
- “Don’t push it, Blondie.” // “You’re cute, but not that cute.” = 100% flirting war zone
- Bonus: He’s too smart, too strategic, too smug. Aka dangerously hot.
- Paparazzi? Fans? Pressure? The man is dodging feelings like defenders.
-He’s got the ego of Ronaldo, the body of Mbappé, and the mouth of a disaster waiting to happen.
-Banter like: “Get over yourself.” / “I’d need a ladder.”
-Tension like: hands brushing in the locker room, but also she might strangle him with a towel.
-Forbidden like: dad will bench you for life if he finds out.
-Football, fame, and frustration as Vincent tries to score more than just goals.

~Coach: “Vincent, I need you focused this season.”
Vincent: “I am fo—” (coach’s daughter walks in)
Vincent, blinking: “—cussed. I am so focused. Like laser. Totally sir” 😮‍💨💥

“I just want to talk to her because I lent her the latest Isabella Valencia book and I want it back.”-Did we just see Vincent DuBois—world-class football player, ladies’ man, star defender—become a bookish softie? I’ll take it.
*Pressure’s High, Stakes are Higher, and the Banter’s Premier League-Level.

🔗Brooklyn x Vincent banter (from-The Striker)
Scarlet: Brooklyn and Vincent were still bantering/flirting/whatever they were doing.
Brooklyn tossed a sideways glance at him, her lips curving into a teasing smile.
“Charitable mood, huh?” She raised an eyebrow. “Is that what you call trying to impress me?”
Vincent leaned in, a wicked grin playing on his lips.
“Not trying to impress you, Blondie. Just making sure you don’t miss out on all the fun.”
Brooklyn tilted her head, her lips curling into a sarcastic smile.
“Oh, I’m keeping up just fine. But it’s hard to enjoy when you’re so... unbearably full of yourself.”
Vincent just chuckled, leaning in a little closer, clearly loving the back-and-forth.
“Good. Because I wouldn’t want you to be bored with me.”

Okay, first of all—Vincent clearly knows how to throw the most perfectly timed jabs. And second of all, Brooklyn’s sarcasm? Gold. These two are a dynamic duo, whether they admit it or not. It's giving reverse grumpyXsunshine.
-Verdict: Their chemistry? Sizzling. The insults? Hilarious. The tension? So thick you could cut it with a knife. It’s no wonder I’m already dying to see them finally get together.

~Dear Ana,
If this becomes another emotionally constipated quarterback sob-fest with ten minutes of actual football, we’re sending a strongly worded letter and a red card. Do not fumble this. My patience (and love for football) is running on fourth down.

~Final Score Prediction:
Either touchdown or total fumble.
And Ana, we’re watching. From the bleachers. With popcorn and high expectations!!!

🏆⁀➴★★

“Tu es plus que mon coeur, Tu es mon tout.”

⚽⁀➴First of all, I have to admit that I loved the first book in this series with every fiber of my being. So, before diving into this one, my expectations were high in the sky—utterly—because I absolutely loved Vincent in the first book. I loved him as the protective, jealous brother, and those little glimpses we got of him with Brooklyn, his sister's best friend? I was so excited for their story.
But honestly... I only really enjoyed the beginning, which was so promising, and the end, which was satisfying.
Oh, merde, merde, merde. Where was l'amour enflammé in this love story?
chui bruisée.

“The world loved the player, but I liked the flawed human underneath even more.”

⚽⁀➴Vincent Dubois. The Blackcastle Defender. The famous player—that charming, well-spoken man. But where was the fiercely jealous and protective man I fell for in the first book? Those weren't just traits; they were the core of his character!
Okay, fine, I'll admit it. In this book, he had his moments of being smug . But honestly? It wasn't annoying. It was actually kind of charming, the kind of teasing that doesn't give you the ick.
So what did give me the ick?
It was the moments that broke my heart: the moments when I felt he was finally about to be vulnerable with Brooklyn... and then he held back. Every. Single. Time.
This slow-burn wasn't just slow... it was torture. It felt less like a building fire and more like someone lighting a match and then blowing it out, over and over again.

“I’d spent my whole life feeling like a background character in the movie of my own life.”

⚽⁀➴ Brooklyn Armstrong. Oh, this girl. The manager's daughter and the team's nutritionist—I was with her for every single decision she made for her career. And let's be real about Vincent: her lack of control around him? Don't call it weakness. It was a drowning. A total, helpless pull she couldn't—and didn't want to—fight. I liked how her relationship with Vincent completely shook up her complex dynamic with her father.
But I have to ask, where was the editor for lines like this?. "My heart freaking melted. Some women loved seeing guys hold babies, but seeing Vincent cuddle a miniature pig made my ovaries explode. He was so dominant on the pitch, but his soft side off the pitch was even more attractive.".
Sorry, but that was pure cringe. The "ovaries explode" trope needs to retire. Honestly, if it was a cat instead of a pig, the whole scene would have been more charming and less... weird.

“I was tired of pretending when all I wanted was her.”

⚽⁀➴Well, Vincent, I was tired too! We all love a slow-burn sport romance, but this one was a Big No.
Let's be real: sometimes it was just boring. They had so much potential, so much tension... and they didn't even kiss until I was halfway through the book! Ana Huang, you tortured me.
And then, after the big boom finally happens, we get this? He's been calling her "buttercup" all this time—which is honestly way more intimate and touchy—but suddenly she thinks calling her his "girlfriend" is too early?!oh Brooklyn I think that u r more smart then that.
What the fuck? Buttercup is a thousand times more personal than girlfriend! The logic just wasn't there for me.!
".........I’d finally asked him last month why he called me by that nickname. He said it was because buttercups were beautiful but poisonous, just like me and my insults. Plus, they matched the color of my hair. His reasoning was ridiculous, but it was so him, I couldn’t be mad at it......".

“Je serais toujours là pour toi, mon coeur. Quoiqu'il arrive.”

⚽⁀➴Overall, the writing style itself contributed to me feeling... nothing, adding to the slow-burn frustration. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the British English; in fact, I think it's a privilege here. I loved the slang between the Blackcastle teammates and the authentic football terms—it built a solid, believable world.
But when it came to the romance? The emotional beats didn't land plus I hated the lack of communication between main characters a lot of times I was just frustrated And then... there were the moments Vincent spoke French. Ughhh. “Et ça a un putain de goût, ma chérie." Understanding those words he spoke felt like the real privilege. That was where the passion, the raw feeling, was hiding. It's a shame those moments were so few and far between.

“If I had to bet on you or a few thousand miles, I’d always choose you,”

⚽⁀➴ I really hated the stupid bet they made about who would seduce whom first. It made the beginning of their relationship feel cheap and game-like, undermining the genuine connection I was hoping for.
The intruder drama was a fine setup for forced proximity—no issues there. The real problem was the execution. The annoying character Mason was shoved into the spotlight to create a weak subplot that never felt authentic. The mystery of the intruder's identity was the main thing that kept me reading until the end, but then the writer gives us the ta-da 🎉 moment of revelation and it was just... ughhh. Seriously, some chapters here are just messy. The whole book started to feel like a messy checklist of plot points rather than a cohesive story.
And don't even get me started on the subplot with Brooklyn's mother. It felt completely unnecessary and made the narrative even more cluttered. I kept hoping the writer would focus more on the core romance, giving us deeper, more meaningful moments between Vincent and Brooklyn instead of piling on these convoluted, distracting plots.

┆🏆┆➴ ...P.S. As I read the whole book, I feel I deserve to read the story of Adil Chakir. He was so funny and actually became my favorite character here—I loved him more than the main characters! Please tell me he's getting his book, omg he is the MVP🙏.

⌇📜⌇➴ ...And oh, girls, 📢 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT! If you ever need an idea for a gift for the boy who sends you an invitation to his birthday, Brooklyn gives you the best idea in this book. (If you know, you know... and if you don't, get ready to cry-laugh 😭).

ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈⚽🧷💌

❝It wasn’t even about the lack of romance in my life; it was about being someone’s priority. Having an anchor. Knowing there was a person out there who would be my first call if shit went down and vice versa.❞
❝Goading her always felt like winning some secret game we played, and I’d just scored a major point.❞
❝He was like the moon to my tide; his mere presence altered my gravitational field.❞
❝Careless cruelty always cut deeper than intentional malice.❞
❝but emotions didn’t have boundaries. When one went haywire, so did the rest.❞
❝At the end of the day, it was a choice. I chose you.❞
❝The world could end, and I’d still be right here with her, where I was meant to be.❞
❝If I died, he would be my biggest regret; if I lived, he would be my biggest reward.❞
❝For the first time in my life, I understood what it meant to be truly home.❞
❝She was here, she was safe, and she was mine. For the first time in my life, love didn’t feel like a risk. It felt like the safest bet I’d ever made.❞

DNF 😢🫩

I honestly have nothing to say about this book, so I’m gonna keep it short.

I really tried to focus and enjoy it, but… nope. 😢 It was just too difficult for me to get through. 🫠 And even though there wasn’t a third-act breakup, it still felt boring to me 🥱. I should’ve stuck to my original decision, but mistakes happen 😭

I’m truly happy for everyone who liked, enjoyed, or even loved this book… but unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me. 🤧 I really did try.

That’s it, guys. Love y’all 🫶🩵

ᯓ⚽️ pre-read ᯓ⚽️

I honestly wasn’t planning to continue this series cuz the first book was pretty meh 🫤 But then I saw my friends’ reviews and got intrigued, and I’ve also heard there’s no third-act breakup (hello, Kimberly bestie 🫶) 👀 so obviously I have to give it a try now 🤭🩵 Plz deliver, I’m begging 😭

⌗  this review contains no spoilers!

⤹ after pulling myself through ‘the striker’, ‘the defender’ was a huge (and surprising) upgrade. ana huang is such a hit or miss author for me - ‘twisted hate’ is one of my favorite books of all time, twisted lies was amazing, but her kings of sins series and ‘the striker’ were all huge letdowns - and this book just proved my point. this was so delicious and tension-filled it drove me INSANE. vincent and brooklyn had the perfect relationship mix of physical and emotional chemistry, i was clawing at my walls for more of them. the 448 pages in this book FLEW by. i couldn’t believe when it ended - and again, that’s so surprising after i DRAGGED myself through the striker. vincent and brooklyn definitely became some of my favorite ana huang characters after this book 😮‍💨

⠀⠀ ☆ (    the characters   ) ...

﹒ꗃ vincent ; unpopular opinion but golden retriever mmc’s are superior to the grumpy mmc’s. i’m an empath so i take whatever the characters say to heart as if i am the main character, so “grumpy (see: rude)” are usually not my favorite (vuk & Christian though hehe.) and vincent ATE in this book. he was the goofiest and kindest person ever and such a forgiver - one of the main reasons there wasn’t a third act breakup in this book was because of him. he’s mature, understanding, and the greenest flag ever 😩

﹒ꗃ brooklyn ; she was definitely not one of my favorite parts of this book.. i loved her passion for her career, but other than that, she was another stereotypical romance fmc. i will say that she was incredibly mature though, and i think that played out well for her and vincent’s relationship.

﹑ꕤ﹒୧ the romance . OH. OUH. holy shit. never in my entire life have i ever thought that this would be so. SO GOOD. their tension right from the beginning was steaming and made me invested in this book instantly. usually i don’t read spice scenes in books because i’ve been scarred from too many cringy ones, but theirs?? holy 🙂‍↔️ steaming, piping, sizzling, crackling 💋💘💗💓💖💨‼️ but aside from the spice, their emotional bond to each other was adorable. i loved how they leaned into each other interests and walked with each other every step of the way. Vincent and Brooklyn had such a tender, soft, and precious relationship that i couldn’t help but yearning for more.

⤹ ( side characters ) — 🖇️

ꕤ ⊹ noah & carina ; i’m so excited for their book — ana’s first single dad romance?!? i am sat. the tension already between them? i’m drooling.

ꕤ ⊹ scarlett & asher ; still boring af

୭౿ !🗝️ overall, this was such a fun and quick read. their relationship definitely carried this book (i still don’t know why ana added the mystery subplot — either expand on it more or not add it in at all), and it carried it on their BACK. when ana remembers that she can write bangers, it’s always a good day.
⊹ ﹒ ⁺ ﹒ ⊹ ﹒ ⁺ ﹒ ⊹ ﹒ ⁺ ﹒ ⊹ ﹒ ⁺ ﹒ ⊹ ﹒ ⁺ ﹒ ⊹ ﹒ ⁺ ﹒ ⊹

wow. for starters, this was a major step up from the first book, the striker. this is the second book in her newer interconnected series — the gods of the game — and it follows our main characters; vincent & brooklyn. this is a solid sports romance book, with a minor mystery plot woven into it. i am really looking forward to her next book in this series, since i am pretty sure it's going to follow two of the most talked about characters — noah & karina. this review will have *minor spoilers*.

for starters, this book is still a little too long. that was a major issue for me in book one, and while the pacing was a lot better, there is a lot of fluff that ultimately could've been condensed in this book as well. one of the aspects i really enjoyed in this book was the lack of objectification of either main character. a lot of their dynamic really hinges on shared interests and a gradually built friendship. if i am going to be honest, i remember next to nothing from the first book, so when everyone was talking about how this trope was going to be the coach's daughter — i was so confused. at no point in this story did i feel like these characters were together because of lust or to fulfill a romance trope. with that being said, i wouldn't call this book a slow burn since they do act on their attraction around the 50% mark, but it was a pleasant surprise.

as for the plot, there really isn't one. this is strictly a contemporary romance book with elements of soccer added in. the characters are interesting enough to keep my attention the entire time, but it was nothing super crazy or unique. that is pretty much where my personal issues lie. i felt like the stakes were nonexistent and didn't understand the need to keep this relationship under wraps. there is an entire plot point of this mysterious stalker that is following vincent around, so he ends up rooming with brooklyn. while the stalker plot was very unvaried, it at least brought something to the characters. the only other real thorn in this relationship was brooklyn's father who seemed to not be on board with their relationship until he caves in.

i say all this to say, the pacing was still in utter disarray and could've been abridged. i say this with all the positivity that i can, but these characters are just so healthy and mature. LMFAO i feel like a bitch because this isn't a fair argument, so i know this is a personal prerogative of mine, but the low stakes, coupled with the happy times just caused the pacing of this to crawl. i would've preferred if the stalker storyline was more prevalent and actually caused the couple to go through challenges and face obstacles — but everything was moving so seamlessly, so i was confused as to why there was still 100 pages left. again, this is not a bad thing — and in fact — i love how they behaved their age and both of our characters knew what they wanted. i do think for a romance story, though, this either needed to be shorter or have higher risks so we could reap the benefits.

i do give props to ana for going out of her comfort zone and writing about very different characters than her usual bias. as always, the writing is very facile and easy to follow along with, but there are some moments that either felt out of place or nonessential. this book falls under her decent/one and done for me because it's an entertaining book — but nothing i will think about for years to come. i am very chuffed for the next book because surprise — it's single grumpy dad. i am really hoping that ana gets a better editor to fix her pacing issues in some of her books. one example i can think of is, king of greed. call me toxic but i actually was vibing with this until i realized it abruptly ended at 310 pages. that is one of her books that should've been over 400 pages due to the past & present relationship and this series should've been cut at around 350 pages even. if she fixes this pacing issue, i truly think more people would enjoy her books.

overall, this was cute, fun, and to the point. the audio was also really good.

Well, this just brought back a flood of memories from every sport romance I have ever read — from Liz Tomforde's The Right Move to The Game On series... But I guess that is inevitable when you are working with such a familiar, recycled plot. That is to say, this book is nothing special.

However, the book's winning point is ultimately its football setting. As a true fan of the sport, the familiarity of the matches and the game day energy managed to inject some genuine hype, even when the plot itself felt a bit humdrum. Have to say that I relinquish all claim when Vincent’s defensive traits as a football player call Saliba to mind: the buzzcut, tall, dark, and handsome. I am having a field trip for sure.

While this book differs from Ana Huang's usual style with its darker, stalker-themed premise, the execution could not cut it. Despite the novel's length, the stalking plotline was treated with surprising lightness. I was not expecting a procedural mystery, but I was hoping for a more unsettling and adequately explored threat. The result was a conflict that felt conveniently low stakes, robbing the story of the thrilling unease it could have had.

Alack, the book sets up a classic forbidden romance, but it also never really makes you feel the part. You know that addictive hook you get when characters are crossing a line? That pulse of "we shouldn't be doing this"? It is missing here. The story never moves past the complication of liking the coach’s daughter. I did like that the characters acted with maturity, but their journey felt too convenient that it cries out the thrilling friction that the trope promises. Personally, I do not really like drama, but sometimes, you need a little drama.

Interestingly, the fact that this is a sports romance, a departure from Ana Huang's usual forte might be its secret strength. It does not feel overly burdened by the need to integrate characters from her other 'worlds.' As someone who finds her other series to be somewhat repetitive in their crossovers, this standalone focus was a welcome change. It allowed me to get fully invested in this story without distraction. I like Vincent, I like Brooke, I like everyone in the series so far.

I do not have much else to say, which usually happens when a book fails to ignite strong emotions in me. Still, I am looking forward to the next series (I am curious as to where Noah and Carina’s story go. I am rooting for you!!! The Keeper). So, if you feel bored and feel like reading into random's people story, yeah, this one is a tolerable read to pass the time.

“Je serais toujours la pour toi, mon coeur. Quoiqu’il arrive.”
I’m still trying to collect the pieces of my heart after finishing this one, because WOW, Ana Huang did not come to play. She came to destroy me (lovingly) and then rebuild me with swoon, angst, and a hero worth every single page of heartbreak and healing.
Let’s talk about the feels, this book had me on an emotional roller coaster. One minute I was melting, the next I was clutching my chest like someone stabbed me with a soul-crushing plot twist. And I LOVED EVERY SECOND. The characters were so beautifully flawed, so achingly real, and their connection? Electric. It’s the kind of slow burn romance that hurts in all the right places before it finally, gloriously ignites.

ehmm let’s begin.

ˋ°•*⁀➷ The Characters:
“I’d lose every single fucking bet in the world if it meant I could be with you.”
Vincent is the kind of man who stands in the shadows, silently watching over the people he cares about, not because he has to, but because he can’t imagine doing anything else. He’s loyal down to his soul, protective in a way that makes your heart clench, and carries a depth of pain that he doesn’t burden others with.
He’s the storm and the shelter, the danger everyone warns you about, but the peace you feel safer with than anyone else. Every time he lets his guard down? I WAS DONE FOR. That quiet vulnerability under all that armor? Perfection.

“You think you’re unlovable, but I think I’ve never known how to love until knowing you.”
And then we have Brooklyn….oh this sweet, kind woman. She’s guarded, bruised by the world, but still standing… still fighting. Even under the weight of her grief, her trauma, her trust issues, there’s a fire in her. A will to survive, even when it hurts.
She’s not perfect, she makes mistakes, but she’s so real. When she finally starts to let him in, to let herself believe in softness again, it’s the most beautiful thing ever. She’s the perfect example of a heroine who’s allowed to be strong AND scared at the same time. And I rooted for her every single step of the way. 🥺

“I’d choose you. Every time. Because you’re it for me, Brooklyn Armstrong. There’s nothing and no one else I love more.”
One thing that completely won me over was how their relationship actually had time to breathe and develop. It wasn’t insta-love or fake tension just for drama, it was a beautiful, genuine slow build that felt so earned. You could feel their connection growing scene by scene, with every shared moment and vulnerable conversation adding another layer. It wasn’t just two hot people flirting, it was two hurt, complex souls finding safety and understanding in each other. 😭

And omg, the way Ana handled their backstories? Chef’s kiss. Like yes, they had baggage, and not the “I stubbed my toe as a child and now I hate everyone” kinda baggage. REAL, messy, painful pasts that shaped who they are. Watching them work through it together? Healing. So healing.

“What happens next is simple. We’re together. Exclusively. No more games, no more uncertainty. In case you had any doubt, you’re mine, and I’m yours. I don’t care who knows. In fact, I want the whole fucking world to know because I’m done hiding.”
Also, I LOVED the little side plot, it was just enough to raise the stakes and give the story more depth, without overshadowing the romance or making the pacing drag. Honestly, Ana’s craft is on another level in this one. The pacing was perfect, the steam was scorching 🔥, and the emotional bond between Brooklyn and Vincent? So tangible and raw that I FELT it in my heart, my soul, my bones. 😫
A sports romance that gave me tension, character growth, and FEELS??? This was everything I wanted AND MORE. 🏒💘

“No matter where we were or how many people were around, Brooklyn could make the rest of the world fall away with one glance. I couldn’t explain how or why. She just…did.”
AND RIGHT??? Like, who gave Ana Huang the audacity to write characters that actually talk through their issues like grown, emotionally intelligent humans? 😭
I was fully prepared for the classic “misunderstanding + emotional devastation” combo that usually hits around 75% in her books, had my tissues ready, heart braced, full-on chaos mode activated… AND THEN??? THEY JUST… COMMUNICATED?? LIKE ADULTS???
No storming off.
No dramatic door slamming.
No “we’re done” monologue under the rain.
JUST CLEAR, HONEST, SENSIBLE COMMUNICATION???

They said:
“I feel this.”
“You’re right, let’s talk about it.”
“I’m hurt, but I want to make this work.”

And I was just sitting there like ??? Who are you people and why are you behaving like healthy adults??? Booktok was not prepared for this level of relationship stability. 😭
ANA HUANG REALLY SAID:
❌ Angst
❌ Toxic miscommunication
✅ Emotional intelligence
✅ Mutual respect
✅ ACTUAL MATURITY

I am SHOOK. Arrest them immediately, for disrupting my expectations and committing the crime of public maturity.

“Maybe you were right. I am pissed at you because you can float through the kitchen, making pancakes and cracking jokes, while I’m using every goddamn ounce of willpower not to touch you. That’s why I don’t want to be around you. You’re killing me, and you don’t even know it.”

STOP IT RIGHT NOW!! My heart is MELTING into a smoothie of its own!!!
The way he couldn’t even manage pancakes but still wanted to give her something, anything, just to make her smile? Ughhh, that’s pure, unfiltered devotion right there. Like HELLO?? This man said: “I might burn every pancake on earth, but I will blend your happiness DAILY.”
And not just once… every freaking day. That’s not just a cute gesture, that’s consistency, that’s care, that’s LOVE in action. The fact that she makes him pancakes every Sunday and he repays her with a smoothie every day?? That’s the type of give-and-take that makes me BELIEVE in soft, enduring love. 😭👏
This man is out here trying, growing, loving loudly, and I am absolutely weak for it. Someone hold me. Or better… someone make me a smoothie every day.

OH. MY. GOD. STOPPP! THIS MAN IS OUT HERE REWRITING ROMANCE STANDARDS IN REAL TIME!
Like… do you realize how INSANE that is?? He didn’t just want to make smoothies, HE WAS READY TO CHANGE HIS WHOLE CAREER PATH, the same career he worked so hard for, JUST to be closer to her. Because being on the same team wasn’t just convenient, it was necessary for his heart. 💔➡️💖
HE HAD A BIG PLACE IN HIS CURRENT CLUB. A SOLID SPOT. A FUTURE. But nope, none of it mattered as much as she did. He was like:
“New jersey, new field, new everything, as long as you’re there, I’m good.”
THE WAY I’M SCREAMING ????? 😭💥 This is peak romance energy. He’s not just falling in love. He is choosing her every single day, sacrificing comfort, routine, and pride, just to stay in her orbit.
That’s not love.
That’s devotion.
That’s “I found my person and nothing else matters” type energy.
That is GIVE ME A MAN LIKE THIS OR GIVE ME DEATH!

⋆.˚🏒⋆ AHHH FINALLY I AM READING THIS AFTER WAITING FOR SO LONGG! We’ve got Vincent DuBois, the arrogant, gorgeous football captain who has the world at his feet, but suddenly he’s stuck living under the same roof as Brooklyn, his coach’s daughter (and his best friend’s sister, AAH WHAT!). She’s smart, determined, and absolutely off-limits, but tell me why that just makes the tension ten times hotter?? Between late-night walls thin enough to hear every breath, a bet that pushes them closer than either of them bargained for, and the constant battle between career vs. desire, I know I’m about to get drama, banter, and sparks that could set the flat on fire.

The Vibes?
Enemies in the kitchen, tension in the hallways, temptation in every glance, this book is pure forbidden-fire energy.

so HE’S HER COACH’S DAUGHTER’S FLATMATE BESTIE I’M SCREAMING…yeah, don’t tell me again; I am already SAT. 🪑

Also hear me out…..I feel like the couple after them might be Carina and Noah? Especially since we learn that Carina needs a 2nd job and Noah being a single American father to an 11 year old daughter…..maybe he could hire her as his nanny? Just a thought but who knows, we shall see!

I was literally about to turn the lights off and sleep like a responsible adult, but my brain said, “No, babe. Write that review now,” and who am I to argue with a bookish impulse?

Ana didn’t let me down. I was nervous, but she pulled through and gave me exactly what I needed.

Vincent and Brooklyn felt like a breath of fresh air. They were nothing like Ana’s usual characters, they were soft, sweet, and emotionally available. It was such a cozy change of pace and I adored every second. Vincent, my cinnamon roll of a man, had me melting. He was respectful, tender, and still knew how to throw in some witty banter. I felt like I was being hugged every time he opened his mouth.

Brooklyn, my queen, was so real and relatable it hurt. She wasn’t just some polished character; she was messy, struggling, surviving, and I loved her for it. Watching her grow and find peace was such a fulfilling experience.

They were so similar in the best way. Their chemistry wasn’t about tension or fire, it was about understanding and deep emotional connection. When they spoke to each other, it felt like they were speaking with each other, not just at each other. They didn’t just give pep talks, they knew exactly what the other needed to hear, because they had felt those exact things themselves. That level of connection? Swoon.

Their love was soft and comfortable in the most beautiful way. No drama. No unnecessary blow-ups. Just clear communication, respect, and a whole lot of sweetness. And yes, I know some people find that boring — but to me, it felt like finally exhaling after holding my breath.

The rain scene? Pure serotonin. The bets? IYKYK. And no third-act breakup? Ana, you’re doing amazing, sweetie.

The plot was also a win. I was wrong at every turn, and honestly, that’s my favorite kind of reading experience. I love being outsmarted. (It might as well have screamed in my face, I still wouldn’t have seen it 😭)

Now listen. My one complaint? If you tell me the love interest is French, I expect something. Give me a crumb. A tiny French endearment. Anything. I would have taken even the most cliché “mon amour” or ‘’ma chérie’’ just for the ✨vibes✨. But instead… buttercup? (The explanation didn’t make it up to me) I felt personally robbed of my chance to cringe at the French and love it anyway.

Even with that minor heartbreak, this book was such a win. It felt like a warm blanket and a cup of something sweet. The audiobook was phenomenal, that duet narration was chef’s kiss.

Thanks for reading xx.

It was an enjoyable and quick read. The tension and witty banter between the characters kept things engaging throughout. I also recommend the audiobook for an even better experience.

‎❝ i'd lose every single fucking bet in the world if it meant i could be with you.
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ the defender by ana huang is a sports romance that actually seems to remember where the goal is. reading it felt like watching a football match where the keeper makes clutch saves and, miracle of miracles, the team scores more than once. sure, a few passes go sideways and the plot sometimes trips over its own shoelaces, but i wasn't cold and dead inside this time. more like warm, mildly feral, and clapping like a seal. not a blowout, but a solid win that had me cheering, cackling, and occasionally kicking my feet like i, too, was violating blackcastle's anti-fraternisation policy.

₊˚꒰ 𖧷 ꒱ ⊹ i. plot and romance. ₊˚⊹ ꒱ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ let's welcome blackcastle's granite-jawed captain vincent dubois, who discovers that someone out there loves him in a "break into your home and leave a cursed pinterest craft" kind of way. solution? emergency flatshare with brooklyn armstrong, the team's razor-sharp nutritionist who is (tiny detail) the coach’s daughter. nothing to see here except hr's blood pressure spiking.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ do i fully understand why they like each other beyond "wow, sharp cheekbones" and "hello, gorgeous forearms"? not really, and yet, somehow, the romance is adorable anyway. the lack of a third-act breakup felt like the heavens truly looked upon my goodreads updates and said, "bestie, please go take a nap." what do you mean the characters COMMUNICATE LIKE ACTUAL ADULTS? in an ana huang book? arrest them for public maturity.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ the standout is brooklyn's career arc. being the coach's daughter means every meeting starts with "so you're here because... daddy?" she pulverizes that nepotism energy with girl-boss competence. meanwhile, sweet, soft-spoken vincent is such a supportive boyfriend. we absolutely, completely stan.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ they’re absolutely each other’s home. vincent is like a human panic room with legs, while brooklyn hangs up fairy lights in his ribcage, and suddenly the place has warm lighting and a functioning thermostat. they comfort and protect each other like it’s a full-time job, tender, ridiculous, adorable, and i’m just over here like, where is my defender and why hasn’t he installed dimmers in my soul yet?

₊˚꒰ 𖧷 ꒱ ⊹ ii. pacing report. ₊˚⊹ ꒱ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ there were stretches where the pacing did a little sideways pass instead of going for goal. not a full snooze, more like a gentle lullaby, but i did kinda start begging for something so my soul can feel things again.

₊˚꒰ 𖧷 ꒱ ⊹ iii. conclusion. ₊˚⊹ ꒱
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ not a blowout, but a clean win: cozy flatshare, grown-up communication (in this economy?!), a heroine with a spine and a résumé, and a captain who defends more than a goal. i laughed, i cackled, and my ankles committed minor crimes in the air. now, i want my penguin-obsessed, vietnamese queen, carina, and blackcastle's goalkeeper daddy, noah wilson in my gremlin hands.

‎ ‎ i’m going to start this review on a positive and say that i liked this book more than the first. brooklyn and vincent had more chemistry than scarlett and asher and the premise was slightly more interesting. the communication was top tier, and there weren’t any unnecessary conflicts for the sake of plot which was refreshing.

‎ ‎ on the subject of plot, however, i don’t believe there was enough of it to warrant 450 pages. this may just be an ana huang thing, though, as i said the same thing in my review of the striker. still, it was pretty easy to consume and didn’t take up way too much of my time, so i’m not too mad.

I was looking forward to this book since KoS because Vincent seemed so interesting. I was 100% correct because his character had surprising depth and I immensely enjoyed living in his pov for a day or two. I'm also looking to gain new perspectives and Vincent was a great addition to my mental collection. Vincent works through his complicated feelings about being abandoned by his mother and then later adopted. It was really heartwarming to see the way his romantic relationship and friendship with Brooklyn helped him let go of these negative feelings.

As always, AH writes the best millionaire men and Vincent was no exception. I like to read about this lavish lifestyle because I know that will probably never experience it myself.

✮ 2.75 - 3 stars (i’m still conflicted)
➷ slight spoilers

✧˚ ana huang and i have a very complicated relationship... as in, i the reader, has either completely loved (king of greed) or absolutely HATED - (if we ever meet again) - her books.
and since her last two releases have not been spectacular in the slightest, i was nervous to pick this one up. i wasn’t actually going to read this one, since the characters didn’t interest me particularly, but when i saw that everyone was saying that it was completely unlike any book she has ever written (in a good way) i jumped at the occasion to & was completely sold when people said it was mature, respectful, with no third act breakup & the main characters were actually emotionally intelligent like yes, please!

➴ this book picks up a few months after the end of the striker. in the first instalment of the series, we got introduced to both brooklyn and vincent.
like the rest of ana huang’s books this is an interconnected standalone that is set in the same world as all of her other books. previous characters and places are mentioned throughout the defender, and the main characters from the striker are very present in this book.

✧ jumping straight into the action, the pacing at the beginning was perfect. we had the ideal amount of showing and telling; the characters and plot were executed well enough and i wasn’t bored.
but then. the 25 percent mark hit. i don’t really know what happened to be honest. at one moment i was quite frankly enjoying everything; and the next, i was forcing myself to finish one chapter whilst everything was dragging out. we didn’t have any mention of the romance, and when we did it was yawningly boring (as in, the “just friends” thing was getting old and the banter was less interesting than watching paint dry.) we were instead focused on the relationship between brooklyn and her asshole father & mother who deserve to never be in contact with her again! one thing about huang is that she will make you HATE the protagonists parents. like bash their head against the wall ‘bitch are you fucking serious’ hate.
i don’t understand why authors feel the need to write about horrid parent child relationships. at the beginning it was great that huang brought some sort of representation to poor family relationships- but IN EVERY SINGLE BOOK?? instead of representation, it felt like a plot point….and that is the thing i hate the most in books: when an author turns an actual real life situation that is actually fucking traumatic (😭) and dismisses it as just a part of the plot. now don’t piss me off. imagine how brooklyn felt when:

a) her mother did not give a singular FAWWWKKK about her during the whole entire 350 pages (and basically during her whole life) like lord have mercy that woman is so selfish. imagine finding out that your mom basically said she did not care about you and every time you would try to make an effort she would be distracted by her 7th husband and your 5th and 6th half sibling. i would’ve actually lost it. and when brooklyn did lash out i was cheering like a proud mom.

b) her father was not worse for say but he was definitely not a stellar father either.
he did not care about her, like actually seriously did not care about her. brooklyn was always the one suggesting to get dinner with him and he would either refuse or make it eye-rollingly awkward. the only time he suddenly concerned himself about her life was when he found out that vincent and her were dating. i genuinely lost my marbles at the way he acted about the whole situation- like is he aware that they are two consenting adults who are legally allowed to date each other without the consent of a parent. childish!!!! although i did like the way he acted at the end!

➴ the vincent stalker plot point had so much potential to be groundbreaking. yet it wasn’t. i laughed my fucking ass of at the clicheness of the whole thing. and was underwhelmed by the “plot twist” (i guessed who the stalker was the second they were introduced- i think i’ve read too many thrillers LMAO)
vincents anxiousness about the whole situation was discussed slightly at the beginning then forgotten, then brought up again, then forgotten. it was never consistent. if it was executed well i could’ve enjoyed it even with the corny plot twist that i guessed from a mile away. stalking is one of the most scarring things that can happen to someone- and it felt kind of brushed over. i wish we had explored it more- as in maybe the characters could’ve gotten involved with the investigation, vincent could’ve opened up more about his experience etc etc.

✧ what i love most about anas storyline is her found family. it is executed in a way where its not overly shoved down your throat (the only plot is the ff) & that you actually care and root for the characters when they are not even present in the scene.
in the striker, i did not care about the main couple but instead focused on the side ones (brooklyn + vincent) & (carina + noah)
on the contrary, in this book, i cared for both the side and the main couple and never got bored of either of them. if you HATED the striker or thought it was boring…i did too…but i genuinely thoroughly enjoyed this book! this was definitely the most green flag relationship out of all the books she have ever written! i have no complaints about the romance as i thought they were emotionally mature and actually thought with their brains instead of their dicks….

Brooklyn Armstrong
like her name suggests, she is incredibly strong. gone through intense child neglect can bruise people for the rest of their life but alas, she kept persisting. she wasn’t the most well thought out female main character out there but she was definitely not boring either. her personality was great and i thought she was a great partner and friend. other then that, she was nothing remarkable.

Vincent Dubois
now THIS is how you write an emotionally available man!!! *insert green flag running man*
he is definitely one of my top mmcs written by ana! he was sunshine personified but he was also not shallow minded enough to think that he could manipulate people with his personality. he was also a great friend to everyone and didn’t put his career over personal relationships. my shayla!

overall, this was a fun lighthearted book that i would recommend in between heavy books!! it was definitely not perfect but it was not horrible either. i’m definitely reading book 3 because it’s got my absolute fav tropes in it!!

⟢ start date: 14 nov
end date: 21 nov

i enjoyed this book much more than i expected even though i did take…a month to complete it. im so glad the vincent and brooklyn actually get mad at unfair circumstances in this book, since in my opinion, characters don’t get mad enough! we need more fights and confrontation (to unfair situations, not vincent and brooklyn to each other). i actually related much more to both vincent’s and brooklyn’s sentiments more than i inspected too. still not my fave ana huang book, but very enjoyable. cannot wait for carina’s & noah’s story.

ੈ♡˳ summary:
vincent du bois is the captain of one of england’s top football clubs, known for being ruthless on and off the field. brooklyn armstrong, a sports nutritionist and the coach’s daughter, has sworn off athletes for good. when vincent moves in with brooklyn temporarily, their worlds collide and sparks fly. what starts as tension quickly turns into passion, and the two must decide if love is worth breaking all their rules.

ੈ♡˳ thoughts:
ana huang did it again. i didn’t think i would love her sports romance era after the striker, but the defender completely proved me wrong. brooklyn and vincent’s story was perfection. they balanced each other so well, and their chemistry was honestly insane. i loved how both of them were strong on their own but still found strength in each other. vincent’s quiet intensity and brooklyn’s determination made for such a beautiful dynamic.

one thing i adored was that their relationship actually grew throughout the story. it wasn’t rushed or shallow, it felt earned. both of them had baggage and backstories that were meaningful, and the way they overcame those obstacles together felt real. i also loved that there was a little side plot going on. it added so much depth to the story without making it feel too long or drawn out.

ana’s writing just keeps getting better, and she managed to pack all the emotion and tension into a story that didn’t feel unnecessarily long. the pacing was great, the steamy scenes were top tier, and the emotional connection between brooklyn and vincent felt so genuine. this was everything i wanted and more from a sports romance. i’m so excited to see what she does next with noah and carina’s story.

The sports element was severely lacking (a few mentions of the team winning/losing), and the banter was disappointingly average. No highlight worthy annotations. The spark is gone in Ana Huang’s recent books for me, and the writing feels recycled.

With that said, I’m still looking forward to reading King of Gluttony (but setting my expectations low though 🫢)
