Teaching Quinn

Rate this book
I crossed a line I never should have crossed… and now I don’t want to go back.

When my best friend’s grown son texts me looking for help, I figure it’s because his dad is out of town.

Turns out he has something specific in mind. Something I never could’ve seen coming.

Quinn wants me to teach him about sex, every raw and sensual thing. He is desperate to improve, and trusts me to show him the way. I mean, I have the experience, but I need to say no. I try to.

But when his urges lead him into the arms of a dangerous man, I have only one protect my friend’s son.

The rule is Seth can’t know. But the more Quinn strips bare for me, the more I’m fascinated by his smart wit, unique insight, and tender honesty. It pulls me in, and melts the carefully constructed walls around my heart faster than I ever thought possible.

This is not the guy Seth told me about, and worse, Seth doesn’t even see it. Is there a way to open his eyes without revealing how much I’ve noticed Quinn too? Or will teaching Quinn be my most devastating lesson of all?

I am an Idaho native who grew up dreaming about traveling the world and writing stories. As a child, I would often spend my spare time curled up with my favorite blanket and a notebook, writing another fairy tale. I never would have guessed those fairy tales would one day grow into gay romances, but that is where my heart led me and I am so glad it did. I write about love because I believe it can happen to anyone, with anyone. I also believe dreams never expire, redemption is possible, and true forgiveness can heal us in ways we never expect. I know firsthand how messy life can get, but as any artist will tell you, a little mess is needed to create something beautiful. That’s why I write, to help others see that anything can be beautiful. You can often find me with a mug of coffee in one hand and a dog toy in the other. There is never a day that goes by without my sweet boy insisting on a game - or twenty - of fetch.

A fun and sexy read. Ian being so caring and sweet with Quinn, the ‘sex lessons’ quickly turning into more, and looots of delicious smut. I always fall for these reads.

“Touch yourself,” he says softly. My eyes widen. “W-what?” “You heard me.”

Quinn’s inexperience and Ian’s gentleness, the pure passion between them, the soft touches, sweet first times, cute dates — ok, you get the idea. I just really enjoyed watching these two falling in love.

Please let time slow down a little. I don’t want this to end.

And even though the third-act drama was cliché and no lie gave me second-hand cringe and hives and a case of the kindle screams and I scared my poor cat but HA I KNEW IT WAS GONNA HAPPEN ‘CAUSE IT ALWAYS FUCKIN—Ahem, I still had so much fun with this one and GOD the next installment is about Quinn’s dad and I can’t wait.

I went to Ian asking for sex lessons, yet ended up learning the greatest lesson of all: how to love.

Yeah, that last quote is so fucking cheesy but I just had to add it.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

Book one in a new series. This book has a large age gap of 19 years between the MC’s.

Ian is best friends with Seth.
Quinn is Seth’s son. And he desperately wants sex lessons from Ian.

They both put up compelling arguments as to why and why not Ian should be a gay sexual Jedi but ultimately Ian wins… this time.

Quinn may be inexperienced but he’s horny as hell. This horniness leads to some bad decisions. Seriously there are the usual horny 18 year olds but Quinn takes it to another level.

Ian worries about the age difference, that Quinn is his best friends son and that he may be taking advantage of Quinn.

“I can help him. Be what he wants: someone to guide him through the different levels of pleasure. Safely. There is only one right answer, and it just might cost me everything. Please forgive me, Seth. I’m only doing this to keep Quinn safe.”

Yes Ian, you’re a damn martyr. You don’t find him sexually attractive at all and this just for his protection. Insert eye-roll.

“Holy hell, what did I get myself into? I have never in my life had someone so willing to try things, or so excited. Quinn is eager to experience everything two people can do together, and I’m eager to give it to him… way more than I should be.”

The sex is hot , intense, fire. They have a long list of things to try and do. The line is drawn at having sleepovers.

“Quinn and I are hurting so many people doing what we’re doing, yet I can’t seem to stop. I don’t want to. I’m enjoying it too damn much. Plus, if I did, Quinn would run right back out there trying to get laid, and I don’t want that for him. I don’t even want him sleeping with anyone else, which is ridiculous. This isn’t exclusive.”

You know what, Ian is actually a very good teacher in the sexual arts.

Ian and Quinn become closer, open up to each other.

I haven’t really met Seth yet but far out, all the betrayal going on. And not just Ian and Quinn’s secret relationship. I hope he gets a book and a nice romance.

Quinn and Ian start to care about each other, it’s not just sex.

Seth comes home and finds them together and loses his mind. He is FURIOUS. He’s hurt and confused. There will be a reconciliation in book 2.

“The tips of Quinn’s ears turn pink as he smiles. “I love you.” I close my eyes and press my forehead to his, breathing in his words. “I love you too.”

Personally I didn’t love this book or hate it. I found it average. I did like Ian as a sex teacher, he was really good at it - kind and patient. There was so much guilt and shame emitting from them being together I’m surprised they went there and took that risk.I did feel for Quinn being young, inexperienced, horny and going through those shitty experiences before Ian. But why, WHY after immediately being assaulted in a nightclub , where Ian rescued him, does Quinn start to get horny being in Ian’s arms?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I am also confused why it’s Ian’s exes fault and how did he screw with Ian’s career?

Quinn’s bestie seemed a pointless character to add to the plot. She brought nothing to the table.

Running into Seth’s ex also had me asking why? It really showed the whole black kettle thing there. Ian is judging their betrayal to Seth but hey buddy look in a mirror. You’re all shitty to Seth.

And Seth does get his own book next.

2.5 bumped to 3

So I was actually on track for this to be a 4 possibly 5 star even though it’s def not the best book I’ve ever read. The mood I was in at the time it was hitting all the marks. Then we found out how much Seth has been screwed over in his divorce just for his son and friend to screw him over some more. Ruined the mood for me and nearly ruined the book. I will continue with at least the next one though bc I’m heavily invested in Seth getting his HEA.

I received an ARC copy from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

Alot of this book annoyed me. I know Quinn is only 23, but the way he acted just rubbed me the wrong way. Very immature. He asks his dad’s best friend to teach him about sex, since he always had a crush on him? Found him attractive?

The guy clearly knows how to stretch himself since he’s using a big ass purple dildo on himself all the time apparently. They sneak off together to have sex at Quinn’s appartment and no one can know. He keeps whining and being insecure that he’s bad about sex and doesn’t know what he’s doing.

This book is a no for me, sorry! 🩷

Thank you GRR for the arc!

This book went by so quickly, and I was hooked from the start.
The story follows Quinn and Ian, who have an age gap due to Ian being Quinn's father's best friend.

Quinn is frustrated. He's been unable to find a patient partner to experiment with, which leads him to ask the only other gay guy he knows: his dad's friend.

I love a good forbidden romance, and this book delivered! Plus I'm such a straight up sucker for "teaching" tropes in books.
It delivered with both the tropes, especially the teaching. Ian encourages Quinn to make a list of like 100 things to try. Yes, that many!

The arrangement starts off as professional, no feelings. Set rules and set times for meeting, but the more they meet up and connect, feelings creep in.
The romance in the story is sweet, with plenty of steam and spice!
I only felt bad for Quinn's dad, he was not aware of their sneaking around behind his back.
Buuut
At least with the sequel, it features his dad 👀 so I'm eager to read that!

DNF 46% in and they just.. fuck? Or talk about fucking? There's no actual plot, and the characters aren't driven by any other purpose, that just it. No depth nor compelling dialogues.

This story was awesome to read. It is hot, hot hot but when the love is found it's beautiful to watch unfold.

This story starts out with Quinn, a young gay man who has found unfulfilling sexual experiences as his partners have not allowed him to explore himself, his wants and his needs. So he thinks up a plan to have a teacher, a safe person and space to learn about sex and in his mind make him a better partner. The only person he can think of with the experience and that he could trust is his father's best friend, Ian. Now this is not the typical father's best friend scenario. Ian and Quinn's father, Seth became friend after his first divorce and have been friends since Quinn was about 15. Ian never saw Quinn as anything but his father's friend and Quinn noticed his attraction to Ian but there was no pining involved. Ian initially rejects the advance and offer but his intuition about Quinn leads to encounter that is hard for either of them to forget. Ian says yes but they set ground rules.

The Tuesday and Friday arrangements allow for Quinn to discover what he likes and what he doesn't. It allows him to be himself, to take moments slow and ask questions it's not an all out hump fest. But as the lessons ramp up in intensity, the feelings that should have been kept at bay begin to creep in. Both men are determined to keep things as they are because Seth means the world to them but their biweekly encounters come with conversation and climax. Both men have a level of inferiority or feeling less than to accomplish their goals. Ian encourages Quinn through his last semester of college and a major next career step and Quinn instills a desire for Ian to put his hopes and dreams first.

All is well but just has both men border on saying I love you, their bubble is popped in the most intense and unfortunate way. This moment is devasting to both men and will test their newfound friendship but more importantly their newfound love for one another and desire to be together. They will get their happy ending but it does come at a slight cost.

This story truly blew me away, I 1000% wanted to read it because the blurb promised some hot and streamy moments which it fully delivered. I however fell in love with Quinn and Ian and how much they needed each other despite their age gap and different life experiences. Their love grew organically and yes their physical relationship enhanced this but both of these men had been burned and hurt and found true comfort in one another. Kim absolutely found the perfect balance of borderline strangers to no strong lovers to two men deeply in love looking to find their place in the world.

I am so excited to know that we have no seen the last of these guys namely Seth. He's off on a new adventure with well deserved promotion and location in hand. He's been burned twice and while we're don't know too much about Quinn's mom, we were "introduced" to his second wife. This author is new to me and I cannot wait to explore their backlog of books!! But I am most excited to continue this series.

"Teaching Quinn" was an okay read for me, but I found myself struggling to fully connect with the characters and their journey. The story revolves around Quinn, who is determined to get Ian to help him despite the complications of their dynamic—Quinn being Ian’s best friend’s son. I did enjoy the off-limits aspect of their relationship; it added a layer of tension and intrigue that kept me turning the pages.

However, I found Quinn a bit frustrating as a character. His persistence was admirable at times, but his behaviour occasionally came across as immature. On the other hand, Ian’s constant guilt over their relationship felt repetitive, and while I understand why it was a significant theme, it seemed to overshadow their chemistry at times.

The drama in the book comes from external characters—people in their lives stirring things up and, of course, Seth’s reaction when he discovers what’s happening. While these moments added some spice to the story, they also felt a bit rushed or underdeveloped in places. For instance, the subplot with Quinn’s ex and best friend didn’t seem to tie into the main story as seamlessly as I’d hoped, leaving loose ends and raising more questions than answers.

As for the ending, it felt more like a Happy-For-Now (HFN) than a solid Happy Ever After (HEA). While this works for some stories, it left me wanting a bit more resolution and reassurance about their future together.

Despite these flaws, there were aspects I enjoyed. The age-gap dynamic and the best-friend’s-son trope brought a fun tension to the story, and there were definitely cute and heartwarming moments sprinkled throughout. For readers who enjoy slow-burn romances with a bit of angst and drama, this could be a solid pick.

Overall, while it didn’t fully hit the mark for me, "Teaching Quinn" is a sweet and enjoyable read for fans of age-gap romances looking for a story with emotional stakes and complex relationships.

This book caught my interest from the first page and it didn't let go. I love a good age gap romance, and the fact that it's Best Friend's son (or Dad's Best Friend) trope, I was all in on this book.

When Quinn's dad - Seth - is out of town for work, Quinn approaches Ian and asks him to teach him about sex, Ian's first and instant response is no. He's not going to sneak around behind Seth's back, not going to betray his best friend, just because the kid seems desperate to learn. But then Quinn gets himself in a bad situation that Ian just happens to witness and, well, you can guess what happens.

Of course Ian isn't going to let Quinn get hurt, so he agrees to tutor him. It would be easy to say that's the gist of the book, but there's more depth to it than that. Both men grapple with their guilt throughout the pages, but neither of them can walk away. What is supposed to be a casual, no-feelings arrangement becomes more, and their evolving relationship feels natural and respectful. What started as something purely physical quickly becomes a relationship grounded in genuine care and understanding.

Perhaps that's what made this book so appealing though. Yes, there's a 19 year age gap between the two MCs (though that seems like less of a problem than the fact that they're sneaking around behind Seth's back). But this isn't just a romance that's all spice and no substance. It's a story about what it means to truly trust someone, to be safe enough to be yourself, and to protect and love someone when the stakes seem impossibly high.

If you're looking for a romance that pushes some boundaries while still delivering a heartfelt and satisfying love story, this is a must-read.

I adored this book and the characters of Ian and Quinn. Quinn couldn’t have found anyone better to help him explore with his s*x lessons, and Ian couldn’t have been anymore thoughtful, caring, and honest as he created a safe place for Quinn to gain confidence and learn to trust. In addition, Quinn allowed Ian to rediscover parts of himself that he thought were gone, and to also trust enough to dare to care again. Their lists, the scheduled sessions, the open questions and answers shared, the slowly developing progression of experiences and practices for Quinn to gain the confidence in himself and his view of himself as an attractive and interesting person, did so much to build him up and let him see the potential he had to learn to care and love and feel safe and protected. Both were aware of the lines being crossed when it came to Seth, but the growing connection and feelings were too much to resist. When the day of reckoning came, it was as brutal as expected, but more positive came from the aftermath than they ever expected. I would hope to see more of the continuing relationship of Quinn and Ian as a side story in the next book, Seth’s story, as I am definitely invested in their future together.

This is a new author to me, but one which I will definitely follow. The growing relationship and interactions between Ian and Quinn were beautiful to read, and if other works are as well done, this could become one of my favorite authors. A very emotional and satisfying read for me, well worth more than 5 stars in my opinion.

Teaching Quinn explores a taboo relationship between Quinn, a young man seeking guidance in navigating his sexual awakening, and Ian, his father’s best friend. When Quinn turns to Ian for help, Ian initially declines, wary of the obvious complications. However, Ian's protective instincts kick in when he discovers Quinn's intention to seek unsafe alternatives, leading him to reluctantly take on the role of Quinn's mentor. The character development is well-executed, particularly as the bond between Quinn and Ian evolves from physical exploration to genuine love. The dynamic feels authentic and is one of the book’s greatest strengths.

However, the explicit detail in the “lessons” detracts from the narrative. The repetitive and overly graphic descriptions felt gratuitous, interrupting the story’s flow. For readers who prefer more subtlety in erotic scenes, this aspect may become a point of frustration, though it is easy enough to skim past these moments and return to the main plot.

The ending, while satisfying, comes across as slightly rushed, leaving the resolution feeling less developed compared to the rest of the book. Still, the story offers an engaging and heartfelt conclusion.

Teaching Quinn is my first book by Kim Breyon. Quinn is looking for someone to teach him about intimacy and s** because he feels like he is bad at it. He looks to his Dad’s best friend, Ian, because Ian is experienced and the only one that Quinn can think of to teach him the ropes. Ian is at first resistant because of his friendship with Seth, Quinn’s dad. The beginning was a little slow for me, but as soon as these two started spending time together and checking things off their list, I really enjoyed it. I loved watching these two realize that they had a lot in common and they fit each other well. I hated how Seth treated both of them when he found out, but his treatment of Ian was particularly horrible. I hope in the next book that Ian gets the apology that he deserves because he does not in this one. I am looking forward to reading Seth’s book (even if he was a terrible person to Ian in this one) because he is just so lost and sad. I am looking forward to book 2!

Although I understood why Ian was uncomfortable with his best friend and roommate's son approaching him for tutelage around his love life, it was clear that after some not so good fits and starts Quinn knew he would be safe with Ian. Did it complicate things in both of their relationships with Seth, Quinn's dad? Yes it did. And clearly as things did not resolve before the end of the book, rebuilding their connection with him would take time. But here are two men, both of age, attracted to one another. And although Quinn came to Ian for help with the mechanics, together they come to care about one another and once they are able to admit it, they fall in love. Quinn was not the only one who learned in this story. And they both grew, not only personally but also in their goals professionally as well. They had each other's back as they settled into a relationship neither realized he wanted. I am looking forward to Seth's story.

I really enjoyed this book. A best friend's son/father's best friend age gap romance. I loved both Ian and Quinn. I liked the premise of the story, of course. I found it even more fascinating that Seth (Quinn's father) and Ian are roommates since Seth moved in with him after his divorce. Now that he's away at work for three months, Quinn musters up the courage to ask Ian for some 'special' lessons. His parents don't even know he's gay yet.

'Walking past him, I go to the kitchen and open the cabinet behind the coffee maker. I need alcohol. Now!... Did I hit my head at work or something?
“Did you hear me?” Quinn asks from behind me. “I want you to teach me what you know.”

A fun read and I was completely hooked. What boundaries would be crossed? What will happen when Seth gets home and finds out?

This is the first book I've read by this author and I would definitely read more. 5 stars

Quinn and Ian ❤️

3 Stars ⭐️

There were several things that I loved in this read but others not so much. I thought this started off a bit quirky but as these guys spend time together with some seriously spicy exploration It got better. There were some really sweet moment as well. Toward the end of the story is where I nearly lost it. Seth and his attitude with the whole relationship reveal left me shaking my head. He read more like a toddler than a 40 something year old father. I get the situation was shocking but the dude needs a serious look into himself, which is why I will continue with this series to see if he can be redeemed because he never gave his son and his best friend a chance to prove their love, that didn't sit well with me. I'm going to say go ahead and pick it up, it did end up being a nice read.

This definitely wasn't a HEA all-around and it left it pretty open-ended between Seth and his son and best friend. Part of me doesn't like that because I want everything to be wrapped up with a nice little bow, but another part of me can acknowledge that finding out that your best friend and son are in a relationship might take a little time to get used to and you need some time to process that, so it's pretty realistic. I do like that we got the first steps towards reconnection between Quinn and his father, at least. Overall, I enjoyed this and I like how tender they are with each other, even from the start.

A man and his best friend’s son. A man and his father’s best friend. It’s wrong, right? Actually, it couldn’t be more perfect. A taboo relationship and an unusual beginning become more than anyone could hope for.

The chemistry between the MCs is instantaneous. The sex is fire. The relationship a beautiful slow-burn. The crisis moment was telegraphed from the very beginning, but was more explosive than I imagined with a sweeter resolution. Thanks to the author for not rushing through the denouement.

This is a new-to-me author I found through Gay Romance Reviews whose work I will be exploring further.

The cover alone makes this a must read but the plot and the main characters are the true stars. I was not familiar with this author but loved how she took what could have been an iky taboo topic and made it pure love and beautiful. In this wonderful book Quinn feels he needs help in learning about sex and he thinks the perfect person to help him is his dad's best friend Ian. While Ian is unsure the cannot help but help with Quinn makes some questionable choices. I loved how what starts as chemistry and spice develops into love and a great relationship. Spicy and romantic at the same time. I cannot wait for book two. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

The book started off with a bang, and while you don't know anything about either Quinn and Ian, other than Quinn's father was Ian's best friend and roommate, but the younger man asks Ian to teach him all about the intimacy between two men. Ian, while intrigued, turns him down when he thinks about the complications that would arise. But that all changes when Ian saves Quinn from an unsavory experience at a bar. The book didn't resonate with me and I found Quinn both unbelievable as a character and a bit annoying. The relationship development was also based on sex, but you could see the connection between the two men. This book wasn't really for me.

The set up for this one is just not working for me at all, It didn't make sense why Quinn chose Ian to ask teach him. Also his reasons - his just obsessed with Sex, wants to fuck constantly... So I didn't get why he cared so much about the whole learning or anything.

Oh and he goes from being assaulted to wanting Ian again within literally seconds. There's just nothing grabbing me here, neither of them are particularly likeable or interesting - I'm simply not invested enough to continue.

Mustard yellow Carhart pants, devil's workhorse, yellow & pink flowers, red & purple speedos, all-male burlesque, Subway sandwich

The nineteen years age difference seems like a huge impediment, but it's minor compared to the best friend-son thing. It's all improbable, but, hey, this is fiction.

Both Ian and Quinn are attentive and caring men, who are in denial about them being boyfriends, not just FwB. Oh boy, do they cross a lot of lines! In any case, things are very steamy between them!

I enjoyed reading this and recommend it.

I thought this was an ok book. I had a bit of a struggle trying to connection with Quinn and Ian. Quinn wants Ian to help and Ian is opposed as Quinn is his best friend’s son (I did enjoy the off-limits aspect). I found Quinn annoying and the guilt that kept plaguing Ian was a bit too much. There is drama when people in their lives make appears as well as when Seth finds out but there seem to get, to me, a HFN ending.

Quinn makes it impossible for Ian to resist his offer. Once he puts himself in danger Ian worries more about Quinn being in danger than the fact that he's his best friend. Seth's son. Placing limits and timelines doesn't work, they are meant for each other. It's a really good story and It looks like Seth might have to eat humble pie because he has a story next it seems. I really enjoyed how well this story was written and how much depth the characters had. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Quinn and Ian are both men at a crossroads in their lives. Quinn is about to start grad school, trying to figure out the people who deserve to be in his life, and learning what his sexuality means to him. Ian has a history of meaningless hookups that have ruined his career. After a few disastrous hookups, Quinn goes to Ian hoping to learn more about sex. The main issue is that Ian is Quinn's father's best friend. Quinn is sure that Ian can safely initiate him into the world of gay sex. But Ian doesn't expect that Quinn will remind him of the things he wanted in his past.

I didn’t connect with either of the MCs. Quinn was likable, but a bit annoying; I felt almost nothing for Ian. I thought—beyond an actual, physical altercation—that Seth’s reaction to Ian was a realistic one for a caring father (oh, what it must feel like to have one of those *cries in daddy issues*) to have, though he was more of a jerk to his son than Quinn deserved.

(I received an ARC of this book from GRR, and this is my honest review.)

Ian is propositioned by his best friend's son, Quinn to help him learn how to be with a guy. Quinn has no confidence in himself or his skills plus he is genuinely attracted to Ian, an older man. Ian doesn't want his friend to know but can't resist Quinn. So many steamy scenes as Quinn learns and Ian enjoys teaching him. You know they are going to have to be together! I received a copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my voluntary opinion.

Quinn and Ian know of each other and have met a few time because Quinn's dad, Seth, is Ian's best friend. It starts out messy, as they usually do, but Quinn quickly falls for Ian. Unfortunately, because of a messed up sense of loyalty to Seth, Ian continues to break Quinns heart. Then, when Seth finds out, he basically cuts them off. Who does that to there own son? Seth's book is next and I'm reluctant to start it yet because I'm so irritated with him.

Teaching Quinn

I really enjoyed reading Teaching Quinn! Quinn is what we call a late bloomer. And Ian has been a fast player. Quinn is a bummer at sex, or thinks he is. Asking Ian for sex help is awkward but soon both are learning from each other. The big problem is Ian is Quinn's dads best friend.

Great storyline!

This just didn't work for me. There is no plot or even an attempt. After Quinn ends up is a dangerous situation, Ian agrees to Quinn's request that he teach him about sex. Ian has Quinn make a list of what he wants to learn. They meet up twice a week at Quinn's apartment to check things off the list. That's the book in a nutshell. All sex, no plot.
